How about a discussion on "The Regulators"...by Mr. King.

Personally, I think this work is overlooked many times, and deals with Tak, a recurring entity in Mr. King's imagination. I saw there was a poll on Desperation vs. Regulators, and many people agree that Desperation was better...

I don't believe many have read it, so I am attempting to discuss this book and maybe help someone else out who may be deciding whether to spend time on it or not. I noticed some of our fellow members actually [Erin] liked Regulators more than Desperation...

So, let's talk about Tak...

I always thought of "Tak" as a sort of cousin to Dandelo and The Crimson King. JMHO

Yes, although his/its origins are attempted to be vaguely explained, there is a lot left to one's own deduction. I think Tak is also somehow akin to IT.

Tak is a god who likes to watch a western over and over again. When it's done he just starts it right over again. Why does that sound familiar?

His other favorite show is called Moto Cops or the Motocoppicemen as I like to call them. :)

I found Tak to be a much more defined character in the Regulators than in Desperation.

Part of me knew he was a very evil entity, however there is a side of me that when reading Regulators, likens him/it to a very naughty boy, I am unsure if this has been mentioned before, however I do know part of my reasoning is because he resides in a childs mind and therefore has a limited range of what he can do. However, when you read about him not liking 'toiletery?' there is a bunch of other stuff too, like how he assaults the aunt etc

However having said that most of Kings antagonists appear to have a very childish way about them, just look at Pennywise for a start (who some believe to be of the same mould as Tak) , The crimson king, who regularly throws 'tantrums'

Definitely! I thought Desperation started off as an excellent novel, for about the first one hundred pages or so -quite frightening, actually- but then it turned into too much religious mumbo jumbo. ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
The Regulators read like a typical Bachman novel, started off full speed, never slowed down and kept me on the edge of my seat till the very end.
Wish Marvel would tackle this one!

I just finished a re-read of this book and found it better then I remembered. It is certainly not in my SK top ten but it was action packed and a page turner.

I had a chance a few years back to read The Shotgunners, the script King wrote for Sam Peckinpah that is the starting point for The Regulators. It's interesting to see how he took what is essentially a straight Western and leveraged it into this supernatural thriller.

I preferred The Regulators to it's twinner Desperation, particularly the pacing. I've only re-read The Regulators and probably will again. Not sure Desperation will be read again.

I'd love to read this. Does anyone know how I might get a copy?

As far as I know, the only available copy is stored in Box 2318 of the Stephen King Collection at University of Maine, Orono, in the Raymond H. Fogler Library. I've never seen a copy.
