It was on their Twitter feed that I saw it:

'Re: questions about our edition of

@GRRMspeaking

's Fire & Blood; we plan to officially announce early next year. There will be a couple of exclusive preorder periods, where only those who own certain other GRRM titles will be able to order. Few copies expected for general public.'

My modest A Song of Ice and Fire (SubPress) collection consists of books I, II, V, plus a matching A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
And now, there's Fire & Blood. I have been debating for weeks, actually from the moment I received the SubPress announcement, if I should pre-order this edition, or just forget about it. On the one hand, I'm sure it will be another classy SubPress edition, but on the other....just not sure....
Now I have to add, I never read any of the books yet - when I purchased the first book, way back in 1996, I assumed this would be a trilogy and decided to wait till it was complete.......And here we are, more than 20 years later, still waiting....Seriously.

Still have about two weeks to go before SubPress will open this up to the general public. And I'm still not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I already ordered my copy - but I have matching numbers from MM books to current - so of course I would say yes -but what are your plans?
1) to try and add the rest of the books and complete the series?
2) sell the lot to purchase a complete numbered series?
3) eventually sell them all and maybe get 1/1 editions of each book instead and get a complete set like that?

And as for reading them - I have only finished the first three books...slowly but surely

frik

My plans....good one.
I don't think I'm after a complete series - at least, not after a complete set of limiteds. So far I'm missing the two matching editions of A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords, and I don't think I'll ever be able to add them to the collection. Truthfully, I'm thinking about selling the books I do have - not sure if owning the matching Fire & Blood would add to the appeal...To some it would, I guess, to others not so much.

My real treasures are the UK/Voyager first three titles - the first two having been signed by GRRM in London a couple of years ago. They're in mint, unread condition and I just love the looks of those three. So wish books IV and V had kept that design.

For those who have delved in signed/lettered copies of Stephen King's works, including the Dark Tower saga and etc., may I ask how GRRM's MM limited/lettered edition's condition fares relative to King's limited/lettered editions?

I very much love to collect the entire set of the Song of Ice and Fire series, either numbered or lettered series, but I find the dustjackets by MM sinfully ugly. The illustrations done on the dustjackets by MM looks very amateurish and even the fonts used remind me of 90s' dot-com era font! Also the quality of papers and binding used do not seem to be catered to super collectors. May I ask if my assessment is true?

Some more info from Folio Society:

The artist...has drawn eight exquisite chapter headers; one to represent each major character.

Our lavish collector’s edition will be printed two-colour throughout and these intricate black-and-gold chapter headers will be complemented by elaborate initial letters and page motifs.

It’s time to reveal that the incredibly talented Jonathan Burton is the illustrator for our edition of A Game of Thrones. His spectacular artwork includes 16 full-colour illustrations.

‘Illustrating A Game of Thrones became much more involved than I ever imagined ... I threw myself into this world 100% and relished its rich and strange visual atmosphere bringing together medieval romanticism, dark drama and chilling horror. Delicious.’
-Jonathan Burton

For the introduction, we’re proud to announce best-selling fantasy writer Joe Abercrombie. Author of the internationally acclaimed The First Law Trilogy, Joe has an encyclopaedic knowledge of George R. R. Martin’s fantasy world.

‘A Game of Thrones proved to me you could do something gritty, shocking and character-focused while still writing epic fantasy. I’m delighted to be providing an introduction to a book that was one of my biggest inspirations.’
-Joe Abercrombie

Both volumes of this highly anticipated release are cloaked in a beautiful cloth that mysteriously transforms from blue to red.

Each cover features a striking artist-designed illustration – one blocked in silver foil, the other in gold. Volume 1 depicts a fallen Stark direwolf pierced with an antler; while Volume 2 shows a mighty stag being taken down by a lion to symbolise the Baratheon and Lannister feud.

I'm going for it. I have the original 'blue' harper collins slipcase set and hope they publish the last book in that format too, but they are quite plain. I abandoned (sold) my part complete subpress set as I realised I would never complete it without selling body parts to fund it(!) and so this looks a great opportunity for a good quality illustrated set.

Tempting but to be honest $200 is a bit more expensive than I would have liked. CD's upcoming 'The Stand' for example will likely be in the $125 range for the standard gift edition and that book is considerably bigger. (I imagine this is because they split the book in two but I think that was unnecessary.)

My thing is they never say how many of these will be done, and in doing so somewhat cheapen the production for me.

My thing is they never say how many of these will be done...

Folio Society's "limited editions" (their higher-end offerings) usually state a run size, but their regular editions never do (the real FS collectors out there seem to find out, but it's never clearly stated, and FS always reserves the right to print another run of exactly the same edition, so you're not protected, if you're collecting with scarcity in mind.)

I got in touch with their customer service who told me that the first print run is about 7000 copies. That coupled with no GRRM signature means these likely won't appreciate greatly in value. Although who knows, with the popularity of GoT plus Folio being a relatively more popular publisher, 25 years down the line you could have something on your hands....:nana:
Having said that, I personally think the editions look very well done and would look beautiful on a shelf.

FWIW:

I won't be buying the FS AGOT so I will never be able to personally confirm this, but re: concerns such as this: FS doesn't use cheap paper, and generally when something looks a bit weak or cheap in photos, people who buy them say the photos don't do them justice (FS buyers post a lot of info on librarything.com and aren't shy about what they do and don't like). This is not to say you will all like this map, but hopefully it provides an idea of what you might expect if you're considering buying this.

Another illustration from Folio Society's upcoming (July 16) edition of A Game Of Thrones, this one from the slipcase's interior.

Take your books out of the slipcase, and a hidden illustration will be revealed!

An eerie White Walker emerges from the forest, its ice-blue eyes reminding you that winter is coming…

This is just one of the exquisite details that make this the definitive edition.

Don't delay - pre-order your beautiful edition of A Game of Thrones by 8 July to guarantee your copy!

Some thoughts on the Folio Society A Game Of Thrones from some who have already received their copies, if any of you are on the fence:

...absolutely love the presentation ... book covers and bindings and gilding are great. The map is on a thick stock and really looks nice. I'm super excited to put all my other current reads aside for a moment and start reading this fine edition this weekend.

The only thing I'm a bit ... ehhh ... about ... which I kind of thought I might be "ehhh" about ... are the illustrations. I only flipped thru some of them and they seem very much like the ones found in FS current offerings of Pratchett's Mort/Small Gods.

They are kind of (and this is just my first reaction to them) what i would expect in a young adult book. Kind of cute and kiddie ... if that makes sense.

...I personally don't find the slip case to be a "crappy carton box". It's actually (in my opinion) rather thick and sturdy. Is it a nice clamshell case ... no ... but is it a flimsy cheap slipcase ... not in my opinion.

As for the Illustrations ... they are just not my cup of tea ... but they are not making me second guess my purchase.

I do love the feel and look of the books ... I thought I was going to not like the covers ... but I actually really do. I love the format and that it's split into two books.

If you are a fan of the story and the GOT world ... for me ... This is a really nice buy. It will look beautiful on the shelf once the entire series is all together.

The "only" thing that would make me hesitate on purchasing is ... the price is a bit steep. But isn't everything overpriced in the world we live in nowadays?

For me ... each book is worth $50 to $70 plus the extra map might be worth adding $10 ... so a total of $150 would make this an absolute easy buy.

If the illustrations were more refined and in the vain of what I would think this title would call for ... then I would not complain about the $200 asking price.

Either way ... if you are a big fan ... I think most would be rather satisfied (not overly ... but not upset either).

I was lukewarm on the illustrations from the initial marketing materials and I tend to be more often underwhelmed when there has been a big expectation built up. Things rarely live up to their hype.

Not so with the Folio GOT. These books are gorgeous with lots of great design elements that make them worth every penny. First of all, as observed above, the slipcase is quite sturdy (and needs to be given the weight of the two volumes). It has a beautiful design in shiny gold on the external panel. But on the inside it is illustrated on all sides (top, bottom, rear panel, sides).

The covers are much better in person than in the photos and even the lion on volume II loses some of its cartoonishness. The binding is a nice tactile cloth (better feel and richer look than buckram IMHO). The endpapers with the sigils of the various houses was a nice touch. The titling throughout both volumes is two color (gold and black). Each chapter opens with a decorative initial letter and an illustration representing the character the chapter is named for (I.e. three eyed raven for Bran). The paper is smooth, almost shiny, and feels luxurious.

The color illustrations are evocative in person. I think we need to remember that these will not look like stills from the HBO series and will not look like the actors that were hired to play those characters. It doesn’t mean the illustrations are poorly done, just a different visual than what our minds have become accustomed to over the 8 seasons of the show. The descriptions, histories and family trees at the end of volume two are an invaluable resource even if it will require constantly opening Vol II while reading Vol I. Finally the separately included and bound map is even larger and more detailed than I had imagined. It makes the entire package seem more luxurious and special.

So my overall take is that this is an absolutely first rate unqualified success by Folio and I greatly look forward to their publication of the next installment in the series. For once I do not feel a newly released Folio title is overpriced and I’m getting every bit of the value I paid for.

Another comment:

The books are lovely and definitely a must have for any fan of the series. The books are well made, with two tone cloth binding, they are printed in Italy, the pages are luxurious - shiny and soft and smell so divine, the font is a bit on the smaller side, but the black and gold printing more than make up for it. The books are very heavy though.

I loved the illustrations also. It noway resembles the HBO characters and I think that is a good thing - it has a kind of 3d effect, very evocative and has an element of realism to it - like when Daenerys steps out of the fire she is shown bald as opposed to the HBO way.

The map too is very well done and more detailed than any I have seen so far. The slipcase is quite sturdy, with the embossed sigil and the night walker's illustration on the inside.

Overall Folio did an excellent job and I intend to read this edition many times over the course of my hopefully long lifetime.

FWIW, I just got my copy. I can kind of see what those comments say about the illustrations, a couple are definitely hit and miss, on the whole though I don't see myself being too bothered by it. A couple illustrations are outstanding as well, so...*shrugs*
It's truly a gorgeous edition and a definite must buy IMO. Especially for folks like me who were late to the party and missed out on the Subpress limited edition and don't have a spare kidney to afford one on the secondary market. It will fill that hole just a little bit.

About the YouTube video I posted earlier: for those who aren't up to watching 15 minutes looking at those books, you may be interested in seeing how large the fold-out map is when compared with the books themselves, which is shown at 11:50 (the map is pretty large and colorful).

My copy arrived. I think we have all seen enough pics now, but I have to say I actually prefer this to the subpress edition (which I ended up selling a while back as I only had GOT and COK and realised I would never complete the set!)
The lack of signature is absolutely the only negative thing I can say about this.

Folio did confirm on Twitter that the rest of the series should continue the same look/feel, with COK due in 2020

Would anyone be interested in a copy of the Map of the World that comes with the Folio Society edition of A Game of Thrones? My original has some very slight damage to one of the folds. It's barely visible when the map is folded out, but I contacted FS about it anyway. They promptly sent out a replacement, so now I have a spare. Also included is a promotional bookmark. It's yours for the cost of shipping (about $30 for US destinations, less for places closer to the Netherlands).

I spoke with them last year - they said the increased prices covered their incurred charges for overseas sales...of course you can look at all of the other UK sellers that we regularly buy from - and the prices on books are the same. The person I spoke with said - they were a smaller press and this helped with whatever fees they might incur...I did email regarding this I think when I ordered a previous book...

I think for a fine condition book you will still be paying top dollar. They are hard to find since the dust jacket is easily damaged and the boards are cheap paper. I would think at least $600+. Unless you get lucky!

German books, but certainly cheap IMO for 2 GRR Martin signed books !

Yes, the GRRM RRETROSPECTIVE S/L is the easiest to find, all others are much much more expensive.

This was one of the other Fanpro S/L GRRM books....

Has this guy given up on finishing the series? Anybody have any clues?

I see where he is now going to executive produce a tv series of Tony Hillerman books.

I quit buying anything he publishes until he he gets back to what made him too busy to finish.

He posted several updates over the last year saying that he was making quite a bit of progress on The Winds of Winter.
I doubt we will see it this year, but I do think we'll see that one "soon", relatively speaking.
A Dream of Spring? Who knows?

Executive Producers usually do not have to do much. My guess is they’re using his ideas.

Absolutely zero chance we get anything else.

I gave up after A Feast For Crows took five years.

Yeah, coming from someone who took 20 years for his series. What's Martin at - 25 years? But he's not the only one is he Patrick Rothfuss...

The ASOFAI Harper Voyage red slipcased releases are still readily available with the exception of A Game Of Thrones, which is now seemingly out of print.

Does anyone have a copy of AGoT they're looking to sell? Thank you.

Hello all. The day has come. Due to a death in the family and a few other things, I have to sell my GRRM signed 1sts. Here’s a quick description I typed up.

A Game of Thrones is a US first. It has an area on the spine where the plastic coating is coming away from the dust jacket and minor shelfwear. It is also personalized to me. And the DJ is not exactly centered.

A Clash of Kings is also personalized to me. And minor shelfwear. Clash also comes with a letter from the publisher as it was a finished review copy.

A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons all only have minor shelfwear. Dance and I Believe Storm came from the signed page. And Feast came signed from the publisher as a thank you for being a hand seller for Martin.
There is a post over on the GRRM Rarities page when I’ve posted pictures and the quality of them was discussed.

I am more than willing to send more pictures and answer any questions you might have.

Please make an offer through PM. I would rather not sell them through eBay if possible to avoid the chunk of $ they’ll take.
