OK, I may be "on my own" with this one, but I for one think this is the zenith of "Random Board Coolness". I try to give it out, where appropriate, as much as possible. It's a great form of communication and it also recognizes "cool" and "interesting" posters.

I think, JMHO, we should ALL give it a chance and look for opportunities to support and encourage other board members. It's a great feature and easily accessible as the "Star" at the bottom left of each post. Spread the Joy!!!!

Anyone Agree????

I went from having no clue what it was and therefore avoiding it, to getting really into it. To that end, for those who have no clue what it is, its like a way to give props. If someone makes a post that you like for whatever reason, you click on the star in the bottom far left of their profile and can then make a comment on what you're giving them props for - and they get a notification that they got a reputation comment (which they can then read) and the green pips under your username go up accordingly.

I think you have to "spread it around to like 10-15 folks before you can back to a person. You are also limited to like 10 Rep comments in a 24hr period, I believe. Its that way so that you can't "load up" on any one person in particular. I like the ability to make annonymous comments while not having to actually post. Kinda neat IMHO

DoctorDodge
10-11-2011, 07:23 AM
Yeah, but 10-15 is just a bit excessive. Then again, maybe I'm just a cynical bastard overthinking this, but I only like to give out reputation when it's earned: when a profound statement is made, when someone's made a comment so witty I almost choke on my crumpet, or when someone says "Doctor Who/Life on Mars is the greatest show ever". Thing is, I usually just hand these out to a few. With a third of those to bears. Or would be, if there were less reputation needed to be spread around. Is it my fault he continuously posts such anecdotes of wisdom and shit?

Isn't it too bad how your own reputation in the "real world" is really based on other's perception of you...i mean...without anyone knowing you, you get a "reputation" of being something. Reputation just sucks IMHO.

I agree, it does indeed suck. And once you have this 'reputation' its very difficult to change peoples opinions that they have formed (and its not just in 'real life')

You know, you folks pose some very valid questions. Maybe we can get RF to come in here and explain the "Reputation Rules" in detail. Like how much "Rep" you can give in a 24hr period and How many you have to "spread" around before you can return to a member.

How about it, RF?

The specifics can be Googled, but the Reputation feature is a small bit of whimsy added to the site. I'd rather leave it as an enigma wrapped in a mystery, shrouded by fog...

Okay, I need help here. I don't see any "star" or "stars" links, buttons, icons or pictures with which to do this.
Is it because I'm brand new and haven't yet been long enough to earn priviledges?
It that's all it is, that's cool. Just maybe, since this is sort of the start point for most who pay attention to your FAQs etc., mention that if we are new
we cannot use this feature.

If that's NOT the reason I can't see the stars...the only other thing I can think of would be that I'm using the Default skin. Does it have to be in a certain skin to see?
Thanks to anyone taking the time to answer my noob question. :)

Okay, now this is weird. The only time I see the star is while I'm posting. I'm doing the writing of this particular post and can see the star there. Obviously, or IMHO obviously, I won't be voting for just my own posts......perhaps the answer will become apparent as soon as I send this post. If it does, I'll probably just delete it. Beg pardon, all.

Can you explain what the fund is for? The Haven thing? I'm brand new. :redface1: Oh, guess you already knew that. I think it will work just fine. I'm also looking for where discussions of the actual books are. I'm not interested in buying any particular "edition". I'm not a bibliophile as much as I just love to read.

Oh! Check it out! It I've got 8 posts! And as I look around I see the star everyone talked about and the thread tools, and view options, very cool! It worked!

Well it looks like you have more than 5 posts, so you should be good to go.

The Haven Foundation fundraiser is a fundraiser the site does annually. There's auctions on some great items, as well as little contests and giveways. It runs from Jan-May I believe. There's a whole sub-forum for it where you can find some more information. http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/forumdisplay.php?199-2014-Haven-Foundation-Fundraiser Also Bill will probably be by to welcome you

If you're looking for discussions on King's books, Cara Laughs is where you'll find all that. And if you're looking for The Dark Tower specifically head over to Mid-World. You'll find plenty to discuss there.

If you need any more help finding you're way around just let me know :)

I like the reputation feature on any board because it really helps out. I have noticed though, that once someone gets started into bad reputation, people tend to gang up on them and their rep goes much farther south than they really earned. You can tell because those with bad rep will have TONS of bad rep. There isn't ever anyone with just one or two points of bad rep. Its like people enjoy punishing someone so they just hive mind and they all start making it a point to give that person bad rep.

I think on this site only Moderators (maybe even just RF) can give 'bad' rep. It is possible to leave negative feedback on a transaction that has occurred between members, but I think only positive rep can be given

For what it's worth, I preferred it that you could only leave positive rep. It's a nice way to give thanks for something or to express how good you thought a post was. I think negative rep would be open to abuse. Take the recent 'debate' on the PS books, if the option to leave neg rep had been available, it could have got out if hand.

It was my understanding that the algorithm used for the Rep points feature was known to only a select few and that having this knowledge was akin to storing Black 13 - over time it will eventually send you crazed with power or insane. (based on that it shouldn't take long to work out who has this information ).

Some say, it's not just number of reps left but also their current proximity to the beam and direction of the tower. - YMMV

I think neg rep is for the birds!

Interesting, though because i have never left anyone rep before (that I can remember anyways), I clicked on the star at the bottom of neo trinity's post in the other thread and was given the opportunity to select "I agree" or "I disagree." I mean i think that is kind of corny, that you are not allowed to agree or disagree with a specific post without being accused of pillorying someones "reputation" What it actually SAYS when you press the star and what the feature is actually being used for are two different things. Of course if someone selects "I disagree" it is viewed as an attack and most often might be, by a cowardly poster who doesn't have the balls to call someone out in person and in public. I don't see how continuing to allow posters to select "I disagree" to drop anonymous negativity bombs on a poster is conducive to thoughtful discourse and the common good of the boards.

I have felt pretty good the few times I have gotten positive rep, even though I think that is weird too... Someone gives you a compliment but you dont know who it is unless they self identify (wild Bill has often done that in my posts where he left me + rep)

But the ability of an individual poster to act like a weasel under the cover of anonymity kind of sucks.

Negative rep is a passive aggressive way to go out of your way to be mean. I made a "Joke" after two people where given neg rep when all they were doing was stating their opinion.

Please let me KNOW who you are, if you don't find my comments interesting or funny just ignore them please. And when I have an extra magazine, bookmark or something else, please don't ask me for one. I don't appreciate mean people. I find most everyone on this site, quite enjoyable.

Sorry if you don't like my comments -- I received two negative reps, neither I felt were deserved or warranted.

But the ability of an individual poster to act like a weasel under the cover of anonymity kind of sucks.
I believe the options are: "I approve" or "I disapprove". Very slight difference.

You may agree to many things what others say; but you'll approve a thing what you think is right and within you authority (act) to do.

I have to admit, I was fairly unaware of the Reputation feature until this week, even though I know I've seen notices about receiving new reputation feedback or whatever.

My new goal is to use the "I approve" option whenever I see something helpful, fun, unique, or interesting posted. I will never use the "I disapprove." That seems too passive aggressive and I think most folks who know me realize that I'll just reply to a post that I feel is incorrect or lacking factual context or just plain mean. ;)

. I received two negative reps, neither I felt were deserved or warranted.

Yes...I have too... anonymously ... Consider them cowards!!!

I have given ONE neg. rep and signed my name.

If one hasn't the guts to sign it... it is just aggressive whining!

Another NEG REP. is somebody messing with me? or they really dont like me. just tell me who you are so i dont ever have to deal with you. Please.

i saw way meaner, rude and ignorant posts than mine all over the boards!

You actually received a positive rep and 19 positive points. 11:35 am this morning. Not sure why the person left the comment "neg rep points for your joke post was STUPID and MEAN..."

Click 'Settings' at the top of the page. The bottom frame is titled "Latest Reputation Received" It then states your total rep points in the same line. Within the frame are your last five rep posts.

The points don't actually mean much. You don't gain or lose any privileges. It's more of the annoyance of being passively aggressively attacked.

Exactly. There have been a couple of instances where someone left positive feedback with a clear derogatory message.

There have probably been 5,000 clicks giving an "approve" and AFAIK less than 10 "disapprove" where an upset recipient member contacted me.

The main thing I like about the feature is it's a quick way to say "+1" without having twenty posts saying the same thing.

What's the purpose of negative reputation points?
What do they "do" or "not do" for a member, can anybody clarify this?

My apologies if I missed a previous post.

Below each User name is a Title and then a series of green boxes. Positive reputation will over time increase the number of boxes. At a glance one can see how much positive reputation a member has garnered. If you hover your pointer over the bars there is a comment on the level the person has achieved.
Negative reputation can reduce the number of green boxes, but it takes quite a bit of negative rep to be given to significantly lower a members reputation.

It doesn't really mean anything.

I don't think anyone would have a problem with it if it wasn't anonymous.

Without some add on 3rd party software I can't make the reputation reveal the sender.
I can turn the feature off, but then no positive reputation can be given.

I admit to utilizing the "Rep" option often. Almost exclusively to give "Pos Rep" and I generally disclose my self in the comment. Sometimes you want to say something, but not want to PM or post publicly and enter the conversation, but just make a "personal message" to the poster. At least, that is what I do often. I think I have given "Neg Rep" on a post once or twice, and regretted it immediately.

FWIW, RF, is the one that generally gives me * "Neg Rep" most times just b/c he knows it used to aggravate the living shit out of me!!! LOL LOL LOL He can be a cruel, yet fair fearless leader!!! LOL LOL

* Okay, yes it still does!!! LOL LOL LOL

It's funny I see this thread now as I haven't before. Just today someone left me a purple(assuming that's negative because the rest have been green?)with no comment as to why but it was from the SK appearances thread. Apparently saying I plan to attend U Maine is a bad thing. :rolleyes1:

Is the Feedback Score related to only trading here on DT?

I have a zero but that is not accurate if it is tied to eBay.

Note: My feedback Score only shows (to me) if I refresh my browser. But that of others is always visible (to me.)

Is there a way to tell if you have received negative points if the person does not leave a comment?

This question lead me to go look at my last few rep posts (given to me, not the other way around) and I discovered something interesting. There is a little bar in front of the rep message, all of mine are green (which I assume is+ve) rep, but one is 'grey'. now I thought neg rep appeared as a red bar, but that was just an assumption. Also the comment on the thread i received the rep was not one I would have expected to be given any neg rep for, but I suspect it was given to me by someone with less than 5 posts. Is that possible? Can someone who has received neg rep confirm the colour it shows as?

Positive rep is Green.
Negative rep is Red.

A grey bar is shown on rep that is received from somone with no 'rep power' i.e. from someone with fewer than 5 posts as suggested. This type of rep has no effect.

Rep power is the amount of points the rep is worth based on three factors:
1. The number of posts the person giving the rep has.
2. The length they have been a member (rep power increases every year from the member's join date).
3. The amount of 'rep' the member has (calculated by the number of 'green bars' above your avatar).

Yeah, the Cemetery Dance forum uses the same system, which is how I know about it. A few conversations on this subject were raised over there a few years ago and the algorithm explained. I will try to find a link to it and post it here....

Interesting. I also had a grey rep and I'd assumed it was negative, but it had no comment. I was convinced that I wasn't nearly as tolerable as I thought I was.
