Hmmm ....

I know, these groups are going to be tough. All good films moved on.

bears, expectedly, voted Repulsion, which is not fair: Blair Witch is the best horror film in this bracket

Well aren't we voting, again, for the best film which happens to be in the given genre, which is rather inclusive rather than exclusive?

So many great choices. Went with Evil Dead II.

How is Evil Dead getting all these votes

It's Evil Dead II. Big difference.

Your favorite movie might just make it on ;)

I'm surprised no one's voted for Blair Witch yet. Also thank you to the other kind soul that voted for House :couple:

Only two votes for Repulsion certainly makes me sad

And I'd say that about House of 1000 Corpses :(

And no votes for Freaks, which beat out Funny Games to get here...

I can't remember if I nominated Freaks or if someone else did. However, I do know I voted for it in a previous round. It's a hugely influential and effective film. It's just there are so many good choices and we only get one vote. Heck, I'm one that thought Blair Witch did what it set out to do, in spades. It should get some votes also.

Poltergeist is overrated. More votes for House of 1,000 Corpses and Evil Dead 2!!!!

If we're talking about one and the same Poltergeist, it is not overrated - it is unwatchable.

I don't understand anything.

Jean did you ever go into why you didn't like Poltergeist at all? I'll give a glance through the threads.

I think I posted somewhere. I believe it may have some nostalgic value for Americans. Other than this, it has none. Sitting through it was excruciating.

I agree with Jean. I thought Poltergeist was bloody awful...

Jean

it is moving on, though

I don't regret it that Repulsion doesn't have a chance - it is not a horror movie, and I didn't expect it to move on anyway - but Blair Witch??? Left behind? By Poltergeist, of all things????????? I don't understand anything anymore.

I think you’re right. This was one of the bigger horror movies I heard about all the time when I was a kid. Somehow I never got around to watching it until about 5 years ago or so.

I think I had high expectations for it and was actually pretty disappointed. The legends surrounding the making of the film and the supposed curse on the actors are kind of interesting though.

Check out its Wikipedia entry, especially the reception part: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poltergeist_%281982_film%29

Specifically what?

Jean
05-14-2014, 11:49 PM
specifically, how a film that has absolutely no qualities can be "regarded by many critics as a classic of the horror genre"

fernandito

Jean, I think you just convinced me to rewatch Poltergeist asap...

Before we move any further in the tournament I want to make absolute sure it's not just coasting on nostalgia before I decide to vote for or against it.

I'm really surprised you dislike Poltergeist so much, Jean. I feel it's a really well-made film. I don't really see the "nostalgic value for Americans" viewpoint, either. It's part of American pop culture, I guess, but in and of itself that doesn't mean anything, I don't think. Many films are, from The Wizard of Oz to The Fast and the Furious movies.

Jean

I dislike it so much only because it has supplanted really worthy films here. Otherwise, I would just have forgotten it immediately after the first closing credit mercifully rolled.

It is not a bad film or anything. It's just mediocrity incarnate.
