View Full Version : Dark Tower Same-Number Sets: Wanted page !

Hi Folks,

according to the Dark Tower Same-Number Sets: Who owns them? Topic,
I asked myself for weeks now, why we do not have a place where we collect the searching members also.

I mean, getting a full # Set of the Dark Tower is (if you do not have the luck or founds to buy it complete, or have been one of the DT1 owners)
a long and exiting journey, but you often need any little peace of information that you might get.

Thats why i want to get the Grandt "Wanted page" back online, and give everybody the chance to place the # s/he is searching for here in this topic.
I will complete it as a list according to the owners page.

One note: To be on the list doesn't mean anything else but: somebody who owns a # will have the chance to find you.

If more then one member searches for the same #, i will just add both so that they can find a deal. There is no demand regarding exclusivity, it is just informal.

I know we have the search page, but this is changing fast, and you have no chance to search for a # as the term is to short, and people write it different.
Thats why i see a demand for this list ;D

If you are searching for a certain # drop me a PM or post here in this topic!
Hope you will all be able to find what you need!

Inspired from Merlin, i will add DTs that you are holding in a second list. For trade or not, it will tell the people where the # is.

Hey Merlin,

thanks for your addition, as i am unsure if you are actually searching for the other books your idea inspired a second list with books "i hold" (without being on the trip to complete)
this is a great addition, as anybody who might have the other ones can get in contact with you (or not) or whatever.

Thanks for this input!

IF i added you to the holding list by error , i will change this !
And i hope everybody else will go to the shelves now, and get my their numbers ;D

I am holding DT III LE #889 & DT IV-VII, WTTK, LSOE LE #625, WTTK UK LE #153

I am searching for DT LE #153 for all Grant books.

I was thinking, if one were completely crazy about having a definitive matching DT signed set then it would also have the UK Wizard & Glass, The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three S/L audio sets plus the Wind Through the Keyhole UK S/L which is only 200 copies. That would mean there could only be 200 possible matching sets.

I am holding DT I #196 and II #473

I actually know who needs Gunslinger #196 to complete a full number set (he's on this site), and he know's it's available to him. All he has to do is pull the trigger.

What is he waiting for? I would even give you a deposit to hold it... if the reason was not enough cash. I think (for me) the holy grail of collecting King is a matching set... Cool of you to hold onto it man!

Seeking ANY Dark Tower (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII) # 171

Also Seeking Dark Tower Books # 203 (Paying Layaway on V & VI but I don't have them in hand yet)

I OWN LSoE and TWTtK # 171 and plan on trying to complete this numbered set (or at least II-TWTtK)
I also OWN a PC DT:VII

Might never be able to afford a DT:I Gunslinger S/N LE and it will probably be the last book I go for.
More likely I will attempt to get a fine/fine 1st edition and get it signed in person by Sai King.
I DO plan on completing a set from II-TWTtK.
I'd be a candidate as a prospective buyer for a "bargain" copy of I (eventually)

I also am looking for ANY King S/N LE # 171 (especially Doctor Sleep to match my copy of the Shining)

Divemaster is a good man.

If you're interested, here is the story of how the rest of the set came together. I posted this a couple years ago in the matching number set thread (with a couple minor edits):

Nov. 2004: DT II, III, IV - Barry R. Levin Science Fiction & Fantasy. I heard about the whole S/L concept at the old TDT.net forums and decided to look into purchasing some. I saw these on ABE listed separately, called up Barry, and worked out a "volume discount" deal.

June 2011: LSOE, LSOE AE - John Hanic. He bought them on eBay in order to secure the right to purchase TWITKH. I bought another set specifically to trade with John, so he could still get TWITKH.

Oct 2011: I can't attend the King reception and signing at Fall of the Books back East, so Ralph Mulleins takes my 1st/1st of The Gunslinger to the signing.

Nov 2011: DTIV UK (not really necessary for a complete set) - In January 2011 I just missed this at Betts - saw one of those SOLD signs that David puts out before removing items from the site. I contacted David, but it was too late. He had just shipped it out to a buyer in Australia. Flash forward ten months: Recently while perusing the forum over at Cemetery Dance, I ran across a photo of the book in someone's collection thread. I contacted the owner and we worked a straight across trade. He was not a member here at TDT at the time, but he is now. Thanks, Grant (Bad Penny)!

Dec 2011: DT V, VI, VII: Simon had recently purchased these at a Heritage auction I missed. He posted here at TDT looking for the others. We worked out a sale/purchase.

Here is the set, including my signed (but not S/L) 1st/1st edition of DTI:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books%20II/King-DTSLmatchI_2.jpg
(Note: I also have #196 of TWTTKH, but it was not yet released at the time of this photo.)

This set is especially meaningful to me because of all the collector friends that have assisted with trades or sales to help me put this together.

The UK S/L of TWTTKH in the photo is #121.

You are welcome and that is why it is a "Great Story". Because of the "Family nature" of this collecting community. Not as great a story but my DT s/l set was owned once by David at betts, and then divemaster (david), and now myself :) three members of the TDT.org community.

Then, Becca pointed out DT II - drawing of the three 464 to me which I am now paying for.

Great community here for sure.

That's amazing, and also disturbing, because he probably has numerous copies that someone out there is looking for to complete a set. :)

Even if you average the value at $500 per (which would mean he really doesn't have many DT1s, or probably even TWTTKs, neither of which I'd guess are true), that's 50 grand in DT SL. With a more reasonable distribution he's probably way over 100k.

A couple of years ago Shibus (who should post more often) posted a pic from someone's collection showing 19 Gunslinger S/Ls. IIRC this sparked some debate, which I can imagine because by himself that collector basically made sure that 4% of all possible matching sets will never be complete (unless he himself owns them). I'm not sure if these were Jmaher's or someone else's.

It's too bad that Shibus removed the pic because it was a sight to behold...

I am pretty sure I know who this person is. Years ago he won S/L Gunslinger #465 on ebay and I had a couple of DT S/Ls with the same number. He won't live forever. His heirs (or the state) will dispose of them.
It seems like a weird case of "I have them, you don't". There is no logical reason to own numerous copies, just a quirky collecting thing.

Haven't personally called him yet. Guess I'm feelin Purdy intimidated since he hasn't even replied to an email. If I did swap DT 1 S/L's, I would definitely do it in person. He lives in Lubbock so it would be just a short flight for me (in Houston).

Said her uncle collected all kinds of books and when she seen mine she said he had lots of King and when he died her aunt sold them at a flea market... for dollars n cents per book. When I showed her pics she recognized Cujo and the Gunslinger. She said he had a few displayed very proudly and those she could remember quite well... can you imagine? I made note of it in my files.....not sure if this is still true..

Why would someone want so many reprints? :)

Its not this only "collection topic" where i met "single stack collectors" (don't know if its the right word in engl)

what means that they do not go for a certain group to complete, but for a certain item to get as often as possible.
In pure terms of collecting this has clear up and downsides.

Met a guy once who held more then 75% of a limited item, and said that he will not stop until he get the whole series.
I think that this is a little bit crazy, but honest - what else then the are we - searching all over the planet to get a special # ;D ?

Guess i won't be the one to throw the first stone here, even if it goes very agains the "main-stream" collectors goals.
But this is the salt in our soup , isn't it ;D

Does anyone have or know who has S/L Dark Tower III through VII #1208 I would like to start building a collection of this number. I have seen others on here that have built a collection of a certain number and would like some input on this task. I do not own any of the S/L of DT yet, should I buy now any number that I can find that is a good deal in hopes of using them for trade when and if I do find the number that I am looking for or should i wait to find said number?

Hi,
i saw your posting, and thought... hey that # i do have, but my spare DTVII is #1280 ;D

To search your complete set is quite a task - i followed my # 15 years back, and this was only possible because everybody i meet was willing to search old emails and letters,
to provide me new names and persons - and i still did not made it until now. So its hard, but if you like the digging, its a lot of fun + you meet interesting people.

I wanted to complete my set first, and then see if i can get the missing numbers. Be aware that it might be impossible , thats why i completed first.
Most of the books are available from time to time, DTI, DTII and TWTTKH are the hardest part , but even they are available from time to time.

However you decide - good luck!

Why would you even want to try to start a numbered set that you know WILL NEVER be complete?

The thrill of the hunt.
I do agree. One would be better served to save their money and buy a matched set of another number.

Well I have a two reasons for the number. The first and it may sound crazy is because it can not be a complete set. I have seen that numbers that fall in the magical 500 and bellow are more expensive higher numbers are easier to find bargains on. The number has a special meaning to me is the second reason. If I ever get to the point (fingers crossed) that I do get the possible III through VII I have already made up my mind to PC the rest.

I have decided to go ahead and try to instead of collect AE dark tower books to start going for the S/L DT books that are 2 book editions first then figure out what comes after that. I hopefully scored my first S/L and first King signed book Wolves of the Calla from Betts just waiting on a confirmation.

That's what great about collecting.

Each of our respective collections are unique/special based on the perspective of the owner.

A belated welcome to the site and we look forward to watching you on your journey.

I'm not new, but I didn't see the thread. I HAVE DT7 #1482, LSOE #1004 & TWTTK #180.

I'm LOOKING for #180, though, if the trades came up, I'd also switch to #95 to match some other books I have. I have no 'critical mass' around any particular number though yet, so really whatever gets me there in the long run.
