I did get it from Hannes but I did not realize it came from your collection. That's nice to know! The 'Salem's Lot is a thing of beauty. I got the DJ from a 2nd(?) printing book that I purchased for $42, and I found a nice DJ-less first edition book to go with it for $100. I'm still extremely pleased with how that came together.

Nice collection Michael, love the traycase for the Dead Zone proof, never saw that before!

I bought that DZ proof and traycase from a seller on ABE years ago. The traycase was made by one of his relatives (mother-in-law, maybe). I think they were experimenting and just getting started in making traycases. I thought they did a really good job and you can tell it is one of a kind by the design on the front. Pretty sure it was Dawn Treader Bookshop, or something like that. I'm glad it has a good new home.

Wow Michaël, you've been a busy lad today haven't you ??? I really like the way you've set out the presentation of the proof/ARC's along with the 1st editions, specials, etc - way cool mate !!!

Out of curiosity, do you have both DJ states of the US trade 1st edition Pet Sematary ??

Thanks, Grant! I used an extremely low-tech approach (put the books on the floor, took photos with my iPhone). I noticed that the later pics got a little fuzzy and that must have been because it got a little cloudy outside). Anyway, because I was limited in terms of technology I thought I'd try something different regarding the presentation of the books. Glad you like it!

I do not own both Pet Sematary states. This is the '1982' DJ state. The other one is not high on my list of priorities (yet).

Thank you, Steve! The Carrie proof is pretty nice. It was recently listed on eBay (two times, no bidders, great price) so... I couldn't resist.

And my books (other items in our house as well) have been acting all weird ever since I came back from my visit to the Large Hadron Collider (CERN, Switzerland) a couple of months ago. So far it only seems to affect inanimate objects - my wife and our cat do not float around and stick to horizontal surfaces (yet!).

biomieg
08-17-2013, 03:15 AM
Thanks, Dez! I got my proofs from all over the place (TDT friends, eBay, ABE, Betts). I can't check it right now but there must be a Christine proof listed on ABE.

I have a bunch more but these are by far the most interesting ones. I used to have more scarce proofs (mostly UK) but I sold them along with 90% of my UK 1st editions. Stupid decision. At least I have something to hunt for again ;)

I'm not going to post everything I own, just the goodies. Next (but not today) are my pre-Carrie publications.

So, it's been a while since I posted anything here! I downsized my collection some, and below you'll see what I have left. I still have a bunch of items for sale that are not shown here (mostly magazines/anthologies) - I will post those in the Classifieds thread.

My current collection mostly consists of US 1st/1st trade editions and proofs, a couple of UK 1sts (the Big Ones plus assorted books with what I think is nice cover art), a small DT collection, a few gift editions, some 1st printing mass-market paperbacks, a few magazines and anthologies, some books about King and his work, and a few miscellaneous items.

I don't expect to add much to my collection in the foreseeable future except trade editions of new books, some of the older mass-market paperbacks and a couple of magazines from the 70s and 80s. And - if they come up for sale - I will be trying to get some of the missing proofs (Viking IT proof, a number of older UK proofs). I'd also like to add some S/L editions to my collection (again, mostly older stuff from the 80s) but it will take a while before I'm going to take that particular plunge.

Thank you all! It's a modest collection but I'm proud of it. Meagan: I lived all over the place (not difficult in such a small country). Grew up in the province of Zeeland (the Southwestern 'delta'), then moved to Wageningen, which is close to Nijmegen. From there I went to Utrecht (one of the nicest and most beautiful cities in NL) and now we live in Delft, another nice place sandwiched between Rotterdam and The Hague.

Thanks, all!

I'm happy to live in the Netherlands but I don't know if I'd call our country beautiful. Most cities have nice old 'downtown' parts and there are a few spots of nature left, scattered between farmland, industry and the 17 million people that live here ;) but as far as European countries go there are more beautiful places, IMO. But hey, 'the grass is always greener...', right?

I like the Netherlands, I've been there many times on extended business trips. (I was in Amsterdam about a month ago...) Also spent time in Nijmegen many years ago as I wrote some software for the University there.

I have always found the places I have visited very pleasant, as are the people who live and work there.

The past year or so I did not add anything to my collection other than trade 1st editions of King's latest books. Here's something a little more special: a UK Dolores Claiborne proof. I used to own another copy but this one is in unread condition, with minor wear along the edges (it smells a bit funky though!). I'm happy to add this to the collection! It looks a bit soiled in the pic but is actually nice and white.

Thanks, guys! Jon, I really have no idea. It's scarce in the sense that they hardly ever come up for sale but I think the veteran proof collectors here all own copies. But my totally uneducated guess is that there are probably not more than 15 copies or so around anymore.

Paul - you are probably right. I bought the copy that was listed on eBay recently (although it was sold to me through their bookstore website rather than eBay).

A particularly nice new addition because I love this book and I love early proofs. Not in perfect condition by any means but it's so scarce that I really don't care. I'm reading the book again for the unknownth time. The only book I may have read more is The Stand. I'm also listening to Frank Muller read for the first time while I'm reading along. I loved his Wolf voice, though it wasn't much like what I had in my head.

I need to get to the Netherlands someday. Some of my best friends (that I've never met in person) live in Baarn and in Amersfoort, and there really is a whole contingent of Dutch Raindogs (Tom Waits Fans) that love to get together and drink, sing, talk and carouse at the drop of a hat! Not that I'm much of a partier, but just being around that kind of energy is pretty beautiful.

Hopefully when plans finally materialize that get us there, we can take you out for a meal or a drink and talk SK!

That's a deal! Baarn and Amersfoort are close to Utrecht, which is my favorite city in NL. I lived there for six years and hope to move back one day. Would be nice to meet up over there.

Good question. My copy doesn't have the DJ. Congratulations on the new items!

I did not inspect it very closely but if I recall correctly (I have owned two other copies in the past, one of which had a proof DJ as well) it's a regular DJ cut to size. I will report back later when I get a chance to take a closer look.

I don't have a hardcover to compare it with at the moment but the DJ on the proof looks like it's a regular DJ cut to size - the title does not align on the spine at all (it crosses the fold to the back cover).

Congratulations Michaël! Up to what title were you collecting again?

Some time ago I decided that I would focus on US and UK proofs from The Dead Zone up to and including Insomnia. The reason being that trying to build a complete set of proofs is impossible (and therefore frustrating). I thought that these would make a nice set in the sense that one can obtain all of them for semi-reasonable prices and they cover most of the books that I grew up with so it's for nostalgic reasons as well. It's not a perfect set from an OCD perspective and I'm still leaving out some of the impossible ones like the Four Past Midnight variant and Gerald's Danse Macabre and Skeleton Crew UK proofs, but hey... it's the best I can do. I will be very happy once I get there! The hardest one is going to be the UK Tommyknockers I think...

By the way, we'll be moving to a new place in January and it looks like we'll have a small library/study room. I'll probably put up some updated pics of the collection 'when it's done'...

Over the past couple of months I've had the pleasure of working with a great seller to obtain some of the proofs I need for my collection. None of these are as exceptionally scarce as the things we're used to seeing from Bob and Gerald but they're far from common.

The first one is the UK IT proof. I had another copy a few years ago with a spine that was so faded it was almost white. Needless to say, this one is MUCH better!

http://www.thedarktower.org/custom/images/1448562177-ITUKproof.jpg

The second one is a proof that I never expected to find - but I did. I'll never own a Doubleday or NEL proof so this was basically my Holy Grail of the older proofs. I am super happy to have found a copy! The UK Dead Zone proof! It looks a bit washed out in this pic but it's not. Overall it's not in great condition but I don't care one bit. It took me a LONG time to find this one...

If I can find some this weekend I'll post better pics here in my collection thread, of the books together with their US counterparts and the trade editions.

Here are my Dead Zone trade editions (US 1st, UK 1st, UK 2nd) and proofs. I found it very interesting to notice the similarities between the proofs, even down to the material that was used for the wrappers (I think that's the word).

Wow. You have some truly awesome books there. You once said that it wasn't as "high end" as mine but I beg to differ. Those proofs are awesome. Some of these books I did not know even existed. Plus the picture of your book shelves are really impressive. Good stuff all around.

Thank you for the very nice compliments! We moved to a new place a couple of months ago and I still need to sort out my bookshelves but I'll take some new pics once the proverbial dust has settled. I'm not adding much to the collection right now, mostly trade editions of some of my other favourite authors.

I'm actually back in school at the age of 41 and the tuition fees are outrageous so I don't think I'll be adding many collectibles in the foreseeable future! Hopefully I'll be back in the game by the time I'm 50!

Hey Alan, here is a somewhat recent pic (you can't really see his face, but...). Julian just turned two and he's doing great! Except for the fact that two of the final four molars are surfacing right now and that has always been a BIG struggle for him so he's been quite moody for the past couple of weeks (and that's putting it mildly!). But other than that everything's fine. How is Holly doing?
