So I'm new to the world of more "serious" collecting. I've been a King fan for about a decade and over the years (like many, I'm sure) my collection began with soft covers and has shifted towards more serious collectors territory. The first King I read was a copy of Christine. I devoured it, and to this day it may be my favorite. I've read many better King novels, but it's nigh impossible to recapture the feeling you have as a young teenager being exposed to something you love for the very first time.

So the collection started with any and all copies I could find, specifically soft covers, I did not enjoy the feel of a bulky hard cover in my hands. My how things have changed. Once I had all of the regular print books, it started to look good on a shelf and I thought to myself..."You know, hard covers would probably look a lot nicer than all those beat up paperbacks". That was that, I made a full shift to hardcovers.

Then it was trying to get firsts. Now, it's trying to get gifts and S/L editions. Most of my hard covers aren't firsts yet, but I'm working on that, and I've lucked into some neat items over the years.

Got into Joe Hill fairly early, after he'd only published 20th Century Ghosts and Heart Shaped Box. Met him for a signing in Toronto, and then I got on the Owen King bandwagon more recently with his publication of Double Feature. I've chatted with him via twitter and even received mail from Owen on one occasion.

So without further gilding the lily and with no more ado, I give you my modest collection.

Over view of the book shelf. Yes, I know I should not stack them like this, I'm working on getting more space soon.

And onto the cooler stuff...

What I got in the mail from Owen :

Lastly, I dabble in art a little bit and I'm no Glenn Chadbourne (though, there's some talk we may be related, but that's wild speculation), but here's a Christine painting I've been working on this last week:

That's it so far! But I have some more coming in the mail, and my bank account makes me want to weep tears of blood. So I'm relaxing for a little while. Thank you for looking!

LOL I hear ya, but then again he is down to like one or two "original" novels a year at this time. Problem is all the "Anniversary's" are now popping up!!! LOL LOL It's the "Reissues" that will kill the old pocketbook!! LOL

They look a heck of a lot better in person I might add, all vintage paperbacks in new unread condition, colourful Corgi edition pocket books. I think they ended up costing me about 75 cents a piece.

Thanks for the kind words Jon, I have to confess that all of those inscribed books were from early in my collecting days and I didn't realize how having my name on them might ruin some of their value. I was under the impression that the more ink spilled by the author the better, now I know better. That being said, I'm quite pleased to have them none the less. Thanks for your help with the new additions!

No problem.
One day I would love to have a personally inscribed book by Joe Hill or Stephen King, which may not appeal to other collectors being inscribed to me. If I did own one, I would not trade it for a flat-signed book. The sentimental value would far outweigh any monetary value.

Fill us in!

Alright, alright. I had planned to make a post telling the whole story including lots of photos, but the photos are at home and I suppose I can tell the story now and share the photos later, so here we are:

I found an ad on Kijiji here in Ontario for a large lot, someones entire collection. Specifically the bookshelf worth of books you saw above. Now I noticed the Grant edition of The Gunslinger as well as The Drawing of the Three and immediately contacted him. I did ask him point blank if it was a first edition first printing, and he someone reluctantly said that yes it was and that "They're all original, I bought them and read them once" - his general tone was of a casual collector, someone who loved King but who didn't seem to have knowledge of the "collector" oriented details - such as first vs second editions.

So that being said, I knew I was shooting in the dark. A quick check on Stephen King Collector and I found out the production run was the same for the 1st and 2nd from Grant (10'000 each). I figured, what the hell, it's a coin toss right? Not to mention the fact that I've only ever seen one Grant copy of the Gunslinger before, and it's the one I bought, completely ripped and taped up and signed (by the owner, not king) so I thought it would be an upgrade regardless.

Here's the catch, the guy was three hours away. So that's a six hour round trip and a 50/50 chance that it's a 1st 1st... I didn't *really* want to ask him to check the fine print for fear of him getting curious why I was being so nosy about that ONE book in his collection and hopping on eBay to find out. So I said screw it, talked the girlfriend into a Sunday road trip, and drove out to no-where Ontario.

Not a bad drive, all highway and only one tank of gas. Get there and he lives down a dirt road that looks like it should end in a creepy mansion or a murder shack, turns out there are a few homes of mostly retiree's. Guy was friendly older man, arms covered in tattoos, and the first thing he says when I get there "I forgot to mention, I lent out my copy of Gunslinger a while back".

My heart sank.

But then he lead me into the room with the book shelf, and there it was, just like in the photo. He continued "So this one is a little different than the other one I had, this is an ex-library book, I totally forgot to mention it when you asked".

Talk about a roller coaster of emotions. One moment he has it, then it's gone, then he has it again but it's a library book. Sadness, happiness, finally followed by...apathy? I didn't really know how to feel. Mostly I was confused, I couldn't really tell if he was trying to fleece me or just generally an old guy who didn't really know what he had and who had forgotten. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and had a look.

Now here's where I would plug all the photos in, and maybe I'll edit them in tonight when I get home. It was wrapped in a Brodart-esque mylar dust jacket, as you would expect from a library book, that was almost white from micro scratches and plastic fade. It was really hard to tell how the dust jacket looked underneath but it seemed to be holding up alright. There was some residue on the end pages from where the sign-in/sign-out sheet should have been, but it was removed. There was also a number stamped on the top right corner of the end page. Lastly there was the name of the library stamped on the top and bottom of the pages. The library plastic jacket was also taped to the boards.

We had a conversation about money at that point. I explained that I had asked him on the phone because I was a collector and wanted it for my own collection, and the fact that it was a library book definitely changed things. I changed my offer on the whole collection based on what I knew, and he countered with a bit more. I stuck to my guns and reiterated that I had driven a long way for these. He agreed to my new offer.

However! The Grant edition of The Drawing of the Three was in fact a first edition, in excellent shape, and not a library book. I packed up the whole collection (55 books, give or take) and he handed me a bunch of other odds and ends he had picked up over the years, THOSE turned out to be pretty interesting but I'll share more when I have photos. Nothing super rare, but lots of little additions to the collection that I didn't already own.

I love the stories man.. I really do. I once drove an hour and a half for some books. LOL Not as far but at least you got something. I found her on Kjiji and she had a King collection she was selling. I got there and she wasnt home but I could see all the books by her door and it was tough to tell but there looked to be a Carrie, Stand and SHinning there.. I was losing it as we had came to a price of like $90 for the lot. I had to head back to the city but my parents were in the town near this woman. I asked her if she had bought them when they came out... ( like you , not wanting to elude that there could be value there) and she said yep. ANyways a week later my mother got the lot... paid for them... and they were all beat up (she told me they were mint and I could not quite tell through the curtain/window)... OH and they were ALL BCE's. haha I kept them all though.. and put them on a shelf away from my nice stuff. lol and if anyone asks to borrow a book... well I have no problem giving them one. haha

Nice story... I just happened to see your set of the Pratchett paperbacks... it brought back a flood of memories.. back in the day when I owned a bookstore, like 20+ years ago, Terry Pratchett did a signing there and he signed all the paperbacks that were published at the time. The same Corgi editions you have on the shelf... I should post them some time in my collection thread... They're all in boxes right now and would have to dig real deep to find them...

Couple of interesting things to note. It appears 95% of the books I picked up are first editions, it also looks as though he removed the dust jackets while reading them, so most of the DJ's are in great shape...while the books show wear from being read. I've spent a few hours listening to some records and Brodarting the collection, but I wanted to show of some of the items that I found interesting / that I didn't already own.

I had considered keeping that to myself, but I don't think it really matters, if anyone here is ever interested in buying or trading then I'm sure we'll work off what it's worth, not what was spent.

He initially wanted $275 for the collection. I had offered him $240 in the hopes that the Gunslinger was a better copy than it is, but upon seeing it was a library book I amended my offer to $180. He countered with $200 and I said $180 was what I was prepared to offer him. He accepted.

He initially wanted $275 for the collection. I had offered him $240 in the hopes that the Gunslinger was a better copy than it is, but upon seeing it was a library book I amended my offer to $180. He countered with $200 and I said $180 was what I was prepared to offer him. He accepted.

I think you did very well. I suspect in future you wont be satisfied with condition of some of those and will eventually spend more in replacing them but sold individually you will get way higher than the total paid. Plus, regardless of condition you now have a Gunslinger 1st! There are still many people here with extensive collections (as per Jon's example) that do not!

Sorry Jon, I wasn't rubbing it in, honest :)

Story time once again. Another local buy and sell collection buy, But this time with a signed copy. Seller sounded nice, 60 ish book collection, with a signed copy of On Writing. I did see a photo of the Sig and it looked good, so I made the trek out to buy the lot... again. This time it was an hour each way. Well, yeah, the lady forgot to inform me that her Fucking dog had gone to town on it. Yup. This is what I got;

Thankfully, I had another copy on hand, with a nice clean dust jacket... So I threw that on with some Brodart and it looks a hell of a lot more presentable;

And the collection had a few more books which I didn't already own;

And this is what I've picked up between the last haul and this one combined and shelved;

The lot I picked up today was $100, and it *doubled* my number of King signatures...

Thanks Zelig, I just saw your collection posts with your DT books and just about fell off my chair. That is a *phenomenal* collection sir. You're also right, I hadn't thought about it Cujo relating to bite marks, but that would have been perfect, that made me chuckle.

Ooooh nice! I always secretly wanted a collection with multiple 'identical' copies of each title. It's one of the reasons I love Bob's collection so much. It just looks awesome to have them all lined up (with the proofs neatly in between, just like Bob has them displayed). But I fear I won't be able to explain that to my wife. I did own three or four copies of UK The Stand (the original 1979 edition) at one time but that's the only time I got carried away a little...

The last few collections I bought (to get a few select pieces of said collection) we're pretty complete, so that's why there's three sets of each. Almost. I will be pairing them down, keeping the nicest copy of each. Makes for some trade bait as well. The more collectible versions I hope to pick up will bump most of these copies off the shelf eventually.

Your copy of Wastelands seems incredibly Black. I have seen a couple of others that look black as well. Mine and the majority of others I have seen for sale (including the image posted in the Catalog) is far more blue. Were there different variants for this or were the extra DJ's sold by Grant blacker?

Recent additions. I will be selling/trading the previous copies I have of these books as these new ones are all in better condition. Please feel free to make offers on my other copies of The Gunslinger,TDotT and Wastelands. Also, I know this has been discussed elsewhere, but for the sake of protecting the books and retaining value, should these be opened and brodarted, or left alone?

Congrats on the new additions.... Many collectors will say to remove the shrinkwrap. It has been known to stick to the cover over the years and thereby damage it... I'm one of those guys who generally does not remove shrink wrap. I have lots of books with the plastic still on...

I almost always remove the shrink wrap. The only exceptions are some of the UK limiteds that have additional information on the shrink wrap. Those, I carefully slit the wrap so I can inspect the book.

I agree with, John. I used to leave the shrink intact and then I learned that the shrink can actually degrade the book over time to a degree. Now I always open and inspect them and then brodart the DJ. I also try to slipcase them whenever I can.

Hello again all,

Been quite a long time since I bothered to update my collection thread. I've picked up a few very nice pieces since then, and some more run of the mill books as well. So here's another large update.

Picking up right where I left off, I have a few more copies of The Fireman, in various signed limited editions:

Cemetery Dance's bookplate edition, limited to 1500 and signed in gold:

https://i.imgur.com/Bay9AcV.jpg https://i.imgur.com/vtoAQ1k.jpg

UK First of Sleeping Beauties:

https://i.imgur.com/ku0nWEV.jpg

US First of Sleeping Beauties, in the Cemetery Dance slipcase - signed by both Stephen and Owen King. Picked this up at their Book Tour stop here in Toronto:

https://i.imgur.com/sfUTBXG.jpg?3

https://i.imgur.com/CE9ilCU.jpg https://i.imgur.com/hu5NRzn.jpg

I also realized I had never updated my collection thread with my signed and dedicated copy of Finders Keepers:

https://i.imgur.com/StOjwqI.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/lwdh4Ma.jpg?1

Lastly, this thread is also missing about 15 signed books which I purchased and later sold. Forum member Alec purchased the set so they can be seen in his collection thread. I will fiddle with this post to try and adjust image sizes, so if they're unreasonably large at the time you read this, my apologies in advance.

Best,
Chase

I rarely update this thread, but there's a bunch of things I've picked up in the last year. Photos aren't great, I'm not really trying to showcase things so much as document them -

First up, my new barrister bookcase. It's a Prestonia, made here in Canada. I was forced to move some books around so here's part of my collection hastily populating the new bookcase, in no significant order.

https://i.imgur.com/bfMouse.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/KdH24kn.jpg

Newest Signed King Book:

https://i.imgur.com/y1KZ12q.jpg https://i.imgur.com/alU9qYu.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/q2OtYCV.jpg

Another bookcase that's haphazardly populated with books. Clearly there's not enough space here, but I'm slowly working on adding an additional bookshelf. This is an issue I've had since I started collecting. One day I will have a proper library space.

https://i.imgur.com/71CHED9.jpg

Some Hill books;

That's all for now, until I get it into a better space and more organised.

A few fun editions to add to the collection. One came in the mail a few days ago and the others I picked up just today.

And then for today's items. These were all in a cheap Ikea frame when I purchased then - that I've already disposed of. I've order a few replacement simple black frames and these will soon be on display in my bookshelves:

https://i.imgur.com/UzGE9Bt.jpg?1

"Copyright 2002 Ronda Sheel" is hand written on the back, this is a 4x6 photograph, presumably from a Rock Bottom Remainders show?

https://i.imgur.com/leBTIEe.jpg?2

This is also a 4x6 photograph, with a postcard backing applied to stiffen it and presumably to convert it to an easily mailed postcard.

https://i.imgur.com/CrqjwX7.jpg?3

This 4x6 also has the postcard backing applied, with "The Stanley Hotel, Estess park CO" written on the rear.

And lastly, the reason I picked these up in the first place:

https://i.imgur.com/SuWRaPh.jpg?3

https://i.imgur.com/Tod8g5R.jpg?3

I wasn't familiar with these hand signed cards, but a quick google showed me some for sale online, so I suppose they're not all that rare? The woman I purchased these from said she wrote King hoping to get him to sign a book and this was sent back to her. Based on the text, it's clear this was mailed out by King in 2003, sometime after June 23rd but before the publication of the Wolves of the Calla.

If I remember, I'll post some updates once these are in their little frames.

I got some additional details from the seller, apparently the three 4x6 photos turned postcards actually came from Betts Books. She said her boyfriend knew she was a fan and picked them up for her. They've been re-framed but I'm still waiting on an acrylic frame for the Signed card from King before I post the new photos.

I will say, the little postcards look much nicer in a simple little frame. They're pretty plain images on their own (I actually really like the Rock n' Roll King image), but look smart in a frame next to some books.

Nice adds! Rhonda Sheel was a good friend of mine that I sadly lost touch with. She was a King fan/Collector from the Denver area and an excellent photographer and artist. The one of King and the guitar was most definitely from a Rock Bottom Remainders concert, I believe from about 2001...might even be the same one I went to with Rhonda and sat in the front row!

The Stanley Hotel postcards were a series she did and I think sold them through Betts Books. She even had some where she played with the colors making it a blood red sky background and added matts to the pictures for framing and signed and numbered them if I'm not mistaken. I have some buried in a box somewhere. Very nice to see that these are still floating around...brings back some very fond memories of hanging out with and talking to Rhonda.

I love the additional information! I found her old website, however it's no longer hosted - so I tried to look up old save states of the website to see if I could find out more information, sadly it looks like her website relies on Flash, so those cached pages wouldn't display anything and I couldn't dig up much at all.

I've reframed those images now, and I got a neat clear frame for the signed King card to showcase both sides. I'll try and post some photos later tonight.

@Kingfan2323 Hodder produced those for Halloween 2018 as a re-issue edition. They came as a box set, and sadly I don't have the box slipcase for mine.

They're very inexpensive though, if you happen to like them. Amazon has the box set for $35 USD (https://www.amazon.com/Stephen-King-Classic-Collection-Christine/dp/1529319730/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=stephen+king+halloween&qid=1579799817&s=books&sr=1-2http://)

I also read that Hodder produced more of these for Halloween 2019 - I've found a few examples online but can't find the new set as a boxed set, so I wonder if they were only released individually?

If anyone knows of a boxed set for the 2019 editions, I'd love to know!

I've recently picked up a few interesting books, and while putting them on my shelves I realized I had a few books I simply hadn't shared before. So here we go!

"The Year's Finest Fantasy Volume 2"

https://imgur.com/4LrqIqQ.jpg?1

This anthology from 1979 includes "The Gunslinger", and was the first time that short story was reprinted after it's initial magazine publication.

In much in the same vein, here's a copy of "The Poems of Robert Browing" which includes " 'Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came".

https://i.imgur.com/pw0hrwz.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/Xkd9GhY.jpg?1

Keeping with The Dark Tower theme, I picked up a hardcover edition of The Gunslinger produced by Amereon House. I like this way more than I should. Way more.

https://i.imgur.com/hxAFVHy.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/Wpau0Is.jpg?1

I've also started my collection of Dark Tower Artist Gift editions from Grant. Starting at the end (of course) with DT VII

https://i.imgur.com/YHIvTgf.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/vci0UY0.jpg?1

Getting away from The Dark Tower theme for a minute, here are a few I've owned for a number of years but never shared here.

The Secretary of Dreams Volume One

https://i.imgur.com/CL8DCH7.jpg?1

And lastly a copy of Stigmata from Cocytus Press (Centipede)

https://i.imgur.com/R9Kl1IH.jpg?1

Should have a few more to share in the coming weeks.

Hello again Alec!

Amereon Press appears to have purchased the 2003 Plume trade editions of The Gunslinger and rebound them in a "Special Edition" hardcover. I could find very little about Amereon House / Amereon Press, and it's unknown to me how many of these were produced.

I say that I enjoy it more than I should because it's simply a rebinding of an inexpensive edition. That said, I recalled seeing it somewhere online in years past and it was like...a splinter in my mind. I couldn't remember who produced it, and it drove me crazy for a short while. When I finally sussed out the name of the publisher, I felt very vindicated.

There was an "A HA! I knew there was someone other than Grant or Viking who made a hardcover! I knew it!!" moment.

Then I was on the hunt for it. I called many small book stores in the US who had it listed on their site, apparently because it's a rebound edition there are some wonky ISBN numbers for it and it's often falsely stated that it was published in 76. Despite being listed, none of these stores had copies available. I tried...15+ stores to no avail.

In the end I bought my copy off another member here, one of only two members who appears to own one. I messaged both members, one replied, and that's the copy you see there.

(edit : seem to be a way : https://www.bbcode.org/examples/?id=10 )

There is a "RESIZE" code. It reduces each dimension of the original picture by a percentage. If you wanted to reduce the dimension by 50% you would use this code without the spaces.
[ resize="50"][ img]Image URL here[ /IMG][ /RESIZE]

Here is a sample. The first image is full size. The second is 75%. The third 50%. The forth 25%.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/20201023_130446.jpg

The site automatically reduced the original picture. That is why the ratio to the others doesn't appear to be correct.

Love seeing your comments Alec!

I may never have the funds that some members do for the most prestigious, rare, or collectible books - so I'm carving out my own niche of weird, wacky, and unusual instead, haha.

This is not an ultra-rare or highly sought-after edition. It's a custom print job that I had done. It's almost a 100% clone of another custom print that another collector put together. But I had the text on the spine done in a different colour. I suppose you could say it's a 1 of 1 (or 1 of 2).

Technically, it may be an illegal reproduction. But it was not mass-produced, it is not for resale, and I'll never make false claims about its origins.

I have the files I used to have it printed, but as I did not assemble them myself, I wouldn't feel right about sharing them.

A bit of context, Christine was the first King novel I ever read and this edition has been essentially at the top of my list since I discovered it. I was able to buy this through a fellow DarkTower.org member (Thank you!) - and through the help of another member, was able to source a new replacement dust jacket to complete it. It took a little doing, but I'm thrilled with the result.

A shout out to the seller who included a surprise audio book version of Christine and a kind note:

Nice pictures.
How do you get them to come out in such a large format?

Are they still too large? I mostly browse this site on mobile so I never know how things are displaying on a desktop web browser.

I just take cellphone photos, which are inherently large > upload them to imgur > copy the url of the photos > use the image link tool and paste them in > adjust the size using img link here . There aren't two z's in resize, but if I type it normally then it's treated as an html tag and I can't show it to you as text.

I hope that helps. If you go back in this thread the process on resizing was explained by others.

ur2ndbiggestfan

No, they are NOT too large! I like the larger size because it shows more detail and seems to be a much sharper image.
I also use imgur, so I must look up that resizing option.

The "Doubleday Employee Book Sale" stamp gave me pause, and I'm sure there are some opinions on how it effects the value - but seeing as the stamp is direct from the publisher, I'm okay with it. Anyone else have a Doubleday book stamped like this?

I have a book stamped from the Doubleday Library but I can't remember which one it is!
I think it's a King title though.

Is it just me, or is the gold outline on the cover misaligned?

You're both correct. The title isn't properly aligned, the spine is bumped a bit on both the top and bottom as well. The seller also did not disclose that this was a rebound paperback edition (unlike the rebound trade edition I got from Amereon House previously) so it's smaller than expected. Just weird all around. I've requested a partial refund. I may order another from a different seller and hope it's in better condition.
