It's that time of year again!

I started a similar thread last year as well where we posted our Halloween-related movie watching plans for October, reviews, recommendations, etc. (Here's last year's thread: Halloween Horror-thon 2011 (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?13472-Halloween-Horror-thon-2011))

We had a few people last year, so hopefully there'll be the same amount (or more) of interest this time around.

So what's everyone planning on watching?

I've been waiting for you to start this thread :)

I already went to see The Exorcist on the big screen, and I plan to go see Halloween. I also want to try to squeeze in Sinister, Paranormal Activity 4, and Frankenweenie somehow too.

And at home I'd really like to try to watch The Shining sometime before Halloween and maybe some of those old B&W horror films.

Now I just need to find some spare time

You knew I would. :couple:

Speaking of Paranormal Activity, would you recommend the 2nd one? I've only seen the first. I thought it was good but nothing I was blown away by. Wondering if I should see the rest of them.

And I'm with you on the free time thing!

the second one where they actually find the space ship and it ends with them chasing the dog.

How did you like it? I was looking On Demand for a good scary movie to watch today since Netflix isn't sending me Texas Chainsaw Massacre until tomororw, and saw that they had The Thing. Is it worth the watch, or pretty much the same as the first?

I'll be watching Paranormal Activity 4 and Sinster at the movies. Hopefully they want be disappointing.

At home I have started off with The Thing. The 80's flick with Kurt. I will be catching up on the Walking Dead. But first I will be going out to The Woods of Terror and hit the streets of Greensboro dressed as Freddy Kruger. Can't wait to see what type of reactions I will get from the people.

It was good. but was more a suspense movie than horror. Although the effects were way better than John Carpenters, the story is pretty much the same, except that it is actually the prequel to the one that came out before it.

We kicked off our Halloween celebrations early with some Basket Case 2... followed by a collection of Halloween cartoon episodes, Hocus Pocus, and Cabin in the Woods. Tonight, we watched Halloween 2 for the first time on our new tv with our new sound system - awesome all over again!

We also just booked our hotel for Chiller Theatre in NJ. Anyone else attending?

Hocus Pocus is my favorite! I have to watch it every year. When I was little and my parents would take us to Blockbuster and let us pick out a movie, no matter what time of year it was, I'd always pick Hocus Pocus.

OK, anyone that knows me knows that I love movies and TV shows. Amber loves them as well, but I'm kind of a freak about it. Trying to come up with some horror movies that neither of us have seen, came up with this list. I don't need a review for each one, but do any of these stand out as exceptional? For what it's worth, we're not fans of dated or slow horror (like the old Universal Monster movies). Thanks.

Suicide Club (2001, Written and Directed by Shion Sono)
Cape Fear (1991, Directed by Martin Scorsese)
The Haunting (1963, Directed by Robert Wise)
The Legend of Hell House (1973, Directed by John Hough)
Phantasm (1979, Written and Directed by Don Coscarelli)
The Woman (2011, Directed by Lucky McKee)
Spider Baby (1968, Written and Directed by Jack Hill)
Night of the Comet (1984, Written and Directed by Thom Eberhardt)
Tale of Two Sisters (2003, Written and Directed by Ji-woon Kim)
Re-Animator (1985, Directed by Stuart Gordon)
The Beyond (1981, Directed by Lucio Fulci)
Serpent and the Rainbow (1988, Directed by Wes Craven)
Cemetery Man (1994, Directed by michele Soavi)
Zombi 2 (1980, Directed by Lucio Fulci)
Ginger Snaps (2000, Directed by John Fawcett)
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971, Directed by Robert Fuest)
Black Christmas (1974, Directed by Bob Clark)
Frailty (2001, Directed by Bill Paxton)
The Howling (1981, Directed by Joe Dante)
Come and See (1985)
Flesh for Frankenstein (1973)
Cronos (1993)
God Told Me To (1976)
Threads (1984)
Daughters of Darkness (1970)
Martin (1976)
Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)
Dead Ringers (1988)
Society (1989)
Saló (1975)
Black Sabbath (1963)
Pulse (Kairo) (2001)
The Devil's Backbone (2001)
Repulsion (1965)
Kill, Baby… Kill! (aka Operazione Paura, Curse of the Dead) (1966)
Switchblade Romance (2003)
The Beyond (1981)
Kwaidan (1964)
The Devils (1971)
Hour of the Wolf (1967)
Carnival of Souls (1962)
Videodrome (1982)
The Changeling (1979)
The Innocents (1961)
Don't Look Now (1973)

And for anyone that hasn't seen them, my five star recommendations:

American Horror Story (tv show)
Dead Set (miniseries)
The Fades (tv show)
From Dusk Till Dawn
Insidious (greatgreatgreat, up until about 75% of the way through)
Legend (not technically horror, but dark fantasy)
Let The Right One In / Lat Den Ratte Komma In (the original. The American remake was admittingly good, but the original is much more mature.)
Shaun Of The Dead (horror comedy)
The Sixth Sense
The Strangers
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

We're also going to a family Halloween party where there will be a heap of kids (aged 4-10) so I'm thinking I'm gonna burn as many Simpsons Halloween specials as I can get my hands on to put on the TV in the background all night.

I hadn't really thought about watching anything this Halloween. Then on opening this thread, I thought maybe I'd give the Evil Dead films another go. It's been a while since I've seen them (I've even got the region one Book of the Dead editions of 1 and 2) but on reading further I realise there's other stuff I haven't seen yet. Cabin In the Woods for example. Of course I could watch both. With Cabin.. the'd be a reoccurring theme too...

I've also yet to see the new Thing film. (Why couldn't they give that a different name, by the way, since it's essentially a prequel?)

stkmw02
10-15-2012, 04:51 AM
Cabin in the Woods isn't terrible... but it wasn't exactly what I expected either. We watched it with my brother and a few of his friends. It was a good group movie to laugh at and talk back to the screen, but I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much if we watched it alone.

If you haven't seen Rare Export yet, that is a must see! Watch it toward the end of Halloween, though, as it leads nicely into the other holidays... ;)

My Halloween viewing is never complete until I've seen the Charlie Brown and Garfield specials.

Bonus points if I get to watch them on the VHS tape that I used to record them when I was a kid. Complete with the 80's/90's era commercials. I haven't managed that in years though because I'm not sure we own a working VCR anymore.

That's what I figured. If I have some extra time, I think I'll check out 2. FTR : Freddy > Jason.

My wife always said she as more afraid of Freddy than Jason because Freddy came after you in your sleep. So it was much more difficult to get away from him because you can't help but fall asleep eventually.

But as far as the actual characters go, I always preferred Jason or Mike Myers over Freddy. In the later movies, Freddy talked way too much.

The one question about Jason I've always had is, if his mother was killing the camp counselors for letting him drown when he was a kid, how the hell did he come back in the second movie to avenge his mother's death? Where the hell was he the whole time his mother thought he was dead?

The one question about Jason I've always had is, if his mother was killing the camp counselors for letting him drown when he was a kid, how the hell did he come back in the second movie to avenge his mother's death? Where the hell was he the whole time his mother thought he was dead?

LOOKS LIKE A CASE OF.....DON'T ASK DON'T TELL.

Well, he was languishing at the bottom of the lake. Mom, had the "Murder young campers" thing covered for a while there!!! LOL

Salo, on the list. :)

Don't say that I didn't warn you. :P

Oh boy Ricky, I think we've got to get you caught up. I think it was AMC that's been playing Friday the 13th all week. You should definitely check out both. At least the first ones of each. Then you can start to make your way through the sequels.

I know! I'm hoping I can at least see one of them. I think I need to have a day where I do nothing but catch up on movies. And I see that AMC is going to play Halloween 4 on Monday from 10-12pm, so I'm thinking I might watch it. I saw 1 and 2 last year, but am skipping 3.

:o

So you've never seen any of the Freddy OR Jason films? Why .. I never ...

FTR : Freddy > Jason.

Nope, none of them. And I only just saw Halloween for the first time last year.

Good call. 3 had nothing to do with the rest of the series. If you get a chance, check out the Rob Zombie remakes as well. They aren't too bad.

Plus they have Danille Harris  but all grown-up. She played Jamie in 4 and 5.

Mike Meyers has always been my favorite. He's the ultimate Boogeyman.

And Ricky definitely check out Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween. Hated the second but I thought he did an excellent job with the first one. Added a lot of depth to the character of Michael.

Yeah, I grew up watching horror movies so when I saw Halloween when I was 13, it didn't scare me. I saw The Exorcist when I was 6. That was scary. NIghtmare on Elm Street when I was 8. I honestly didn't sleep for almost a week. But after every Halloween when my family had a huge Horror marathons of exceptionally scary movies, I rarely get scared anymore.

the last movie to actually scare me was Nightmare on Elm Street. We went to see it in the movie theater. I was 12 or 13 at the time...after that nothing scared me anymore...lol...It was the ultimate horror movie. Nothing has compared to it since. Now suspense movies like the Paranormal movies are a different story. I don't consider them horror because they are more jumpers than anything else, plus the tension from the movies that makes you uncomfortable is cool too.

The first horror movie I saw was John Carpenter's "The Fog"... So it has a special place in my heart.

I loved all of the Nightmare movies, but they kind of have a comedic side to them.
Saw all of the Friday the 13th movies, they were fine, but I really loved the Halloween movies! I even loved Halloween 3, even though it had nothing to do with Michael Myers.

I am rewatching all of the Alien movies in honor of Halloween!

Halloween 3 is just amazing, because it has nothing to do with Michael. Don't get me wrong, the whole Michael series is amazing, but that one was just classic for breaking away. People get so fired up about it lol. I love the soundtrack to it, specifically the advert telling the kiddies to get home and watch TV with their mask on!

The Rob Zombie was brilliant. Like it was said above, added so much depth to the character. I really wish he had of done the Nightmare remake.

I loved all of the Nightmare movies, but they kind of have a comedic side to them.

That's really the reason why the first is my favourite by far: there's much less comedy involved and the idea of Freddy Krueger is presented as genuinely scary in that, and not played for laughs. 3 was also really good, but afterwards it just seemed to aim too easily for the comedy angle.

Saw all of the Friday the 13th movies, they were fine, but I really loved the Halloween movies! I even loved Halloween 3, even though it had nothing to do with Michael Myers.

I've seen a few Friday movies, and agreed, they're ok, but rather basic. Halloween is my favourite horror movie of all time. I've been reluctant to watch the sequels as a result of it being so perfect. Saw 4, wasn't impressed, saw the remake, even less so.

I am rewatching all of the Alien movies in honor of Halloween!

Nice! Again, loved Alien, 2 was also awesome, although not quite as much of a pure horror as the first one, but that's really no criticism of its quality. 3 was...ok, but not particularly memorable. Still need to watch Resurrection.

Odetta
10-22-2012, 06:02 AM
3 is stellar if you watch the director's cut!
Resurrection is my least favorite. But I bet it was Sigourney Weaver's favorite!

Yaksha
10-22-2012, 08:41 AM
Um, Resurrection is full of lesbian subtext it is ridiculous. But it is the worst in the series. Of course my favorite is Aliens the special edition version with all the new scenes in it. That is just a damn good movie.

Now, I am watching Let Me In after watching Let the Right One In. And I am having a very hard time figuring out which one I like more.
