What about the First Appearances of Short Stories in the magazines whether eventually collected or not! Or is that too much to ask for. :-)

I would like to see that list included here too. I don't have it available right now maybe someone else could put that together.

Patrick, Wiz, Karen, Daghain, and all members, I think we should break out two threads-One for First appearances of a SK book, and one for first appearances of SK's short stories. Perhaps both should be lists in the Catalog, and be uniformly titled. Do we do the lists by title, chronologically
or both? Wiki update capability?
Thoughts, and suggestions?

We are of the same mind. When I saw the amazing list that Mr. R.T. posted, my first thought was that it deserves its own thread.

Regarding how we list them, I'd like the others to tell us what they want to see, especially natehorning and Mr. Rabbit Trick as they are the ones who have done the amazing initial work.

EDIT: Separate thread now exists.

Hopefully, this is some great stuff and a great reference. I know I'll be checking this list for a reference.

I am thinking alpha would be easier for people looking for a particular story.

And I think the two different threads would make sense, again, for someone looking for just a short story, so they wouldn't have to wade through the books too.

Althought it's true that Romero wrote the Creepshow 2 script, the stories Old Chief Wood'nhead, Pinfall, The Hitch-Hiker and the wrap-around were based on ideas/notes by King.

Not sure if this is a 1st appearance, but this just in from Liljas:

The new Stephen King novella entitled Mortality is featured in the July 2009 issue of Esquire magazine. The magazine should be on newsstands this week and features the Israeli model, Bar Refaeli on the cover with a temporary tattoo of the story covering her body.

Leaf Peepers is an essay, not a short story.

"Cone Head" is also non-fiction if I recall correctly.

Was "The Return of Timmy Baterman" modified much from the novel?

DanishCollector
10-16-2009, 04:03 PM
Not much, only a few word differences here and there (and some passages deleted or slightly changed, to not spoil the book, I guess). And with a short note by King before the excerpt.

I know this thread was about published stories, but I was just curious.

Is "Squad D" the only unpublished, but completed short story that has surfaced?

jhanic
10-20-2009, 07:16 AM
Well, it depends on your definition of completed. Everything I've read about "Squad D" indicates that King wanted to do further revisions. There are a large number of finished but unpublished stories of King's, most of which are from his very early days. Again, check out Justin Brooks' Bibliography.

From the things I've read it sounded like King was fine with "Squad D" but Ellison wanted him to revise it for publication and nothing ever was done with it again. Maybe King agreed with Ellison, but never found the time to revise it, or maybe he didn't want to revise it, and knew how stubborn Ellison could be so he just sat on it and forgot about it or thought it wasn't good enough to bother with. Either way, I've read it and like it quite a bit.

Out of curiousity, on a scale of 1-to-10 how hard it is to find a copy of "A Possible Fairy Tale"?

wahlers

Could somebody confirm if is it "Satyrico II" or "Satyricon II". I'm seeing it both ways on different sites and just want to know which it actually is.

Thanks!

King's part is just one short paragraph in this.

Based on the context of the story, am I right in assuming that the story "Ur" is pronounced like the word "your" and not "you are"?

Bev Vincent
11-02-2009, 12:21 PM
I pronounce it "oor" (almost rhyming with "tour")

Gris
11-03-2009, 06:29 AM
I say "err" like fURnitURe

Bev Vincent

According to Ms Mod, who asked Steve, it's like "urn," so "furniture" is also correct.

What about the First Appearances of Short Stories in the magazines whether eventually collected or not! Or is that too much to ask for. :-)

I would like to see that list included here too. I don't have it available right now maybe someone else could put that together.

A minor correction, I think. Doesn't Under the Weather also appear in the UK paperback also?

The UK paperback was released nearly a month AFTER the US paperback. The list is first publications only.

Whenever I have the time, I just pick some random First Appearaces and go from there. I'm trying to do all the Fiction ones first because I know that's what the people care about. No one cares about his non-fiction stuff, lol. It hasn't been forgotten, just need to find the time. :)

Why should non-fiction be listed under, "First Appearances - King's Short Stories"?

Shannon

The Wiki section is called "King's Short Works"

Okay, so trying to keep up with King's fiction, since 2012's THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE, I'm showing the following fiction pieces have been released (or are scheduled for release):

"In the Tall Grass" (with Joe Hill)

"A Face in the Crowd" (with Stewart O'Nan)

"Batman and Robin Have an Altercation"

JOYLAND (06/04/13)

"Ghost Brothers of Darkland County" (06/04/13)

short story with title unrevealed from HARD LISTENING ebook (06/18/13)

DOCTOR SLEEP (09/24/13)

Am I missing anything already released or anything confirmed with a release date?

Apparently there's a new Stephen King Story in the August 2014 issue of Esquire. Anybody know anything about it?

The story itself features a man stuck in terrible traffic who witnesses something horrific and must make an important decision.
