Jesus! I had a bid in early, but only for the mask. I've never seen it before and I think my max bid was twenty-something. But wow oh wow is that a big number. I hope someone is happy. I don't know why it went that high. I doubt it's for the mask ... but at the same time, I doubt it's for the folded poster. Folded movie posters are yuck, in my opinion.

Yep...cheaper. I'm not saying it's cheap by any means but the one you listed has a BIN of $429. Either way this is the first time I've seen these and they are both way more then I would ever pay for a figurine. :)

Have no idea why they use ´Miniatur-Trucks´ for the promotion. There are several other ´selfproduced´ trucks with SK printings, but only this 3 are ´official´ promo-trucks.

I don't collect promos, so maybe I'm out of line here....what makes these "official?" I mean, I could buy the empty truck box, put a pic of SK and a scene from The Green Mile, then take a toy truck and add some more pics to it. Were these actually handed out by the publisher?

Brice
11-14-2011, 06:50 AM
Unless i'm mistaken here and these were given away to promote a movie or book these fall more into an officially liscensed merchandise category (sort of like the Christine cars) than as true promos. They are still way cool though.

I don't think I used a 3 1/4 floppy disk in 10 years (4 of my computers don't have that hardware anymore), but one has a reader. I'll try to get the files...can't assure it'll work.

But the screensaver I'm pretty positive I have it somewhere.

Yeah, it's weird. I have a floppy disc module but when I put the disc in and try to open or explore it, I get a window telling me to please insert a disc into Drive A. My PC can't see or read the disc anymore.
I remember what the screensaver was though. It's a haunted house with some music and various things happening, like a cat walking across the screen or a window opening or closing. Then it all repeats. Very primitive compared to what we have today, but back then I thought it was great.

Here's something I found on my HD that I had scanned from my collection:

http://i508.photobucket.com/albums/s323/skyofcrack/CotC_card.jpg

I grabbed an extra few of these after filing one out at the screening back in '84. I don't remember if it had printing on both sides but all I have is this side.

I hated this film. I remember being really cruel on my card. Saying things like: I can't believe this film got financing. :P

Seriously though, does H&S JUST do King reissues? Not complaining, I wouldn't mind buying those at all (if the shipping wasn't so damn high, lol), I'm just saying.

Hmmmmm..... "The Touch" seems like an odd translation for a book titled with a date. What am I missing, Frank?

biomieg

'Der Anschlag' means the 'attack' or 'hit' or 'attempt' in this case, Bill. Similar to the Dutch word 'aanslag'. Both in German and in Dutch the word is a homonym and it also means 'touch' in the sense of hitting the keys on a keyboard or the strings of a guitar so I guess that's the translation you found.

But in this case it's the translation for attack/hit/attempt, i.e. the shooting of JFK.

Fascinating. As mentioned I see no box, but there is no image of the "unnumbered" limitation page. It's already at $365. Ordinarily I would say a S/L without the dust-jacket/slipcase/tray-case/box would be devalued by 50%. In 5 days we will know what the market dictates, but this bears watching. The book itself is such a magnificent piece of craftsmanship, and I would guess that Dolso could "clone" an original case, add a replica lining, affix the plaque etc. But that would be >$400 and then you have a clone box, not an original.
This is truly an odd beast.

I am such a pack rat. I found promotional letters/newsletters from 1990 that dealt with the release of the S/L The Stand. Some of you young pups might find these interesting as they come from a time before there was an internet and you had to really work to be a strong collector. It also helped to have a little luck along the way. The first letter is from the noted criminal/bookseller Michael J. Autrey and the second is a periodic newsletter/catalog from Craig Goden of The Time Tunnel.

After receiving these in the mail I took their suggestions and went to the B. Dalton Bookstore (anyone remember these?) in the shopping mall. I asked the store manager if he had ever heard of this. He hadn't but was willing to make some calls. He called me a couple of days later and said that he had talked to local sales representatives and that all their copies were spoken for. I accepted the fact that I had struck out and didn't think about it much for a while. The store manager called me out of the blue a couple of months later and asked if I was still interested in a copy. Of course, I was. A couple of months after that he called and said my book was in. I rushed to the mall to get it. The manager said that he and his employees had opened to box to take a look as none had ever seen anything like it before. He hoped I didn't mind. I didn't. As I was getting ready to pay he asked if I had a B. Dalton's card because I could save 10% if I did. I didn't but I bought one for $10 and got 10% taken off of my $325 purchase. It was a great day in my King collecting and I think the manager was almost as excited as I was. I tried to do all my subsequent retail book buying at his store until it closed. I think that store manager made multiple calls to his regional sales reps on my behalf over the weeks/months until a copy became available.

It was a great day in my King collecting and I think the manager was almost as excited as I was. I tried to do all my subsequent retail book buying at his store until it closed. I think that store manager made multiple calls to his regional sales reps on my behalf over the weeks/months until a copy became available.

Bob, I too remember those days, the challenge of tracking down a book that no one seemed to know anything about. For me The Stand s/l came from Chaucers Bookstore in Santa Barbara, California, I can't remember if they ordered it for me or it was a copy they had already ordered but I paid 500.00, and probably 50.00 in phone calls before I found them.

It is 1 of 2 SK items I have had to sell that still make me cry (I think you can guess what the other is). I sold my copy of The Stand to Roy Robbins, actually delivered it to him at his house, had a good time talking and seeing some of his goodies (he actually gave me a DJ for my Gunslinger, not perfect but much better than the one I had). Sold it for 775.00 which was ok at the time, that money made a house payment at a time I could not have.

I also remember B. Dalton, good bookstore back in the day.

Yes, Dave, I know what the other item is.

And not to turn this in to a "good old days" thread but it is amazing how far the internet has brought along the hobby of book collecting. I miss the thrill of actually finding a new bookstore and going into it with anticipation. Whenever I found myself in a new city the first think I would do is get a phone book, turn to "Book Dealers - Used and Rare" in the yellow pages, make a list of addresses and head out in the rental car looking to make some scores. Now days I pretty much know I am not going to find that item I desperately need in a new store because I have already searched the world's inventory on the internet. That and subscribing to every dealer's snail mail catalog, checking the mail daily, dropping everything and scanning the catalogs as soon as they arrived, making hurried phone calls to the dealer if there was something I needed listed and hoping someone hadn't beaten me to it. It's so much easier now but maybe a little of the fun is gone too.

Funny Bob. I used to do a lot of traveling in my old job, and what you say about discovering the stores in new cities really rings a bell. That's how I got my copy of The Stand s/l. I was in Ann Arbor, MI, and found The Haunted Bookshop. They had a couple copies of it offered for $850, if I remember correctly. I went in with $700 in one-hundred dollar bills and offered them for a copy. I got a copy that was (and still is!) in the original shipping box. The sight of that cash really swung the deal.

Ah, but you never know when you're gonna stumble across that rare little book store that has no online presence. They do still exist.

When I'm in a new town I still look for used and rare booksellers. Even if I don't find anything especially rare I love spending a whole day roaming through aisles of books. I also hit every yard sale and thrift store I can.

Very much enjoyed reading that, Bob. Not so extravagent a purchase in my case but I remember the pre-internet days too. I remember my friend went on holiday to Florida some years a go. I asked him to see if he could get me a copy of Creepshow. Sure enough, he asked in the bookstore. They didn't have one but got me one and mailed it directly to me in the UK. I was so excited when it arrived!! I also ordered 3 King 1st editions over the phone (yes really!!) from Stu at betts some years a go too. Getting that box from Maine was a great feeling. I also used to frequent a used bookstore in Glasgow many years a go too. I went in one day and the guy had the UK Xmas gift editions of Insomnia and Nightmares and Dreamscapes with the facsimile sigs, which I promptly bought. I had never seen a King book in a slipcase before, didn't even know they existed really. Happy days indeed!

While the internet has surely broadend scope, opportunity, and access for collectors the satisfaction derived from experiences like those shared by Bob, Dave, and John can't be duplicated.
