I would suggest editing them, and re-posting them more often than once a year; maybe quarterly or even monthly; or weekly for very fast readers. In a word, whenever you feel that you can re-post it without appearing a postwhore.

still can't place anything on my 2008 list; about four books unfinished, and about five others finished, but in Russian.

Patrick's 2008 Book List
(in reverse chronological order)

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, by Ray Bradbury (currently reading)

STARDUST, by Neil Gaiman
FIGHT CLUB, by Chuck Palahniuk
DUMA KEY, by Stephen King
THE SANDMAN, VOL. VI, by Neil Gaiman
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN by Cormac McCarthy
THE SANDMAN, VOL. V - A GAME OF YOU, by Neil Gaiman
NEVERWHERE by Neil Gaiman
THE PLANT, by Stephen King
DHARMA BUMS, by Jack Kerouac

Books I'm thinking about reading in 2008:

IT by Stephen King - I hear it's good.
Some of those Harry Potter books everyone's always yammering on about.
More Neil Gaiman. I  him.
A few more of those books that we all hear are classics but that I haven't actually read.
Koontz's next Odd Thomas book which is supposed to come out in May.
Other Stephen King stuff that I haven't gotten to yet, like INSOMNIA.
Whatever else strikes my fancy at the time.

I lost my copy of Foucault's Pendulum in Amsterdam 15 years ago, I wasn't getting on too well with it though...perhaps that level of reading doesn't suit Amsterdam mode ;)
I have In The Name Of The Rose too which I've yet to read - do you recommend that too, Jean?

Jean
01-17-2008, 01:58 AM
oh yes, but they are very different. I like Foucault's more, but Rose is a very good book, too. Then, of course, a lot depends on translation. There's a lot of humor in Foucault's, which may be lost if the translator is not bold enough. We here are happy to have a superb Eco translator.

Perhaps I should give Foucault's another try...a gap of 15 years is time enough for my literary tastes to have changed :)

Still stuck on that book about the nativity story's historical roots, halfway through The End of the Alphabet, by C.S. Richardson, and have reached the third chapter of my reread of The Bell Jar. I read one or two pages of the prologue to Prey before I stopped.

So basically the only book I've read this year is 'Salem's Lot, and that's because I only had fourteen pages left by the end of last year.

Blah.

Well, who knows... O.o

I guess I want to read Duma Key by Stephen King and I have Bridge to Terabithia that I've been meaning to read. I'd like to read as many books on architecture as possible. Also, finally reading Four Seasons would be nice too.

Ah yes, I'd like to read some classics like Catcher in the Rye and Foucalt's Pendulum and Todos los Fuegos el Fuego by Cortazar. And finally, Don Quixote by Cervantes.

The Yiddish Policeman's Union, Michael Chabon (audio)

I read this one last fall and really enjoyed it. I was hooked from the start as i found the whole premise of a jewish homeland in Alaska rather than the Middle East fascinating.

The audio version I have is read by Peter Reigert [who played Boone in Animal House] who has a great voice for it. Very enjoyable story once it really gets going. Hope you enjoy it when you get to it CR!

It's next in line after I finish Water for Elephants! I have to plan out my audio books by how I get them from the library and if they can be renewed. Most of them have waiting lists and you never know which will come in first! Some might have a bigger list but also the library system may have more copies! And I end up getting them faster. As an example, when I reserved A Thousand Splending Suns I was #66 on the list - I think I am #28 now! Its been about 2-3 months since I put it on my list.

I have a book The Water's Lovely by Ruth Rendell that I just keep renewing as I get others that have to be read. If there is no waiting list you can renew over and over. If there is a list you have to return in the allotted time - 3 weeks I think.

I actually have 4 audio books in the car right now and just got notificaiton that No Country for Old Men is ready for pickup. The Ruth Rendell book keeps sliding to the back of the pack! I'llpick up the new book and drop of 20th Century Ghosts in a few days. When you reserve they usually give you 1-2 weeks to actually go and pick them up before they put them back in circulation.

I listen only on comute days - M to F - but I sometimes work from home - and I drive about 75 minutes each way so I get through 2+ CDs per each day that I drive to work!

I've never made a "goals list" for books. I've been keeping tracks of books throughout the year as I read them. So I guess I do it backwards.

Here are some I'd like to read, though:

Augustine "City of God"
Paul Tillich "Dynamics of Faith"
Harry Potter 5-7 (I've read the first three and am halfway through 4 to this point)
"Dark Tower" of course - wife and I are nearly finished with the first book.

That's it from off the top of my head, although I usually end up reading somewhere between 50-60 books each year.

CR, I am also reading No Country right now, though not on audio. I wonder if the issue I am having wouldn't be an issue on audio. I love the story so I will finish it, but I think McCarthy writes like a third grader. For example, he apparently does not believe in quotation marks when there is dialogue. If it wasn't such a good story I'd have put it down 100 pages ago, but I wonder if that isn't such an issue in the audio version.

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, by Ray Bradbury (currently reading)

STARDUST, by Neil Gaiman
FIGHT CLUB, by Chuck Palahniuk
DUMA KEY, by Stephen King
THE SANDMAN, VOL. VI, by Neil Gaiman
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN by Cormac McCarthy
THE SANDMAN, VOL. V - A GAME OF YOU, by Neil Gaiman
NEVERWHERE by Neil Gaiman
THE PLANT, by Stephen King
DHARMA BUMS, by Jack Kerouac

Books I'm thinking about reading in 2008:

IT by Stephen King - I hear it's good.
Some of those Harry Potter books everyone's always yammering on about.
More Neil Gaiman. I  him.
A few more of those books that we all hear are classics but that I haven't actually read.
Koontz's next Odd Thomas book which is supposed to come out in May.
Other Stephen King stuff that I haven't gotten to yet, like INSOMNIA.
Whatever else strikes my fancy at the time.

Updated.

How many languages do you know Jean???
depends on what we call "know". I have no problems with English or French, and can more or express myself in German and Italian, but these two could do with some enhancing (which I am now trying to do with my German); I know some Spanish enough to understand both spoken and written speech, but I would be pathetic trying to express my thoughts at a, say, Jorge Luis Borges Spanish-speaking site; am learning Japanese now, but it's the hardest for me, because of the hieroglyphs - bears can't rely on their vision, you know, and fail at anything visual. I also understand (though do not speak and wouldn't venture to write) some languages related to those I know (for example, Swedish/Dutch/Norwegian for German group, Portuguese for Roman, or Polish/Czech/Ukranian for Slavic), but I don't know anything about Celtic group, Hungarian/Finnish/Estonian, Hindi, Arabic, or a multitude of other languages, so there's still room for perfection! http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gif

I think audio books are great - I drive to and from work every day between 2 and three hours - its the most reading time I have. When I pick up a real book and read at night I tend to drift off and never seem to get anywhere!

I am trying to mix in classics with newer stuff. It's hard to find a lot of the older stuff that I want to re-read or read becausee I should have read it a long time ago anyway, but I keep trying - currently have two library cards one for my county and one for the county in which I work!

Used to be that two days after any King book was released I had finished it. not any more, although not for wanting to. I have only read about 30 pages of Duma Key, but am next i line to get the audio version at the Library - once I get that I will devour it in two to three CDs per day!

You seem to be a big Star Wars fan, Chris - are you going to going to pick up the game that's coming out > Star Wars : The Force Unleashed? I read that it's going to tie directly into the main storyline from the movies, and I think it takes place between episodes III and IV.
