While I have many pictures up in various areas of this site, I will try to focus here just on my Stephen King collection, of which the Dark Tower series is the cornerstone. Be patient with me as I slowly migrate photos over to this thread.

In any event, I hope you enjoy!

Apologies, as I do these pictures one at a time.

Nice collection, David. I've never seen so many DT books together in one bookshelf. Very cool.

The book that seems sort of misplaced is the S/L of Straub's FLOATING DRAGON in the last picture. I've always loved that book and especially the Underwood-Miller limited edition. That dust jacket by Leo and Dianne Dillon is amazing. If that original artwork ever came up for sale I would give it serious consideration.

What is just to the right of FLOATING DRAGON? Is that the Putnam proof of FLOATING DRAGON?

Yes. Peter Straub is one of my favorite authors and I have a pretty decent collection of his books.

I guess I knew that already:doh: I really like Straub too, but Floating Dragon is the only S/L I own by him.

I'm glad you got your collection out here Wiz, its wonderful!!

Thanks Matt, but I'm just getting started. What I am most excited to show is not my bookshelves (which cannot display all that I own...there are books behind books there and others kept elsewhere) but individual editions that are special to me. Hope y'all don't get bored, because eventually, I will have 50 or more pics to post.

Now, I will post some pictures of my favorite or special books.

I will dedicate the first few to our dear Matt, who has a soft spot in his heart for The Stand. So in honor of you Matt, I will share my Stand story.

Way back when (at least 15 years ago I would guess), I read a paperback copy of The Stand and was so taken with the story and character development that to this day The Stand ranks among the top 5 favorite stories of mine. The Stand was also the book that spurred me to read most of the other Stephen King books out at the time. I was so in love with this story that I decided I wanted to purchase a hardcover edition of the book. A little investigation led me to the discovery of Bett's Bookstore in Bangor Maine. I contacted Stu and he indeed did have a beautiful 1st edition 1978 copy of The Stand (book and DJ in Fine condition). He was asking $200 and I nearly fell out of my chair. I talked it over with my wife and we both agreed that $200 for a book was completely insane, but she encouraged mt to go ahead and buy it if it would truely make me happy. So I did, and that was the start of my King collection....a first edition 1978 copy of The Stand.

And here it is:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/Stand_Betts.JPG

wizardsrainbow
01-11-2008, 12:56 PM
So Matt, as I know you LOVE The Stand as much as I do and that you are now the proud owner of a wonderful UK 1st edition, here are some other Stands that I own:

This is a signed 1978 first edition in pristine condition:

Here is a letter from Stephen King's office in 1997 to a guy in Georgia telling him that Stephen King is accepting autograph requests.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/Stand_UK1.JPG

wizardsrainbow
01-11-2008, 01:00 PM
And he sent King a 1st edition UK Stand to sign, and here it is:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/Stand_UK.JPG

wizardsrainbow
01-11-2008, 01:03 PM
I will have to post another 2 pics later cause I do not have them available:

my S/L Stand
a signed copy of the 1990 re-issue of The Stand

So in all, I have a nice little Stand "portfolio"

wizardsrainbow
01-11-2008, 01:13 PM
Now, on to the cornerstore of my collection....The Dark Tower.

I have never counted, but The Dark Tower books and artwork that I own must comprise 30%-40% of my collection in terms of number of items but I would guess is 75% of the total value of my collection.

I apologize as some of the pictures are old and some may be a little blurry (a photog I am NOT), but I do not like to handle my books any more than I have to, just to monimize any incidental marks/scratches/fingerprints etc.

To start things off, here is a Lettered Gunslinger.

***There is published descriptions out there that say only 35 Lettered Gunslingers were done, but this is FALSE. There were 52 Lettered Gunslingers done (according to Robert Weiner at Grant books), A-Z and AA-AZ. My copy is AY.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/DT1_SL_Lettered.JPG

wizardsrainbow
01-11-2008, 01:15 PM
As I have noted before, I have 5 complete same-number Dark Tower sets, but here is an exaple of the S/L version (which is identical to the Lettered version)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/DT1_SL_Numbered.JPG

wizardsrainbow
01-11-2008, 01:20 PM
We may as well continue on with Gunslingers:

I have in my collection pristine copies of every signed version done (not counting ARCs) with the lone exception being the first edition UK Sphere paperback (I have that, just not signed). Stu had listed one for sale in the Chris Cavalier collection which he reserved for me but then never could find it, so alas, there is a single hole in my Gunslinger collection.

Here is an inscribed 1st Grant edition

wizardsrainbow
01-11-2008, 01:33 PM
And finally, to round out the Gunslinger collection....

here is a well-known Plume 1st edition 1988 but also side-by-side with a variant cover (on the right) that was pulled because King did not like the layout and changed his mind at the last minute. It is not known how many variant covers survived, but they are pretty rare.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Plume_VariantCover.JPG

So, what I am missing is a signed UK Sphere 1st edition but also the Plume Arc with the Orange Cover.

Thanks for the kudos everyone! It is great to be able to share with people who "understand." :huglove: to you all.

And now, I will continue with more of the DT part of my collection. Obviously, I am not going to post everything I have....that would be a monumental task.

As for DT II, The Drawing of the Three, I will start with my S/L Author's edition (crappy pic sorry)

wizardsrainbow

I have also signed versions of both Grant editions (1st and 2nd)

I have 2 signed 1st editions and just realized I have no pictures to post!

So here is a signed 2nd edition (actually, the only one I have ever seen). This too is inscribed to KelLee Larson:

S/L Drawing of the Three Tapes (S/L Gunslinger tapes you see now and then, but NEVER these). How many of you knew these existed in S/L form?

***edited*** I do also have in my collection an unbound copy of Grant's Drawing of the Three and The Wastelands. Again, never ever seen before. **end edit**

Moving on to The Wastelands....I have 2 signed Grant 1st editions plus Ned Dameron portfolios. Also a signed Wastelands Viking 1st edition.

On to Wizard & Glass, and here I can tell you the story I know about KelLee Larson.

As I said, KelLee was a Grant employee for several years doing the kind of job our lovely Karen does today (and not as well as Karen I must add). If you have read Wizard & Glass, you know that in the story Roland and Susan pass notes secretly to each other. The notes are not typeset in the book, but are written in an actual hand. Susan is none other than KelLee Larson.

Here is a Grant 1st edition Wizard & Glass inscribed to KelLee. The inscription alludes to KelLee's alter ego. Pretty cool I think, and thanks to Hutch for selling me the book several years ago. I cannot recall ever seeing another inscribed Wizard & Glass, let alone one to "Susan." This book is a real prize for me, more so because of the story that goes with it.

The artist Darrell Anderson did a number of remarques (about 20-25 is my recollection) in Grant trade editions of Song of Susannah at the time of publication. I own 5 of them but have pictures of only 4. I bought B-Macs "Rose" remarque from him about 2 years ago.

Here is either the Dark Tower or Castle Discordia, I do not know which, but with the various turrets, I suspect the latter:

Now on to DT VII: The Dark Tower which is where my greatest loves are.

Most of you know that artist Michael Whelan did the artwork for both The Gunslinger and The Dark Tower. In fact, Bob owns many of the original paintings done for those two books (mostly The Gunslinger).

Well, Michael lives perhaps 40 minutes away from me here in Connecticut and I first met him and his wife Audrey Price at Palavercon in the summer of 2005. From that time until now, my friendship with the two of them has bloomed and we have gotten together several evenings over the past couple of years.

Well, for DT VII, Michael decided to do a number of remarques (free hand illustrations) in copies of DT VII (the actual number is not known but thought to be around 25), most of them Artists editions, and he sold them separately on his website. Well, I simply adore Michael's work, and I was fortunate enough to purchase a breathtaking remarqued copy of DT VII (actually in a S/L edition) from Ceri (calla_wolf) a couple years ago. He was very very reluctant to part with it, but in the end he did, much to my eternal pleasure. Over time, I have accumulated a total of 11 remarques done in DT VII books.

These are my pride and joy and may be the favorite part of my entire collection. So, here is what some of you have deemed "the Wizard collection."

Now, the following posts are Dark Tower related. When I found out that Marvel comics was going to do a series on the Dark Tower, I was pretty enthusiastic. As you know, the first issue of Gunslinger Born came out in February 2007. As you also might remember, the Sketch book was released almost 2 months prior to that in order to generate excitement about the upcoming release. I was pretty impressed with the artwork done by Jae Lee at Marvel, so on a whim, I Googled him and found an e-mail address. I e-mailed Jae, told him what a huge fan I was of The Dark Tower and how much I liked his artwork. I asked him if any of it was for sale. By pure dumb luck, he wrote me back and asked me a bit more about myself and my Dark Tower interest. Then he said that usually all requests for original art were usually handled by his agent, but given my love of the Dark Tower and the fact that my office was right on the way he walks to his job at Marvel, he told me that he would sell some pieces to me directly. He then sent me by e-mail images of all his chararacter sketches and every panel he had done for the first issue and told me I could buy the entire lot for $20,000. That was a bit more than I was willing to spend at the time, but I did get first pick of anyone at the artwork. The following images are what I purchased.

I am pleased that I bought Roland, Cuthbert and Alain to keep the ka-tet together in the same collection, and Jae was glad of that too. So here are the original drawings I purchased (images provided by Jae Lee; in person, the shading is much lighter than in the images).

Back to the DT collection books...continuing on with DT VII

Here is a real rarity and the only one I know to exist.

It is the UK ARC of DT VII. Only 100 were done but this one is signed by both Stephen King and Michael Whelan. A HUGE thank you goes out to Kenny (Dolan) for obtaining King's signature on this book for me at a Barnes & Noble signing here in the city that I was unable to attend. He waited all night long and got this one signed for me and one of his own books signed.

So, for now, that is the end of the picture show of my favorite books in my collection.

Some of you may be asking yourself:

(1) What books are you missing?
(2) What books are you desperately looking for?

(1) Compared to Bob and probably Hutch, I am missing a TON of stuff, but for me, the obvious holes are that I do not own any S/L or Proof copies of The Plant. I have a goodly number of ARCs or Proofs but mostly only for the later stuff and The Dark Tower series of course. I never was much of a UK 1st edition or proof collector. But, for the most part, I own a very high percentage of all the S/L King has ever done and have both 1st editions and signed first editions of most all books King has written.

(2) What am I desperately looking for. I will answer this in two parts. First, those books that if they ever come to market, you'd better get outta my way, cause I will fight you hard for them; and Second, those books that I would be real happy to add to my collection and would put up a good fight to get but in the end would let it go if the economics got "silly."

Wizard's "Get outta my way books"

(1) Orange cover Plume Gunslinger ARC (sorry John, know you REALLY want this one too, good luck)
(2) Signed UK 1st edition Song of Susannah
(3) A signed UK Sphere 1st edition Gunslinger or Wastelands
(4) Michael Whelan remarques in DT VII books
(5) King signed Artists Edition of Wolves of the Calla
(6) King signed Artists Edition of Song of Susannah
(7) New Lieutenant's Rap envelope

Wizard's "like to have books"

(1) signed 1st edition IT; I have a signed 2nd edition
(2) signed 1st edition The Shining
(3) Lettered Regulators
(4) Lettered Skeleton Crew

Thanks a lot everyone. I will add more pictures if I buy a really cool book, but otherwise, this represents my core favorites.

Feel free to contact me AT ANY TIME WITH ANY QUESTIONS about collecting in general or whatever. I love to talk about this stuff!

Hmm....delicious!. Very, very nice, Wiz.

I would love to have a NLR, especially with the necklace, but it's really hard to find one for sale even without the necklace. I still do not own a S/L of Salem's Lot and Legends as well.

I think that signed Nightmares in the Sky is really cool too!.

Wiz, I just spent a looong time catching up in this thread and admiring your collection. I especially enjoy the remarqued books and other artwork. Thank you so much for taking the time to post all these photos and all the information and stories.

By the way, early in the thread you almost threw me for a loop when you said you own the complete set of #296. Then I remembered that my DT II, III, and IV are #196.

Fantastic collection Wiz. Very impressive. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I noticed you have doors on your display cabinets. I have been looking for several large cabinets with doors for my collection, but I cannot find any. I refuse to put mine on display in glass fronted cabinets as all my rooms have windows. Got to keep the UV rays away. I've had several pictures destroyed by sunlight in the past.

Yes, I took the largest bookcase with me from my last job and ordered the other 2 when I ordered all of our office furniture. So when I transport all these books home, only one of the bookcases will come with me. I have looked a bit on the Internet for large bookcases with doors (and locks) but so far have struck out

Fsmdr
01-18-2008, 10:08 PM
There is large cases with solid doors and lock that I've seen in IKEA, but none of them look terribly attractive. I guess if you want to maximize space, you'll have to have a carpenter build you one. Plus if you do, you can add on open shelves to the top of case with the solid doors (all the way to the ceiling) for your non collectable books.:)

That would be my dream home office/library room.

Mr. Rabbit Trick
01-19-2008, 01:01 AM
Yeah, I think the best way is to have cases specially built. At the moment all my books are stored in the wardrobes in my spare rooms, and I never get to see them properly.

Individual collecting preferences, I guess. I have multiple copies of a few books. I start out just wanting one but oftentimes while searching eBay, ABE or bookseller websites I see another copy priced reasonably or relatively cheaply and I just can't help myself. So I buy it and then the process repeats itself. It's hard to pass up what I think is a good deal.
