Nothing firm planned yet - per the email reply that Bill sent this morning. I imagine it'll be like Rogues - we just have to order the book once it goes live and then request a matching number...

why could't you match your number if you were able to request in comments? If you currently have the rights to that particular number (if it were sold as part of ASOIAF) I would presume you would have a truer "claim" on that number than anyone else - you gotta figure everyone that ordered AGOT will want or try and order a copy - obviously I think it would be best if he opens it up to those with rights first (just like he did with game and abercrombie's series) and give a 1 month window to place your order - especially since most people will try and request the matching number anyway.

But it gets tricky. I have (matching) COK and GOT, but not the other books in the series (latecomer!).
Possibly I have a number for those two that someone else has for the other books, so who would have the truer claim then? A Similar situation may occur when the next book finally arrives, if I can get a copy (as you didnt get rights with COK/GOT) I may conflict with someone who picked up the earlier editions.

Since ACOK and AGOT aren't needed to maintain the series, the person with the other books has first right of refusal. If they don't order, Bill should be able to give you the matching number.

Thanks - I forgot that - so the person w #224 didn't bother with the sp acok and then Agot - so when it opened to public these were one of the books/numbers available. Thanks for the education ;)

I might be a unique situation. I do have ADWD with rights for the rest of the series. However, since my number is so low, it normally belongs to one of the SubPress lifetime members.
That's what happened to me with the Rogues anthology S/L, so I won't be able to get my number for that one.

What do people here generally feel a matching set of CoK and GoT are going to go for? I'm going to be selling my matching set (got a line on a matching set of SoS, CoK and GoT).

What do you think a fair price is going to be?

Well, you never know. This is from Bill himself from the last AMA that Sup Press did a few days ago: "This is not an infrequent comment directed my way. Just as my intention never to redo v1 and v2 of the series softened over time, so has my reluctance to produce aftermarket cases for ASoS. I'd say the most likely time for us to take a hard look at it is when the series is complete."

Except that it's a validated account and it seem 'real'...

Yes but like I said George told so many times that we don't to have be fooled because he doesn't have twitter or facebook accounts. That he only communicates on his Not a blog.

Here is the quote from his Not a blog:

" It seems I need to clarify once more.

I am NOT on Twitter. I am NOT on Facebook. The only place I post myself, in my own words, is here on Live Journal.

I do have an official Twitter account, and an official Facebook account. I established these in self-defense, because there were fake accounts out there, where people pretending to be me were making various spurious pronouncements... pronouncements that would then get picked up all over the internet and repeated as if they were gospel.

The official Twitter and Facebook accounts are maintained for me by my minions and my publishers. I don't post there myself. I don't even read them or check comments. I have other stuff to do. LOTS of other stuff."

He said that that the accounts are maintained by his minions and his publishers so maybe that is not totally fake. But till he don't say it on Not a Blog I wouldn't believe it 100%

So it does make sense that it is a validated account dealt with by his publishers and partners.
But let's keep in mind that it's not that because says he's not on twitter that he will not later go there. Remember Steve? ;)

One thing could be the shipping method. I choose UPS for this book while the rest of the books I generally just choose USPS. So my shipping notice was actually a UPS shipping notice. This could be why some people have gotten shipping notices and some people haven't.

They also might be shipping in order of numbered copy. I believe mine is in the 20s so that might be why I got a shipping notice and some haven't.

Just some speculation.

Here's some more exciting and wallet draining news from subpress:

In other Martin news, we have acquired the rights to George's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and will announce that limited edition once a few more details are in place.

Will we be correct in assuming that we can match numbers and there will be a pre-order period for those with rights to order before it opens to the general public? Guess we will have to wait for the actual announcement.

oh and this too:
We're very happy to announce that George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones is shipping. In fact, copies of the lettered edition are already en route to customers. Most of this week will be devoted to boxing and hustling copies of the limited out the door.

If you have a copy on order, please do not ask if it's shipped until at least 4/27, to give our shippers a chance to focus solely on sending books to customers.

Well, years ago I bought the UK/Voyager A Game of Thrones. That was in 1996. (It's still in mint, unread condition and was recently signed by GRRM.)
I assumed this was going to be a trilogy, ready to be devoured around the beginning of the new millennium. Well, we all know how this turned out.
How I approach ASOIAF? I buy the books, do not read them and hope to still be around when GRRM finally decides to end it all - the series I mean.
Of course I do not watch the HBO series - yet.

Now, I hope to be retired in a couple of years. I just might give in and finally read the books. I think I will.

I received my Limited Edition Copy of “A Game of Thrones” from Subterranean Press with the chest imprints on the slipcase. It’s a fine looking set. But if I may be so bold as to plagiarize a remark from your Tax Deadline-Day post, Becca69, “I want that Dragon!”

Haha - You should contact Mike S Miller thru Facebook. He might still be taking commissions.

Thank you Becca69. I shall take your suggestion under advisement...although...I was kind of hoping for a real dragon.

I've never even seen the lettered edition, but I can imagine the production values if Sub Press pulled out the stops. I'd be perfectly satisfied w/ the signed/numbered edition, though. :)

I've yet to find [Sub Press' S/L of FEVRE DREAM] for less than $300+, though, so it likely won't be added to my shelves anytime soon, unfortunately.

I bought my numbered edition for $140 last year - just gotta be patient.

Still exercising patience, but it's not yet been rewarded. :(

So it doesn't mention the time period for the pre-order - or did I miss that? Also with 750 of the limited - how many acok/agot did they sell? 500? Cannot remember since I just matched my number and ordered early (and paid little attention when they came up for sale later)

They will be announced via Email to all GOT holders.

btw:
so if 90% of all DWD holders buy it, there is a chance of 7 out of 10 that a GOT holder might get one - thats not to bad honestly

Well played SubPress ... fair enough

I'm missing the math here. Since there are 250 more copies of seven kingdoms produced than agot/acok (750 vs 500). It would seem that everyone (100%) that only bought agot should be able to get seven kingdoms - even if all 448 of those with dwd ordered seven kingdoms. But yes kudos to subpress to make an extra 250 (at least) that should be available to general public.

I never received an email either - don't think I deleted it in haste.

my thought was, 90% of the 448 DWD = 400 (+/-) so 350 left.

350 out of 500 GOT owners are 70%

I think you are double counting people. Those 400 ADWD owners you mention are very likely also among the 500 that purchased AGOT.

Given the edition size, anyone with ADWD or AGOT could buy one and there would still be leftovers for open sales. That should make a lot of people happy.

So, Bill at subpress decided to cancel both of my orders for the game of thrones. I hadn't read that I was only allowed one limited edition. That's fine my mistake. My lettered? Canceled that to, saying "canceled because you think the rules don't apply to you and you are a headache." Huh. I would have thought you wanted to sell books, not insult one of your customers. I can understand canceling the limited, but canceling my lettered order? Wow. Real nice. I was planning on keeping the lettered as well.

If you recall I was one of the biggest critics of the shining debacle. You can count me in as a critic for this to. I think he was pissed I sold my game of thrones limited on the secondary market for more than issue price. Like countless others have done. I was just unlucky that he found out my eBay name.

Anyway, you would think dropping over 700 dollars in 5 minutes would be appreciated but I guess not.

Those three novellas are the stories that are being collected in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The trade version coming out this Fall is the first time they are being issued together and includes something like 100+ new illustrations. Sounds like those are being ported over to the S/L version with some of them being redone in color.

Found another link.
Sounds awfully cheap (only $75.00) for this set leather-cloth and all.
I guess the Amazon paperback quote was a mistake.

Barnes&Noble also mentions paperback....

The $75 seems off - too low for 5 HC and too high for paperbacks. So is the "display" case just a piece of cardboard?

Based on the details from the Penguin site, I bet they are a small format book. And that it's also a "softcover" book.

I'm thinking these may be bound in the same kind of covers as the National Audubon Society Field Guides - which they call everything from imitation leather to flexibound to vinyl.
Not exactly paperbacks - the stuff holds up, is easy to clean and pretty much indestructible.

For iPad owners - there's a world of ice and fire app - can try it for free or pay $4.99 to unlock a ton of material from all 5 books. I had been playing around w free version for awhile - then dropped $4.99 - it's pretty cool. Great maps. Everything linked really well. A spoiler bar - so while I'm reading - and using the app to see where a character moved through the books - more wont be revealed. Pretty neat feature. Good character synopsis, pics, etc. I like to look at the maps and links as reminders while reading the books. Sorry for the ad - but it's pretty cool.

I was just thinking:
I have been collecting the books right from the start (1996), way before they became huge, way before the television series.
And - I have never read them, as I first want the series to end (will it ever?) - that's the time to dig in.
The above set might make for excellent reading copies.
So I think I'll honor my Amazon.de buy after all , as I considered canceling once I found out this is a paperback set.

But by that time I'm sure there will be other options.
And this set, incomplete though it is, will have served its purpose.

The best non-trade hardcovers are probably the blue slipcased ones like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/George-R-Martin-Dragons-Slipcase/dp/B00I60RL3K/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1431099341&sr=1-2&keywords=a+dance+with+dragons+slipcase - but they are hard to find and very expensive

P.S.: Looks like the slipcased editions are being reissued in October 2016 - January 2017: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0008115400/

Just popped in from Westeros.org. If anyone is interested, I've decided to part ways with my Subterranean Press limited set (matching numbers).

The set includes all SubPress versions of the book at #267 and future rights to the same number. I've also plunked down the cash for the Knight of The Seven Kingdoms. So, the only thing missing from this book are the Meisha Merlin versions of Game of Thrones and Clash of Kings.

In other words, this set will include the Sub Press versions of the following:

-A Game of Thrones
-A Clash of Kings
-A Storm of Swords
-A Feast for Crows
-A Dance with Dragons
-Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (when received from publisher)
-Future Rights to books in the series.

I'm open to offers, but given that there are six books already included with rights to future books, please send serious offers.

I'd love for this set to go to a good home rather than being the ignored stepchild to my full(er) set. And, like Westeros.org, I figure this community likely has the best homes around.

PMs are welcome or you can email me directly at evogeler at gmail. Thanks in advance!

Also A Clash of Kings is already up for pre-order, coming one month later.
Now I do hope this will not be just an identical re-issue. Different cover, illustrations - anything to make it stand out from the original set of books.

I was lucky to find these three editions in excellent condition - books 2 and 4 F/F (thank you again, Garrell!) and book 3 very good.
Now I do have a couple of questions. Hope to to find the answers here.

*Are these covers really that scarce? Lots of choice on eBay.
*Why did Bantam decide to cancel these awesome Steve Youll covers?
*And what I don't get is, after canceling the one for book 1, why go for 2, 3 and 4? I'm sure I'm missing something here.
*I'm still looking for the A Game of Thrones Youll cover. On eBay I only find complete sets, but I just want book 1. What would be my best bet? And, in F/F condition, what would be a fair price?
*There no A Dance With Dragons Youll cover? Guess not....:(

Thanks guys!

The second edition of book 1 has the John Snow cover in the same style and has of course gotten fairly expensive as a result. They don't show up all that often unfortunately.
I always assumed the second edition was released around the same time that ACOK was first published and they wanted them both to match. (speculation on my part).

Book 4 was never actually released with that cover, what you have is a proof. Wal-Mart didn't like that art and wanted something they deemed more appealing to their customers.

Books 2 and 3 all have those covers, so they aren't really scarce since they are on all of the first editions, which had many printings.

ADWD had a paperback release in Greece with the same artwork style. Youll has the illustration on his website.
Sadly there was no hardcover or English release to my knowledge.

When 'A Feast for Crows' was released they rereleased the other books in a similar design, and when 'A Dance with Dragons' came out the same thing happened. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing occurs for the last two books. I'm personally waiting for one boxset for the entire series (although I'll purchase a copy of the most recent book if GRRM comes to my area which is what I did with ADWD).

Well the MM SP thing wasn't avoidable since MM went out of business and they had to get a new publisher. I don't blame SP for wanting a full set of their own. I know it pissed people off, but really, it was expected.

(If GRRM wrote faster, the trade editions would probably all match )

That AFFC cover is rare.

The second edition of AGOT has been HTF and high priced for a few years now. Be careful because it went into at least 3 or 4 printings, unless that doesn't matter to you. You can find later prints for much cheaper with the Jon Snow cover. The lowest I've seen 1st prints is around $275.

all of my AGOT knowledge -was acquired from members here - so I can only tell about how much I paid for recent books. I have a signed 1st print of the second edition AGOT - I got that about 2 years ago - I think I paid upper $200 - but I could be mistaken. It was from an eBay seller - who specializes in GRRM - I think it might have been go-bad-chicken or another seller. I had bought a few books - and worked offline to get a decent deal.

I think that guy was going to the KC comic-con and planned to get some more books signed - although on one of GRRM's posts he mentioned he was only signing the anthologies that he was listed as editor or contributor - not sure if he was having a separate signing for his other individual books

So out of the blue I get a call from my friend who owns the shop where I buy my Trollbeads stuff. She said she had a surprise for me and to come in. Anyway, when I got there she had a bag of Dany's dragon egg paperweights (HBO licensed) and said the woman who designed them & the jewelry on the show was a friend of hers (Olga Ganoudis) and she told her I was a fan. I thought that was just the coolest thing.

A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 4) - 19 Jan 2017
A Dance With Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 5) - 19 Jan 2017

Each one is £75.00.

Interesting, I hadn't even heard about these. I hate ordering books from Amazon though. They always come in a bubble envelope and smashed to pulp.

Can anyone help me with a value for 1996 Bantam 1st/1st of A Game of Thrones, VG condition with a 1/4" small mark (remainder?) to the bottom of the page block? Also, what kind of value would adding a laid in (loose) GRRM signed bookplate bring to the table?

Maybe $250-300?? The bookplate might help offset the remainder mark.

I hope they're not identical to the first set of slipcased editions. Price is the same, isn't it?

sk

The first ones were about 25 GBP each.

Are you sure? I thought they went for 75 GBP.
But then, it has been a couple of years since I ordered them.

Yep. According to my Amazon UK account:

"A Dance With Dragons" was £23.99
"A Feast for Crows" - £26.00
"Clash of Kings" - £24.10

For some reason I didn't buy Game of Thrones then, maybe they were out, but picked it up last year for £80.00 and I think I got "Storm of Swords" from the Book Depository.

I ordered the new ones in Feb. for around £56.00. They'll probably put the discount back on when they actually come out.

I have an ARC of the Legends anthology for auction (http://www.ebay.com/itm/161818861426?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649) at the moment -- it contains a Song of Ice and Fire novella called The Hedge Knight. Of course, it also contains a Dark Tower novella.

I'm surprised they still have it... it's been out for a long time. The last beer to come out was Three Eyed Raven.

That is weird. I got the Three Eyed Raven several months ago which was my first AGOT bomber. I figured this was the next new one. I saw it several places so i wonder if the wholesaler just found a few cases in to back or something?

How often are they released?

Do you know when Iron Throne is being re-issued? That's the only one I don't have.

Edit: I see that the reissued beer should be out now or very soon... press release said end of Sept.

The Folio Society sent me a survey today asking about several "cult classics" that they are thinking about publishing. AGOT was one of the titles mentioned.
Folio is far nicer than Easton, so I hope they end up publishing the whole series. Actually, I think Folio does a better job than some of the small press publishers.

Folio is only researching titles they are interested in with their existing customer base at this stage. (and they have only mentioned AGOT so far.)
I don't believe they sell direct through Amazon either, so it's almost certainly not a pre-order for them.

I have seen people sell the empty bottles on Ebay but never a full one. It might have to do with transporting alcohol across state line? Not sure.

I have before but I wrapped it in shirts so that if it went through inspection they would open the box and just find shirts.

That's cool. I was just wondering how easy it would be to ship a full bottle. I wouldn't want anyone to get into trouble.

Actually now that i think about it I have ordered a case of wine online and they shipped it to me (from California) I just had to have my ID to sign for it. It is not illegal to ship using UPS or Fedex most shipping companies just do not like shipping any liquid in case it breaks and soils other peoples packages. But you you can lie about the contents if they ask but most don't ask and just package it well.

I checked eBay - many for sale, but impossible to tell if it's a 1st/1st edition.
I can always ask, of course.
