As it was my birthday yesterday, it is appropriate to leave you a little teaser of a new awesome Pride & Joy (1 of 5) that await me upon my return from Ann Arbor next week. These have been in the works for a millenia...I have always wanted Michael Whelan to do remarques for me in my S/L Gunslingers (I have 3 numbers, a PC copy and a Lettered copy). We have talked about it for more than two years. I left my books with him in March and last night in an e-mail birthday wish, he left me a little present. There will be 4 more!

Hope you like....I am in a swoon.

This is the official unveiling of the new Father Callahan! Michael was commissioned to do character sketches of all the major (and some minor) characters in the Dark Tower series for the Discordia project that debuts this Monday at www.stephenking.com. I posed for Michael in March. Steve was just offered all of the artwork, and luckily he did not choose Callahan. So, after Audrey frames the painting, it will hang in my home (I think in my Betts Books office). Woo-hoo! Here he is:

All you Michael Whelan fans... you just have to play the Discordia game and get a look at the DT art.

Personally, the portrait of Eddie - I'm ( practically ) speechless. It's wonderful. And the Susannah, simply beautiful.

David - I don't suppose you have any idea if any of the Discordia Art might someday be available in prints/lithos from MW's site?

There are several of the paintings by Michael Whelan in DT7 that I would love to have prints of, I just can't find them for sale anywhere. The few that are on Michael's website are not ones I'm looking for.

I'm looking for a print of:
The Clearing
Walter's End

And I know there was one from DT1 but I can't think of it offhand at the moment.

Does anyone know if prints were ever even available for these? If they were, where might I find them?

To the best of my knowledge, Michael never did prints of these paintings. He did the Crimson King and Roland holding the rose in front of the Tower.

Out of all the moments of the DT books my favorite is the Poloroid Pic of the dark tower. I saw in the Knowing Darkness book that MW id a B/W drawing of that. Is that in the DT7?
I would love to have that as a print.

I thought these would be better here than in the Pride and Joy thread.

Here are two small (8"x8" & 8"x10") character sketches that Michael Whelan did for the Discordia project.

I think these are in the same series of art that David's Father Callahan is from but I'm not certain.

I do know that I was NOT the model for either of these!

"Alain" and "Cuthbert" both done in acrylics. Expert framing by Audrey Price.

I like these a lot and Judy says I can hang them anywhere in the house.

I am scheduled to go see Michael and Audrey later this afternoon. I don't know if it will be a shorter visit or an extended one. I am anxious to see how Audrey framed my Callahan painting. It's been ready for me since Christmas...we've just been too busy to get together. Also, I am getting a book signed for a member here.

If there is any newsworthy info to share, I'll post it here.

I had a nice visit with Michael and Audrey. Only saw Michael for about a half hour to talk over tea and to exchange some items. Spent another hour with Audrey strategizing on how we can work together...Michael Whelan art and Betts Books. Lots of good ideas but keeping them close to the vest for now.

At any rate, I finally picked up my framed Callahan plus two unexpected bonus pieces of art. Michael gave me the prelim sketch that he did when I modeled for him last March in his studio and he also did an extra remarque of me as Callahan for my Knowing Darkness art book that just was released. Here is the artwork I received yesterday:

Oh okay, I didn't think so. I was just curious to see, if it was, how it would be possible to frame canvas art.

To frame canvas art, from my understanding, is fairly easy. You attach the canvas to stretcher bars on all sides of the canvas and build the frame around the canvas. Every recently made canvas framed artwork I have seen did not have any glass in front of it. The older ones I have seen have been in museums and I didn't want to touch them to find out. I'm not an artist and have no experience with canvas pieces myself. Every piece of art in my home is either sericel, paper, or cork. If I am wrong, please correct me.

In this painting, Michael shows us the soul-wearying travail of Roland the Gunslinger as he marches doggedly through all space and time to reach his goal.

A new Whelan classic that perfectly captures King's final words on his epic. "It is the journey that matters, not the destination."

Wow. I really like that paining but, 200 seems a lot for... a print? I mean it's cool it's signed and all but his sig isn't exactly hard to come by. Are small prints like that commonly that expensive unframed?

It has been TOO LONG for a Michael Whelan update so I happily can provide one....It has been 14 months since I visited Michael and Audrey in their home (they live 45 minutes away from me), but I spent three hours with them yesterday. my story and pictures in a minute.

One update though....after agreeing to do remarques (for a price obviously) for several years, Michael has stopped doing them for the time being so that he can focus 100% on his personal gallery work. Not to say he won't at some point agree to do remarques again, but I wanted to let you know that all requests will politely be turned down until further notice.

Now for my visit story:

I had a FABULOUS time with Michael and Audrey yesterday….spent 3 hours with them talking about our families, King, and everything in between…..always a magical time for me….You should SEE their home….OMG!!!!!!!!! virtually every piece of wall space is filled with a Whelan original…amazing how many he has kept for himself….to view up close and personal Roland – Legends on the Beach, Roland carrying Jake in the woods scene after Jake died, Crimson King on his throne….I visit heaven every time I go to their home.

Michael almost always leaves me with some goodies, sometimes things he ascribes no value to but are GOLD to me.

He was shuffling through some papers and pulled out a rough pencil sketch that he did of Charly from Firestarter. He said he was going to use the idea for Jerad’s huge art book “Knowing Darkness” but am 99% sure Michael said he never made an actual Remarque out of it, so he just gave me the sketch (pic attached).

Then…long story made short….several years ago Michael gave me as a Christmas gift a preliminary charcoal sketch he did PRIOR to the original 1982 Gunslinger artwork he did…Roland looking at his reflection in the water…..it was a Pride and Joy of mine….then Michael sheepishly asked for it back over 3 years ago as the sketch actually belongs with a Lettered copy of The Art of Michael Whelan that he has…he promised to “make it up to me.” It took him over 3 years to do it, but he gave me two pieces yesterday as “compensation”…the first being the ink sketch he did of the final illustration in LSOE, although this version is a mirror image of the one from the book and he actually added more shading and background to the version he gave me. Gift #2 is an early prelim Michael did of the Crimson King in oils on canvas. Michael said he obviously did away with the pointy hat but kept the main features are true image. Pretty AWESOME gifts.

Finally, Michael was doodling in a pad while we visited (I could not see what he was doing), but he slipped the sketch in with the Crimson King…it was of Oy….how he knew I always wanted a Whelan Oy is beyond me but to know he “inscribed” the drawing to me and that he did it in maybe 15 minutes while we were chatting is almost hard to believe. So those are my treasures I received (plus numerous signed books of my own, including the Orange Gunslinger proof I own –now signed by King AND Whelan, plus the Viking Gunslinger proof, also double signed).

I’m telling you, I can’t imagine what it would feel like to sit like that with Stephen King for 3 hours, but sitting with Michael Whelan is as close to sharing space with Gan as I’ll ever get I think.

Hope you like my story and pictures.

David

As it was my birthday yesterday, it is appropriate to leave you a little teaser of a new awesome Pride & Joy (1 of 5) that await me upon my return from Ann Arbor next week. These have been in the works for a millenia...I have always wanted Michael Whelan to do remarques for me in my S/L Gunslingers (I have 3 numbers, a PC copy and a Lettered copy). We have talked about it for more than two years. I left my books with him in March and last night in an e-mail birthday wish, he left me a little present. There will be 4 more!

Hope you like....I am in a swoon.

Are we certain that Mr. Whelan has not personally donated and or contributed to the Haven Foundation on his own accord? Perhaps gave his time and effort through working with SK direct?

i am confident that Michael has given back plenty via charitable endeavors. He simply has chosen other vehicles to do so....

Maybe so, but I am not aware and believe me I would be the first guy in line. I have been chasing the guy for many years and the closest I have I have gotten to the man is through, David at Betts (wonderful man that he is). Bill, you're wrong. Michael Whelan contributed several times. I remember he donated copies of the limited print that was used as endpapers in the Dark Tower VII volume. And not just for one fundraiser.

Sidestory: I also remember talking with him personaly about the HF and someone told Michael that the whole fundraiser from last year (probably 2008's one) raised the same amount King earns in 20 minutes. It was somehow funny.

I was at NYCC today and Michael Whelan was there doing a signing. I got to talk to him and his wife for a few minutes and I'm pretty sure I acted like a teenager meeting their celebrity crush. His granddaughter was there too, but not old enough to chat :) Brought one of my Gunslinger 1/1's along to get signed and also picked up a print. The print was already signed, but he also inscribe it for me. The entire day was amazing, but meeting him was probably my favorite part. Apologies for the poor quality of the print picture; it's behind plastic.

Thanks everyone! His wife told me "I saw your note about a Dark Tower-related drawing, and Michael said to tell you that will be great." when she was confirming my order and the request. I was still totally blown away when I open the book and saw what he created. Greatly exceeded my expectations.

Remarque aside, the book is also amazing :)

Fabulous. I love the MIB.
What are the sizes of the pieces?

Thanks for the comments!

Image sizes are as follows:

Sister Coquina 24 x 18
Man In Black 12 x 15
The Gunslinger 9 x 12

A WONDERFUL ADDITION to a collection... Congrats.

I found this at a good price (I think) and it shipped this morning! It's approximately 12" x 9". The seller included a little backstory:

In 2008 I attended the Baby Tattooville event. Limited to only 50 attendees, we had the honor of meeting and watching our favorite artists up close. This was my treasure from that weekend. Michael asked me what I wanted him to paint...I told him anything that he would like...he said he'd draw his favorite gunslinger. Two days later I was stunned to be taking this incredible piece of artwork home with me.

Well yeah, Caretaker! Since you used to own it!

Don't feel too bad for him everybody, he still has 4 of the 5 that Michael did!

Flew up to see Michael and Audrey last week and, along the way, picked up a Shawshank prisoner on the side of the road. Said he ran a bookstore called "Betts" or something like that....

Stay tuned for some pics of a few new additions to my collection courtesy of Mr. Whelan....

I cannot wait... I LOVE WHELAN. If anyone here does not have one of his DT pieces (prelim, Knowing Darkness, original from a book, remarque) framed and hangin on their wall... they should seriously make it a HOLY GRAIL because when I walk into my little book room my few Whelan's are the first thing I see... and I bet there has not been one time I have not smiled. They really do give me great joy and if you have never seen his work up close... your missing out cause he is just... amazing. I have spoken to a few collectors on this and our very own Bob Jackson said it best to me not that long ago when discussing the artwork and the price of a piece... "I'm glad they are realizing the worth of Michael's paintings. There is no one else in the field like him and, IMO, he has no peers. He is head and shoulders above any other artist." You will never lose on a Whelan and the joy you receive from seeing it everyday will make whatever you spend on it worth while. I am always looking for more to adorn my walls. :excited::excited::excited:

After a LONG wait, I am proud to post the most recent acquisitions courtesy of Michael Whelan. Two 40 x 25 Original Paintings from Little Sisters of Eluria.

As a bonus, webstar1000 sold me the Pencil Prelim early last summer which kicked of this fantastic journey.

Enjoy and wishing you all Long Days and Pleasant Nights......
