This is a thread to discuss your order of favorites of the series.

Mine is -

1. The Dark Tower

2. Wolves of the Calla

3. Song of Susannah - Wizard and Glass - The Wastelands - Drawing of the Three - The Gunslinger

I love them all though. So even doing this was hard for me.

interesting, sir. it's hard to do this.

1. drawing of the three
2. gunslinger
3. wizard and glass
4. the dark tower
5. wastelands
6. song of susannah
7. wolves

keep in mind, these are very close to each other. i have love for them all, but certain ones affected me more than others.

It is very difficult to put these in order because that is saying that one isn't worth as much as the other.

The first four:

The Wastelands
The Gunslinger
The Drawing of the Three
Wizard and Glass

I see the last three books as one.

Hardhard.
Let me see:

1. The Dark Tower
2. Wizard & Glass
3. The Gunslinger
4. The Wolves of Calla
5. The Waste Lands
6. The Drawing of the Three
7. Song of Susannah

1. Wolves of the Calla
2. Wizard and Glass
3. Song of Susannah
4. The Dark Tower
5. The Gunslinger

7. The Drawing of the Three

This is all being said with Wolves of the Calla being about 8 leaps and bounds ahead of all of the others, and The Drawing of the Three lagging about 3 miles behind the rest of the pack.

2. The Waste Lands

Jean

it is. In the natural (not forced) order it is, as you can see, in second position, right after the Wolves, along with The Drawing and the Waste Lands.

Ehhhh...hmmm, difficult, very difficult.

As of right now (and it is bound to change), it is:

1. Wizard and Glass
2. The Dark Tower
3. The Wastelands
4. Song of Susannah/Drawing of the Three
5. The Gunslinger
6. Wolves of the Calla

I seem to be one of the few members here who holds SoS in any high regard at all. Maybe it was because I was so dissapointed with Wolves, but I read through book 6 in a day, folks, that's how much it hooked me in. As afr as I am concerned, the magic of the second and third books is back with book 6, and that is why I love it so much. It is also why it is tied with book 2 on my list, because the two books read so similarly to each other, it's difficult for me to choose which one I like a little more.

Oh this is so hard to choose...

1. The Waste Lands
2. Wizard and Glass
3. The Gunslinger
4.Wolves of the Calla
5. The Drawing of the Three
6. Song of Susannah
7. The Dark Tower

They are all so close though, they affected me in different ways too so its hard to try to put them in order.

What happened to everyone arguing "read them in order. Don't start in the middle." Haha!

I'm playing with the idea of the revised version of the Gunslinger as "book 8."

1. The Gunslinger (original)
2. Drawing of the Three
3. Waste Lands
4. Wizard and Glass
5. Wolves of the Calla
6. Song of Susannah
7. Dark Tower
8. Gunslinger (revised)

Rereads mostly. Also, reading through various parts of those bottom three books. I've recently listened to The Gunslinger again....also I'm kinda on a Rev. Harrigan kick right now. :) Also, Wizard & Glass was too much time away from my friends Eddie, Susannah, Jake and Oy. :)

After rereading the whole series, I had to have SoS at the top! It works the same way the Waste Lands did: there's action all the time and no time to be bored so I had to do it justice, didn't I? :) (I just know already I'll be the only one, but I'm prepared to it!)

It's cool because so many list it at the bottom. I can't order the series in the traditional fashion as you can see, because I love the whole series so I had to do a "tiered" approach. But The Dark Tower hasn't changed as my favorite.

It's my favorite King book and probably my favorite book of all time. First off it's more of a "traditional" fantasy book compared to the others, and it's the fantasy angle that initially intrigued about the DT series. I think the flashback in W&G captured the whole DT mystic to perfection... Cuthbert and Alain, the dialogue of Mejis, Rhea of the Coos, the Pink Grapefruit, the whole mystery of the war against the "Good Man" ... plus I gained a greater appreciation for Roland after learning more of of his back story. As far as Susan, we all knew she was going to die, but when it finally happened it was still gut wrenching to experience. I had to hold back a bit 'o man-tears. I was haunted and fascinated by this book for years. I suppose I still am. Come, reap

While I agree we cannot always be on the same page, DotT was the one that sucked me into the series. I think you get a good feeling for Roland's personality in this one, and that's why I fell in love with it. :D

After my first read on W&G I remember starting to feel the same when I realized the flashback was going to be the whole story and the Ka-Tet wasn't going to make much progress toward their ultimate goal of the Tower ... but once I got over that disappointment I was gripped by the awesomeness that was W&G. Especially during the re-reads while I agonized waiting for Book 5.
Sorry to hear Mejis didn't do it for you. One of the reasons why I have Wolves ranked so high is that Calla Bryn Sturgis was able to recapture some of that Mejis feel.

I understand very well how it can be other people's favourite, and what Daghain said about Roland's personality is quite true, but I liked what I saw of him in the Gunslinger more and I became a fan reading the first line. The Gunslinger has still a special place for me since I was totally hooked by it. I loved the atmosphere in that one and that explains why I found TDOTT boring compared to it: it could be any book in any series since it doesn't have that particular atmosphere that I liked so much.

I posted that story somewhere... I was in hospital, with nothing to read, and Alexander (the one who lives in London now) brought to me the two books at once. If I had had any choice, my whole life would have been different.

Or maybe not. I loved King so much already by then, I would have given him the benefit of doubt for the second volume... sooner or later.

Jean
11-02-2008, 02:07 PM
No. He used to read a lot of King, but soon after I got out that hospital, our life started rapidly changing, and he went to England to live, and ever since he has been working so much he's never had time for a 7-volume book. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_sad.gif

Jean

So he has read them all but the last one? Don't you push him some time? Did he love it as long as he was reading it?
No, he read only the first two, then in 1997 he went to London, and with time brought me volumes 3 and 4, as he found them in charity shops. That's why I had to wait so endlessly long between books 3 and 4, and definitely one of the reasons why I was so disappointed by W&G. The three last volumes never emerged in charity shops till very recently, and by then I'd already read them in electronic version, and then my dear friends from here send them to me in the normal, book format.

So, Alexander was even more bored (in fact, absolutely disgusted) by The Gunslinger than I was, and he, too, loved The Drawing (agreed to read it only after I told him it was nothing even similar to The Gunslinger whatsoever), but hasn't gotten around to reading the rest yet.

Not entirely sure about the order, but....

I enjoyed The Gunslinger.

I thought The Drawing of the Three was better than The Gunslinger.

I thought The Waste Lands was better than the first two.

I didn't quite like Wizard and Glass as much as I was hoping to, but recognized it as quality.

Wolves of the Calla was a bit difficult in ploughing through, as was Wizard and Glass. I still liked it, but I don't know about quality....

Song of Susannah was my favorite volume when I finished it.

The Dark Tower replaced Song of Susannah as my favorite when I finished that.

It surprises me that many people seem to dislike The Gunslinger and really like Drawing of the Three.

Maybe this is the wrong place for this post, but here are the reasons I love The Gunslinger and dislike Drawing of the Three. I say dislike because it has grown on me slightly. When I first read it I hated it. It was only the glammer of The Gunslinger that kept me reading the series.

The Wastelands was a return to form after DotT and kept me hooked.

Some of what I like about The Gunslinger:-

Unlike anything by SK I had ever read.
Mysterious, especially with links to our world such as singing Hey Jude. Plus who or what is the gunslinger or the Man in black. So much enigma.
The gunslinger is alone. His isolation is hugely powerful and evocative.
A quest, you gotta love quests.
An antihero, Roland is not a hero, he is a central focal character, a force of nature.
The necessity of his isolation is shown when he drops Jake.

Some of what I dislike about TDofT:-

The writing does not flow.
It suddenly connects with our world in a big way, I loved Roland's world being a bit linked, but not so forcefully.
The action was stilted.
It brought in partners for a man who is defined by his isolation.
It shifted the parameters and expectations set up by The Gunslinger.

I'd have to say I felt similarly.

The Gunslinger came to me as dull. [Shoot me] The 'dark' atmosphere was far too somber to the point of colorlessness. If you get what I mean. I don't really know what I mean either. But I didn't really like it.

My current order is such:

1) Wizard and Glass
2) Song of Susannah
3) The Waste Lands
4) The Drawing of the Three
5) Wolves of the Calla
6) The Gunslinger

Rather queer order, I think compared to others, well eh.

SoS is great. But the Ka tet is NEVER together in this book. Not in a single scene. I have Wizard and Glass as my favorite because it's the only one in the series that can be read without reading the others. It stands alone.

SoS is great. But the Ka tet is NEVER together in this book. Not in a single scene. I have Wizard and Glass as my favorite because it's the only one in the series that can be read without reading the others. It stands alone.
Also, SoS is a little short.
So is The Gunslinger.
Lame reasons to put them in the bottom of my list, but I like long books. :cyclops:

I think the Gunslinger can stand alone, too. Quite well.

Of course, I don't get how WOTC and Dark Tower can be on the lowest rung in your choices... ;)

I'm really sad to see so many people put SoS at the bottom of their list :( I really don't understand it.
I don't, either.

Une amie of mine, believe it or not, put The Drawing of the Three at the bottom of her list; that's even harder to believe, isn't it?

About WoTC and TDT being at the bottom of my list, it's basically due to the fact that I really liked the first four books (it seems all girls like W&G anyway :P)
Jean, I really didn't like TDOTT as much as the others. I guess I found it was more of an introduction to the real story than a part of the series. I thought it lacked fantasy. And I also didn't really like the main characters appearing in this one.
I guess that also helped putting TDT at the bottom of my list: I've never been too fond of the Italian gangster type like the Andolinis and Balazar. The book is great, though, just not as much as the others in my opinion. I'll have to reread WOTC since everytime I read it, I like it better :)

I am indefinitely bored by Italian gangsters, but even that didn't prevent me from loving the book... I loved exactly what you listed, the minimum of fantasy elements, the introduction of the characters, and how it (unlike the Gunslinger) finally became the real story, with all the dialectics of relationships.

ok, my list:

1. Wastelands
2. Dark Tower
3. Wolves Of Calla
4. Drowing Of The Three
5. Song Of Susannah
6. Gunslinger
7. Wizard And Glass

BUT :) I have to reread Wizard, maybe I will finally like it. Comic books show me I may change my mind.

The Little Sisters of Eluria is everything but an alternative ending.
It's about Roland after Wizard and Glass but before the Gunslinger. So it shows a piece of his journey when he was chasing the Man in Black.

BUT :) I have to reread Wizard, maybe I will finally like it. Comic books show me I may change my mind.

Well, I didn't like Wizard And Glass, didn't like it very much :) It was so boring for me, I wasn't interested in young Roland years at all, I wanted to know what is happening in the present time.
But now, as I read Dark Tower comics I start to like this period and I think I will finally like Wizard And Glass after second chance I will give to this book.

I have always liked backstory sections of novels/series. I also like history in general, so my enjoyment came from the telling of Rolands backstory and finding out what shaped him into the character that he became. It didn't have anything to do with the fact that it was a love story. But, being a love story didn't detract from it.

Also, I believe that in our polls at least, SoS came up last, and W & G came out on top. So, it seems that there are a few others who have the same tastes, though everyone is justified in their preferences.

IMHO those translations cannot be that bad. To sum up: I don't think anyone prefers WaG because of some kind of good or bad translation.

Mine is -

1. The Dark Tower

2. Wolves of the Calla

3. Song of Susannah - Wizard and Glass - The Wastelands - Drawing of the Three - The Gunslinger

I love them all though. So even doing this was hard for me.

I started this thread in 2008 and I was wondering if anyone's order of preference of the series has changed over the years?
Mine has but only in a very minor way. My latest order is -

1. The Dark Tower

2. Wolves of the Calla - Song of Susannah

3. Wizard and Glass - The Wastelands - Drawing of the Three - The Gunslinger

Thanks for letting my opinion be acceptable. I really WANTED to love all the Dark Tower books, since I loved the first 4. But those last 3 books, darn it, just didn't work for me. I was increasingly irritated by the language (the made up words, etc.) which for some reason just rubbed me the wrong way. Perhaps I was just in a bad mood while reading them, I don't know. If I ever get the time I'll read them all in a row and see what happens. Hopefully I'll like them them. And thinking about that, when the Keyhole book comes out that would be a great time to give them all a re-read in chronological order. Something to think about anyway.

For my part I am absolutely crazy about all the books but you are totally not alone. Unfortunately I have read this 'after the first 4 books King totally lost me' many times.
I was really worried to open the last book because many DT fans had been very disappointed by that time. I tried to open my mind and my heart as much as possible and I thought: 'This is my book, these are my people, it doesn't matter how King managed to write their story, I am here for them.' Well, I guess I was really lucky because I didn't need long time to be able to hear their voices.. to feel their skin as I touched the paper of the next page in the book.
All I can say is that I hope from the bottom of my heart that they (Roland and his ka-tet) will be able to find their way back to you sooner or later. I hope it doesn't sound very cheesy.

I'm not sure I've ever really chosen an order for the series. I tend to like some equally but in different ways. Also there are parts of each book I like better than others. Yeah pretty tough thread here. I would normally just go in order because the story flowed well together in transition. But... Some of the books I couldn't put down while others I read a little bit slower. I feel like he rushed the last three and I wasn't a big fan. I've read books 1-4 at least four times and 5-7 once. So here goes.

everyone who puts Wolves on top of their lists authomatically becomes an Honorary Bear.

For this reason alone, I'm SO tempted to put Wolves at the top, but it just can't quite beat the introduction of Eddie, so:

1. Drawing of the three
2. Wolves of the Calla
3. The Wastelands
4. The Dark Tower
5. Song of Susannah
6. The Gunslinger
7. Wizard and glass
8 Wind through the keyhole (I know people haven't been including this or Sisters, but I just love seeing it at the bottom)

And like so many people here, this is just the current list, subject to change without notice. But I'm curious about how people would rate these books based on the first reading only? When you had no idea what was going to happen? I think for me, VII would rate much higher. Sure, later rational thinking might make me realise that Drawing is a better read, but the first time I read The Dark Tower, was the first time I ever cried like a baby while reading a book.

1. The Gunslinger (one of the most creative and emotionally complex books I've ever read)
2. The Drawing of the Three (relatable, funny, and exciting, among other things)
3. Song of Susannah (kind of weird but very appealing and kind of mind-blowing)
4. The Waste Lands (boring in some places but a great story with an awesome ending)
5. Wolves of the Calla (some likable characters but doesn't seem worth its length)
6. Wizard and Glass (confusing with all those points of view, didn't connect much to the others)

Well, first off, what's with all the negative vibes, dude? lol Everyone is entitled to their opinion even if its wrong (Just kidding you dude) lol. Okay, jokes aside so DT IV is your favorite book in the series? Don't often see that so you're an original on that one. I'm boring in that I like 'em just fine in the order of release, though DT IV is my least favorite of the series. I'd say DTII is my favorite with I and VII following for my top three. I also carry WTTKH as 4.5 and enjoyed that book as well.

But hey, that's just me and you obviously have strong feelings another way. Cool. I guess main thing is you read and enjoyed the series, right? Hahaha, I didn't intend to sound so negative. I just reread it and...yeah...my bad.

Wizard and Glass has always resonated with me. The back story has so much rich detail, and gives wonderful insight into how Roland becomes, well, Roland.

I just started rereading the series again, and this will be my first opportunity to add WTTKH in the middle. I'm looking forward to a potentially new perspective this go round!

My order would be:
- The Waste Lands
- The Drawing of the Three
- The Gunslinger
- Wizard and Glass
- Wolves of the Calla
- The Dark Tower
- Song of Susannah

Honestly, the last four in the list are so close that any ordering is pretty meaningless. And none of them were bad, but I found the last three volumes to be, well, messy. Characters suddenly knew things they had never mentioned before, and that knowledge was not explained. New ideas and concepts were introduced that added to what went before, but didn't explain or unify it. The plots were meandering, and the pacing was all over the place.

Say what you will about the first three volumes, there was a sense of purpose. The plot moved forward. And there was a sense of epicness, of a looming confrontation, of a real danger that would meet Roland at the Tower. There was the sense that the elements - the Tower, the Rose, Flagg, and whatever awaited Roland at the the end of his quest - would be explained and unified in a grand vision and a final conflict. And some of it was resolved, in later volumes, but much of it was smothered in an avalanche of other ideas - Walk-ins, Taheen, Mordred, Blue Heaven, the Breakers, and the inclusion of the author himself. And much of it steeped in the patois of Calla Bryn Sturges, which was creative, but felt gimmicky; it did not make the world feel richer or more substantial.

By the way, I *love* The Gunslinger. There are days when that would be at the top of the list; the only reason I put 2 and 3 above it is that they expand the world and characters so brilliantly. But I love the feel of that first volume - the starkness of the writing, the coldness of Roland, the sacrifice of Jake. I read through the final conversation with the Man in Black so many times, trying to figure out what it meant, trying to discern what the Tower was, what it might hold, whether it needed to be destroyed or preserved, and why Roland was drawn to it.
