What does the board think of this one? Heritage Auctions is very legit but I have some doubt as to the veracity of this signature. It doesn't look typical for 1977. Also, King didn't start crossing his sevens until his sojourn to England later in 1977. At this time his habit was to write out the month rather than use a number for the month. I have some real concerns about this one. Other opinions/thoughts?

I do agree Heritage normally is very legit. In this case, however, I DO NOT feel this signature is even close to a 1977 King signature. Something isn't right here. I don't like how the date looks compared to the signature. Almost like a different pencil or pen was used. Could be my bad eyesight though.

I'm on the run today so I don't have time to compare all the signatures I have in my database with this one. Will do tomorrow to see what I come up with.

I have an actual copy of the signed TGWLTG that was given out at the NLR dinner, and King's signature was on a different page. Nevertheless, I don't like the sig in her book anyway.....

What does the board think of this one? Heritage Auctions is very legit but I have some doubt as to the veracity of this signature. It doesn't look typical for 1977. Also, King didn't start crossing his sevens until his sojourn to England later in 1977. At this time his habit was to write out the month rather than use a number for the month. I have some real concerns about this one. Other opinions/thoughts?

Then again, I have personal knowledge of a signing event in which some of the sigs came after he had shaken and zipped, If the fans had not had ball point pens a "sharpie" or a crayon would definitely have sufficed!! LOL LOL Which is to say that sometimes you get 'em when you can and he's willing!!


Edit: For the referenced signing event, during the "Official" signing he used a sharpie. The event coordinators often leave at lot to be desired. It's not like he has a "Pen Guy" for these events!! LOL I'm just saying is all. I used to use a "Mont Blanc" for all my "official" signatures as a corporate officer, but I could see that getting old really quick with his volume of sigs.

What makes me sad is this seller has two offers showing on auction. I know I know, everyone is saying the buyer needs to do research. I have a feeling the buyers are probably not collectors but someone wanting to give someone a Christmas gift of a signed King book. Discussion between Brian Freeman and myself


Yeah, we sell bundles of the stamping dies, page proofs, binding/stamping approvals, etc, from time to time. Usually they're only offered to the CDCC since we have so few sets to offer.

The pages from Riding the Bullet are a signature that just happens to also have the signature sheet tipped at the front. (For those who don't know, a signature in printing is a bundle of 8 or 16 pages, sometimes 32 although that's getting big.) I had 5 or 10 signatures leftover from the printer and I tossed them into one of the deals because I didn't have any use for them.

Some collectors really dig these bundles since you get parts of the production process that are unique or rarely seen outside the office. They're certainly not for everyone, though.

Not a proof, although I wouldn't be surprised if someone thought it was.

It's a signature of either 8 or 16 pages (can't recall which) that would have gone into a finished book but wasn't needed.

It's the signature from the book that includes the signature sheet.

The signatures of 8 or 16 pages each are printed separately and then bundled together to form the book.

In the case of Riding the Bullet, the printer ran out of the hardcover bindings (which are cut to size and stamped with the hot foil stamping before the collected signatures are bound into them) so there were some unbound signatures left over, which they sent me.

I guess I could have had my hand-binder create a super custom edition for my collection with the leftovers, but I didn't.

With experience which comes with time it gets easy to spot fakes.... many are too obvious... Being sure of authentic ones is a bit more difficult.

If you look at the Umass video, i remember hearing the host saying that King will sign the 2 chairs. It looks similar to the one that was on stage, but cant be sure i guess

Just received a book from "awesomebookusa". It was shipped in a plastic mailing bag. Not a padded envelope, let alone a box. Just a plastic bag with an address label. It wasn't signed as advertised. The condition wasn't "good". A 2" rip on the DJ is not good. Every corner and edge bumped and bent is not good. Grrr. I suppose I can't complain too much, it was only $2 but I can't even use the signature page for a different book. Complete waste of time.

My opinion may not be a popular one however this sig has what I see as a flaw too often lately in sigs accepted as good on too many occasions.
I have not specifically pointed out what I see as the flaw as it concerns me it would be an easy flaw to correct for any who are creating fakes to sell.
If you review all sigs in Stephen King Signatures 1980-Present thread you may recognize the flaw I see in this and other sigs many have noted as okay.
I have reviewed countless recent sigs of mine as well as others which I know are real, signed in front of me or others and have not found this particular feature to exist even if signed on the run or in awkward moments.
It is appearing in a number of books especially by new or repeat sellers.
In fairness I may be wrong and perhaps there is some reason for what I am interpreting as a flaw, however until I see something I know to be legit with this characteristic, I will stay away from any with it.
