Ok everyone, here we go again! This time we're going to decide what the DT's best Sci-Fi movie is. We'll closely follow the template used in the Horror tournament, only this one will be structured around multiple votes (total votes per thread still TBD).

For those of you that were following the announcement thread this week (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?18501-Planning-to-participate-in-the-soon-upcoming-SCI-FI-tournament-Get-in-here!-(POLL)), we had some interesting discussion on the kind of things that constitute what a sci-fi film is. It is by no means a definitive criteria, just a reference point. We can always address films individually if need be.

And of course, as we discussed in that thread, repeat films (films which were also present in the Horror tournament) are OK to nominate here as well!

Enough caveats, on to the rules!

Rules:

*There will be a total of 128 nominations
*Please wait until 3 other people have cast a nomination before nominating another
*Please list the number in which your entry lands for easier compilation

Once all 160 films are listed, we will begin compiling them and sorting into groups.

Alright, here we go!

To clarify...

The settings for science fiction are often contrary to those of consensus reality, but most science fiction relies on a considerable degree of suspension of disbelief, which is facilitated in the reader's mind by potential scientific explanations or solutions to various fictional elements. Science fiction elements include:

A time setting in the future, in alternative timelines, or in a historical past that contradicts known facts of history or the archaeological record. (Back to the Future)

A spatial setting or scenes in outer space (e.g. spaceflight), on other worlds, or on subterranean earth. (2001: A Space Odyssey)

Characters that include aliens, mutants, androids, or humanoid robots and other types of characters arising from a future human evolution. (Aliens)

Futuristic or plausible technology such as ray guns, teleportation machines, and humanoid computers. (Star Wars)

Scientific principles that are new or that contradict accepted physical laws, for example time travel, wormholes, or faster-than-light travel or communication. (Event Horizon)

New and different political or social systems, e.g. dystopian, post-scarcity, or post-apocalyptic. (The Truman Show)

Paranormal abilities such as mind control, telepathy, telekinesis, and teleportation. (Scanners)

Other universes or dimensions and travel between them. (Pleasantville)

Not really...If a movie that takes place in a universe without electricity is considered sci-fi then anything can be considered sci-fi. Lord of the Rings is as fantasy as you can get. To my recollection there isn't even ALCHEMY in Lord of the Rings. There's absolutely no science whatsoever in Lord of the Rings. Close that can because there was no reason to open it.

Pleasantville is more race relations and prejudice and the not so perfect world of small town American in the 1950's than anything else and I do agree it's fantasy. It would be different if the movie was ABOUT purposely going into a black and white world to give it colour to see what would happen or for a desired outcome but it just kind of happens to my recollection and it's more a storytelling device than anything else. Granted, I would be far more inclined to allow Pleasantville in than Lord of the Rings because at least Pleasantville has something to say about the world.

Let's try to keep fantasy out of it (LOTR). Science Fiction needs either some element of science or at least have thought-provoking speculation. LOTR doesn't fit that category, it is just set in a specific fantastical world.

Otherwise, I could nominate Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Or just about any martial arts fantasy movie with people flying through the air. It's outside of the realm of reality, but it's just the world those movies are set in. I could also nominate Il Mare or Ditto. But the time juxtaposition is just a setting to portray the romance. There's no science and there's no rumination or speculation on the meaning behind the fantastical elements.

Just one man's opinion.

My nomination: 48. Them. We need at least one radiation/giant bug movie right?

pathoftheturtle
06-24-2014, 05:11 PM
I like the way sci-fi can thematically comment on society, too, Matt, but implying that LotR is shallow just sounds biased here. Even the most insightful subtext on the human condition in a sword&sorcery film wouldn't make it part of the genre. Maybe a case could be made with one set on another world, such as Krull, that merely presenting that automatically equals scientific speculation on the existence of different worlds, but an imaginary past? And Pleasantville is not just about society - it's also about television. It is metafiction, that's how those things happen in it. Nobody thinks "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" is scifi, do they?

I can't believe I just nominated Wall-E since it was meant to be nomination number 1 lol. My problem is there is a lot of older sci-fi I haven't watched and probably won't. It's kind of strange when it comes to sci-fi I need some production value involved, yet I don't want a special effects fest...it's always been hard for me to take some old sci-fi sets and costumes the least bit seriously.

guys, it's not fair!!!!! I didn't even have a chance to participate, because of the time zone!! I don't see the complete list yet, but is it somehow possible to squeeze in my nominations (assuming they haven't been nominated yet):

Jacob's Ladder

Stalker (I see pablo has nominated Solaris, but I can't find Stalker)

I am so sad, I so really really wanted to participate!!! one can't exclude bears only because they don't live where everyone does...

also, with such haste, everyone will tomorrow slap their heads and yell, "how could I forget this, this and that!!"

also, when all nominations take place within a few hours, the selection belongs solely to those few who happened to be there at that time

Jacob's Ladder probably doesn't qualify as science fiction. And, after all, you are the one who talked Fernando into going ahead when he was still planning to wait longer.

The reason I opposed Somewhere In Time (and in part why I still oppose Time Bandits) is that the time travel is supernatural. Magic, not physics. Might just as well add Harry Potter.

I was discussing this with Feev a bit, in the future I think we need to come up with a new way to nominate films. I want everyone to get the chance to participate. This one went too fast and I know many members didn't even get the chance to post even one nomination.

(Star Wars)

Scientific principles that are new or that contradict accepted physical laws, for example time travel, wormholes, or faster-than-light travel or communication (Event Horizon)

Might just as well add Harry Potter.

how has no one nominated films like Tron and Dune... ?Because they stink? Nah, that can't be it... several people nominated even worse films.

As I previously posted, films concerning time travel are accepted as part of being part of science fiction.

Says the guy who thinks Pleasantville is sci-fi. :nope:

Don't get me wrong, I love the movie. But sci-fi it is not.

Not only does Pleasantville feature an alternative universe / dimension, but it also revolves around the soft Sci-fi elements of sociology, anthropology and political science.

It might not feature the hard Sci-fi elements of chemistry and physics, but it is still a true science fiction movie nonetheless, just like The Truman Show and 1984.

Holy shit! I woke up this morning thinking you guys would probably be at around 80 or so, and you filled out all 128 spots lol. This has gotta be some kinda record, I can't remember any other tournament filling up fast.

I'll get started on compiling the list.

Were there any nominations we disagreed with?

guys, it's not fair!!!!! I didn't even have a chance to participate, because of the time zone!! I don't see the complete list yet, but is it somehow possible to squeeze in my nominations (assuming they haven't been nominated yet):

Jacob's Ladder
The Jacket
Back to the Future 3
Mimic
Stalker (I see pablo has nominated Solaris, but I can't find Stalker)

I am so sad, I so really really wanted to participate!!! one can't exclude bears only because they don't live where everyone does...

also, with such haste, everyone will tomorrow slap their heads and yell, "how could I forget this, this and that!!"

also, when all nominations take place within a few hours, the selection belongs solely to those few who happened to be there at that time

Sorry bears, I honestly had no idea the titles would fill up this quickly, it's insane. Typically it takes 2-3 days.

Also - it seems like we're in disagreement about Time Bandits and Lord of the Rings being nominated. Would the users who nominated those two please choose another title?

Or maybe even let Jean have one of them ... (bats eyelashes)

Nominations started and ended while I was at work. Bummer.

LotR doesn't belong here. You gotta draw the line somewhere, a wizard and a staff, dragons and fantastical creatures put this firmly in the fantasy territory.

As far as I am aware, Lord of the Rings wasn't nominated in the end.

Time Bandits is certainly Sci-fi as it not only revolves around a central premise of time travel, but it also features a strong element of Steampunk, which is another sub-genre within Sci-fi.

And, after all, you are the one who talked Fernando into going ahead when he was still planning to wait longer.
the point isn't when we start. The point is how we proceed and when we finish. It must be organized the way everyone can participate. As Heather :rose: said:

I was discussing this with Feev a bit, in the future I think we need to come up with a new way to nominate films. I want everyone to get the chance to participate. This one went too fast and I know many members didn't even get the chance to post even one nomination.

but if for some reason it doesn't fit the definition of SciFi (I am not really sure, maybe it doesn't and for that reason will be kicked out early, which will be a pity), let it be Mimic.

... in the future I think we need to come up with a new way to nominate films. ...Oh, I agree. I have always thought that the regular method here leaves a lot to be desired.

(Star Wars)

Scientific principles that are new or that contradict accepted physical laws, for example time travel, wormholes, or faster-than-light travel or communication (Event Horizon)

The reason I opposed Somewhere In Time (and in part why I still oppose Time Bandits) is that the time travel is supernatural. Magic, not physics. Might just as well add Harry Potter.

As I previously posted, films concerning time travel are accepted as part of being part of science fiction.

IMHO it was wrong to block the nomination for Somewhere In Time.I'm not impressed by appeal to authority. That definition is fine for SYFY, but it is certainly not unquestionable for other purposes. Some may choose to include the fantasy genre into the science fiction category, but there has been consensus in this group to differentiate. I have only attempted to apply consistency on the subject. You are being too liberal even as others reason too stringently. Time Bandits and Somewhere In Time happen to be a couple of my personal favorite films in general, but they belong in this contest no more than titles which were rejected by various means along the way.

You could say the same for the original X-Men and so on.I wish that had been decided clearly the first time it was asked, before the nominations began. It's tricky -- on one hand, it may be unfair to judge a series on its worst parts; on the other, maybe unfair to judge it on its best parts.

So which one of Jean's nominations is allowed through?

I haven't seen either Jacob's Ladder or Mimic so cannot comment on their legitimacy as being Sci-fi, although Wikipedia quite clearly states that Mimic is Science Fiction Horror.

Back to the Future III is unquestionably Sci-fi.

Comments anyone?
