Nice. I have never seen that.

I've had it kicking around in my book closet for ages. Finally decided it was just taking up space and maybe someone else would enjoy it. The playing cards are still wrapped, and the box was shipped to me straight from Scribner, according to the shipping label on the other side. I must have won it in a contest or something. I honestly don't recall!

Hi Bev, If I was to bid and win, would you consider shipping to the UK?
Jon

I'd consider it -- but it wouldn't be cheap. A quick estimate is $25 for shipping.

STEPHEN KING'S THE STAND MOVIE ORIGINAL PROMO PACKAGE- RARE

This is an original promotional package for Stephen King's The Stand Movie, circa 1995. This package was sent to movie rental stores as a promo for the sell through rental of the mini-series movie. The package is huge (see pics) and contains videos, literature, and a giant 3 foot by 4 foot poster. It contains 4 vhs videos. PLEASE NOTE: these are not of the actual movie, but are the making and marketing of the series.

Yes. But unless you buy them in bulk, in advance they can run you $3- each at the local office supply. She just needs to make sure the buyers (myself included) pay that cost.

I believe they were once given away to subscribing members of the 'Stephen King Library' club. Not sure they were specifically made for that though and you can probably pick up replicas. I have seen variations with red eyes and chrome versions too.

I have one of these dangling from a little drawer on my rolltop desk, staring at me even as I type. They did come from the SK Library or some such book club. By itself, there's no way to make the King connection -- it is unlabeled.

I'd also like to give a huge thank you to Niels and Dez for their efforts acquiring and distributing the umbrellas.

Mine arrived safely yesterday, thanks to the layers of bubble wrap and newspaper padding. Without the extra care Dez put into the packing, I think I would have ended up with a 2-piece umbrella, because the box arrived looking like someone ran over it with the mail truck before loading it on for delivery.

Phew! I'm glad it arrived safely. I don't trust USPS at all. I was worried that they would get damaged after having come so far, so I erred on the side of lots of padding!!

I now have a connection with non-sports card distributors and might be able to get them for you at cost or at least a reduced rate. Not sure if anyone here collects cards specifically, or simply just if the deal is right, but figured I'd toss that out there with the Under The Dome sets mentioned.

...Right! (rolls up his sleeves and throws down the Gauntlet…)

I don’t want to seem off-hand about this, bite the hand that feeds me or even point any fingers, but it’s now all hands on deck. Now, normally I’m a dab hand at these kind of puns and don’t mind getting my hands dirty, however the recent puns from other members has forced me to give a guiding hand.

It seems to me, the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing so I’d like to lend a hand and though I don’t want to be left with blood on my hands, it seems I am going to have to be heavy handed over this. I don’t want to over play my hand, but on the other hand i do know this game like the back of my hand and am going to take the law into my own hands.

As we know, the Devil makes work for idle hands and it’s better to have your hands full and have a hands on attitude. Be assured you are in safe hands. (please raise your hand if you need to interrupt me)

Having now gained the upper hand, I’d like to hand off to the next person. Let’s have a show of hands who thinks this nonsense should stop.

Hi Everyone!

Your Caretaker from Betts here. I know I hardly get over here any more and for that I say sorry wholeheartedly.

Maybe (hopefully NOT) this new thread is found already here but I did not see such so I decided to start a new thread. This thread is meant to showcase for all collectors, big and small, some of the more rare, or even one-of-a-kind items in the King collecting world.

I am fortunate enough to have been seriously collecting King for 20 years now, maybe more, and have been Caretaker at Betts for 5+ years (really? YES!). Over the years, I have been able to acquire some truly rare collectibles and I wanted have a thread that showcases stuff that you just never see. I have a fairly long list of items that I think are super rare, maybe even unparalleled in the King collectors market, but my time is short so maybe I will just kick off with three items.

#1 Orange Gunslinger Proof - SIGNED - as far as I know this is the only signed copy in the world. This is the Plume Proof of the Gunslinger. I do not think anyone knows for sure how many copies of the Orange proof exist but I think it is 10 or fewer. I know one proof collector who has been looking for one for at least 10 years!

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Orange_Gunslinger5.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Orange_Gunslinger_12.jpg

#2 Earliest signed copy of Salem's Lot 1st edition known. Salem's Lot was published on October 19, 1975. I acquired a copy a year ago that I believe to be the earliest signed copy ever. This copy is inscribed to Flip and Karen....Flip was King's roomie in college and this book is dated October 3, 1975, fully 2 weeks before publication. It is the only pre-publication signed copy I've ever seen.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Salem2.jpg

#3 Original Salem's Lot complete package that was owned by publisher Jerad Walters. I acquired this package roughly one year ago and this is truly a one-of-a-kind item! It includes a Lettered Salem's Lot in traycase (no letter, just a blank space), a full set of the individual illustrations; ALL the original correspondence between Jerad, his lawyer and King's lawyer getting permission to publish the book etc.; a hand written letter from Stephen King to Jerad praising Jerad for the book; a slipcased edition of Stephen King Interviews (I am told only 10 were made); and finally...this has NEVER been seen before....the hardcover pitchbook that Jerad and photographer J.K. Potter put together to try to sell King on letting them do a Shining signed limited edition. There were 4 pitchbooks created...one for Jerad, one for Potter, one for King's lawyer and one for King himself. This obviously was Jerad's copy and this package is the COMPLETE Salem's Lot, only one of its kind.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Salem3.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Salem4.jpg

Sample of original correspondence (numerous pieces):

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Salem9a.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Salem9b.jpg

I have more items that I hope to show later such as:

**a Lettered 999 copy SIGNED by Stephen King. This was his anesthesiologist's copy after King's accident, this guy got King to sign his lettered copy...only one signed as far as I know.

**I own UK Prime Evil #1...this was Tom Canty's copy...he designed the book and traycase.

** Dark Tower VII UK Proof...SIGNED, only one in world signed I believe...these proofs are exceedingly rare unsigned.

**Viking Gunslinger Proof SIGNED.....again unsigned proof is exceedingly rare.

** I own a UK Stand 1st edition inscribed to an employee of the publisher at the party held on the night of publication in the UK.

Looking forward to seeing other collectors' rarities....this thread will likely be OWNED by carlosdetweiller!!

Thanks for starting a thread that will make many of us jealous!! I think it's a great idea David... Over the past 12 months or so, as I've been reading old forum posts that were published before I joined, I've bookmarked so many "one-of-a-kind" or very rare items. Most were from Bob of course, but I know there's other members who have very rare items.

So hopefully those folks will share some pictures..there's a bunch of unique items out there from what I've seen in past threads.

Nice work!!

Great items, David! Wow, that handwritten letter to Jerad Walters praising the job he did on the limited edition of 'Salem's Lot is really something. King seems really two-faced about this. Praising the heck out of Jerad's work in the personal letter and then totally dissing both Jerad and the book in later interviews. Leaves me scratching my head over this and angrier than ever over the way King later criticized Jerad in such a mean-spirited way.

I thought the same thing... Was always under the assumption that King hated that book...

Bob do you think it was a case of him genuinely feeling the way he did in that letter, but then as time went by, his philosophy or opinion about this sort of thing somehow shifted... or something happened to change his mind.. I'd imagine there was a number of years between when he wrote that letter of praise, and when he said what he said in interviews...

We all know how snarky SK can be - I think the controversey about the "Salem's Lot" book was just a case of an interview question and him having that book in his head so he used it as an example...I don't think it was his real feeling - I think the letter was - but he wanted to make a point and used the easiest memory as his go-to.

As for items - I have a looseleaf set of publisher's proofs of DTVII authenticated by Robert at Grant.

It predates the printed book by about four months, and is the earliest possible copy - it's literally a pile of printed pages, not a book.

And - randomly, I have a book "Modern Masters of Horror," which contains "The Monkey." It was signed in 1983, and I have to think it's almost unique because it's such a random, long out-of-print anthology for somebody to have gotten signed.

I going to low ball an offer in an attempt to get a "5 finger" discount.

I suspect the seller is looking for a more handsome offer...

I've gotta give you a hand on that post!!! Awesome!! LOL

Gerald's signed Carrie proof definitely belongs in this thread! Which reminds me - the signed/inscribed Carrie ARC that sold through Heritage Auctions some time ago - the inscription said it was the first book he ever signed. Was it dated before Gerald's proof?

*edit: I took the liberty of copying Gerald's pic of the Carrie proof that he recently posted in the proof thread and I added a pic of the inscription in the Carrie ARC I was referring to:

http://geraldwinters.com/king/doubleday/carrie_proof.jpg
http://geraldwinters.com/king/doubleday/carrie_proof_sign.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/custom/images/1423824951-SK.jpg

So it looks like the inscription to Flip and Karen wasn't the first after all. But this one and Gerald's are probably the first two (and maybe one that was signed to King's mother, as the story goes).

As some of you know.. my two King passions are IT and The Dark Tower. I love the art side of it and after half a year of searching and then begging (lol) I had the original artist who did the cover of the 1st of IT (which is the best King cover IMO) do me this wonderful piece of art. He is 88 years old and still has what it takes. According to Bob, it is the only time he has ever did this (he had no idea what a remarque was and after weeks of back and forth trying to educate him what it was... he said he would do the art and I could fold it up and stick it in the book as he would not deface the good... god love the guy, it was NOT going to be folded and put in my 25th anniversary book. The art itself is 11x14... there was no question that a pro was going to frame it!!!) and the original was long gone decades ago as it really had no value to anyone! I dealt with his daughter for most of the process as he can barely hear. A wonderful man in every sense of the word to do this for me. I display it proudly on my wall:) Here is what I believe the only original done for the cover IT to be in existence!

Great stuff David. I think Hutch has (or had) a 'Salem's Lot signed & dated October 17, 1975 so yours is likely the earliest.
The items from Jared are awesome. I wonder if at some point he will regret letting go of the SK correspondence and Shining presentation book. Possibly King's comments on the SL deluxe along with the rejection of The Shining left a bitter enough residue that Jared wanted to clean house, so to speak.

You have a wonderful piece of art signed by the gentleman who created it. After all of the time and effort you, the artist and his daughter invested in making it happen why would you want to alter his original painting for an adjunct signature?
This isn't meant as a criticism or judgment, just curious.

The more I look at it, the more it looks either legit, or a great self made item. Dot matrix printing. If you were going to create one, why not create 6 tapes (as the Gunslinger audio was done)?

Well, we shall see. I threw a tenner on it. Just for the funky Grant poster in fact.

I've got the "3 bullet prototype." Pretty sure there is only one of those. Do you know of other prototypes of the lettered edition?

Bob owns a 3 bullet prototype Lettered. I wasn't aware there might be another lettered PT out there.

I have The Regulators S/L #133 that was signed as Stephen King and not Richard Bachman. I am not sure if this was by accident or deliberate. I also have checks #1, 2, and #3 that were also signed as Stephen King. These are not included in the books, which I am assuming were redone as Richard Bachman. I don't know who has these copies to confirm.

Interesting. The info I have lists (I presume these were/are in books) #1 as to Henry Blake for $5.00, with Memo-Bucket.
#2 to Chris Hargenson for $20.00 with Memo-Prom Tickets.
#3 to Josie & the Moonglows for $125.00 with Memo-Band Fee

Yes that is the same names, amounts and memos as mine. I would love to see the corrected checks someday.

Did you get #133 as a fluke or did you know that it also was miss signed & did you get the checks & #133 at the same time?

Hi,
I knew the Regulators was signed as SK, and it was a premium price. I purchased them both from Stu Tinker in Bangor, but at different times. The information I got from Stu was that there was one Numbered and one Lettered signed as Stephen King.

I also have the original UPS shipping box and receipt from Charnel House (I purchased it from the original owner) and there is no indication on the paperwork to signify the signature. It was the same issue price. Stu's belief was that Stephen made one check for each edition and they were sent randomly to people that ordered the book in 1996. It was a bonus for the recipient.

Man, I SAW those checks 1,2,3 at the store when I bought everything from Stu. I wanted those checks but he told me emphatically they were NOT ever for sale....Neo, I am truly happy they landed in your collection which continues to amaze me.

Bob, I may be wrong on a second Lettered prototype...I only remember that a fellow CT collector owned the Lettered at one time....a guy with a French last name (started with a C...Caruau, something...he ran a rock climbing gym, met him a couple times)...Anyway HE told me there were 2 Lettered prototypes, whether that was truthful or not, I do not know.

I think that the artist has a fair amount of talent. Sort of in the R. J. Krupowicz style. Having said that I don't picture Walter with styled and combed hair. Looks more like one of Anne Rice's vampires (Lestat, maybe?)

Moth....a collection of poems from King's days at University of Maine is somewhat of a rare item, but I own a copy signed by Michael Alpert (at his poem), King signed three times...each at his entries...and King's wife Tabitha at her submission. I am an absolute fiend/whore (to be crude) of remarques....I am so lucky to have Michael Whelan as a friend and neighbor....when Dark Tower VII was published, Michael did approximately 30 remarques in books and sold them from his website (in my view, Michael started, or restarted, the whole craze of remarqued books within the King collecting community). At one time I owned 11 of those 30, but this Remarque below is the finest example of the 30 (in my own opinion) and is the ONLY one he did in a S/L version of the DT VII book. It is one of my favorite Dark Tower pieces in my collection.

I am considering these next 3 items as on of a kind.....the first is Michael Whelan's updated Father Callahan image using me as his model (I posed in Michael's studio in April 2009). This image is used in Stephen King's website game "Discordia." Second image is me as Father Callahan, art done by Ned Dameron and third image is Father Callahan (me again) done by Glenn Chadbourne.

Well, artwork mostly is one of a kind and I won't/can't post all the Dark Tower/King original artwork I own...Bob has me beat anyway by a LONG LONG shot...but this little piece is one of my favorites and it took Ned Dameron a long time to find it for me....it is one of the prelim sketches he did of Roland kneeling before Auntie Talitha at River Crossing in the Waste Lands...for me it is one of the most touching scenes in the Dark Tower story.

Last item for now...pretty rare set....a set of The Plant S/L all inscribed to Stephen King's nanny. This set was originally first owned by the first King supercollector Charlie Freid. I have an old letter from Stu at Betts addressed to Charlie detailing the origins of this set.

Oh crap, I just realized I don't have pics saved og each inscription to nanny Chris Mogan...but here is the letter to Charlie that is part of my set.

While I was on the hunt for a party signed copy of TGWLTG I ran across a listing for a copy of it that states from the Collection of Stanley Wiater with his bookplate.
Was his bookplate also affixed to your copy or copies?
FYI This dealer is asking $1,250 for the TGWLTG book alone.

Bruce-

I admit to owning another person's Tom Gordon.....I bought all other Wiater items from Ken Lopez bookseller as a package but could not bring myself to pay the $1250 for the Tom Gordon with bookplate which was the only item listed separately (why I do not fathom), so I left it there as I already had the Gordon from a partial party set already.
