Very nice!

Thanks Ari.

Very meticulous Jon! I expect 50 years down the line, someone posting on the NP&J thread that they have just bought the original hand written notes that someone called 'JonP' created for the extremely scarce and hard to find CD limited of The Shining...

As soon as mine arrives I will be off down the road to get you to sign it

Thanks Simon. I'm a bit of a perfectonist when it comes to this sort of work. It was very enjoyable.

Wonderful work Jon. Blows my mind your contribution to this edition.

Thanks Antoni. Blows my mind too.

Very very very cool stuff for sure!

Those are really neat!
Awhile back I tried to get copies or anything possible from the first french publishers that bought King's books, but complicated to track down archives as the publishers have been merged with others etc etc.
Getting old stuff like is pretty cool !

Thanks Jeremy.

You have been a very busy and productive collector! Congratulations on the new additions and thanks for your contributions to the King collecting community.

Thanks Jeff. Yes, I have been busy collecting lately. That will have to slow down in the future.

Congratulations on the new CD proofs and good to hear more on the manuscript story. I'm looking forward to seeing the final product.

Thanks Paul. It's been very interesting finding out about the hidden aspects behind some of these proofs, especially insight from Brian at CD.

Just pure awesomeness, my friend! Congrats!

Thanks Brian.

Amazing stuff Jon and still absolutely delighted for you on being part of the new edition of The Shining. :)

Thanks Alan. I can't wait for the finished book.

Rare Proof Wednesday Part 16 - I was hoping to post a very scarce UK proof today but it did not arrive in the post today, so it will have to wait until next weeks RPW. I did not know this UK partial proof existed until two days ago as it is not on the list and I have never seen one posted. Therefore, I will post these two US proofs of moderate rarity and which are occasionally available. The Billy Blockade was produced in a 60 copy print run.

It's one of the sampler proofs like Blaze, but one I hadn't heard of before, from 2003 I think. That gives it away as there was only one book in 2003!

Rare Proof Wednesday Part 17

Proof #112 - Stephen King - The Dark Tower V : Wolves Of The Calla - UK 'The Return Of The King' Advance Uncorrected Sampler Proof

I have managed to acquire three different UK Sampler Proofs recently but I was not aware of this one before it came up for sale. This 32-page stapled glossy covered sampler seems to be extremely scarce. Does anyone else have one of these or know about them?
It has an introduction and contains the Prologue of the story. There is also information on the UK DT I-IV PB releases and a presentation boxset, the basic storylines of DT I-VI, information on the Concordance Volume One and release information on DT V.

I think it was decided a couple of years ago not to include the stapled samplers in John's list, only the bound ones that actually state something about being a proof. But there are so many variations that every classification is somewhat arbitrary.

And that is the UTD sampler I was referring to. Haven't seen one in years! I sold mine to Barry McGee a couple of years ago and haven't seen one since.

Yeah I don't think I've seen that one before. Of course you have a copy! Man, I need to brush up on my sampler collection! Not sure if you would consider partial proofs in the same category but there's a few of those as well (Skeleton Crew, The Stand Uncut, Carrie trade paperback, Just After Sunset and Black House.) BTW I had a look at the bibliography and the DTV sampler seems to be B170.

Today I received a second copy of The Fireman UK Proof today that I intented to sell on. It had a large sized promotional postcard with it that I did not have and was going to keep. When I unwrapped the book it was glaringly obvious that it was a different state of the UK proof.
Below are photos of my original copy - I know there are limited copies out there but is this same as other members copies. I would be grateful if members could check their copies to see if they differ from the one below and I will then post the different state.

I thought this one may be the more usual state, but photographs on eBay don't usually show the side of the book. When I bid on the book I was unaware of the difference. The postcard insert is advertising the Waterstones Red-edged 1st Hardback so it seems the publisher sprayed the page edges of some of the proofs to promote the Waterstones edition. However, they did not spray them red!?!

Does the yellow "spray" on the edges bleed in to the pages, or is it just a nature of the page stock they used?

The spray does not bleed into the page edges, but it does not seem the best paper stock. The photos don't do the vibrant colour of the yellow justice. It's a very bright yellow a bit like the colour they paint the front end of trains over here. Almost Day-Glo.

Very nice, Jon!

Thanks Brian.

Rare Proof Wednesday Week 20 - A big thanks goes to Michael for making this proof (Productions pages) available and for his awesome packing and quick dispatch. This next proof is a laser print-out of The New Lieutenant's Rap that was used during the production of the chapbook. There are annotations in red ink by an employee of Stinehour Press, Lunenburg, Vermont. The pages are designated with the words 'rough' and 'smooth' to indicate which side of the two-sided paper should be used on which page. The publisher wanted facing pages to show the same texture. On the front page of the proof there are two different samples on the cover material attached. I have photographed these with the finished unsigned proof to show the difference in shades. These pages came from Michael Alpert's personal files and include a signed covering letter.

Jon, first of all congrats on obtaining a copy of the UK Fireman proof ! I'd expected them show up more regularly on the secondary market as the white paged version is still missing in my collection.

Gollancz created two different versions of the proof. The white paged one is the 'regular' version. The yellow paged one is the proof that was sent out to select Waterstones stores and is more rare, approximately less than 350 copies. Overall Gollancz made a lot less proofs of The Fireman.
So, there are even different versions of the proof of this title :)

Since we're on the subject, Gollancz also made two different promotional postcards. I've seen the Camp Wyndham one on Ebay a couple of times but there's also one of Martha Quinn's Island

Thanks for the information, Marco. I suspected the sprayed one was for Waterstones. I'm surprised that the possible print run is up to 350 as they seem very scarce. I haven't seen many UK proofs at all for sale, I think I've only seen 4-5 for sale including the two I have bought.
I'll have to keep an eye out for the Martha Quinn's Island Promo card. I haven't heard on that before. Another Fireman item to get!!!

I think there must be some misunderstanding about the print run for the yellow sprayed proof. If there were 350 out there then I would expect more on the market.

Jon, I'm afraid Gollancz wasn't able to provide me with that info. They informed me that they made about 350 yellow sprayed ones and that was a limited number, so there are more white paged copies. It's quite a mystery why any of these UK proofs rarely show up on the secondary market.

Rare Proof Wednesday Week 21 - Two US proofs today. I have extended RPW by another week by obtaining a new rare UK proof which I'll post next week. With Finders Keepers, I thought I did pretty well by buying it for $40. It was advertised on Abebooks with a flaw of a noticeable bend. I was expecting in to have a massive crease in the cover but it is near perfect apart for a gentle bend in the book possibly due to the book being not stored flat (as shown in the last photograph). It looks very nice on the shelf.

Man, what are you going to collect next??? You will be done proofs here in another few months! lol Artwork up next? lol

I think there are about 6-7 proofs that I would be able to buy tomorrow that I need, but my proof buying is certainly going to slow down dramatically as the remaining ones are getting tougher to find. I think that I will take a break from collecting (mostly to pay the proofs off) for a six to nine month period as I did about 3-4 years ago. I was initially looking at selling a few of my S/Ls to finance some of these rare proofs but I didn't in the end as I have real difficulty in selling any my King books. The only book that I would possibly buy soon is the next deluxe PS edition if it is signed by King. Otherwise I have no plans short-term.

Rare Proof Wednesday Week 22 - I am really glad to have added this rare UK proof to my collection as it has been on my want list for quite some time. They were produced as a limited edition of 100 numbered copies but I believe many of them were pulped due to the misspelling of 'Limted' on the limitation page. Recently I have been offered two copies of this proof; the first as part of a set of three UK DT proofs (DTV-VII) at an incredible $3270 (£2500) and another on its own for $1550 (£1200). I politely declined the offers. I heard that another copy recently sold for $1300 (£915) if I remember correctly. However, I managed to pick up this beautiful copy for a reasonable price.

Congratulations! I wasn't aware that copies were discarded due to the 'limted' misspelling (which I didn't know about either). And neither did I know that they were going for such outrageous prices!

You can probably tell that there's a lot I don't know... (and it's even worse since I became a father... I have no short- or long-term memory left to speak of...)

Thanks, Michaël. As far as pulped copies go, I am only relying on a couple of comments on the site, they may not be accurate. The highest prices did not sell, as IMHO they are extremely overpriced. I was surprised one sold at $1300!

Kids have certainly have addled my brain as well!

I am pretty sure I sold one a year or so ago, for about $100 or so. Shit! Don't remember who I sold it to...

Ouch! Yes, it seems to be worth more than that.

How did I forget it was Wednesday?! Very nice one, Jon! I had no idea how rare that one is!

Thanks Dez. Yes, it's quite rare. I've only seen a handful for sale.

Nice, that was the one that a newbie had was it not Jon? Good grab mate:)

Thanks Kris. Yes, it was the one that appeared in the proof thread for an opinion a couple of weeks ago by Hightower. It appeared on eBay UK and I snapped it up.

I think this was the last of the endless UK variant Dustjackets that I needed (excluding proof DJs). I'm happy to finally have it my collection. I would like to thank Alec for his generous gift of this elusive variant 1st.

When I first saw the red-lettered state I thought that one was the anomaly - the copy I got from a local bookstore when the book came out was the silver-lettered state. Only after seeing more and more pics of other books and discussing the book here I figured out that I got lucky. Got myself a red-lettered state as well and sold them as a set a while later.

I'm not sure which colour I like better.

Thanks Michaël. I was unaware of this variant until only a year or so ago. I never noticed any differences in the bookstores at the time. Now with recent releases, I look at the dustjackets and books closely to see if there are any variants and compare them between bookstores so as not to miss any potential variant at release.

Lots of collectors seem to have received this one weeks ago. As I tend to receive my PS titles grouped together in batches with my subscription, I sometimes have to wait awhile to get my copy. I'm really glad to have now received this title, it's very nicely produced and I really like the collection of photos of previous covers of 'Salem's Lot endpages.

The only printing error I have heard about with the book is in the dates on the copyright page. I think this error was noticed after printing the whole run so all copies had an errata sheet slipped in. Was there other errors, Jeremy? Photo below of errors.

This one will have to do for now.... I hate to think what outrageous price the proper lettered copy would be advertised at, being three separate leather bound books, therefore increasing the binding costs significantly.
