Alright everyone, time for another movie competition! This time we're going to be voting for the best horror film.

The rules are pretty simple:

*There will be a total of 128 nominations
*You may nominate one film per post
*Please wait until 3 other people have cast a nomination before nominating another

Also, please be sure to number your nomination so it's easier to sort once the list has been compiled. Once all 128 nominees have been named we'll randomly place them into groups, and voting will begin.

I have a question. What are we considering films like Alien? It's considered horror by most, but I've always looked at it as more of a sci-fi film. Obviously, it's both. It certainly hits most of the check boxes for a horror film and is much more horror than the rest of the films in the franchise.

fernandito
03-26-2014, 03:12 PM
That's a good question. I'm sure there we'll come across several examples as we chug along where a film can be classified as more than one genre. Let's just use our best judgement. In this specific example, Alien checks off all the right boxes so I don't see any harm in including it.

Alien follows the formula of a monster movie thus, horror. Aliens folows the formula of an action movie thus, not horror.

Personally I don't consider movies that have zero supernatual quality to actually be horrors. Any movie that is about psychos or anything like that I don't include as horror but that's just me, I don't consider say Saw to be horror.

Does a 3 part T.V. mini-series count?

I wasn't sure, but I enjoyed this version so much more than the Kubrick and No. 1 choice listed here that I thought it might get some debate. The TV version was produced by King and remains faithful to the book. Also, the casting is much better than the Kubrick version with the exception of, Jack. I also felt it was scarier, but I'll go with the majority here in whichever way they feel as far as the nominations go.

Oh, by all means leave "The Haunting" despite my error. I can never forget those bulging doors!!! That is not it though, Bruce. I think they did a remake in the last 5-10 years, but the original was much better. Damn, my memory!!! Sorry for the hassle, Bruce. The movie also featured a well known weasel (for the time) as the ring master for the rich playboy (Price).

Yes, what? Is it "supernatural" or not? As I recall it was a "crazy" flick.

You must not recall the ending. He really was the god's hands killer and the people really were demons. God and demons and visions of angels is supernatural, no? You could argue it's more drama than horror but so are most of the best horror films.

I don't consider any of these horrors. Slashers and psychological thrillers as they play on the ideas that these things could actually happen to you, as opposed to Freddy Kruger killing you in your dreams. And what source material were they both based from? Texas Chainsaw Massacre was based off Ed Gein, was it not?

I take a day off you you guys destroy all the nomination spots lol, I better get two of these last five! And what's a comedy like Evil Dead 2 doing on the list?

I want to nominate [Rec]3 but I know it won't advance and no one has seen Beneath (which is a low down, dirty shame) so I want to nominate something that can possibly actually get some votes....I want to nominate Let Me In because it's one of the best horrors in years but the original was already nominated......this is tough. Screw it, I'm going for a childhood favourite which may get no votes because I rarely hear anyone mention it, but I think it's one of the most expertly crafted monster films ever made (and it's a Del Toro, which I didn't know until recently actually)

I'd call Six Sense a horror, it's just not a horror in typical ways. There are definitely some creepy sequences in it, such as when he's locked in that little cupboard etc. It's more drama than horror story wise but the atmosphere (which is most of what makes a horror a horror) is very creepy in numerous parts.

I can't remember if I downloaded Repulsion to watch when I downloaded dozens of horror films to watch. I almost wish I'd have watched The Innocents (1961 I believe) which is based of Turn of the Screw as from all account that I read it's one of the most beautifully filmed horror movies ever, and since Turn of the Screw is creepier to me than almost anything King wrote I am sure it's a quality film.

Rotten Tomatoes did a list a few years ago and listed Jaws as the #10 best Horror film of all time. #2 on their list is a film that didn't make our tourney and one that I never thought of as a horror film and that is King Kong. Then I started thinking about it and realized that King Kong has a lot of horror ingredients in it.

Also, my parents tell me that people wouldn't even go in the ocean after Jaws came out. They were on their Honeymoon in Hawaii and they said people were really afraid to go in the ocean because the move had released that weekend.

Yeah, showing my age, but I was there for the Phenomenon as well and while it was "Horrific" it was not a traditional "Horror" film, IMHO A horror film must include an element of the supernatural to me. While it may be argued that it was hinted at in "Jaws" I don't feel it qualifies. Of course, JMHO.

Vampyr and Eyes Without A Face are on my horrors to watch list. I say Evil Dead 2 should be off the list since it's basically a comedic remake of the first one which is also nominated. I loved Cabin in the Woods but it's more a study on horror films than a horror film but I surely wouldn't disagree with it being in there.

I would really like to see The Last Exorcism be able to get involved, that or something like In The Mouth of Madness or [REC] (i'm in the minority who actually preferred Quarantine over [Rec] but I loved [Rec]2 and [rec]3 so I'd be okay with that franchise getting some recognition. And on topic but off topic, Quarantine 2 is surprisingly awesome, I've watched it a few times. And we should extend the nominations and throw in a few wild cards or something lol, but then again I'm not organising this. Even if a few more were added you could just eliminate that many in the first round to even it out, non? Wouldn't need to change the number advancing each round, just more films would be eliminated in the first round, kind of a round robin. We could squeeze in 24 more nominations this way and it wouldn't disrupt the later rounds. Would be a bloody first round with 24 more corpses for the champion to stand triumpantly over, with his chainsaw hand reving and his boomstick smoking.

Sounds good.

And I spoke with Feev, and if you guys want, we'll open it up to more nominations. We're just trying to figure out bracket wise how many more. I'm thinking maybe we'll just go to an even 100. So continue on with the nominations :D

I nominate we swap From Dusk til Dawn, for The Shining (TV version). Also "Jaws" is not a horror movie in any way. It's a modern day "Moby Dick". I say we go with Bram Stoker' Dracula instead Just some thoughts. Any one agree?

Jaws is a monster movie, that did for going to the beach what Psycho did for going to the shower! Yes there is the adventure story as well. Rob Zombie said it made he afraid to go near water, including using the toilet for a while.

Thank you I was thinking the same thing! The project was originally going to be a remake of the original Mummy with a script by Clive Barker, I don't recall if he was going to direct, that would have been horror. I like the Brendan Fraser mummy films but I have always considered them action adventure films, I literally always considered them the poor mans Indiana Jones. but I am not going to argue their nomination to the list. But Jaws and The Silence Of The Lambs may not have supernatural elements but I have more of an argument for those films than the action adventure mummy films.

That is not fair. The Mummy is a supernatural entity even though the films are kinda "action/adventure". "Jaws" is a fish. Wholly natural.

Movies that feature real animals I would still make a case for being horror provided they follow along the lines of a monster movie; Jaws, The Ghost In The Darkness, Lake Placid, Arachnophobia, Cujo and Anaconda are all examples of this and are all monster movies in my opinion. I hate subgenres but I'm pretty particular on horror sub-genres since there are so many that follow specific lines of horror.

I'm assuming I Spit on Your Grave is the original version, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Same goes for The Vanishing?

Also, if we nominate 128 films, I can use this website to insert all the films and hopefully update them. It would be pretty cool. Of course, we'd have to do movie vs. movie matchups like the NCAA tournament. Not multiple films against each other at once. That could take a lot longer.

That's pretty neat. Too bad you can't alter it to include more. My plan was to do larger brackets, or it's going to take forever. I have an excel spreadsheet going now, and I was going to put them into a randomizer, and create the brackets that way. I'm hoping to get the first polls up later today.
