A Face in the Crowd
A New Story Coming August 21, 2012

Scribner and Simon & Schuster Audio have announced a chilling new story titled A Face in The Crowd. Set for release on August 21st, the original ebook marks the second baseball-themed collaboration between Stephen and Stewart O'Nan. (Faithful)

Dean Evers, an elderly widower, sits in front of the television with nothing better to do than waste his leftover evenings watching baseball. It’s Rays/Mariners, and David Price is breezing through the line-up. Suddenly, in a seat a few rows up beyond the batter, Evers sees the face of someone from decades past, someone who shouldn’t be at the ballgame, shouldn’t be on the planet. And so begins a parade of people from Evers’s past, all of them occupying that seat behind home plate. Until one day Dean Evers sees someone even eerier...

A Face in the Crowd will be available on Kindle, Nook, eReader, iBooks, Android Play and more. The audiobook read by Craig Wasson will be available in both Mp3 and CD Mp3 formats from Amazon, iTunes and more.

We'll post more information about A Face in the Crowd in the coming weeks.

The premise sounds very familiar, I think King mentioned this story not too long ago, but i can't recall where and when.

Yeah it was just a mention of an idea. Can't recall the context, which is why I can't remember where I'd heard or read about it.

Someone else mentioned of Facebook that they heard him talk about the idea recently. It's not in the Gaiman interview.

Must've been one of the talks he participated in in recent months. This is gonna bother the shit out of me until we pinpoint it :)

I've never heard of the other author, Stewart O'Nan. (that just means I have limited exposure to good authors)
Can some kind people's please direct me to some some stuff of his or let me know if you think he is any good? What would be a good starting point if I was to read something he's done?

Looking forward to a new short story.

Cheers

James, King co-wrote FAITHFUL with Stewart O'Nan (the 'baseball book'). I haven't read O'Nan's own work yet but I hear good things about THE SPEED QUEEN.

I recall King throwing this out in Savannah as an idea for a story. Don't remember the exact context but along an example of how to go about writing a story. He threw this out as a basic premise. A Face in the Crowd is also the title of a very good Andy Griffith movie.

Richard gets the cookie! You're right, it's right at the end of his talk:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUfeHTK1Nw8

Starts at 1:05:05. He actually says "I'm gonna give this story to you, you guys write it"... And then he goes and writes it with O'Nan :)

Here's an earlier mention: King outlined it in Faithful, calling it the Face Game. You can read the passage here on Google Books (http://books.google.com/books?id=bxAsDauOiNQC&pg=PT155&lpg=PT155&dq=%22faces+of+the+spectators+behind+home+plate%22&source=bl&ots=l0Z3AT3bCA&sig=A2HKn8Lhy2sJ1cPzL3z_3vdg0I4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=rT0QUNLVK8fo0QG8qICgDA&ved=0CCUQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22faces%20of%20the%20spectators%20behind%20home %20plate%22&f=false).

mae

"Spectators", actually. Great find, Bev! So it's been on King's (and I guess O'Nan's) mind for a while.

mae
07-25-2012, 06:48 PM
I wonder if this will be novella-length. I hope so, at least should be Ur or Mile 81 length. Really glad King went ahead with this idea. It sounds interesting, which is why it stuck in my mind.

this story seems kinds of underdeveloped to me.

***SPOILER***

for one thing, why is that old asshole friend of his the emergency contact when it said earlier in the story that he wanted to treat his son and daughter in law to dinner, only they were on vacation?

meaning, if they were close enough to take to dinner and pick the place, then why list his friend as the contact?

Agreed and I thot the end was predictable - not a surprise at all
Maybe its just me but Im not a big fan of stories that push the "do unto others" moral. Been there done that. Much prefer a shocking twist with the only moral being shit happens and expect the unexpected 'cause even the good guys get screwed.

Sorry if thats a spoiler but I dont know how to do those spoiler thingys

It struck me as a campy story from his "Night Shift" days or an average Twilight Zone episode. TZ was always big on the moralizing theme. Still enjoyable though.
