Like the top 2000s films thread, I'd like to hopefully create another list for the 1990s decade as well. Since there are so many great movies each year, not to mention each decade, I've developed a system in that first thread that seems to work, for me anyway. Please feel free to post your ruminations and systems and lists. Let's do this for all the decades!

I know my first three right away:

1. Death and the Maiden (1994)
2. The Ninth Gate (1999)
3. Bitter Moon (1992)

will now think of the other seven...

I just look through thousands of movies on IMDB going through year to year and I make a list and then I just go through process of elimination. Watching Shawshank Redemption now and it's definitely on my top 10 for this decade. I actually caught most of Titanic last week and while it won't be on my list this far removed from my last viewing it's still a very solid film. I think I can naturally assume that Dark City will be making my list but it is hard to say. Much like my 2000's list it could be a bit before mine is done.

In roughly chronological order:

Goodfellas (1990)
Jacob's Ladder (1990)
Hard-Boiled (1992)
The Bride with White Hair (1993)
The Mystery of Rampo (1994)
Forrest Gump (1994)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Comrades, Almost a Love Story (1996)
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
The Sixth Sense (1999)

The last one cut (" #11 ") was Boogie Nights (1997).

Oh, and since I am a huge fan of Korean cinema, I would be remiss if I didn't add my top Korean film from the '90s: The Harmonium in My Memory (1998). That's not to say it's the best Korean film of the decade or anything; only that most of the Korean movies I've seen are post-1999. But it is a sweet little movie, with arguably the best actress working today (Do-yeon Jeon) in an early role.

Overall the 90's are weak. I mean there a lot of very good entertainment films but i really wasn't until the last few years we got some very good films. 94/97-99 were the best years of the decade. 97/99 being the best.

So I was able to whittle each year down to its Top 3. This actually proved to be quite difficult for some years, such as 1994 and 1995. So:

1. Dances with Wolves (1990)
2. Misery (1990)
3. Ghost (1990)

1. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
2. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
3. Night on Earth (1991)

1. Reservoir Dogs (1992)
2. The Lover (1992)
3. Aladdin (1992)

1. Schindler's List (1993)
2. Jurassic Park (1993)
3. Three Colors: Blue (1993)

1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
2. Pulp Fiction (1994)
3. Natural Born Killers (1994)

1. The Usual Suspects (1995)
2. Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
3. Seven (1995)

1. Primal Fear (1996)
2. Fargo (1996)
3. Kolya (1996)

1. Titanic (1997)
2. Good Will Hunting (1997)
3. Contact (1997)

1. American History X (1998)
2. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
3. Dark City (1998)

1. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
2. American Beauty (1999)
3. Fight Club (1999)

I'll come back a bit later with the 1 through 30 ranking.

There's actually a lot there that I considered before narrowing down my list. Dark City was hard to leave off, as was Shawshank, Jurassic Park, T2, and Titanic. On the other hand, I did not care for Fight Club or American Beauty much at all.

Interesting that Goodfellas did not even make your top three for 1990, as I believe it is a strong contender for best film of the decade.

mae

Sadly, I watched Goodfellas only once and while I enjoyed it, I may need to rewatch it (I have the DVD), because it didn't jump out at me or sear itself into my memory.

I haven't watched Casino in a very long time. I made a sort of prelimary list (narrowed it down to about 20 films) but there a lot of films I have on hand that I haven't seen from the decade so over the next few weeks I'll dedicate my movie watching, as I've watched few movies lately, strictly to 90's movies. Going to check to see what I have on hand...I've got:

Dances With Wolves (haven't seen in years)
Ed Wood (never seen)
Carlito's Way (never seen)
Miller's Crossing (never seen)
Secrets and Lies (never seen)
Sling Blade (never seen)

Also want to watch Quiz Show, Krantz and Gouldenstein are Dead and some others as well.

I can understand saying that Goodfellas isn't Scorsese's best film, but not even in his top 10? I don't know about that. I'd love to see your list of Marty's top 10 best films.

I'm sure you will have The Aviator ahead of it. I strongly disagree with that. The Aviator is one of the least favorite Scorsese films I've ever seen.

1. Raging Bull
2. Hugo
3. The Aviator
4. Taxi Driver
5. After Hours
6. Casino
7. Gangs of New York
8. The Departed
9. Shutter Island
10. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
11. Cape Fear
12. Goodfellas

The best was either The Matrix or Terminator 2:)

T2 is amazing (and 1991 was pretty weak overall) but was The Matrix really as good as some of the great movies of 1999? I realize these things are very subjective, but as much as I used to hold The Matrix in high regard, I don't think it's held up as well as T2 has, despite the fact that both had very subpar sequels.

I wouldn't even know I get reputation comments if I didn't get notifications about it lolWell, I'm not in any position to change that. All I can do is point out that "People who matter don't mind, and people who mind don't matter." Anonymous name-calling = stunted personality.

Personally, I think you have a point about Scorsese having done better, but I don't agree about every one of the films you listed topping it.
Certainly not Casino. Have you seen Mafia! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120741/) (Jim Abrahams, 1998 ) ...?

Mattrick
01-06-2014, 05:01 PM
That's where the subjectivity comes into it. Goodfellas, much like Scarface, are both similar films that while they may be entertaining I don't think have much more than that and are only put on such a pedestal because of the content of them and there is a definite line between people who loves Scorscese's crime/mob movies and aren't big fans of the rest of his work. I watched Mafia! a long time ago, only really remember the compy's eating the kid though haha

I have so many questions:

What is a reputation?
Where do I find them?
Is it something anonymous?
Can you get in trouble if you get enough of them?

I've been part of this site since 2007 and I've never heard of it. Whomever sent that should be ashamed. Have some balls and post it in the thread. I disagree with you on the Goodfellas subject, but I'm not going to start name calling and send reputations.

I forgot to talk about your list. After Hours and Shutter Island both ahead of Goodfellas I just can't agree with. I can make a case for almost any one of his films, but not those two. Especially not After Hours. You must really hate Goodfellas.

Also, I'm surprised how much you like The Aviator. It wouldn't even be in my top 10. Also, three of my favorite Scorsese films weren't on your list: The Color of Money, Mean Streets and The King of Comedy. Have you seen any of those, and if so, where would they fall on an extended list?

Those three Scorseces are amongst the few I haven't seen. I really went through Scorcese this past year and watched about half his catalogue. To my knowledge all I have left to watch (documentaries aside) are his first one (can't recall the name), Mean Streets, New York New York, The Color of MOney, The King of Comedy, Kundun, Last Temptation of Christ and Bringing Out The Dead.

I love The Aviator, saw it in theatres and bought the DVD almost immediately and have watched it about five times since...about due for another rewatch. It's one of the best bio-pics I've seen and Alan Alda is so goddamn good in it and it's my favourite DiCaprio role I think. After Hours is fantastic and the more I read about the story behind it, the more I appreciated it. Scorcese made it when he was frustrated with how the studios were messing with Last Temptation of Christ and he looked through a pile of scripts, chose After Hours and filmed it. He didn't storyboard, I think it was filmed in all of two weeks and all the camera work (some of it is extremely unique and great) is done entirely improvised and on the fly. The film really depicts Scorcese's state at the time. If it's been a long time since you've seen it you should revisit it. In terms of Scorcese it's easily his most underrated film; It's even in Eberts Great Movies list.

I re-watched Goodfellas and I still don't get what all the fuss is about. It's not a bad movie by any means but it feels so uninspired to me. Casino is much, much better than Goodfellas. The only thing that ever keeps me engaged in Goodfellas when I watch it is Lorraine Bracco because she's great in it.

The '96 Hamlet is such a cool movie.

The Brannagh one, right? I watched it a few years back and it was good and of course true to the play in it's 4 plus hour runtime! lol. I could watch it again but the length of it kind of keeps it in that every once in awhile watching category.

http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/lists/the-100-greatest-movies-of-the-90s-w486390

Ah, the 1990s – the decade that brought you indie-cinema breakouts and bullet-time blockbusters, fight clubs and foul-mouthed clerks, charismatic cannibal serial killers and "Choose Life!" sloganeering, Rushmore Academy overachievers and Royales with Cheese. Looking back on the movies that made the Nineties such a surprisingly fertile period for filmmakers and film lovers, you can see how so much of the foundation for the past few decades was laid so early on, from the rise of documentaries as a mainstream phenomena to the meta touches that would turn so many mix-and-match movies into wax museums with pulses. Sundance was to independent auteurs as Seattle was to grunge rockers. We would hang with slackers and Scottish junkies, smooth-talking criminals and abiding dudes. We would get cyberpunk as fuck. We would know kung fu – whoa!

So we've assembled a crack team of film fanatics, culture vultures, pop-culture pundits and various critics to weigh in on the 100 greatest movies of the Nineties. From Oscar-winners to obscure-but-wonderful gems, nonfiction social-issue sagas to a seven-hour Hungarian masterpiece, Titanic to Tarantino, these are the films we still argue over, quote endlessly and return to again and again. Crank up your dial-up connection, crack open a Zima and let the arguments begin.
