I am presenting this collection on behalf of a UK collector who wishes to remain anonymous. He is not a member of this site although does visit on occasion. He may also have bought specific items from some of you in the past, so if you recognise anything, I would appreciate if you would keep his details private.

I had great pleasure in meeting him after agreeing the purchase of a set of books from me. We discussed the books at length and when I discovered he was not too far from my own location offered to deliver them personally rather than risk any damage in the post. He was delighted and offered to show me his library...

... This caught my attention. Anyone with a library rather than a 'bookcase' has got to have some interesting items right? This turned out to be the understatement of the year.
I knew this was going to be something special on arrival at the house. I wont give details on location, but if I tell you the gardens are often open to the public, you may get some sense of the scale....

after pleasantries and a cup of tea, the transaction was completed and I was shown to the Library. I was then shown limited after limited after limited. He has only been collecting for 2 years but he has amassed an amazing set of books in such a short period of time. I could go on but he very generously allowed me to take some photos and was happy for me to show them here. I will post these shortly and give some commentary on what was shown to me.

His collection has come from a number of sources but one in particular he wanted to mention and publicly thank for the level of service he has received. Emmanuel Manetakis, proprietor of VeryFineBooks.com has been instrumental in helping him build this collection, often searching for and pre-checking various volumes and editions before they are offered for sale to him. As you will see in the following photos, this collector is extremely fastidious with regard to condition of the books he buys. Only the cleanest fine copies make it into his collection. Emmanuel has consistently provided him with quality items and (for him at least) at a price commensurate with the service he requires.

So onto the pictures. This will bear repeating (and I will :) as I go along) but practically everything you see is signed. This has to be one of the most extensive collections of Stephen King signatures out there.

lets start with some proofs and arcs and the first of many DT books.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/922/medium/9978A4FD-60F4-4E61-833E-9D41DA777AD5_zpsja6cip1j.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/922/medium/03188214-2504-4173-8F6F-C5CBD6391CDF_zps4yvxkgl0.jpg

Of note is the DT VII arc - I was informed (i'm not a collector of arcs/proofs, so can't comment) that this is pretty difficult to find. I *think* these are all signed as well, I will need to confirm on these volumes.

The DT's are all signed numbered (i didn't get the #'s - I will ask him if he is willing to divulge that for the records). Note 2 full sets I-VII, both mint. He also has spare copies of the 1st/1st cover as well

Edit: LSOE's and WTTKH are on other shelves - I do not know if the numbers match.

A few signed limited's:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/922/medium/8B41BD6C-4C12-4A8F-8BB4-A539FBE09455_zpspyowwq99.jpg

Again even the gift SOD's and IT are flatsigned. The small book sticking out is the signed limited Dark Man

quick flip to the other side of the room (2 of the walls are fully shelved floor to ceiling)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/922/medium/EDACAB03-5BB9-41CB-8BDD-F3E43D3D3CCD_zpsiujmxtsx.jpg

More Trades, all mint, all signed... The book laying down bottom right is a tray cased copy of the trade edition of IT. This looks like it has just been printed (and of course its flatsigned). Condition has to be seen to be believed.

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot the Coffin case version of The Stand right next to it  (apologies for the quality of the picture - I was using my iPhone and the room was kept intentionally low lit) This is a valuable and well looked after item so many of you will have seen it in Mint/Fine condition, but this was the first time I had actually seen one 'for real'. I think I mentioned being added to his will at this point.... (purely too look after this book you understand....)

Next up are some Trade editions. Again everything (bar one book - The Tommy Knockers, which I am told has a replacement signed copy on its way) is flat signed, many with dedications.

More signed limiteds - notably Cujo, Christine, a full set of the same numbered Colorado Kid (I think it is #14) and Danse Macarbre. A signed limited of Blockade Billy I have never seen before. Again what is notable is the exceptional condition of these books.

Oh and I'm sure that case holds some interest for the George R R Martin collectors amongst you :)

That's all the photos I have, but needless to say I was shown much more. The sharp eyed amongst you will notice the considerable collections of other authors as well as King, all in similar condition. I was shown an extensive collection of books by Hakuri Murakimi (whom I confess was unknown to me) in particular a lettered edition of Sleep which was just beautiful.

For those of you with large chequebooks that are considering making offers, I'm afraid to say, nothing is for sale. He is not interested in selling for profit and the quality of books he has means there is no need for 'upgrades'. He occasionally does give books as gifts, which leads me to the best part of the day. "

I was just about to leave when he said "do you have a copy of the UK edition of Thinner?"
I said "yes" (as I do)
"The one with the band?"
"er, no, that's a bit rare".
"hang on"

2 mins later he returns and hands me a mint copy of the book - "this is for you, thanks for the appreciation"

That's all for now, I'll keep in touch and hopefully add to this thread as he makes new acquisitions. Anonymous is a great guy, a nicer more generous person would be hard to find. What's surprising is the small amount of contact with other collectors he has had. He really had no idea of how his collection matched up to others, hopefully he will see some good feedback on this. :)

Oh and although he wishes to remain anonymous here, he asked me to pass on an open invite to see his collection in person and to chat over a cup of tea. Please PM me if you are in the UK Midlands area.

I have an update on TDT S/L #'s. The two sets are NOT all the same number. Set 1 is made up of 2 numbers and set 2 is made up of 3. I cannot divulge what those numbers are I am afraid as he does not want to be bombarded by requests. I appreciate that may be a blow to some of you that are searching for a specific number, but I have to honour his wishes.

If you are searching for a specific # please PM ME with what the # is. I will collect these and at a later date pass them all on to him. In this way i can at least verify he doesn't have your number. (what happens if he does is another matter and we can deal with that at that point).

I don't really expect that he has it but I've been on the lookout for DT2 #644 for many years. I also need A Storm of Swords #320. I have #53 to trade if I ever come across my number.

Been a while since I updated this thread, but a few of you may know that I have been trying to locate some copies of the Plant for Anonymouus's collection. Well it seems he has done quite well without me and just procured the following set. All 3 are part of the 200 s/l copies and although the numbers do not match, they are all from the same recipient, Christine Morgan who some of you will know was employed as SK's childrens nanny.

Beautiful condition minor flaws only on Part 1, with wonderful dedications and contained in a custom slipcase:

Simon posted some of my collection about a year ago. I sent him some images of three interesting purchases that I had made and he added those to the site.
So the books you see are mine.

It's a clever trick, it is truly an art, to maintain the sensation that life is extraordinary and inexplicable, without a desire to hunt it down for truths, all of which will pass. And the feeling of enrichment, of feeling significant to oneself, without being too much of a public nuisance, is, I think, one of the profoundest tricks to learn in this extraordinary business of living.

Robert O. Lenkiewicz 1996.

A fascinating artist who painted to further his book collection, one of the largest in Europe of its kind. Have a browse and see what you think of him and his concern for addicts and the 'human condition'. You should find some pictures of his library and what one collector can achieve in a short life.
Maybe a little away from the usual thread, however we are all collectors.

Thank you, Alec. My copy of Christine is pretty nice but it's probably the only book I own that lives up to your standards! Nevertheless, I'm happy with what I've been able to collect over the years (and with the fact that 99% of what I purchased survived the trip across the ocean in good condition at all).

All the Stephen King trade US firsts are signed as are a most of the UK firsts.
The Haruki Murakami lettered of Sleep (D) interests me as I have never seen another.
The artist Lenkiewicz is worth a moment of your time and Simon has kindly put a couple of links in, however if you just follow his name you should eventually end up seeing his book collection. That really is worth a look!!
Once again many thanks to Simon and to everybody that contributes to make this site such a delight.

Hi Kris.
Thank you for the kind words and rest assured there will be more posts.
Simon is posting a comprehensive look at my King collection around the middle of August. Until he suggested this site only friends and visitors (who were interested) had seen them. I have been collecting books for 5 years and Stephen King for 3 of those. I wish that I had concentrated purely on King from the outset, sadly I spread myself too thin and ended up amassing books that were going nowhere! Not all of them as you can see but a large percentage. Now it is only King coupled with the odd book that I feel I cannot miss. Rather like Silence of the Lambs (Lettered) which is probably one of the best books Subterranean have produced. So there it is, a brief history of how I have ended up addicted to collecting one of the most iconic living writers.
Have a good day Kris.
Alec.

Hi John.
My first purchases were from Very Fine Books and Preferred Books at the start of 2012. From there it has been an addiction rush, not an uncommon part of my life!! My first large purchase was Salem's Lot (Centipede Press) and then on and on. One of my first Stephen King contacts over here in the UK was a gentleman who went under the name of Calla Wolf, I have never met him but apparently he exposed a lot of the false autographs that were and still are flying about.
The wonderful thing is I have loved every minute and met some fantastic people.
Long may it continue.

Ceri Vale (Calla Wolf) used to post on the previous site before it moved to its current location. I haven't seen him around in a while. I helped him as one of his "panel of experts" on evaluating suspect King signatures a few years ago. There were five of us (including Ceri). If you see him tell him to drop by this site and post more often. And a warm welcome to you, Alec. Hope you stick around.

Good afternoon Carlos.
Very kind of you.

I still speak to Ceri from time to time, though as you probably know he sold a lot of his collection and now pursues his love of photography down in South Wales.
The one large purchase I made from him was his lettered copy of 'It'. A really good sort to deal with.

Alec, one question if I may. Your library looks very neat and ordered (something most of us aspire to, I think - book collectors seem to be prone to a touch of OCD) but I did not yet figure out if there's a system in how the books are shelved (other than grouped by author). Is there a system? I'm not being critical, merely curious.

The first time I came across Ceri was when I received a DTVII S/L from Roy at Bad Man Books and then received another copy two days later. I had only ordered one. On closer inspection, the box was addressed to Ceri but the custom labels were mixed up by the post office and had my address on them and I received both copies. Me, thinking I'm an honest guy, contacted Roy and then forwarded it onto Ceri. I suppose some people would have kept both books and sold one copy.

Hi Manni.
Good question.
The only system I have is (that as near as I can) every shelf is devoted to an author, especially with the King books. The other which determines if a book goes on a certain shelf is the tension across the shelf, which as you know should be supportive without being over tight. One day I will take all the King books into one area, one day.
Does this prove that I am not an OCD sufferer?
When Simon posts the other images of the library it will probably become more apparent what a mess I am in!!
Thanks for asking.
Alec.

Alec

Hi John.
I'm sure Ceri was delighted to see his copy arrive. Though I am sure you have found the same as me, that book collectors are a special type of person. Let's put it this way, if all the world were collectors there would be very little need for police.

Yes I will do my best to stick around, finding it very enlightening and everybody so friendly. A wonderful site.
Roughly 3 years, yes, I started collecting King at the beginning of 2012. Though a lot of the collection has been sourced for me from the U.S. by Emmanuel at Very Fine Books and a wonderful job he has done for me.

You are right about Joe Abercrombie, I could just keep reading him, not so impressed with the latest trilogy though, prefer his first six volumes.
Really like the description 'mildly disturbing', perhaps an under statement. Try looking at:

That is disturbing in a different way!!!

Alec
01-28-2016, 06:52 AM
Good morning Webstar.
The art I collect is not King related, though I can fully understand the attraction.
I have quite a mix, including Todd White, Robert Lenkiewicz, L. S. Lowry and one Warhol.
If you are interested in art take a look at a website by Geoffrey Dashwood, all sculpture and predominantly life size birds with some monumental pieces. I have collected some of his work. Certainly worth a look.
Hope you enjoy it.

Good evening Randall Flagg,
Thank you for your interest. It is a matter of integrity on this issue. Please do not think I am being obstructive, however the book was intended for Stephen King (as were a few of them) and I am unsure as to the reason the list was left in the case. If it was for the sole benefit of Mr. King then it does not seem ethical to divulge that information. The only person who could clear the matter is Peter Bernstein. I am all for the sharing of information, though in this instance I would feel happier with clearance. The book also came with the three different title plates.
I sincerely hope my sentiments do not offend.
Kindest regards
Alec.

Simon is joining me for an afternoon at the end of this month to photograph some more books, which again will be posted. Personally I am delighted with the new items, especially to have found them all in such fine condition. You will always know where one of the first state Salem's Lot is located, exactly where you have just seen it. That is one book that will never be going anywhere else.
The tray cases were commissioned for me by Emmanuel at Very Fine Books, the manufacturers I do not know.
Many thanks again for your comments, much appreciated.
Kindest regards
Alec.

As Alec has mentioned, he is also a collector of art and since my last visit he purchased a new Bronze statue of a Harris Hawk by the sculptor Geoffrey Dashwood. Here are a couple of photos that I forgot to post previously.

It's a striking piece and one I am looking forward to seeing close up.

This should give some idea of scale...

And finally, a very atmospheric photo (taken by another 3rd party) both Alec and I agree, it would make a great book cover!

I cannot argue with the fact that collecting or making a collection is exciting. It is worth mentioning that the thrill of searching and adding to your collection does come in cycles, or peaks and troughs. When you start the process it seems rather daunting, then a little further along the path it appears to take shape and that is when the biggest thrill kicks in, the middle ground where you really feel things are coming together and there are many acquisitions to be made, the collection you wanted is taking shape. From then on the excitement remains though the finds become less frequent and thereby fewer highs to experience. That is when you can take pleasure in the items other people have managed to find and put together.
In other words it's a bit like being in a relationship!

As previously mentioned Jon P and myself visited Alec to experience his collection first hand. This was my second visit and I made sure I took a decent camera with me to take some better photo's than previously. Alec is an extremely welcoming and convivial host and it is always a pleasure to update his thread with new items in his collection. Some of these you have seen before, others are very recent, all are wonderful.

The lettered editions of Joe Abercrombie, The First Law series are a testament to how much I enjoyed reading his work, a real breath of fresh air.
Scott Lynch intrigued me with his first book, however the others did not seem to match up, nonetheless I completed the collection.
The one author that seems to stand head and shoulders above others for me is Robert McCammon. I first read Speaks the Nightbird and have enjoyed everyone of his books. I would recommend anyone who has not read him to certainly entertain the idea. I believe there are only six of his books left for me to read and it will be a sad day when they are completed.

I have a few other purchases to post in the near future, one of them a Lettered Legends. Delighted to acquire one as they do not seem to appear that often.
Kindest regards

Good afternoon Theli.
You will certainly get immersed in Scott Lynch especially the first book, The Lies of Locke Lamorra. However why not try the author I recommended, Robert McCammon. I have nearly finished 'Mystery Walk', you will not be disappointed, he is adept at turning the improbable into the believable.

Hi Alec,
You've got an amazing collection! Thanks very much for letting us all see it! Can I ask which is your favourite book (disregarding price) and why?

Alec
10-06-2016, 09:36 PM
Good morning Nyles.
My favourite book is a copy of The Stand (First Edition). It cost $350 quite a few years ago and it was purchased with the intention of reading it, not to collect. I wanted to read one of the finest stories in its original print. Deciding against this course of action I indulged myself with a red library copy.
Without intent I had started a collection.
Kindest regards

Congratulations on your beautiful new books, Alec. Does the Fifty-to-one contain excerpts of stories by Hard Case? I'm not too familiar with its contents.

Actually I think it is a novel by Charles Ardai that utilizes as chapter titles the titles of the first 50 books published by Hard Case Crime. I don't think there is any writing by King or anyone else other than Ardai.

Alec, I've just been spending another 20 minutes perusing this amazing collection - you must have one of the largest King collections in the UK, and yet only collecting for 3 years! Can I ask, have you been a King reader / fan for years and that directed you into collecting him, or did the appreciation come concurrently with collecting these collectible editions? Also, is there anything that you are especially after which you don't have as yet? Any "holy grail" you've not crossed paths with? Only if you feel comfortable to share it, of course. I always wonder what the canon collectors who have seemingly everything, have left to seek out.

Alec
10-25-2016, 02:39 PM
Good morning / afternoon Peripheral,
I have been collecting books for many years, Stephen King for just over two years, when Simon started the collection thread, so now about four to five years.
I purchased a 1st edition of The Stand, with the idea in mind that it would be marvellous to read such a book in 1st edition form. It was in such good condition that I put it to one side and read another copy. That was my first King book and it went from there.
I have only read about a third of his books, so I am fortunate to have so much yet to enjoy.
There is always another book to collect, as you might have read, ninety percent of the books I own are signed and I have no problem in doubling up on any copy if one comes along. Different Seasons for example being the third signed copy I have just acquired.
Unlike other collectors I have not ventured into the world of magazines and other types of collectibles such as manuscripts etc. So in a sense I have confined myself to signed firsts and limiteds. There are many yet that I am missing, however the only signed first I lack is Storm of the Century. I firmly believe that not all books come at the right purchase price, however being philosophical about it, they will always catch up. I am in no hurry.
So compared to some of the collectors on this site, with proofs (the early Doubleday), magazines, manuscripts and much more, I am a collector inside tight parameters. Maybe one day I will branch out a little further.
I hope this has answered some of your questions and it is a pleasure to have done so.
Kindest regards
Alec.

Yeah, I love hearing these stories - so interesting. And yes Brian, the discipline of remaining focussed is a challenge, in a world of so many "gateway drugs" :)

As a certain Jon P has almost come to the end of his "Rare Proof Wednesday" posts, it seems Alec is taking up the mantle with a new "Rare SIGNED Proof Wednesdays" !

Here is his latest signed acquisition, There are very few signed 1st editions of this book and even less signed proofs!

Thank you Simon, much appreciated.
As you say, not many signed first editions and even though there must be some signed proofs, I have yet to see another.

Thank you gentlemen for the kind comments.

I wanted to post this as a thank you to Emmanuel at Very Fine Books.
He has just been responsible for sourcing, checking and shipping my latest acquisition, Cycle of the Werewolf, Collectors Edition. Comprising the book and portfolio, with complete set of prints and laid in artwork. Both copies being the same number. Both in immaculate condition.
I am unable to compete with Kris and his magnificent tray case, however it is wonderful to find a matching pair of these rare collectibles. Who knows how they will be housed? Totally the responsibility again of Emmanuel, with a few design parameters from me.
If you want something sourcing that will be guaranteed quality, this gentleman comes with my highest recommendation.
Once again a big thank you to Very Fine Books.
Images to follow after delivery.
Kindest regards
Alec.

Congrats, Alec on another great acquisition. Not to take anything away from your loyalty and experience with Emmanuel; but do you find his prices to be higher than market value in a lot of cases?

Good afternoon Brian,
I am sure that he will not mind me mentioning this as he is probably our biggest art collector on The Dark Tower that we hear from on a regular basis.
Kris (Webstar) and I were discussing and comparing notes on not only this collectible but quite a few others, after discussing the price I paid for this item and a few others we touched on, it would appear that Emmanuel's pricing was spot on and in no way reflected an increase in what one would expect to pay. Talking from my own experience the one thing I have always depended on is the quality that Very Fine Books supplies. Any book that falls below expectation is expensive.
Kindest regards
Alec.

Yes I agree with Alec. The price he paid was pretty much bang on to my fine set. In this instance VGB was perfectly priced:)

Good to know, Alec. I was quoted some pretty high prices in the past compared to the valuations from the group here on certain books.

Good morning Brian.
The group of collectors here on The Dark Tower have a combined knowledge of Stephen King that you would not find anywhere else. With regard to valuation I am comfortable accepting that the majority of collectors expect that there is a market price for each item, first edition signed, lettered, signed limited etc.
However I still believe that the same book in fine condition can and should vary in price. I am fortunate to have three signed first editions of Different Seasons, they are all in fine condition, nonetheless the copy that I highlighted earlier on in my thread I believe to be exceptional, it is still classified as fine, not new, brand new, mint and many other categories that are difficult to establish. Therefore I would rate this particular copy worth more than the other two.
We as collectors are dealing with items that have an infinite number of possibilities surrounding their condition and the price should surely reflect those subtle differences.
Perhaps this is why some sellers appear slightly more expensive than others. I am not so naive as to think this is true with everybody, however I have certainly found it so with Very Fine Books.
Kindest regards
Alec.

And the old adage, "You usually get what you pay for". In the end, if you're happy with your experience, that's all that matters.

It's the Lettered Shining. The Catalog (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Shining+The+-+Lettered&redirect=no) is (as always) your friend..

Huh, weird. That's what I had thought at first, I guess I just didn't expect it to be smaller than the s/l copy.
