So, what's the weather like where you are?

Today we are expecting 3-6 inches of snow.

Sunday we are expecting a nor'easter with snow fall total above a foot! :panic:

I am supposed to be having my family Christmas party Sunday...don't think that's gonna happen. I hope I still have power!! LOL

So, tell me your weather!!

yesterday I got caught in the wickedest (and suddenest) snowstorm of this whole winter, had to walk about a mile along the Nevsky prospect (picture below) with my glasses all covered in a thick layer of snow... in this post (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showpost.php?p=124360&postcount=151) I tried to get across that ghost-like quality of my city; now imagine it behind an almost opaque curtain of snow...

The middle of last week was beautiful temperature-wise, which helped a lot of the snow melt off. However, we got it all back over the weekend for a total of 7.2", and today is downright chilly again. Currently 15 degrees, high of 40. We'll see about that. I, for one, am doubting we see anything that warm today.

Girlystevedave

It's sunny, but only about 50 degrees outside. I'm freaking freezing because I work for a cheapo who turns off every bit of heat over the weekend.
When the temp reaches 55, he'll probably find it appropriate to open the doors because it "feels good" outside.

My work is the exact opposite. They tend to go overboard, and in the middle of summer they have the AC blasting so that it's freezing in the building you've got to bundle up, and last winter the heating got all screwed up that they had it on the nighttime setting so the heat wasn't turning on during the day, and everyone was wearing their jackets. Took them awhile to finally getting around to fixing it.

Jean

lately it was unbelievably fine, just what bears like. Not too hot (around 70), but sunny, and everything - I mean, whatever little we have so far up north - is in bloom: tulips (it's only two or three years ago that they started planting tulips all round the city, we hardly had any flowers before), and lilac, and pansies. Yeah, that one. Everyone says that, or so I've noticed around here. I live in North Carolina and we say it. Razz in Michigan. You in Colorado. My dad says it and he's in South Carolina, coastal area. Even Jayson has complained along these lines in regards to Florida. Bethany in Alabama, but she lives by a chemical incinerator so its not surprising.

Daghain
06-26-2008, 09:15 AM
Well, I'd imagine the chemical incinerator may have a little to do with it.

But really, when I lived in Michigan, you had 9 months of cold and crappy, and 3 months of hot and humid. I don't call that changing every 5 minutes. I haven't lived there in 15 years, so who knows.

But here it really can (and does) change quickly. It can rain like hell for an hour, and then the sun comes out and 10 minutes later you can't even tell it rained at all.

And sideways snow. That's pretty cool.

educatedlady

Well Karen I guess you were right. I watched the weather report this morning and suddenly there's thunderstorms scheduled for every day. We were supposed to get some this afternoon too, but I think they missed us.
I really am getting sick of all this rain.

Drought conditions in North Carolina, we've had mandated water restrictions for almost a year. I wish I could complain about rain.

and no that's not a typo in the title. i leik switching the a and e in some words. same way i leik to spell leik leik this

Could you at least please spell right (I'm not talking typos either) in the thread titles and the starter post of a thread. It makes for easier readability. Also misspellings in thread title are going to automatically be corrected by staff, so you may as well spare us the extra work on that if you can. :)

As for the starter post it's best to be as clear and cohesive as you can because it sets the tone and intent of the thread.

Got a really intense thunder storm last night and so I found out which way it was moving and ended up driving about 100 miles late last night. I took 60 photos from my car, but none of them show any lightning. :(

It was nice to listen to Elliott and the Beatles while seeing a really cool storm. Wish I had some interesting pics to post, but alas, I don't.

So, update on the weather in the NE!

Just had a kick ass ice storm that is causing MAJOR power outages! We didn't have power from 1:45 am til about 8:50pm. Oh what fun that was. Spent most of it gone and were only coming home to get stuff when it came back!

Praise the Lord for heat!!!!:clap::clap::clap:

I'm glad you finally got your power back.
There were some places in MA that got hit pretty hard as well. I'm not sure if they've even gotten power back yet. They were saying on the radio it could be up till monday before everyone's is back on. We lucked out and I think it just missed us. We got a little bit of ice thursday night, but by friday am it was all gone.

That's very similar to some places around here. A couple of my coworkers are still without power, and they're saying some places might not get it back till after Christmas. hmm, I have no idea on how to answer that properly. But the amount of snow in and around this city depends heavily on where you live. Where I live (high altitude) we get quite a lot, sometimes it can snow 10-30 centimeters during one night. But other parts of the "county" barely has any snow at all.

Why not just come see for your self, Heather? ;)

Don't have the luxury of knowin' where some of you are from. But here in west-central-northern (haha weird, I know) North Carolina I have 8 inches of snow on the ground in the back yard! Woot! Most of the area got around 5-9 inches, with some weird areas only getting about 2. In the mountains, just to the west one place has 11 and a half. For those who care to look it up on a map I'm about 20 miles north of Winston-Salem. Work has been called off for the last two nights. I think that people in places where snow and winter weather are the norm tend to laugh at us down here. There were over thirty wrecks in the area at the onset of this yesterday, when we only had about a 1/4 inch on the ground. People here just can't seem to understand that you can't drive the same way you do normally when the roads get a little slick. I'll try to get a pic here (in the dark) in a minute and post it if it turns out at all.

03-02-2009, 07:27 PM
haha! I agree! The fact is is that schools are closed for the last rwo days, more than likely will be delayed on Wed. The only reason that they might send the kids back is that it is supposed to be about 47 that day. Don't get me wrong, I would rather stay here and type on the story some, but yeah, the roads aren't that bad. And I live a good ways down backroads that don't get the luxury of salt trucks or plows. I can't imagine living in Norway. I think it would be beautiful, from the pictures I've seen, but I don't like the cold so much. But I'd love to visit the place. Maybe one day it could be the first stop on my world tour. From there onward to Ireland and then Continental Europe, and so on. Yeah right. A man can dream, anyhow.

Sam

The biggest reason that schools close in the south when it snows or sleets is due to the lack of enough salt trucks and the lack of sufficient proper winter weather equipment on school buses. This makes for unsafe driving on some of the back roads that will not be salted or treated in any other manner to help ensure the children get to school safely. I'm certain that things are not any different anywhere else in the US, but around here it is the school systems responsibility to ensure the safety of every child under their care, no matter what lengths they have to go to. This led to several times when I was little that while we had perfectly fine weather in my school's area we would still have a snow day due to another part of the county having roads not fit for the buses to travel on.

'Tis the case here, as well. A lot of the back country roads here pretty much suck still. Like I said, lots of snow on the ground here, and my (supposed) SUV is sitting at the bottom of my driveway. The damned thing wouldn't climb the hill up to the house. Of all times for the 4wd to act up. I miss my Ford truck. That thing in 4wd would jerk a tree out of the grouind if you wanted it to. Thank you, GMC for giving me a useless turd of a vehicle.

And yeah, supposed to get down to the low teens tonight and be 70 by Saturday. Come on, Spring! At least we get to set our clocks forward Saturday nite. One sign Spring isn't far away, anyway.

We had like, a week in which it was pretty heavy (By English standards), and that's it. I always feel really excited when I see snowfall - I'm like a 6 year old. :D
It's the most beautiful weather, and I couldn't give a shit about the cold factor when it creates such a treat for the eyes to behold.
I really do love it - I wish we'd get more around these parts. :( Lucky Norway. Lucky Chap.

On a lighter note - the weather seems to be perking up a little here, which could be a good thing. It's not as cold, which means that I don't have to trundle around in my Nan's Winter coat. :P (No, really.)

All winter - that is, from mid-October to end of April - I have to walk as slow as if I was already 90 years old... I've worked out special king of gate for this... and soon the whole damned thing is going to melt, and then most places around - such as, say, supermarkets - will be just inaccessible, at least for people and bears who, like me, have no cars)

I am telling you....Jean is mere seconds away from declaring you to be a bear.

Hile, bearbrother! I never expected to meet anyone who feels about snow like I do. YES! I knew it was a good idea to join this forum. Praised be Dark Tower.

I know what you mean by that 90-years-old-walking. I call that kind of weather 'granny-killing-weather', as old people often fall down and break their hips/numerous other bones. Nature can be so cruel sometimes. *shudders*

Exactly! That's one of the reasons - maybe the main - why I hate winter so much! It's like I took a deep breath in October, and crossed my fingers for my wife and mother... and will be able to uncross them and breathe out only in about a week from today... http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bearheart.gif

Well you guys are more than welcome to send your warm weather up here to New England, at least for a few days. It's been absolutely terrible up here. Pretty much rain on and off for the past month or so, and somewhat chilly for the time of year. It's finally starting to warm up the the 70's, but they're still saying scattered thunderstorms every day. This really has been the worst spring/early summer that we've had up here in a long time. But I guess that's New England for you.

jayson
06-28-2009, 10:04 AM
i'd trade weather with you in a second heather. even the rain i can deal with because we get plenty of it down here in the summer. but temperatures below 70, that just sounds idyllic. :D

Heather19
06-28-2009, 10:07 AM
It's nice for awhile, but now I just wish it would finally warm up so we could get a nice summer. Although after a few weeks of hot weather you'll probably see me in here complaining that it's too much.

My sister just moved back up here, and the first thing she said after being here for only a few days is "please don't tell me it's like this all summer". I guess she was so used to the heat down there that this is too cold for her.

It's been raining almost nonstop here for the last few days.
In fact, it was raining so hard yesterday that when I got out of my last class at 7PM, I waited about thirty minutes to see if the rain and lightning would subside (even if only a little), but when I saw that everything was flooding anyway, I sprinted from the General Studies faculty/college to the Natural Sciences one and then to the parking lot (which has no roof).
Even though I took shelter every once in a while and ran as fast as my little legs could take me, by the time I got to my car, I looked like I had fallen into a pool and gotten back out.
Normally, I would walk in the rain and enjoy getting wet, but I had some guy's papers with me, and I didn't want them to get ruined.
On my way home, I could barely see the cars in front of me, let alone the road, so I was pretty scared. And on top of that, lighting was falling so close to where I was that the car kept shaking a little too much for comfort.

It rained a little today, and the skies have been mostly cloudy, but at least it doesn't feel like the sky is falling.
I just hope it doesn't rain tomorrow so I can go mooch off of the Ritz-Carlton's pool facilities and whatnot.
