Just off the top of my head and in no particular order:

Liar Liar
Bruce Almighty
Spaceballs
Loaded Weapon 1
Robin Hood Men in Tights
The Princess Bride
Hot Shots
Major League
Airplane
Naked Gun Trilogy
Click
The Family Man
Rocky IV
Office Space
Toy Story Trilogy
Aladin
Army of Darkness
Shawshank Redemption
Stand By Me
The Crow
Lost Boys
Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey
Christmas Vacation
A Christmas Story
The Santa Clause Trilogy

It’s a little more than 25 with the trilogies thrown in. It’s pretty heavy on comedies since typically my idea of a good movie is one that makes me laugh. Even the one horror movie I threw in is more of a horror/comedy.

Honorable mentions:

Police Academy franchise
Star Wars franchise
Blade trilogy
LOTR trilogy
Back to the Future Trilogy
Billy Madison
Happy Gilmore
Monster’s Inc
The Incredibles
The Pursuit of Happyness
The rest of the Rocky movies

Ugh ... Mulholland Drive. A movie so insane that not even the director knows what it's about.

I WILL say that it has a couple of great scenes. Especially the Club Silencio scene. Tears, every time. And i don't even know why. Lol

Mulholland Dr. is an amazing movie. The atmosphere that permeates just about every scene in the film is amazing. It's a cousin of sorts to Inland Empire.

Ah, I do love some insanity in my films. (Another reason why I love Life on Mars so much. Hint, hint.)

In no particular order (with the exception of the first 3), here's the top 25 that spring to mind. I'll expect this to change over the coming months.

I don't think I will ever understand the love for Blade Runner.

DoctorDodge

It took a couple of gos for me to "get" it, but once I did, I really began to like it, before subsequently loving it. I think the biggest problem with the film is, nine times out of ten, people expect an action scifi fest like Star Wars or other such films, maybe due to the way it's advertised or the way it's incredibly hyped up. That was definitely my problem when I first saw it, I think. The first time, it was ruined by expecting something it wasn't, the second, I knew what to expect, and took it as it was.

I don't think I will ever understand the love for Blade Runner.

I adore that film, but I can defintely see where it can receive polarizing views. I guess the general consensus is that sci-fi films are usually loud and flashy and overly saturated with special effects and outlandish characters. But BR is a stark contrast - slow, plodding, methodical, dark in both tone in and story, relatively light on action but allegorical in nature. It also laid the ground work for many cyberpunk tropes that we take for granted today.

DD - no Bridge on the River Kwai? Delicatessen? And do you think Chinatown is better than The Tenant (or Cul-de-Sac)? I am not even asking what films like The Thing or 28 Days Later are doing on a top 25 (not top 250) list, because I understand that everyone has their own little weaknesses...

Love your top 3... high time I revised my own list...

I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? before watching Blade Runner, so I'm sure that had something to do with my opinion. I really liked the novel, but the film adaptation was just so off in terms of following the book that I didn't really care for it. I felt that BR was trying too hard to be futuristic whereas the novel was more subtle and "real."

Yeah, I try to view the novel and the film as two seperate entities. I love both the novel and the film for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, but they are vastly different in many ways. Same with A Clockwork Orange and The Shining. Different facets of a central theme.

Ricky
03-16-2012, 11:52 AM
I do as well, but sometimes it's hard not to compare the two...especially when one medium is vastly more entertaining than the other (book, film, etc.). There are definitely cases where both written source material and film are able to stand successfully on their own, though. Just look at what Nolan did with The Prestige. It couldn't be MORE different from the novel, but it's fantastic in its own right.

Oh, i had forgotten Bridge and Delicatessen. Chinatown is a preference I have over The Tenant and Cul-de-Sac, as I just love the film noir style of it, but as for a few of the others...for the moment, consider it a list of "Favourite 25 films I've watched more than once". I will eventually revise it once I'm more sure, but most of the top 10, certainly the top 3, those I'm certain of having in my top 25 list.

Seriously, like feev said, great lists, guys. Nice to have a good idea of what boardmembers tastes are like. Pretty wide, it has to be said.

Quick question though, Shannon: no Life on Mars on your top tv list?! :P

You and I seem to have a very similar taste in movies. Why Batman Begins and not The Dark Knight?

The Road Virus
03-21-2012, 03:18 PM
I was just so much more addicted to it/ have seen it so many more times first off. But I like it more because of the story/plot. It's Batman's roots, a side that was never shown in any of the previous movies, and I like to see him becoming Batman. It's an awesome flick and I'm glad you also have good taste in movies and are at least one person who likes BB > TDK

Ive visited here a couple of times and tho there is NO WAY I could make a list of only 25 I will say that Fargo would probably be on my list but I dont see anyone else mentioning it. Am I the only one that thinks that movie is awesome?

I love Fargo, but it's not anywhere near my top 25. It's not even my favorite Coen Brothers film.

pathoftheturtle

Not my favorite Coen Brothers' either. It is one, however, of those things, in fact, that is, for me, the one on the list that I always forget somehow, (which is ironic since it is, like, THE big hit in the popular mind) but when I'm reminded, I am always all, "Oh, yeah! Damn, that's another terrific movie!"

How about if I just do my top 25 in each of 25 groups? :sweat_002:

I did (a very long time ago) almost the same as divemaster did: top 50 (I think the thread was called 50 Favorite Movies back then) films whose language is English, plus top 50 "other language" films; other, that is, except Russian, that could make yet another top 50 if there was any chance anyone here has seen any of those films. Another thing is that I did it in the pre-historic times and both my lists have to be reviewed.

It's at the top of my queue! I just turned in the Fringe disc this morning so it should ship out tomorrow and arrive at my place Saturday morning.

I hope you guys know how embarassing this is for me. I've always prided myself in being a diehard Park fan and now to find out that there's a film of his I haven't seen yet, well quite frankly I'm a bit heartbroken  ...

It'll be interesting to see what you think of I'm a Cyborg But That's Ok. I am a huge fan of Korean cinema, but Chan Wook Park (and Ki-duk Kim for that matter) are rather hit-or-miss for me. I thought Cyborg was a total miss--didn't care for it at all. 3-Iron was one of Kim's that I actually did enjoy, though not as much as Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring. Most of Kim's other films I've seen I've not only disliked, but actively hated.

To be brutally honest I've loved every single Chan-wook Park I've seen. (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Lady Vengeance, Thirst). They're just so damn ... bizarre and unconventional, they fascinate me.

I was watching a subtitled film seminar he gave in Korea about his experiences and how the tragic events in his life inspired his work and his style. It was amazing.

Same for me. I'm A Cyborg But That's Ok is completely different from his other works which I adore. My love for Cyborg is different too. It is just so bizarre and beautiful. I would hug that movie if it was possible.

Kim ki-duk. He is another story. And Shizzie, after you see 3-Iron/Bin-jip, I would like to know what you think about him.

And I thought I was the only person who loved Vanilla Sky, very underrated movie. I'll give this list some serious thought, and post a list now. Then I'll be curious to see if it changes after my year long excusion through the history of film.

3. The Pianist
4. Almost Famous
5. As Good As It Gets
6. The Royal Tenenbaums
7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
8. The Godfather
9. Matchstick Men
10. I Love You, Man
11. Donnie Darko
12. The Shining
13. 28 Days Later
14. Frailty

19. Mystic River
20. About Schmidt

My own Top 30 doesn't look like that anymore, but it's been over five years. I've been working on annual Top 30 lists and as I've posted somewhere else, I've managed to do that now for every year from 1970 to 2018: https://letterboxd.com/maemiddleton/lists/by/name/

Watchmen is prob the only one on my list that has scenes that makes me roll my eyes but still pops up as one of my faves. I even prefer the Ultimate Cut that adds the whole animated Black Freighter saga. For whatever reason, I just love the movie

Godfather is the shit and I love it (and G2). I love how many iconic moments it has and I love referring to it for life advice. I love canolis more than guns. But I saw Goodfellas first when I was younger, so that one really resonated more. And godfather takes itself so seriously compared to Goodfellas (and sopranos). I like the lighter approach more, leads me to more rewatches. (Honorable mention to Heat btw - outstanding movie)

T2 was a real game changer for me. First movie I ever saw that had that “event” like electricity in the theater. First R rated in a theater (I think). First movie we had to game plan for bc it kept selling out. And in the 80s I really didn’t go for the action flicks. Zero interest in die hard or Rambo or Arnold. Then I saw T2 and was like “wait, these movies are actually good? I thought it was just special effects.” Gamechanger
