Thank you very much to Simon for posting these three images.
For those who have read the book I am sure your imagination configured your own vision of The Dark Riders. Then after the film your mental portrayal may have moved somewhat. To me these three pieces really struck a chord. I appreciate not everyone’s choice, so to those who it appears felt the same way as I did, many thanks for the affirmation.
Jay Johnstone has produced a wide variety of work, not all to my taste, however I am not going to criticise art that is beautifully constructed.

It appears that the perception we have is very similar when our imagination kicks in during reading. The films as well certainly did not disappoint.

Another fine set of Tolkien's famous trilogy added to Alec's collection recently. Not signed but a first edition set in quite amazing condition with no sign of the fading so often seen on these grey dust jackets. housed in custom slipcases.

They published those thar books,
But I didn't buy them,
Despite their grey good looks.

And now Alec he's blessed with 'em
Decoratin' his shelf,
While I'm stuck in an envious position,

Thank you Steve (love the poem), Garrell, Mike and Glen. Thank you as always to Simon for the posting.
This trilogy is the only one I have seen that has maintained its original colour of slight grey green. Without question they have been stored in the dark for this to happen. I purchased them just prior to December last year from one of the most famous book dealers in London.
They are all first editions, first state, with no flaws at all. If the tops of the spine on the dust jackets, or indeed any of the edges appear slightly wrinkled, it is due to the fact that they are mylar covered and also have a protective plastic sleeve on each one, which has distorted the images a little. One set of books that will not be leaving me.
Thank you for the support even though it is Tolkien and not King.

Alec

Undesirable, I agree.
Though as it seems increasingly difficult to obtain a signature, before his signing completely dries up, undesirable appears better than a blank.

Two new additions to Alec's Tolkien collection. Beautiful leather limited editions in the classic binding style.

The Hobbit is limited to 500, the first 100 signed by his, now deceased, son Christopher.
The Silmarillion was proposed as 1,000 copies but it is highly likely only a third were printed. Christopher did sign the first 100 copies by number, though Alec mentioned he had only ever seen one. Most likely all sat in collections.

Thank you to Simon and for the explanation of the two books.
It is interesting the style adopted by the Tolkien Estates on those books that they pass for publication. These two are very plain with no extra additions from the normal published books. Just a book plate in each and print runs of 500 and probably 300 for The Silmarillion. Both copies have Christopher Tolkien’s signature on copies 1-100. Yet it is virtually impossible to obtain either one, the signed Silmarillion never appearing anywhere for purchase. You do not get exciting designs from anything Tolkien and yet once purchased they hardly ever resurface. They seem to have a formula that hooks people in and it certainly is not lavish designs.
In some ways comforting to think that “plain old school” publishing still has its attraction.
Thank you Steve and John for the comments, much appreciated.

That would be wonderful if it happened. I like that proof, and also the sub headings of each chapter. Always wondered how you could get these. Always wanted to read a King book before issue. Imagine it’s pretty satisfying.

Did King do this before? Feels very Blood Meridian to me (sub headings at the beginning of chapters)

Nice edition, nice to see a special edition of a proof, and thanks for posting the pics.

I have to say, I don't like the spoilerish chapter subheads and hope they aren't in the US trade hardcover (I had to train myself to look past them when reading things like The Mist).

Alec
06-26-2022, 01:15 PM
I totally agree with your comments on the chapter subheadings.
Normally just “Chapter 8” is sufficient, then find out yourself.
I could not say for certain reference the layout of the US hardcover. It’s not uncommon though for Hodder and Stoughton to produce something specific to the UK market.
And yes, it is rather nice to see a proof copy that looks unique.

So once again, apologies to Alec as its taken me a few days to get to this. (part of the reason why will be posted in my own collection thread soon!)

Alec's new acquisition is a 2 volume very limited edition of the "Song of the Anuir", published posthumously by Christopher Tolkien. This is limited to only 6 copies, painted by Ruth Lacon, it is all hand painted, illuminated and illustrated, meaning each copy is slightly different and unique.

"The Song of the Ainur” is about the creation, part of the legend at the start of the Silmarillion.

Thank you for all the superlatives used. I am certain that Ruth Lacon would be delighted at the appreciation of her work. To produce twelve individually illustrated and illuminated books, shows to me a patience and dedication way beyond my thought process. The idea that the “concentration was soothing” and “an oasis of sanity” shows just how different some creative people look at life.
I had reason to visit Oswestry on numerous occasions, a town on the Welsh border. Finding out that the artist lived not far away I elected to contact her and ask if I could see some of her work. The six pairs of books had sold instantly. Nonetheless I thought a visit would most certainly be worth the extra miles. On arriving she informed me that a pair had just been cancelled and was I interested!!!
Hard to believe how lucky that trip turned out to be.
Thanks again for the comments.

Thank you for highlighting these Jeremy, however I have been very strict with the parameters in which I collect Tolkien. There are so many variations of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, not to mention the other smaller books he published in his lifetime. I am not a completist and would rather have two copies of the same book in fine condition than variations in not such an acceptable state. Nonetheless thank you again for thinking of me, really appreciated. Best wishes with the King acquisitions. Alec.

This is an oil on board by the late Roger Garland, one of the better known Tolkien illustrators. This particular painting was destined to be the cover artwork for “Sauron Defeated”, however it was changed at the last minute. Surprisingly the replacement is still known as “Sauron Defeated II”. This is one of only two Tolkien originals that Roger and Linda Garland have ever sold. The other resides in a private museum in Switzerland.

The collection of original Tolkien oil paintings, as Simon explained, has remained largely intact apart from two pieces, this being one of them. Strangely this is still referred to as “Sauron Defeated I”, whereas the piece finally chosen is indicated as “Sauron Defeated II”. However which way, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have one of them in my collection.

The difficulty is the speed in which some of these collectibles are drying up, no longer available as they are locked into collections and do not reappear. It does not seem so long ago that signed first editions were in abundance, along with a lot of signed limiteds and lettereds. Not so now. Still I suppose it makes the acquisition that much more gratifying! (And a little more expensive).

No Alan, that will always remain as a collection.
I am selling off a large percentage of my Stephen King collection, those are the only ones for sale.

Thank you to Simon as always for posting this edition.
To everyone that has commented on “The Hobbit”, thank you, always a great incentive to remain searching for that something special.
It would be amiss not to say a little about this book. I am not entirely sure about the full history, other than the fact it spent most of its 86 years in California, hence the complete lack of foxing, attributable to your wonderful climate. From there to the U.K. and a couple of rare book dealers and fortunately next was to me. I have never seen a copy in this condition, it appears unread, as it is still tight in the heart of the textblock and it is without spine lean or any other movement, absolutely square. The dust jacket has survived miraculously, free of tears, chips or any of the damage normally found after this length of time. Certainly a volume I never thought to find.

New Potter book added to Alec's collection:

The Fifteen Red Leather Copies of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

AN IN–DEPTH LOOK AT THE RAREST COPIES OF J. K. ROWLING’S CASSIC NOVEL.

In 2012, Bloomsbury, the British publisher of the iconic Harry Potter series, marked the 15th anniversary of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with a special contest for fans. The prize was a limited edition of the book, with only 15 copies in existence, each one leather-bound and signed by author JK Rowling. For years, the public could only imagine what these copies might look like, but finally, one has made its way to auction.

Fans could only enter the competition by submitting their letters through post boxes at participating bookshops and libraries. The challenge was to write a letter of no more than 50 words, and entrants were encouraged to get creative with drawings and elaborate designs.
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/15copies-A.jpg
Rare copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Unlike regular copies of the book, this edition was not available for purchase and only 15 copies were ever produced. One of the winners of this coveted prize was Chloe Esslemont, a 16-year-old school girl at The Nelson Thomlinson School in Wigton, Cumbria. Chloe’s love for the Potter series was evident in the letter she submitted, expressing why she adored the books and their intricate details that became significant in later novels. Her striking entry and imaginative art earned her a spot as one of 14 runners-up, each receiving a copy of the special 15th anniversary edition.

Since then, and because the lucky owners decided to not do it, photos of the special edition remained unseen – until now. In December 2022, Chloe’s copy went up for auction, offering a glimpse into the elusive anniversary edition. As a fan since the age of five, Chloe has seen the Harry Potter phenomenon grow and evolve, but her passion for the books remains unchanged. She says of her decision to sell the book, “the money would be useful now.” Chloe’s winning entry demonstrated her deep love for the series, and her appreciation for the “insignificant things proving very significant later.”

This special edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is bound in luxurious red leather and boasts gilded edges. The cover showcases gold embossing of the book’s title, the iconic Hogwarts crest, and the signature of J.K. Rowling. The spine of the book is equally impressive, featuring the title and a smaller version of the author’s signature, making it the only edition in existence with her signature on it.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/15copies-B.jpg
Rare copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

The attention to detail extends to the inside of the book, which has the same layout and content as the standard Bloomsbury edition of Philosopher’s Stone. Moreover, this particular copy is in impeccable condition, as it has remained unread since it was awarded as a prize in 2012.

It’s not surprising that this special edition has remained largely unknown, as it was not included in official bibliographies by Peter Errington. It is also noteworthy that this limited edition of only 15 copies has its own ISBN, further emphasizing its rarity and significance. The fact that this edition is so limited, with only 15 copies in existence, makes it a truly exclusive and highly sought-after item for Harry Potter fans.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/15copies-C.jpg
Rare copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Last, but not least, let’s not forget that this special edition represents not just a physical artifact, but a cultural touchstone. The Harry Potter books have become a global phenomenon, inspiring countless fans. These fifteen copies are a testament to the enduring appeal of the books, and the love and passion they evoke in their fans. They are a symbol of the connection between reader and author, a tangible link to the creative process that brought Harry Potter to life. To own one of these rare books is to own a piece of literary and cultural history, a symbol of the power of imagination and storytelling.

Thanks to the generous winner of the auction, we now have a better understanding of this unique and rare piece of Harry Potter history. Whether displayed on a bookshelf or carefully preserved in an attic, this book is sure to be treasured for years to come, a testament to the lasting appeal of J.K. Rowling’s magical world of Harry Potter.

Thank you to Simon for sorting out what to me appeared an impossible link from “The Rowling Library”.
To Jerome, Jeremy and Elliot for their comments.
One of those rare occasions when an item makes it under the radar that you never would have thought possible. Clearly stated a 1st edition celebrating 15 years with just 15 signed copies, at a time when J.K.Rowling had almost stopped signing. Sometimes luck goes your way and this was decidedly one of them, only fair as there are plenty that do not!!
As I had posted some time ago a 1st edition from 1997, this makes an ideal companion for the Rowling completist.
Best wishes.
Alec.

Thank you so much.
I had seen a couple of these sell in the past, however missed this one altogether.
Listed as “2001” seems a heck of a mistake, if I am reading it correctly.
Very kind of you to bring it to my attention.
Now there is a fine decision for the weekend!!

Incredible BBC archive video of J R R Tolkien talking about his life and creation of elvish:

http://youtu.be/rre7zQGcldI?si=Ds1qMHy3VDj7x-uo

In this video, you can see Tolkien writing elvish directly into one of the 3 volumes of TLOTR. This is the only book that Tolkien signed in front of any cameras. These very volumes have recently been acquired by Alec along with the relevant ephemra and added to his collection!

Here are some images and I'll leave the story of their acquisition to Alec...

Thank you to Simon for taking time out to post this link and images, always appreciated.

By 1968 Tolkien had established himself solidly with The Lord of the Rings (primarily in the United States and then in the U.K.) but had not proceeded to garner much attention on the television. The interview here shows one of those rare events, even more so as he elected to sign the first book of the trilogy in “Elvish”. This was a language that he created and taught himself to speak and write it. A phenomenal undertaking considering from 1954 all his other commitments.
This set with several pieces of ephemera came up for auction at Sotheby’s on the 12th December this year. Prior to that it had only appeared once since 1968. I do not know who has owned it during the last 55 years, however only 2 people I believe. It shows the incredible penmanship that Tolkien possessed and which never seemed to become “spidery” even in his eighties.
I have been reluctant to post over the last few months, not wanting to turn a Stephen King thread into Tolkien, however Simon assured me otherwise and so he kindly moved forwards.
I hope the above is of interest, certainly the 7 minutes of film gives a much better insight into the character of Tolkien.
Taking this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful Christmas with family and friends.
Very best wishes,
Alec.

What a breathtaking set of books. Just extraordinary. Like you stated, Tolkien's penmanship, even in his eighties, was amazing and just beautiful to look at. Big congratulations Alec! Please keep posting your new acquisitions. Speaking for myself, seeing books like this and the sheer history behind them, is the reason I got into book collecting. I would imagine most, if not all, that are part of this community, would consider themselves bibliophiles first and Stephen King collectors second. At least that's my humble opinion. Again, congratulations Alec on these incredible additions to your collection and Happy Christmas!

A change to the usual scheduled programming!

We tend to marvel when we see copies of Carrie, seemingly unaffected by age over the last 50 years, well this book is nearly 100 years old and condition is remarkable!

1st edition, oversized and a signed limited as well. (signed by Author AND Artist!) See the details in the photos below:

Just beautiful. Looks like it just came straight out of the publisher circa 1926. Congratulations as always on such a remarkable addition to your collection! One day perhaps, you can show how you display these treasures. Again, congratulations.

Thank you to Becca, Frank, Kris and Mike, amazing how a bear we grew up with can still strike a chord.
Not something that I would normally collect, just found it irresistible. Fortunate that the book was in such good condition. The Chelsea Bindery made the tray case which I find equally as delightful.
Here’s to another century of “Winnie the Pooh”.
