Nice! Looking forward to the next four ;) and great to see you posting again, it seems a while ago. (not that I should complain, I'm hardly posting anything myself at the moment).

Thanks Michaël. I'm trying not the buy much at the moment - most of the new books are either trades or ordered a long time ago.

Thanks Brian. I agreed the artwork is great. At this point I can't disagreed/agreed with you on the story, as I must admit, I haven't read 'The Fireman' yet. It's on my to-read list. I haven't had too much time to read recently, so I am very slowly reading Cronin's 'City of Mirrors' at the moment.

Another Wednesday, another RPW. Well not quite a proof per se. These pages were used as a final check before the novel is bound and completed for publication. They came straight from the owner of Grant Publishing, Robert Weiner, via Betts. They are 1 of only 10 F&G produced.

How 'sad' can us collectors be? Six trips to four different towns/cities and over a dozen stores, I have finally completed my UK editions of 'Sleeping Beauties' this morning. They look nice on the shelf but they have completely filled my first edition shelves. All the Waterstones in my area have now sold out of 1sts and are now stocking fourth printings. I suspect just north of me in the West Midlands, Simon has completely cleared out their stock as well.

I search my field for a cash cow
Or maybe just a golden plow
Which I can melt and sell for cash
Then buy more King books with my stash

His books on my shelves multiply
My money's gone but I don't cry
I just go buy another one
And repeat, "Son of a gun!"

One moth here, a tiger there
Bring more on 'cause I don't care
A second mortgage that's the thing
So I can go and buy more King!

QUESTION

Over the weekend I picked up a copy of the UK Trade paperback at London Gatwick Airport for a member. I was asked to pick up all variant covers. Admittedly they only had two copies, BUT has anyone seen any other animal on the airport edition apart from a Tiger! The picture on Facebook that Simon posted upthread is a tiger, the copy Steve has is a tiger and all the copies I've seen (two) are tigers. I think possibly the airport edition only contains a tiger, as Hodder and most collectors don't consider airport editions collectable and probably wouldn't go through the additional expense of producing additional covers.

I've been trying to get a few promo items for the 'King For A Day' promotion for King's 70th birthday.

Hodder & Stoughton marked Stephen King’s 70th birthday this September with a month of celebrations in honour of his books and films and featured interactive events on- and offline. Celebrations included events and bookshop promotions around the world (UK, Australia and New Zealand) for which promo items were given out.

Stephen King - 'A King For A Day' - UK Promo booklet including short extract from 'Sleeping Beauties', promo postcard and bookmarks. There is also a Tote Bag which I still need.

https://i.imgur.com/31MyCSG.jpg

Stephen King - 'A King For A Day' - UK Paperback Covers Postcard Set (If the covers on the back of the bookmark were produced as postcards, I have seven of possibly nine -- but I have yet to see 'The Gunslinger' and 'The Stand' postcards.

https://i.imgur.com/zKsIe9Q.jpg

It also featured a partnership with the BFI (British Film Institute) which ran a "Stephen King on Screen" season at BFI Southbank, including both adaptations of his novels and film favourites selected by King himself. The celebrations incorporated three dedicated days of “King for a Day” events with unique fan screenings and panels.

Stephen King - BFI On Screen - UK Promo Postcard.

This promotion then led onto the 'Sleeping Beauties' promotion. This is one of a set of four promotional postcards.

For some reason I have found it very difficult to obtain any US FDNS proofs. I've previously obtained the CD unbound proof, but this is the first bound US FDNS proof I have added to my collection. This copy is one of 20 produced and has cover artwork based on the Limited Signed CD edition. I only need to find the other five FDNS US proofs!

Interesting new Joe Hill book released 11/02/2017. It is the UK Tenth Anniversary Hardback release of Heart Shaped Box by Gollancz. It's been ten years - really!?!?! It is a dustjacketless small (BCE) sized printed board hardcover. It includes an exclusive 4 page introduction by Joe for this tenth anniversary edition called 'The Tell-Tale Heart' (written May, 2017). Also, includes Chapter one of Snapshot as a sample in promotion of Strange Weather. I hope to get this signed on Monday at Birmingham. If anybody wishes this edition (£14.99) -- just PM me -- and I will try to get you a copy. I have looked for a US version but can't find one.

I received the new CD Doubleday Years Lettered yesterday, and I must say it's a magnificent production. I paid a bit extra to have the Maitz and Chadbourne remarque sheets, which I'm also very happy with -- I really like Maitz's 'Exploding Boiler' and Chadbourne's 'Old Decomposing Lady in the bath'.
I still don't believe my name's in the book, it seems so surreal seeing it there. I did not buy the other editions of the book, so yesterday was the first time I've seen the book and text in print.

I haven't updated my collection thread for a few months, as everything has been outgoing rather than additions to the collection. Many thanks to everybody who has bought a book or a stack of them in some cases! I am so grateful to all the buyers. It has helped my out of a sticky and unlucky period. I feel I'm getting back on track. I have decided to no longer collect S/Ls and lettereds (I have sold about half my S/Ls (mostly US) and most of my lettereds). However, I have continued buying a few proofs, after a few months pause, as I find this side of collecting fascinating and very rewarding. I will never get them all (as that is impossible, right?) but it's very satisfying to tick another one or two off the list. The fewer that I need, the harder it's getting to find the missing ones. I have enough for a couple of months of Rare Proof Wednesdays, so come Wednesday I may have something to post. :)

MikeDuke

Very sorry you had to sell just about everything. But I too, want to get more into the proof side of things. I only have two right now so that is a weakness in my collection for sure. I won't be able to get all, like you indicate, or the real expensive ones, but I hope to get enough to get a nice set. Good luck on you proof collecting. I am looking forward to seeing what you have been collecting and I can't wait to see your rare proofs. The two that I have are The Talisman and the smaller From a Buick 8 which is flat signed. But again, good luck.

Thanks. Proof collecting is easy at first, there are a lot of common ones to get. Then you hit a brick wall as the remaining ones you need are almost impossible to find (and more expensive) and only come up once every few years. But, good luck in your search, it's fun. The UK From a Buick 8 is not an easy to find signed. I don't think I've seen once before. Congratulations.

The start of few RPWs. For some reason I have found it very difficult to find the proofs of this King title, but I've now found most of them!

Congrats on the FDNS--it's a tough one as is the white spine--I hope another one of those turns up in the near future. I bet I know where the last one ended up. So good to see you back and I look forward to the additional reveals. I went back through your recent acquisitions and they are just spectacular!

Thanks Jeff. I’ve certainly had trouble with FDNS. It looks like the black tape state is unobtainable, as you have the only known copy. As for the white tape, you’ll have to wait and see.

Thanks Luke. I’ll start with the not so rare and built up.

I didn’t know about RPW until seeing your most recent posts here. What a great idea! Like everyone else, I’m also looking forward to seeing the proofs you’re collecting.

I have three King proofs at the moment, none of which are rare, but I still think they’re pretty cool. Just recently I added an Algernon Blackwood proof which I think may qualify as rare, but I don’t really know for sure. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot about the rarity of proofs following your collection, though!

Thank you, Adam. Rare Proof Wednesday was first started by Paul (zelig) about two or three years ago, but I have continued the tradition periodically when I have collected up a bunch of proofs. It's been a while, but I now have a few unposted ones. Congratulations on your rare Algernon Blackwood proof.

A good proof for a good book!

Thanks Steve.

Thanks Jeff. Yes, the chase is fun. The rare ones seem to hardly come up for sale, but there seem to have been a lot of them recently.

Thanks Antoni. It certainly is an interesting niche, especially the manuscript proofs where you can read an earlier form of the novel with deleted scenes. I have a couple of those to post.
A rare one to post next week.

That is just the coolest thing I think... to get to read an alternate version of a King story. Awesome.

I find it fascinating discovering extra text in these manuscripts. I've compared 3 and a half manuscripts so far. 'The Shine (Shining)' was the most significant so far, with large portions of text edited out. 'Getting It On' had a lot of text added for the final book 'Rage' and originally had a slightly alternate ending, which you can find here-- www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?18338-Book-Collection-jonp/page130.
There is another famous novel that had large amounts of text rewritten that I haven't posted yet, but soon. 'The Tommyknockers' I have only just started on, but doesn't seem to have too many changes so far, apart from the odd edited-out paragraph.

A copy of the 'Getting It On' manuscript, I don't think it's an in-house copy - but it's old. Very interesting just the same.
