Tomorrow, the UK xmas no. 1 will be announced. Just thought i'd mention it here because the current war for UK xmas no. 1 is, quite possibly, one of the most unlikeliest wars in music history. For the past few years it's usually been the winner of music talent show the X Factor, and it seemed it was going to be that way again with this year's winner, Joe McEldry's cover of Miley Cyrus's The Climb.

However, this year, the X Factor winner has been faced with the most unlikely of competition:

Rage Against the Machine - Killing In The Name.

That's right: a song over 17 years old by a rap/metal group might very well become the UK xmas no. 1. Yesterday it was already ahead of The Climb by a few thousand copies, but it looks like right now it's neck and neck. The reason the song has become so popular? Facebook. A group on facebook had launched a campaign to get the truly fucking awesome song to the top spot, and surprisingly it's done considerably well! Here's a link: http://www.facebook.com/#/group.php?gid=2228594104&ref=ts

Just thought i'd share that with any Rage fans on this board, or anyone who's interested in how brilliantly strange the UK is.

One more thing: apparently, the X Factor winner had never even heard of Killing In The Name until now. Regarding the singer's quality of music taste: 'nuff said.

Go RATM!

Yet another reason Christmas '09 was a particularly good one.
Not the greatest song in the world, but I always enjoy pissing on the norm.

It is sooooo cool that RATM ended up number 1 in the uk
though I find it rather disturbing that some dude from a cowell-helmed reality tv show doing a cover of a hannah montana "song" would have otherwise been the number one christmas song...
The removal of crappy music from the charts should become the norm rather than just a single joyous event:cool:

Eurgh. I agree, Flagg...the thought of it pains me - and every god damn year they churn out the same crap, and every god dam year it reaches number one! Madness! I'm glad to see some change, and it'd be nice if it stuck.

I'll second lastfm, and Allmusic (http://www.allmusic.com/) is another site I'll occasionally visit to find new things. Allmusic has some unique features (like Influenced By and Moods) that make up for its slowness and other flaws. lastfm is best for straightahead genre surfing.

I also have to plug some awesome freeform radio like Hollow Earth Radio (http://loudcity.com/stations/hollow-earth-radio/files/show/listen.html) and WFMU (http://www.wfmu.org/) ...you'll never know what you'll end up listening to, I've discovered some great stuff that way.

So I'm curious what all you people out there enjoy listening to. It's interesting to see what people are into and why they like certain artists or bands.

I listen to a variety of music, but I'd have to say 95% or better of what I listen to is pretty heavy. Just going from some of the music I have on a playlist of mine, I listen to stuff like Lamb Of God, The Black Dahlia Murder, Hatebreed, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Bolt Thrower, Krisiun, Kataklysm, Nevermore, and Meshuggah to name just a few.

I'm not sure what it is exactly that makes me so attracted to this type of music, but I love listening to it as well as playing it. I play guitar and bass, and am attempting to teach myself piano as well, but it's quite different than a stringed instrument. I also enjoy other stuff like folk, Celtic, bluegrass, down tempo, dark ambient, blues, and of course older rock.

Anyone with similar interests wanting to talk about music or something like that, feel free to add me on my YouTube page...www.youtube.com/savagesanity. Hope to hear what some of you all are interested in out there.

Hi Friend, welcome to the site.

We have a whole thread topic on Music ... Click Here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/forumdisplay.php?f=137) ... which includes discussion of individual bands, and general music themes.

This will likely get merged over there eventually.

Film shows Springsteen recording 'Darkness' album
By JOHN CARUCCI, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK – An Emmy Award-winning filmmaker has collaborated with Bruce Springsteen on a new documentary that chronicles the recording of the Boss' 1978 album.

The film, "The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town," will premiere Sept. 14 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Filmmaker Thom Zimny gained access to never-before-seen footage of rehearsals and recording sessions shot from 1976-78.

At the time, Springsteen was working to move past years of legal trouble and match the success he had with "Born to Run."

"The Darkness" album featured many songs recorded with a full band immediately after being written. Tracks covered the plight of average Americans, from the struggling everyday hero in "Badlands" to hopelessness in the title track.

turtlex comments : I'm going to post this over in the Gem movie discussion as well.

I had that happen with the modest mouse song breakthrough, the opening lyrics, "I got six sick six six, runnin round the neighborhood, it was well intentioned but bad advice" I always heard it correctly but thought that I was hearing it wrong becase six sick six six makes no freakin sense!

My husband gave me a turntable for Christmas! A few days later, I happened to find a bunch of my grandmother's vinyl in the attic. I found quite a few old school country albums that have been pretty fun to listen to. Last night was the real treat when I finally got to raid my parents' albums. The outer jackets on theirs have been in bad shape since I can remember, but the albums themselves are still in pretty decent condition. Last night I was able to enjoy Elton John's Honky Chateau on vinyl. Heaven, I tell you.

It took many years for me to start to appreciate country music. When I was a teen I couldn't listen to any of it. Now I can handle it a lot better. I suppose getting your heart broken a few times can help. I still don't like modern country/pop crap that gets put out these days but the country classics are pretty awesome.

And, you know, I grew up hearing this version my whole life and didn't know until a few nights ago that Willie Nelson originally did the song with Waylon Jennings. (I listened to that version and thought it sucked, to be honest). This was the only Willie Nelson version I could find on youtube.

"They'd rather give you a song than diamonds and gold" is a pretty fucking awesome line, in my opinion.

http://www.theatlantic.com/notes/2016/04/track-of-the-day-hot-and-bothered/480078/

Musicians like Ellington are too often praised but not listened to—many people can tell you that he is a jazz icon, some can name a hit (“Take the ‘A’ Train,” “Satin Doll,” “Mood Indigo,” etc.), but few truly delve into the work. This isn’t just to chastise listeners—I’m guilty of this as well. Hearing scratchy old transfers from 78-rpm discs, it’s hard to tell what’s really happening, or why fans and fellow musicians were so bowled over at the time. Some instruments don’t cut through, nuance is lost, harmonies are clouded.

Recently, however, a rare recording of “Hot and Bothered” has surfaced, along with a pair of Louis Armstrong tracks. The recording (embedded above) is from October 1, 1928, but it sounds beautifully clear—certainly better than the commonly available versions. (See the bottom of this note for a comparison.)

The provenance of these new versions is a little foggy. A man named Jonathan Holmes posted them on YouTube, saying they were digitized by his friend Nick Dellow, an audio engineer, who got them from metal “mother records,” which haven’t degraded or been scratched or worn down like the shellac originals. It’s unclear how exactly Dellow got the mother records, how many of them of survive, or whether listeners might be in for a long string of similar delights. Apparently these mother records were sent by Okeh Records, a once-leading (and recently relaunched) jazz label, to Germany for Odeon Records to press versions.

Here’s a delightful explanation of how mother records work, taken from the November 1918 issue of The Tonearm, a internal monthly magazine published by the Columbia Gramophone Company. (The issue also lauds the war effort and warns against the Spanish Influenza.)

This master record as already noted is a negative. The record which we play on our machine is a positive, the exact reproduction of the original wax disc, and, of course, must be pressed from a negative. There is no reason why records could not be made from the master record, except that it is much too valuable and would soon be worn out in the press. So from the copper master record there is cast still another, a positive, known as the mother record. Several of these are made from each master record, the material being an alloy of copper and nickel, harder than the master record itself. And from these mother records—positives—are cast the stampers, from which the actual records of commerce are pressed. The stampers, of a still harder metal than the mother records, are negatives. The final record which dispenses sweet music for you at home is, it will be noted, the fifth stage in the process...

I’m particularly struck by the guitar solo here. The guitar didn’t take much of a starring role in big-band jazz until the 1930s and the rise of the electric guitar; an acoustic instrument just couldn’t cut through the noise of a large swing group. But the guitar solo on “Hot and Bothered,” by the great Lonnie Johnson, comes through crisp and clear.

Here, for reference, is a recording taken from a standard record:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/logo-air-eurovision-song-contest-889304

The Eurovision Song Contest, the pan-European musical competition known to produce kitschy acts, will air live in the U.S. for the first time ever on Viacom's Logo, the European Broadcasting Union said Monday.

Logo, which is available in nearly 50 million homes, will show the 61st annual competition's grand final on Saturday, May 14, starting at 3 p.m. ET. It also will stream in the U.S. on LogoTV.com and the LogoTV mobile app.

This year's contest will be held in Stockholm, after Sweden's Mans Zelmerlow won last year's competition with his song "Heroes," with the semifinals to be held on May 10 and 12 followed by the grand final on May 14. Competing will be the 20 qualifiers from the semis, the Big 5 countries of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the U.K. and reigning champion Sweden.

“We are thrilled that the world’s biggest entertainment show is being broadcast live in one of the biggest TV markets for the very first time,” Eurovision Song Contest executive supervisor Jon Ola Sand said in a statement. “The Eurovision Song Contest is now a truly global phenomenon, and we are extremely happy that U.S viewers now get to join those all over Europe, Australia and Asia in experiencing the grand final of the world’s longest-running annual TV music competition."

The contest also will be seen in the 42 participating nations, as well as in China, New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Kosovo and Portugal.

The Eurovision Song Contest reached nearly 200 million television viewers worldwide last year. The 61st edition celebrates the theme “Come Together."

The contest's voting rules have been changed this year. It will now see votes split, with each country's jury vote cast first. Viewer votes across all countries will be added in later and announced at the end. The idea behind the change is that a song that scored poorly with the judges could still jump should the public really like it. In the past, the winner has often been known long before voting announcements came to a close.

Despite the home made quality of this, it is actually worth watching. It examines and compares the trajectory of both men's music careers up until around the year 1985. It has some very cool archival footage and is informative. We do get the maker's opinions on music throughout (occasionally hilarious) and there are several misspellings on the title cards and the music that accompanies the title cards is annoying but all that aside, it's pretty neat!

From one legend to another:

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/la-et-ms-chuck-berry-90-new-album-20161017-snap-story.html

Forget all those upstarts who just spent the last two weekends at Desert Trip in Indio: In conjunction with his 90th birthday today, rock ’n’ roll pioneer Chuck Berry has announced the release next year of his first new album in nearly 40 years.

Titled “Chuck,” the album consists largely of new songs written and produced by the man considered one of the founding fathers of rock music.

“It is a great honor to be a part of this record and the broader legacy of Chuck Berry, said Paul Roper, president of Dualtone Records, which plans to release the album at an unspecified date next year. “This body of work stands with the best of his career and will further cement Chuck as one of the greatest icons of rock and roll.”

As a singer, songwriter, guitarist and performer, Berry helped create the template for the rock ’n’ roll star still widely emulated 60 years later.

In a statement, Berry said, “This record is dedicated to my beloved Toddy,” the nickname for his wife of 68 years, Themetta Berry. “My darlin’ I’m growing old! I’ve worked on this record for a long time. Now I can hang up my shoes!”

He is backed for the album by two of his children-- guitarist Charles Berry Jr. and harmonica player Ingrid Berry. Other players include bassist Jimmy Marsala, pianist Robert Lohr and drummer Keith Robinson.

Berry has been telling interviewers for years that he was working on a new album, and he has finally completed it, having recorded in various studios around his longtime home in St. Louis. His most recent studio release prior to “Chuck” was “Rock It,” issued in 1979.

He and his band for years had a residency at the St. Louis club Blueberry Hill.

“What an honor to be part of this new music,” Charles Berry Jr. said in the same statement. “The St. Louis band — or as Dad called us, ‘The Blueberry Hill Band’ — fell right into the groove and followed his lead. These songs cover the spectrum from hard driving rockers to soulful thought provoking time capsules of a life’s work.”

Berry was among the original 10 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when it opened in 1986, and he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy in 1984. He also was a Kennedy Center Honors recipient in 2000.

Perhaps most revealing of the broad-reaching impact of genre-defining songs such as “Johnny B. Goode,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Maybellene,” “Sweet Little 16” and “Rock and Roll Music,” it was “Johnny B. Goode” that NASA chose as the only rock recording to be sent into outer space on the Voyager space probe in 1977.

“Saturday Night Live” famously poked at the idea of what response Berry’s music would have if encountered by an extraterrestrial civilization, and created a mock Time magazine cover with their message back to Earth: “Send More Chuck Berry.”

I just realized the other day how much a song's video can affect how much I like the song itself or at least enhance my enjoyment of the song.

There are plenty of songs that I like and can listen to on the radio or mp3 or whatever and that's fine. But the song "Sail" by Awolnation came on the radio and I recognized it but wasn't exactly sure why. Then I realized that I had watched a unofficial video of it on Youtube.

This one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaAWdljhD5o

The song is ok, but I really like the video. I'm not even sure why. Then there are other songs where the video seems to give the song much more feeling. Johnny Cash's Hurt is one. Say Something by A Great Big World is another. I like the songs but they seem so much better watching them with the video.

http://www.factmag.com/2016/11/16/vangelis-delectus-box-set/

Synthesizer pioneer and Blade Runner composer Vangelis has announced a huge box set that collects up some of his most important work.

Delectus will be released on February 3, 2017 and features many of his best known recordings: Earth, L’Apocalypse Des Animaux, China, See You Later, Antarctica, Mask, Opera Sauvage, Chariots of Fire, Soil Festivities and Invisible Connections, plus his collaborations with Jon Anderson of Yes (as Jon and Vangelis) – Short Stories, The Friends of Mister Cairo and Private Collection.

Sadly, some of our favorite recordings have been omitted. The release has been assembled by Polydor and Vertigo, so classic albums like Heaven & Hell, Beaubourg and of course the Blade Runner OST are conspicuously absent.

It’s far from the definitive collection, but still worth a look for Vangelis fans, not least because the reclusive genius has personally overseen the remastering. “I always welcome remastering my old work, for two basic reasons,” he explained. “Firstly, I get the opportunity to bring the sounds to today’s standards. Secondly, it gives me the chance to go through the experiences and memories of the time.”

The set will be presented in a deluxe box with rare photographs, essays and a bumper booklet about his Polydor/Vertigo career. There are also four remastered bonus tracks provided.

Delectus will be released on February 3 and can be pre-ordered now.

http://www.goldenglobes.com/articles/jean-michel-jarre-music-film-and-hollywood

For years, fans of Jean-Michel Jarre would have little options - other than boarding a plane for Europe - to attend one of the musician’s live concerts, celebrated for their lights and fireworks. Even though his largest to date was in Houston in 1986, attended by 1.5 million people, the creator of popular albums such as Oxygene and Equinoxe never played in America again. That's why meeting him at Amoeba, the music store in the heart of Hollywood where he came to present his latest album, Oxygene 3, felt a bit strange. But there was a reason behind it: that day, Jarre announced a tour in the USA that will start in Toronto in May 9th and will take him to Montreal, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Denver and San Francisco, to conclude in Los Angeles on May 27th. Previously, he will go back to his giant concerts playing in Masada, Israel, on April 6th. Being in Hollywood, the conversation touched on his relationship with his father, the famous composer Maurice Jarre, who was nominated to 11 Golden Globes, winning four, and his reluctance -until now- to work on his own soundtracks.

Your concert in Houston was your only American experience. Why are you coming to America now? Why did it take so long for you?

Each time we were planning to tour in America, for different reasons it was not fitting the right schedule. So on two or three occasions I was about to do it and I had to cancel it, because I was involved in some other things. And I am really happy to finally be in this country, because I love America for lots of different reasons and also my father became an American citizen and being the great soundtrack composer we know. The relationship with him had been a bit difficult through the years and it became much better at the end of his life. California and soundtracks was a little bit my father’s territory. I think psychological reasons made me postpone.

What does Hollywood mean to you?

Actually, it’s very strange, because Hollywood means to me what it means to everybody, I mean, the center of the entertainment in terms of movies and music. But also for me, it’s something quite different. My father passed away six years ago now and I feel very close to him these days, it’s a little bit like as if he was with me and just with the idea of coaching me, we are together. I spent a lot of time with this Electronica project in Hollywood, and it’s like a part of my homeland in a very strange way. I was born in Lyon, in France, but I almost feel the same kind of thing when I am in Hollywood. It’s very strange because it’s very familiar, like something close to my family actually, because this is something that is very personal and I would say even enhancing my desire to work closer to Hollywood, maybe doing soundtracks or different projects and spending more time here in Hollywood. And that’s what I am planning to do for the next two or three years.

You started by writing film music years and years ago but you haven’t done it as much once you became famous. Why did that happen?

Actually for the same reason. It’s that I always considered my career as a recording artist, by doing concerts and shows. Soundtracks, they were really my father’s territory. Actually I refused a lot of soundtracks in my life, saying okay, I leave this to my father in a sense. And I don’t know if it was a good or a bad thing, but it’s what happened. I refused lots of soundtracks actually in my life and now all that has changed. The way we are doing soundtracks these days is different, where we can see that more and more composers for current movies are using electronic music as a serious style for soundtracks and maybe that was not the case back in time, where even for Sci-Fi movies, I have always been amazed by the fact that systematically, these big movies, they were using strings and orchestras and apart from Blade Runner, most of them were conceived with a symphony orchestra. Now things have changed and I think that I have things to bring and I feel that, and I am saying this in a humble way, but I think that today, my involvement in potential soundtracks would probably be more relevant than it was before.

How was the musical relationship with your father? Because for years I thought, he is the son of Maurice Jarre and that is why he is a musician. And then I found out that it was your maternal grandfather the one who influenced you. When you met with him, did you talk music?

You know, it’s strange, almost not. We met very few times in my life. My parents split up when I was five years old and he went to America. I grew up in Europe really far away from his influence. And that was when soundtrack composers were mysterious. We are not talking about soundtrack composers as we are talking about them today. So it was really abstract what he was doing. I really grew up far away from his influence, even from a musical point of view. And because we never saw each other that much, when we were meeting, I don’t know if it was because he was a bit shy, but we never really talked about music, which is something obviously today that I regret.

Your Grammy nomination came on top of your reconnection to America. Do you feel overlooked? I mean you got another nomination before, but you have been working in this for more than fifty years. Did you ever ask yourself before, why aren’t they paying attention to what I am doing?

No, not at all. And you know, you have so many talented actors and directors who have never won an Oscar in their life and when you are thinking about Charlie Chaplin or Orson Welles, it makes you very humble. Or Ennio Morricone, who just got his first Oscar last year, so that makes you very humble. So I am not thinking like this. I mean obviously a Grammy nomination is a great honor and it’s also for me very important because it’s regarding the collaborators and the whole team working with me. But, obviously if I can get this Grammy back home, it would be a great achievement. But I am doing like lots of artists, where I am not necessarily doing music or movies to receive Oscars or Grammys and obviously if it happens that would be a good thing. But I never felt any kind of frustration before, and we know the business and it’s really a mixture of so many parameters.

I get really excited when I hear a story involving the history of a song. I came across this bit of info the other day involving The Monotones' Book of Love. I thought it was pretty cool. :)

"One interesting story about an incident that happened during the recording of the song bears repeating: according to the apocryphal story, while the group was rehearsing the intro of the song in the studio, a baseball came crashing through a window and -- perfectly timed -- hit a wall, causing a resounding crash. The group was listening to a playback of the song and sure enough, there it was: "Oh, I wonder, wonder ohm ba doo doo who -- BOOM! -- who wrote the book of love?" They decided to keep it, adding a solitary kick of a bass drum during their session at New York's Bell Studios."

I always love sharing this fact about the song Fernando, by ABBA. Apparently at one point the song was going to be called Hernandez (my last name). How crazy is that?

Like many other ABBA songs it was composed by the two male members of ABBA, Björn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson along with Stig Anderson, ABBA’s manager. (Ulvaeus, and Andersson did not just write songs for ABBA and its members, they wrote songs for many other Swedish artists.) The song’s first title was “Tango”. Then apparently it was called “Hernandez”. A last minute change was made prior to recording in August 1975 - this is when the name “Fernando” was used. The song was originally a love story in Swedish about Fernando having lost his one true love.

https://consequenceofsound.net/2018/04/frances-bean-cobain-debuts-her-first-ever-song/

Frances Bean Cobain is the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, so naturally any sort of music she releases is going to receive immense scrutiny. That probably explains why Cobain shied away from the medium for the first 24 years of her life. In recent months, however, she’s seemed more receptive to showing off her natural-born talents, and has shared a capella covers of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to her Instagram page. Tonight brings another video performance, and this time it’s an original.

Cobain claimed the untitled song as her own and shared some of its lyrics: “I think I saw you when I was small/ I think I found you/ A penny for your good thoughts/ I think I found you/Jesus hangs in your place on the cross/ All these hinges become unscrewed/ Heaven knows it was a cage on earth.” Another verse not featured in the video hears Cobain singing, “Stable sable sold her heart/ No one asks her why she hides in a basket in her house in a box/ Find a fiend who reigns supreme in May/ Fast enough for blooming buds to lay their egg.’”

She captioned the song/video by writing, “A) there are so many memeable moments in this clip B) I’m SUPER restless because i can’t play guitar with long nails so I’m just sitting in my room alone singin to mah self C) not having a TV in my house is the best decision because I’m forced to occupy my time with things that feed my brain & soul instead of wasting energy on thinking about not having to think.”

https://www.jambase.com/article/woodstock-2019-bethel-woods-new-york

In June of 2014, Michael Lang – a key figure behind the original Woodstock festival – made big news when he announced his intentions to throw a 50th anniversary celebration for Woodstock in 2019. Little has been said about the festival since, but it appears an amphitheater built on the site of the original Woodstock is gearing up to host a 50th anniversary celebration and recently received financial help from the state of New York.

While the original 1969 festival was supposed to take place in Woodstock, New York; permitting issues led organizers to move the event 43 miles outside of town to Max Yasgur’s farm in Bethel, New York. In 2006, Bethel Woods Center For The Arts opened on a campus of 2,000 acres that features a 15,000-capacity amphitheater, a museum and more intimate gallery space. The campus includes the site where the Woodstock festival took place in 1969. Operators of the not-for-profit Bethel Woods were recently awarded a grant to help with planning for an event in honor of Woodstock’s 50th anniversary in 2019.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports Bethel Woods Center For The Arts received $689,063 earmarked towards a three-day festival in 2019 from New York State’s Regional Economic Development Council. As for now, whether Bethel will host a festival planned by Michael Lang is unclear.

Lang and his partners have put together Woodstock anniversary festivals in the past at locations far from where the original event took place. Woodstock ’94 featured the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blues Traveler, Primus, The Allman Brothers Band and Bob Dylan performing at Winston Farm in Saugerties. Then there was the infamous Woodstock ’99, which took place in Rome, New York and is more familiar to music fans for the violence, alleged rapes and fires that went down at the site than the music.

State officials gave the grant to Bethel Woods operators in aims of spurring tourism and economic growth. An additional grant of $28,225 was issued for various improvements to Bethel Woods including markers noting where major events of the 1969 festival took place. Stay tuned for more on Woodstock 50th anniversary celebrations as the Summer of 2019 approaches.

Damn...

http://variety.com/2018/music/news/kendrick-lamar-wins-pulitzer-prize-for-damn-1202754548/

Kendrick Lamar has won a Pulitzer Prize for music for his album “Damn.,” the organization announced Monday afternoon. Host Dana Canedy seemed quietly delighted when making the announcement.

While the Pulitzer’s usual laudatory blurb explaining the reasoning behind the award was not available at press time, there’s little doubt about the impact Lamar has had on hip-hop, music and culture since he broke into the mainstream with his 2012 album “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.” Each of his albums has been a vast musical progression from the one that came before, but most importantly, his lyrics reflect his upbringing in Los Angeles’ tough Compton area, the black experience in America, hip-hop’s history and legacy, stardom and countless other topics — all through a remarkably modest and self-assured attitude, one that does not lack the confidence and bluster that most rappers have, but all through the lens of an old soul. Lamar, 30, has won 11 Grammy Awards and has been lauded by and has met with President Barack Obama on several occasions.

Musically, his albums have challenged both himself and hip-hop’s standards: While “Good Kid” was a kaleidoscopic take on Lamar’s own life and upbringing in a thoroughly melodic yet hard-hitting musical context, his next album was a deep challenge to his audience: He enlisted a battery of Los Angeles jazz musicians to back him, and while songs like the Isley Brothers-sampling “Alright” — an unofficial anthem of the Black Lives Matter movement — were relatively straightforward musically, others were challenging even to jazz heads. And while “Damn.” is a return to more conventional hip-hop overall, it is not without its challenges: For example, the second half of “D.N.A.” features three different musical elements that barely seem to have anything to do with each other.

Pop group Abba have returned to the studio to record their first new music since the 1980s.

The Swedish quartet said the new material was an "unexpected consequence" of their recent decision to put together a "virtual reality" tour.

"We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the studio," the band said on Instagram.

"And it was like time stood still."

No release date has been set for the new songs - but one of them, titled I Still Have Faith In You, will be performed in December on a TV special broadcast by the BBC and NBC.

Abba's spokesperson Gorel Hanser described the new songs, saying: "The sound will be familiar, but also modern."

The studio sessions were "like old times", she told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

"Easy as anything. It didn't feel weird that they hadn't been in the studio together for 35 years."

But Hanser said the group would not perform live, other than as holograms in the forthcoming Abba Avatar tour.

"No, you can not expect them to join forces on stage again," she said. "They will not do that."

The band have resisted pressure to reform since they stopped recording together in 1982, despite a reported $1bn (£689m) offer for to tour in 2000.

In an interview with the BBC in 2013, Agnetha Faltskog said she preferred to leave the band in the past.

"It was such a long time ago, and we are getting older, and we have our different lives," she explained.

News of the new material comes in a bumper year for Abba fans. An immersive exhibition based on the band's career is running on London's South Bank, while Chess, the musical Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson wrote with Sir Tim Rice, is being revived in the West End.

I don't think there's a Tool thread, so I'll just toss this here:

This is a hell of a way to get an update, but it is what it is (which is: random bits of Tool news sprinkled throughout a 10:32 video).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVoWPLCxjv4

Highlights:
- new album has 6 or 7 songs, each of which is over 10 minutes long
- "each song is almost like a full album, in regards to how much they've packed into it, so someone could still get the full album experience by listening to just one song"
- they consider it their best
- the drums are done, the bass is half-done, the guitar will be done after that, and the vocals last
- one song is the heaviest they've ever written and the vocals were even more intense than those on Ticks & Leeches (but then I thought the vocals weren't yet recorded? don't ask me)
- all artwork will be done after recording is complete

No release date was mentioned or guessed at...but someone said a band member this month (May 2018 ) said "can you wait 7 months?," which suggests around December.

By mentioning this December as a tentative release date, of course, I have guaranteed it won't be out before June 2019.

Anyone here a big Prince fan? If you recall, when we had our gigantic music tournament, there was no or very little Prince music on YouTube. Well recently a deal was reached that made his music finally available for streaming, and most of Prince's stuff is now up on YouTube:

https://variety.com/2018/biz/news/prince-estate-and-sony-release-23-long-unavailable-albums-digitally-1202908647/

As part of an agreement struck in June, the Prince Estate and Sony’s Legacy Recordings today launched their first round of catalog digital releases with a set of 23 albums originally issued between 1995 and 2010.

The recordings, which include such popular albums as “The Gold Experience,” “3121” and “Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic” as well as a new 37-track compilation called “Prince Anthology 1995-2010,” had been largely unavailable for many years. All are now available across all major streaming services and digital service providers. Many of these albums are available for the first time for streaming and download, adding more than 300 songs to the artist’s online in-print catalogue.

The recordings date from the latter half of Prince career, in which the intensely prolific artist released as many as four albums a year, either through his own labels or via one-off deals with indies or major labels.

Curiously, the artist’s biggest hit from that period — “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April of 1994 — is not included, although it was part of the original tracklist for “The Gold Experience.” Reps for the estate and Sony declined comment, but a source close to the situation tells Variety that the song is “on legal hold as a result of existing litigation.” (The song was originally issued on the indie Delmark Records after Prince’s label at the time, Warner Bros., with whom he was publicly sparring, reportedly declined to release it; after its chart success, the song was included on Prince’s next album for Warner, “The Gold Experience.”)

Assembled and curated under the auspices of The Prince Estate, “Prince Anthology: 1995-2010” opens with the title track from 1996’s “Emancipation” (“This is my most important record,” Prince said of his first album released after he’d left his original label, Warner Bros. Records) and closing with the anthemic “We March” (from 1995’s The Gold Experience).

Starting in 2021, Sony/Legacy’s distribution rights will be expanded to include 12 Prince non-soundtrack catalog albums, featuring music recorded by the artist from the 1978-1996 era for distribution in the United States. Music from this period covered under the agreement includes the albums “Prince” (1979), “Dirty Mind” (1980), “Controversy” (1981), “1999” (1982), “Around the World in a Day” (1985), “Sign ‘O’ The Times” (1987), “Lovesexy” (1988), “Diamonds and Pearls” (1991) and “[Love Symbol]” (1992). Prince’s soundtrack albums, including “Purple Rain,” “Parade” and “Batman,” will remains with Warner.

The announcement includes no mention of physical product, but it seems likely that many of the albums will be released on vinyl at some point in the future.

Prince catalogue titles newly available digitally via SME/Legacy are:

The Gold Experience (1995) (“The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” greyed out, partial album streaming only; album unavailable for download)
Chaos and Disorder (1996)
Emancipation (1996)

I don't know about June, but apparently 2019 is Tool's target year, as Maynard tweeted "#2019" (among other things) in an "update" tweet on 9/10/18.

Fun facts: when Tool last released an album...
...there were no iPhones
...North Korea had no nuclear weapons
...the Harry Potter series was unfinished.

Well, unfortunately for me, I still do, and Tom Morello's comments ("epic, majestic, symphonic, brutal, beautiful, tribal, mysterious, deep, sexy and VERY Tool.") on the new Tool material he heard only cranked up my excitement for it (although "sexy" has me scratching my head).

They are pretty good. I think they'd be better off without the Plant comparison. The singer is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin, but that isn't their only strength. I suspect they'll tire of that comparison. They are a band of brothers except for the drummer. They ought to play that up.

These young guy’s are getting a lot of attention. There hometown is about 40 miles northwest of my home, there band name is a older lady’s (80’s) name Gretna, sound’s better without the “n” they held a birthday party for her on there new album release. I like there music and wish the best for them.

Coming August 16-18, 2019, this pan-generational music, culture, and community event will be held at BWCA just 90 minutes from New York City. These three days of memorable experiences will include live performances from prominent and emerging artists spanning multiple genres and decades, and TED-style talks from leading futurists and retro-tech experts. Festival goers will also be able to visit the Museum at Bethel Woods, which tells the story of the 1960s through immersive media, interactive engagements, and artifacts from the 1969 festival, as well as experience the special 2019 exhibit We Are Golden: Reflections on the 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival and Aspirations for an Aquarian Future.

“We are thrilled to partner with Live Nation and INVNT to produce Bethel Woods Music and Culture Festival,” said Darlene Fedun, CEO, BWCA. “Fifty years ago, people gathered peacefully on our site inspired to change the world through music. As the stewards of this historic site, we remain committed to preserving this rich history and spirit, and to educating and inspiring new generations to contribute positively to the world through music, culture, and community.”

The three-day festival will utilize BWCAs’ state-of-the-art venues and facilities. Entertainment villages and a number of bespoke performance areas will be specially created for the occasion. Full details of the event line-up, ticketing, non-musical experiences, and brand activity will be released soon.

Jean-Michel Jarre is one of my all-time favorite musicians, some of you might've seen me post his stuff here and there. And now we have this cool thing:

https://completemusicupdate.com/article/jean-michel-jarre-updates-hsbcs-sound-identity/

HSBC has hired Jean-Michel Jarre to create its new “sound identity”. Because once you reach a certain level of corporate music making, “jingle” just doesn’t sound right.

Seven different versions of new composition ‘Together We Thrive’ will be used by the bank. It has been “created to be relevant to the 66 markets in which HSBC operates by working across different languages and cultures”.

If you phone up HSBC today you can hear it while you’re on hold. So that’s something to do. It’ll also start appearing in adverts, in branches, in HSBC’s app, on its ATMs and at its offices around the world. So if you engage with HSBC a lot, you’d better prepare yourself to start getting very tired indeed of this new track.

“This is the first time that I have worked with a brand on a project like this but I really connected with HSBC’s deep focus on the notion of thriving”, says Jarre. “My music has always been about the future and in order to thrive in the 21st century, I truly believe we need to focus on the environment, education and technology. Once I understood their value to the HSBC brand, suddenly it seemed that we were speaking the same language”.

Christ. And here’s HSBC Global Head Of Brand Andrea Newman: “Sound is an increasingly important part of brand building in a world where our audiences are busy and distracted. Having a distinctive sound which works alongside our visual branding and logo means we can be easily recognised wherever and however our customers interact with us. We are delighted to have partnered with Jean-Michel Jarre who has created a sound identity which will work across the many countries and cultures in which we operate”.

Despite all this probably making you feel like you need a bloody good wash, ‘sonic branding’ is actually really interesting. Have a listen to this episode of the excellent 20,000Hz podcast on the subject.

Despite the commercialism, the music is actually really good:

New Tool album "should be out mid-April," per Danny Carey:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTozctAdgYw

It also seems there was a listening party for the new album last Friday:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtFliYIBewf/

...this guy was there and supposedly liked it but I can't find his original message saying so:

https://www.instagram.com/gabrielshaffer/?hl=en

...which (supposedly) said:

Still recovering from last nights hang in Hollywood at the loft.
All I can say is I heard something from start to finish, that a number of us have been waiting to hear for over 10 years now. I can confirm it is worth every bit of the wait. The main question is are we worthy of it?
#tool

...and they added flesh to the weird skeleton guy on their website that moves around, which has fans all riled up.

I don't think there are any other Tool fans here, but if so, some giant (apparent) news: they tweeted out something (https://twitter.com/Tool/status/1125992825756233729) that said August 30, which can only mean (we hope) the new album (the first in the iPhone era...) is to be released on that date.

Interesting discussion but I generally disagree with the premise that modern music often lacks melody, and electronic music is specifically singled out as simplistic or as just "sound design" but as someone who's very much obsessed with music (mainly electronic music), see the Now Playing thread for proof, I can definitely state this is not the case. Even the artists mentioned, like Billie Eilish or Taylor Swift have put out very melodic songs just this year.

Metallica is playing five festivals in the US next year. They will play each festival on Friday and Sunday nights with different set-lists for each night. Other bands to be announced later. There are five three day festivals though so there will be a bunch of other bands.

Presale tickets are available for purchase now if you are a Metallica fan club member. Tickets go on sale to the public on Monday, 10/14/19.

There are both general admission and VIP tickets available.

I purchased the GA tickets for the Daytona Beach, FL festival. The Daytona International Speedway is less than an hour away from my home. The GA tickets for the three days was $169.50. There was a service fuck you charge of $40.28 per ticket and a $9.00 ??? postage charge for two tickets. I just figured the final price for two Metallica shows and everyone else who will be there was worth a couple hundred bucks per person however they want to invoice the charges.

The VIP tickets are $499.50 with a $83.76 service charge. I don't know the shipping price.

Prices might be different at your closest venue.

May 1-3: Epicenter - Charlotte, NC

I just saw Modest Mouse and The Black Keys and it was a really good show. I don't know much Black Keys, but I'm a huge Modest Mouse fan.

New City And Colour is out and I'm loving it. Here are some singles from the new album.

Any Opeth fans? There new album is awesome.

It’s taken a few listens to sink in, but I’m now loving it and I think it might be their best from the no-growling albums since Heritage.

I don't yet have anything of theirs, but their last few albums have been pretty interesting (I've sampled extensively through YouTube).

I have a ticket to see Tool the day after tomorrow and am frantically trying to dump it. I'm just not excited about going (age? and I'm a dull person) and the idea of reaping some sweet, sweet cash intrigues.

I finally bought and listened to the new Tool album...I'm going to see them in November; I can't wait.

I just saw I wrote this two months ago...funny how fast things can change.

I must say I'm glad it died. It was HIDEOUS in a general sense.

Sorry, but no, disco is awesome. And it never went away, it evolved.
