I am unable to calculate the time!

time zones have always been my undoing... like the rest of astronomy, by the way... it's out of the question that I understand how UTC is related to GMT in summertime... I found UTC in wiki and they say it's 6:30 UTC now, but elsewhere they say that UTC is basically the same as GMT, and I know that it's only 7:30 in London...

it's hardly appropriate for this thread, though... I'll re-post it in I Need Help when we're closer to the Eclipse, or maybe someone can start a special Eclipse thread in Dixie Pig? it's not every day that we have Eclipses!

I wanted to post this here too in case some of you don't keep up on the "Spam and Spammers" thread.

Horrible SPAM is gripping popular message boards on the internet these days. Conventional methods like putting a math problem on the registration page works on automated bots, but now it's actual people.

Which is why I went to the next step. I have just installed a product called...

vbStopForumSpam

This new SPAM has caused such a problem with forum owners that some have opted to block IP address from entire countries!! :wtf:

We haven't gone that far but this new product is going to be in the registration process. It stops registration long enough (few seconds) to poll an outside database for their IP, email and username. The database itself is housed at StopForumSPam.com and is added to by forum owners all over the world.

A log is kept so we will be able to see who it refused entry to and reach out to any that seem to be a mistake, but from what I have read, this seems to work pretty well.

If StopForumSpam.com is down for some reason, it allows the registration. So we are still going to be cleaning up a little. The goal is to catch them before they get here.

If some slip past, we will be reporting them back to the database to help fill it.

All other SPAM measures will stay in place as it looks like a layered approach has the best success.

You guys actually don't see much of the SPAM because Roland hides it from the site when he catches it. You would not believe the amount of hard core stuff the staff has to deal with every day. Its really causing a useless suck on human resources to battle it.

The product was turned on at 9:15 EST 10/4/08. We may still have a few lurking but its already stopped seven SPAM sigons from joining the site. :rock:

Hey, I'm posting here to make an announcement because on another thread we have been throwing around the idea of staring a book club on here. It was actually originally Razz's idea, but a lot of people seemed to like it, so we want to start it. We just have a lot of preparations to make. First and foremost we have to find a leader. Some one who is active and willing to run this thing. Preferably someone who has been in a book club before, or just knows how they work. If you are interested please post or message someone.

wow. nice research matt. i'm impressed that it's working already and appreciate that you found something to add to the defensive parameter. personally, i don't want to see, or even know, about some of the hardcore stuff you guys have to deal with on a daily basis. i saw one spam entry that fits that definition and that was more than enough.

Matt, DBF said there is some software out there too that he is going to send me a link to. It catches the spammers who don't do what "normal" posters do - go from the main forum to a thread to post. A lot of spammers bypass all that and go directly to a thread, and apparently this stuff stops that cold. I just bugged him again tonight to send me the info, so hopefully he will. He's using it on his site and he says it's basically stopped the spam.

Through the end of the month we are temporarily increasing the size limit on Avatars.
The test limit is 200x200 pixels.
Please save your old small avatar in case we decide to go back to the 100x100 parameter.
Hopefully all will go well and we can keep the larger size!

I did not add/edit the proper 'Usergroups' for members. It should work now, keeping in mind that 200 pixels is the max size for both width and height-meaning if you have a 'portrait' (taller than wide) image, it might be 200 pixels tall, but only 150 pixels wide.

You know, I read in the site moving plea thread that we're testing new avs to see if maybe we will keep them, as long as they don't slow down load page times. TBH, although bigger avs WOULD be nice, I'd rather have bigger sig banners, like a 700x200. IDK, that's just me. Maybe you could do a poll about that. Also, the avatars get hosted here, whereas banners have to be hosted elsewhere, so wouldn't the bigger avs slow down page load times more than banners that are hosted at photo hosting sites, or such? Again, not a computer expert. Just my 2 cents.
