Not only is the signature about 20 times too big, there is no date underneath it. The real Stephen King always puts the date numerically under his signature when doing a book signing.

Sorry mate, but as far as I know he "Flat signs" all the time. I believe his earlier signings generally carried a date, for a while now he just signs. Of course, I'm no expert like some others here, but I think I am pretty accurate in this. At least in the ball park.

What in the world?

Steven King (sic) signed by Robin Williams (http://www.ebay.com/itm/INSOMNIA-STEVEN-KING-SIGNED-BY-ROBIN-WILLIAMS-W-COA-/111454029887?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item19f32d883f)

What does he have to do with Insomnia? I have no opinion on authenticity.

Robin Williams was in the movie Insomnia (2002), along with Al Pacino and Hilary Swank. However this movie has no bearing on Stephen King's Insomnia but is merely a remake of a Norwegian thriller with the same name that was made in 1997.

The listing on ebay is obviously a fake, as the real Robin Williams would have known this and wouldn't have signed the book. Utter shit! :FU:

I don't think it is good, but I am not 100% certain. As has been mentioned regarding this particular book (on this thread or elsewhere) the seller, antiqueshere, is a known seller of forgeries. It would be best to stay away, IMO.

The Tommyknockers looks as though it was traced and then the pencil marks erased. You can see that the paper in the written area is distressed and smudgy.

I just can't see myself ever buying a singed SK book off ebay unless it's a Signed/Limited. I have 13 signed King books, 10 are S/L and 3 are signed 1st Ed. trades, but I was physically there when King signed those 3 so I know they're real. If I bought a signed King book on eBay that wasn't a S/L then I don't think I could sleep at night. I'd be waking up and staring at the signature and calculating probabilities of its authenticity in my head. It is funny to see some of these obvious fakes though.

I understand what you're saying, but some good ones do pop up from time to time. If you ever do want to make a King signed purchase off EBay, don't hesitate to ask opinions here first. You are among the worlds best collectors with a good eyes for the right and wrong.

I gotta say that I think these are all good. The only one that gives me any pause is the DT VI but I think even that one is good. They all look like really rushed signatures for people who hassle him at the ballpark or coming out of a TV appearance.

I wouldn't pay even half what they are asking but I do think the sigs are legit.

I have continually provided any answers to questions about the signatures I have obtained from King, as well as shown similar signatures from other members to back up my signatures I sell. I can post full HQ photos of every single signed King book I have ever sold, or have for sale. Please explain which signatures I have sold in the past you believe were fakes. Otherwise this is an outlandish accusation.

This seller is asking $350 for the 1993 Easton Press edition of The Dead Zone...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/King-Stephen-THE-DEAD-ZONE-Easton-Press-/360780904295?

Look at the images the seller has added to the listing. It's clearly the less valuable 2004 re-print, but the seller is trying to pass it off as the 1993 first printing. See the link below to view the differences between the two editions:

What about this one? It's a little odd where the dedication is crossed out and started again. I don't know how SK's printed handwriting looks (the "oops" written in above it).

I've had it in my watch list for many days because I've been thinking the sig part of it looks just fine, and the "oops" makes it a little more interesting, but it's always smarter to check something suspect here first.

I think it likely that you just harassed a seller of a legitimate autograph.

carlosdetweiller
10-07-2014, 04:01 AM
I also think that the signature is real. But here is my personal approach to these "paparazzi attack" autographs that are signed on the run, usually in a jostling crowd, with the book held awkwardly and King trying to sign as quickly as he can to get in to a waiting car. They are not desirable to me and have no place in my collection. I will gladly wait until a book with a better example of King's signature comes along. Even if I am convinced that the signature is real there will always be a large percentage of collectors who will question the validity. There are quite a number who question the validity today and there will be a larger number (IMO) who will question it in the future if I ever wanted to sell it. It is absolutely not worth the hassle to have a book like that in my collection. I will never be personally proud of it and it likely will be difficult to sell. You have no documentation (i.e. ticket from a signing or whatever). You only have a third party's word that it is authentic.

Can you imagine trying to sell that book in 10 years and telling a potential buyer who has doubts "Yeah, well the guy I bought it from said he personally saw King sign it one day outside of CBS."

That book would have to come at an awful steep discount before I added to my collection for all the reasons Bob just mentioned. I don't question its legitimacy, but have no interest in the headaches that would come from trying to convince others if there ever was a point when I wanted to sell it. Good luck to the seller and whoever ends up buying it.

Think the bidders realize that this auction is for the TRAYCASE only?

At $200+probably not....

Well the experts agree. I really thought it was not real... but I agree with you all about buying it and trying to move it down the road... You would be questioned for sure. That is the sig you want to snap a photo of him signing the book and include it with the listing! It is a brutal signature. King had such a beautiful signature back in the day didnt eh? Wish it was still that nice....

As I said on the CD forums, this strikes me as a no. I don't know how he could have gotten it signed before the event; it clearly wasn't purchased from Rainy Day Books (that's a BN sticker), the signature is in the wrong spot on the page, and the signature looks funny.

Just an idle thought, but I don't think I would add any King recent releases (last two or three years) that were signed to my collection unless it were signed "In Person" or from a valued member here. His signature has gotten terrible (Understandably) over the years. I was never an "expert" to begin with however, I feel that I am better than most (outside this forum) at spotting a forgery. My "Revival" sports a sig in which, "King" is virtually reduced to "Kg" with a squiggle in between. Like I said, just a thought.

blaze by richard bachman (stephen king signed) 1st edition/1st print w/coa (http://www.ebay.com/itm/blaze-by-richard-bachman-stephen-king-signed-1st-edition-1st-print-w-coa-/181593772333?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item2a47d5112d)

Some poor sucker already bid on this:
From a Buick SIGNED by Stephen King (2002, Hardcover) (http://www.ebay.com/itm/From-a-Buick-SIGNED-by-Stephen-King-2002-Hardcover-/251730170402?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item3a9c499222)

I watch this thread with a combination of bemusement and befuddlement. Even a tiny bit of research, of comparing the these books' (and all the others' in this thread) sigs to King's (which is all over the Net at reputable sites), would show both to be poor attempts at trickery...I don't understand why anyone would spend dozens, if not hundreds, of dollars on something that they have no knowledge on and apparently don't even spend a second verifying.

I'm always worried that a well meaning family member will fall prey to this and buy me a fake in an attempt to get me something special.

Tell them about the danger and then tell them about Bett's.

Yep, this is why I am responsible for buying my own gifts. Not that I mind... :P

Before I joined this site my wife bought me a "signed" BCE of Carrie. When I unwrapped it I was sad (but thanked her) because the signature wasn't close. I confirmed it later on this site. People can be extreme scum bags. I have never in my life ripped anyone off and I cannot wrap my mind around how people can do this.

Any thoughts on this one? Doing a little holiday shopping for myself, and I thought this looked pretty good, especially if I can get it for around the current price. But I don't usually buy on ebay unless it's a S/L, so I need experts!!! Thanks!

And before you guys mention it, I've already sent an email asking if it's a 1st/1st.

Looks good to me. A fine example of his current sig. Also, it appears it has the right number line and DJ to be a 1/1
