What if we have a thread on Stephen King's promo items?. There seem to be so many cool stuff that I've never seen before. I'm sure everyone have really neat stuff that others have not seen before. Just a thought.

There already is a thread !

It looks like they reprint 'The End of the Whole Mess' from SK.

"The End of the Whole Mess" is a short science fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction) story by Stephen King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_King) which was first published in Omni Magazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omni_Magazine) in 1986, and later published in the Nightmares and Dreamscapes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightmares_and_Dreamscapes) collection.

I always love seeing pics of that Cujo guitar.

I don't really think it is a promo item.
I think of promo items as things that where initially given away for free to promote a King book or movie.
If so, it very well would be the most expensive promo item I own.

The UK and movie promo items are really cool, but I have committed myself to sticking to the US and book promo items only.

I only have a few....

From a Buick 8 Fuzzy Dice
Wizard & Glass Promo Booklet
Lisey's Story Notebook
Black House Postcard

Here is my "want list"
Duma Key Tennis Ball
Hearts in Atlantis Playing Cards

What others have I forgotten that would fall under my criteria of US and book?

Patrick

Jerome, yes, that guitar isn't a promo in the typical "freebie" sense.

John, thanks!

A few others were:
Waldenbooks also issued a set of dog tags for Hearts in Atlantis.
There was a set of magnets that was the first page of Bag of Bones.
The promotional ledger showed the first few hand-written pages of Dreamcatcher.
A CD was issued that had King reading the first chapter of From a Buick 8.
Four different-colored Dreamcatchers were issued for the movie (tan, red, brown and blue).

I have these, and I'm sure there are others out there too.

I have a neat press kit from the Nightmares and Dreamscapes series that comes with a pillow, along with single-episode DVDs of the shows, some of them with incomplete SFX and credits. That'll probably show up on eBay someday soon. I have the Hearts in Atlantis reading guide kit, too, along with the deck of playing cards.

I may have been, but its also probably not worth much. Theres an army surplus store here in London that got about 100 of the ones actually used in the movie, and they were selling them for $15. Find a poster to go with it and you've got a great ebay auction, no?

Who knows. Certainly overpriced. If someone wishes to pay that, good for them, but to me it isn't worth $10.

Seeing all of Ari's posters reminded me of these old gems I've had rolled up in a tube for 15+ years. I don't remember which is which, but I got one pair by asking for them at Waldenbooks right after the book came out (IT, I think). The other pair I got by writing to Viking and asking if they had any SK promo posters they would be willing to part with. They sent me 2 posters.

I was in high school at the time and abused my unfettered access to the school's lamination machine. Probably not such a great idea in retrospect.

:) Thank you very much!!

I always liked a lot the merchandising stuff made of King's books. So I've been always very alert about that stuff. As you mentioned, being in another country makes things a lot more difficult, but with patience, kindness, time and not much money (I never paid a lot for Merchandising stuff) you can have a nice collection. Mine isn't too large and I own only 3 S/L, but I managed to get 11 books signed by King, including one dedicated to me. :)

I'm still looking for Hearts in Atlantis Dog Tags, the on writting pen (Juliana is sending it to me!!! WOOHOO!!!), and the beers (I only have the redrum one).

Well...I'll still have to wait and be patient with those missing :)

I had to go to two stores--each store got three, but all three arrived broken at the first store I went to. The second store had all three. Sir Boomme said the Blockbuster in his area got six. You have to buy the movie to get the globe. I bought the movie, but then discovered that I bought the single-disc version. I'm going back tomorrow to see if I can swap it out for the two-disc edition.

The Blockbuster I was at only had the single-disc edition, and that's all they carried. He said it would be the same for the other stores in the area as they all buy the same stuff. I'm not sure I believe him, but I bought it anyway.

For once, the time delay of being on the West Coast actually helped. Just after 10am, I was only the second customer and the first to buy The Mist. They only had the single disc version - based on comments in this thread, I'm thinking the two-disc set has not yet been released.

Our local store had 4 globes. I bought 3 movies, each with a snowglobe.

Our real camera is not here, so here are lousy cellphone versions:

the movie is the single disc.... that's all blockbuster has for sell. the 2 disc version with the stephen king interview is out.... but it is only available for rental at this time, i'm sure that ove a period of time as the rentals go down, the surplus rental tapes will be offered for sell as "previously previewed" (aka. used) versions

BTW....my opinion... the globes are a bit cheesy. not really worth the 23.00 movie price unless you were going to buy the movie anyways.
after opening the box i was a bit disappointed in the quality....seems they could have found a better artist to do the interior globe "sculpture" and i use that term with reservations. ( i know i could have done a hell of a lot better.)

Actually it'll go with the dvd's, which if anyone remembers my collection I keep the dvd's with my book collection.

Also I'm pretty lax when it comes to my books. Sure I jacket the books, keep them out of sunlight, and take a lot of precautions, but I also read my Limited and Lettered Editions. So I have no problem keeping the globe on a bookshelf, which I mentioned is strongly built. I think it would take someone throwing a baseball at it, to break.

I went out today and got the Mist globe as well. I took a peek and it's a nice little trinket. I actually think it's officially the first promotional item of King's that I own (if you don't count any of the comic book pre-sale stuff).

I'll keep it on my book case, but since RF put the fear of water in my mind, it will go on the lower shelf with my later trade editions of Dolores Claiborne, Geralds Game, etc. Easily replaced. ;)

I only look at the illustrations of the signed and S/L books I have (that aren't many). I DO read the ARCs I receive prior to the book's publication (I've read Lisey's Story, Blaze and Duma Key before it's publication in their ARCs format) but I usually read the paperbacks editions of the books in order to avoid damage to the HCs.

I keep my books in a free smoke room (actually my all apartment is smoke free) and I try to clean them once every two weeks. After I return from USA I'll start saving for a good a big bookcase with glass doors (and key lock) since I want to keep 'em more protected.

Cutter

Even though I'll read the limiteds I won't read the arc's or proofs. A paperback takes too much damage in a reading, imo. I can always wait till it comes out.

I think those were sent out along with ARC copies of the book to selected reviewers/booksellers. When they first came out they were reasonably "hot" on eBay and, if memory serves, sold in the $50-$75 range. Now they are much, much cheaper but I haven't seen one for sale in a long time.

The seller is Grover DeLuca from Atlanta. I've known him for a long time and he tends to be on the high end of most things. Grover used to run the "Collectibles Corner" in the Oxxford Bookstore in Atlanta. It used to be a huge used and new bookstore in Atlanta and I loved going there. I had about lost interest in collecting King (way before the internet, etc.) and I happened in there one day in 1991. Seeing the "Collectibles Corner" rekindled my interest pretty quickly. I miss the Oxxford Bookstore.

Grover knows King collecting pretty well and, I think, still has some good King stuff laying around somewhere.

Just a slight correction--it's the first page of the book, not the first chapter. No biggie, just setting things right.

The Scribner Bag of Bones proof usually goes for between $25 and $50. There is a special edition of about 100 copies, each of which has a note by King (and signed by him) addressed to a number of booksellers on the first page, that goes for about $400-$600. A different version, also called the "Second Draft" manuscript, is a large size volume with a black tape binding. It usually goes for $200-$400.

This one IMHO is really quirky:

This listing is for an authentic piece of Salem's Lot, preserved inside a double pendant. This pendant resembles a pair of vampire fangs, which are made of glass with metal caps. Comes with it's own little certificate of authenticity and a 24" black leather cord to string them on.
The pair of fangs contains actual soil from the grounds of the old Marsten House, which has since long been burned down by Ben Mears. The other fang contains the water from the same church that Ben went to fill his blue bottles with Holy Water for protection against Barlow, the master vampire. The water is of course tinted slightly blue to represent the glowing water that let Ben and Mark know when vampires were near.

I'm doing my periodic (roughly biannual) bookshelf cleaning. It's a big job but it is interesting to see items I have forgotten or not thought of for years.

Here is a copy of PRESUMPSCOT REVIEW, a college publication similar to MOTH, ONAN, etc. but published by students at University of Maine at Portland-Gorham. This is from Spring, 1977. Two college students conduct a lengthy interview with King that is really pretty good and is several pages long.

Other than the August, 1974 issue of CAVALIER, this is the earliest King interview in my collection. Earlier interviews were usually in newspapers like the Bangor or Lewiston daily papers and I have none of them.

Anyone else have this? Or have an earlier published interview?

I would doubt it. You can't really see the signature from the photograph either.

The signature doesn't look right to me either. Of course, signing a three dimensional model isn't like signing a book but still......I vote no.

Besides, having that thing in my house would creep me out. And I don't creep out easily.

Not too bad. The slipcase looks like it is very good condition. That makes it worth it. Most of the sets that I have seen have had some heavy damage to the slipcase.

Does anyone fancy one of the 5,000 (fac simile) UK limited keyrings, during the sales of Duma Key?

Its funny : when it was outta there i did annoy my MrRabbitTrick and mygirlfriend to get one (lol).. and i dont know, this one is absolutely useless for me... i dont see the point of keeping it lol
btw, it would be $25+ shipping (it's so heaaaavy that shipping will be really really expensive!)

and... it's facsimile (cannot do pix just now), and while the sig looks pretty bad, it's not fake :p

I know the signed bookplate from SK in support of Tom Allen was discussed before, but I just wanted to say that I got mine in the mail yesterday.

$150.00 is quite a bit to spend for a signed bookplate but it is still pretty cool. I have all of the postcards and letters that I have received since my donation and the letter that accompanied it and all together I think they make a pretty good collectible.

I can scan the bookplate and post pics if anyone would like to see it.

I got mine as well the day before yesterday. I have a pic, but since you posted first, the pic honors are yours! I'd say yes, post the pics. People are always interested. BTW, it is a REAL sig on the bookplate, not a facsilime, in case you all were wondering.

While I too believe the bookplate is not worth anything close to $150, I am still happy I did it. That's all that matters as we collectors can attest.

I agree. Posting a picture involves several steps. That is one of the things I really miss about thedarktower.net. It was so easy to post pictures on that site.

It is a bit more cumbersome, but other aspects of the site and it's software more than make up for that little trouble.
