?

There wa s a flood at the warehouse before the book was released destroying or at least damaging most of the copies, then during the shipping of the salvageable copies there was a fire at the warehouse that destroyed the copies that hadn't yet shipped.

I just watched The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler the other night, love them both! Darren McGavin was awesome in those, his performance in the first one particularly had that perfect amount of levity. Someone were to do a remake, I know they had the tv series a few years back, but I am thinking a faithful to the original character remake Brian Cranstan would be perfect!

UNKOWN I do know studios do a lot of research on titles & they maybe just felt SOMEWHERE IN TIME was just a better title. Then due to the CULT status of the movie DON'T FUCK WITH A WINNER

I've been obtaining a whole bunch of new Matheson books and will start to catalog and photograph them. I got this is mail today. Stephen King books are fairly easy to obtain information regarding first editions and identifying them, but other authors are a little more difficult.

Richard Matheson's final work, unless some lost works are found later on. Actually, I believe that he left several partial novels unfinished in his papers.

Nice collections! Matheson is an author that I've been curious about but haven't had a chance to read yet. I did love both "I Am Legend" and "Somewhere In Time" (although I never realized he wrote that), so I'm definitely keeping my eyes open for some of his work to check out.

Matheson is one of those authors that can write in any genre. Somewhere in Time is a love story, and a good one. Be sure to check out his westerns, they are good also.

What is most likely the final S/L from Richard Matheson. You will notice the limitation page is different from the name of the book. I received the following email from Barry Hoffman at Gauntlet Press.

Richard passed away before he could "initial" the tipsheets for the book. So, we used a tipsheet from another book and as a bonus you get his full signature rather than just his initials. The number is correct. These were extra tipsheets from the other book. We numbered them 1-100 (that's the reason for the low print run for this edition). The value, if anything, is enhanced because you got a Matheson signature not just his initials like with OTHER KINGDOMS. Matheson had a severe write condition the past few years so he would only initial the numbered editions.

Hmm. I'd almost prefer the book not have a signature page than have one with the wrong title on it. What's your take on it, Dan -- pleased or disappointed?

It's a bit moot for me, as I probably won't get this one. I have nearly all his works, but skipped the last few "trunk novels" after getting burned in recent times by HUNGER AND THIRST and OTHER KINGDOMS, though GENERATIONS does have me intrigued, so I may pick up that one.

I have that S/L of I AM LEGEND as well. I'm surprised to hear that value has gone down (or is shaky)...I would've thought the value of that would have stayed high and stable, given its seminal stature and is, I believe, the only signed/limited of that particular work. I know the whole collectible small-press market has been kinda soft lately, but I would've thought that one would have been less prone to that softness than many others. Oh well, doesn't matter in my case...that volume would certainly be among the very last sold of my collection.

Another fantastic bargain (I believe): a lettered copy of Matheson's Darker Places in mint condition for $99.95! The quality and workmanship on this is awesome, and it includes a hand-signed copy of a manuscript page from one of the stories The Hill in the traycase as well. The picture of the manuscript page makes it look darker then it is.

Very nice, Dan. I have a signed trade HC of that one. Not sure why, but the yellow of the spine on it has faded some...and I'm very careful about keeping my books out of direct (or even indirect'ish) light, so not sure what to chalk that up to. Maybe it's just the photo, but it looks like perhaps your limited has suffered the same. Mine used to have that deep rich yellow color that your trade shows; now it's more washed out, less golden in hue.

Dan
01-23-2016, 06:17 AM
I thought the same thing, but the color is the same on the entire dust jacket, including the inside flap. Bruce might have better insight, but both of my copies look like the dust jackets are brand new but just slightly different colors.

Does yours look like fading or are they the same on the inside flap?

Yes, mine is definitely similar to the above photo ^^^ -- golden everywhere but the spine, which has that same faded look. In fact, I'd say that my spine is even more washed out than the above. Looks like it's indeed the nature of the beast; too bad, the cheap ink mars an otherwise nice production.

Ok. Mine does have a slight amount of spine fading on the SL version. Another note of interest is that the trade version has blank interior flaps. Is this the case with your version? That DJ is also noticeably darker orange with not even a slight amount of fading to the spine.

Do you have BORN OF MAN AND WOMAN, the 1st HC? That's a missing Holy Grail of mine. Tough to find them in decent condition, given water damage wiped out much of the stock prior to release. That one and the lettered chapbook signed by both Matheson and Vincent Price (THROUGH CHANNELS...I think) are ones I'd sure love to have in my Matheson collection. I almost had the chapbook...I remember when it came out back in '88 and I went back and forth about which to get, and then I cheaped out and went with the numbered. Oh well, live and learn.

I didn't care for OTHER KINGDOMS. It wasn't as bad as HUNGER AND THIRST, but it was a disappointment (as most of his Gauntlet trunk novels have been, unfortunately).

It's certainly not to everyone's taste. I actually really liked it and have read it three times.

Yes, he's helping keep the page from flipping back over. It looks better than my ugly fingers sticking out.

If I were for some reason told that I had to winnow my library of nearly 3000 volumes down to ten, my S/L HC of Matheson's COLLECTED STORIES would be one of those preserved. Absolutely wonderful collection, and a point of pride in my collection.

Come to think of it, since it's one of my favorite novels of all time, my S/L HC of I AM LEGEND would also be one of those ten.

Are the Gauntless Press editions of Matheson's books any good? From what I have seen they are bonded leather with a signature in them. Just curious on the quality and value.

I recently got this back from the framers. I'm quite pleased with it.

I found it on eBay. The frame cost more than both the items in the frame. It was cool to match the excerpt in a copy of the book. I wish I new the circumstances of his writing this.

Thanks for posting the close-up; that was a great find at eBay, and one I'm sad I missed, but I'm glad it went to a good, appreciative home.

Too bad we don't know the story behind it...sure would be interesting to know.

I'm not sure either but Cold Tonnage has had that copy listed for quite a while. I get his online catalogs and it has been listed in at least the last three catalogs. Nice book but, like you, I'm not sure about the price.

Even though I already had all the individual chapbooks, I had to get one of these also. Originally only supposed to be 12, but the website says 18. It also supposed to have 7 signed chapbooks and the signed cover, but mine has 8 signed chapbooks and the signed cover.

Keep an eye on the folio sociey website on 3rd May - a new edition of I AM LEGEND is to be released as part of their summer collection

There will be both standard and limited edition versions, with artwork by Dave McKean.
The limited edition will be leatherbound and includes a signed print - and is limited to to just 295 copies.

I will post the links with more info once they appear on http://www.foliosociety.com/

The limited edition- while looking pretty sweet- is a tough sell at $400- unsigned, obviously, by the author. Not that that's ever the most important thing for me. The importance is the beauty of the book. But- then keep the price commensurate with an unsigned edition, no matter how nice. That's awkwardly expressed, but I think you know what I mean.

I'll stick with my signed (by Matheson) and numbered slipcased HC from Gauntlet Press. Folio puts out some handsome volumes, but I agree that limited price is kinda stiff for what it is.

How is the Gauntlet version? Never bought anything from them but the book looked bland to me.

It’s nice…not Centipede Press nice, but nice. Boards are covered in textured red leather, and it’s in a black textured leather slipcase. Gold gilt embossing on spine. No interior illustrations, but overall nicely produced and bound.
