They are facsimile signatures. That particular edition gets listed by novice sellers as "signed" frequently. It is not.

Thanks guys!

I recently bought bag of bones so called signed book by a seller who claimed he recieved the book from a woman who lives in NH and knows King personaly and had him sign her collection also won an auction from the same seller for a "signed faithful wich i did not pay him for yet. after being contacted by a darktower.org member and taking a closer at other books he has for sale i think the sigs are very suspicious. i will post the links to the auction. please tell me what you think. If you read the auction he pretty much admits right out that these are not authentic signatures. "What appears to be King's signature is inked on the page, but our research has not conclusively determined that it is indeed his authentic autograph."

That's CYA for "Hey, King didn't really sign this book."

Simon, this is unfortunate. Per Ric's comment, there has been a lot of discussion about this guy in the forum over the last month. He is a blatant forger and has been reported to eBay on several occasions. He actually changed his verbiage to include that BS that divemaster indicates regarding the fact that the signatures are not authentic.

Going to be hard not to pay for the 2nd book given that his verbiage in the listing warns the buyer regarding the authenticity....

This is also being discussed in the Ebay BS thread. From now on unless its a s/l limited or from someone on this site im not taking a chance again. Its not like he accidently recieved this book and didnt know. he is continuing to list fraudulant stephen king books. Im not loseing anymore sleep over it, what comes around goes around. eventually it will come back to him. Anyway twisted nadine was nice enough to offer me a legit copy of bag of bones for my collection so at least things are looking up:)

Yeah, saw your posts. A lot of times sellers dont do their homework before listing the item. I try to give them the benefit of doubt before accusing. This seller replied: "I found this book at a Goodwill in Omaha. I am not an expert on handwriting...but I will take a look at other signatures and compare" so assuming he cares about his rep as an Ebay seller you would think he would have done his comparison and removed the item by now...

I tend to agree with you but there is no shortage of idiots on eBay. I've never liked the term "first edition thus" but, if used correctly, it can be descriptive and useful. I'm not an expert on this but to my mind it means the book has been modified in some way and republished. So it may have a new introduction, new illustrations, added text or something else. When the modified or updated book is published it can be called "first edition thus" if the "thus" is then defined by describing the new material. The seller in this case is making a mockery of the term and is THUS an idiot.

Bev Vincent
06-28-2011, 07:05 AM
I think the term pertains to a revised edition (the revision could simply be a new cover) from a different publisher or printing house than the original. Otherwise it would just be a revised edition.

Room 217 Caretaker
06-28-2011, 07:10 AM
"First thus" is a phrase used by book sellers, publishers, etc. to describe a book which may be considered a first edition and/or first printing, but which has been available previously in a slightly different form. A true first edition is the original, first printing of a given book, while a first thus is the first printing of a new version of that book. This classification can come about for any number of reasons, though often times it has to do with a new translation of a particular work, the involvement of a new (different) publisher, or with a new forward or introduction....

Robert Fulman
06-28-2011, 07:32 AM
And at the end of the day, no number line and no price means that this is almost definitely a book club edition that could have been printed anytime between 1975 and now.

Yes, it is mental. For the record, the invitations to these buyers are very professional and shows them my concern of what is happening on Ebay. I don't, and never would make them feel bad for the purchase. Just trying to help.

Before anyone blames Ebay for allowing this to keep happening needs to understand, Ebay is just an avenue to move products, a tool if you will. It's ultimately up to the seller AND buyer to do his/her homework.

Not all sellers know they are selling forged copies. Most do the right thing and investigate. However, like this seller we are discussing, as well as the one who's name will remain redacted..haha, (who clearly sold 2 King forged books as well as some Obama & Bush forged books) will get his/her just deserts. It takes time to build a case and the more they sell, the more names that get added to the task force managers list to support the case.

So again, I invite sellers and buyers here to help educate them. I can't change the world, but it sure feels good to help a few people along the way.

Maybe that buyer doesnt want to know they're fakes. The seller says "Books do not come with a COA and No refunds (ebay rules and regulations)." So knowing he wont get a refund he's not pursuing it. I sure would. And it can't possibly be "ebay rules and regulations" to not issue a refund??

GOOOD question. I have asked the seller, from where it comes. Wait for answer...
I always think. As collector, when i know that i meet SK or i´am sure that i become an signature from ... SK (in the good old times when SK signs books, send to him)
WHY in the hell i want a signature in an ugly lousy Cujo softcover.
There are only a few 100% save original SK signed German books.
The limited to 25 signed Duddits-Dreamcatcher
The ONE and only The MIST - NEBEL Edition Phantasia
One-my signed Das Mädchen-TGWLTG German ARC that SK signed on his Lisey´s UK tour

But ... maybe this book with the signatur:

Not sure why anyone had a paperback signed, but based on the handwriting in the inscription, I'd say the signature is authentic.

Just become the answer from the seller.
He says, its one of the ´good old time 90ths´ sending to King, become it signed back ... books... But the sellers name is NOT CARLOS.....
Only reason for sending an softcover...... DELIVERY Cost´s to and from USA....
An small softcoverbook... you can send to the USA as ´letter´ for 6-8 euros, an hardcover for 35+ Euros

The only reason I can think of to have a paperback signed is opportunity. You just happen to have your reading copy paperback with you when you run into the author. Paperback or not I would ask for a signature. But I dont see the point in mailing in a paperback for sig. For a few bucks more why not the hardback?

Recently George Beahm sold a whole bunch of stuff on ebay, and our favorite questionable signature seller snatched up pretty much all of the Buy It Now items, then relisted them at 5 to 10 times more than he paid for them. Capitalism at its finest, I suppose. PT was wrong, though, as no suckers jumped on the new deals. I will say though, that posting Mr. Beahm's return address label (http://cgi.ebay.com/STEPHEN-KING-STORY-1st-HC-SIGNED-EDITION-SUPER-RARE-/140576418579?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item20bb01eb13), even if the picture was a bit out of focus and most of the address was covered, seems douche-y at best.

He is a classic scumbag. How do you think the buyer thoward_nbi (http://myworld.ebay.com/thoward_nbi) is going to feel when he discovers that the thousand dollars he spent on "signed" books was thrown into the trash? I have no sympathy for him myself, I sent him a heads-up back in June and he actually went back and bought MORE forgeries after I warned him!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370495077253&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

That is clearly the slipcase version pictured (yes it is stock photo but he didn't have to use the slipcase picture if that isn't what you are getting) and Otto discusses the books to be fine. Well, no slipcase arrived with the books. Seller has become extremely rude and keeps asking "how in the world do you see a slipcase in that picture?"

A very RUDE seller and could care less about his customers. BEWARE! never NEVER NEVER again

Again, this is just my opinion here. I don't like it. Here are five areas that jumped out at me very quick. The other two, the upside down frown at the bottom of the K and too many pressure points. However, some of these could be the type of pen used. Just my opinion though. I wouldn't buy it.

Excellent point Ralph......

Look at, what appears to be, the # of "stops" and "starts" from the "t" to the "e" in Stephen. I see three points that appear as if, when the pen hit the paper to start the next stroke, it bled slightly larger, in the form of a dot.....

Should be even stroke lines if the pen wasn't lifted off the page and placed back down mid-stroke.....

I think it is traced.....

I had a recent fire sale on all my extra Dark Tower books (so I could buy Sins of the Fathers off Shannon). This guy bought most of my stuff; the prices he is now asking for the items he bought off me are insane, and his item conditions are questionable. For example, I sold him two W&G firsts for $70 (total). The books were both pretty loose, had dog-eared pages and reeked of smoke. One of them had a gouge in the dust jacket spine. I described my books extremely accurately, including the smell. Anyway, it's hard to see but in this auction (http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEPHEN-KING-WIZARD-GLASS-TRADE-LIMITED-SUPER-RARE-NM-/140593577318?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item20bc07bd66#ht_500wt_1413) he is selling a W&G as Brand New/Nice/Perfect/Good DJ; if you look close, you'll see that the DJ has a gouge through the letters "ST" on the spine. I feel bad for anyone who buys that book at that price. I have no problem with the re-selling, but pretending that this book is "perfect" is just silly.

That is pretty bad. Thanks also for pointing out the seller to us, Robert. He has lots of King items listed and I had considered bidding on a few of them. One of the the Viking Gunslinger 1st. Robert Fulman

I sold him Viking DT I - IV, but they were book club editions. None had prices on the dust jackets, but II and IV did have full printing number lines. Given that right now he is listing I and IV, showing the number line only for IV and showing the price for neither, they could be the ones I sold him. The books I sold were in very nice shape, but if you really want then you should just consider signing up for the doubleday book club.

I kindly asked the Rose Madder auction person to pull the listing because the signature WAS FAKE. The second note told him that I was giving him/her the chance to do the right thing before I reported them. The last note (didn't get to send) told them that I'd just love to buy the book, pay for it and then sue them for knowingly selling a book with a fake signature or having a reasonable suspicion that the signature was not legitimate.

They pulled the auction with about 20 minutes left. I hope that means the bidder isn't stuck with the book. If not, I'll buy next time and they can deal with someone who just HATES this practice. Won't get them all but I will get a few of the pricks out there!

This isn't a SK related item but I figured I'd put this here with hope that somebody can give me some advice.

I bought something last night through Ebay for my daughter. It's basically a cloak from a cartoon character that she likes and she wants it for a halloween costume. It was a buy-it-now so I paid for it through paypal. The seller is from China.

This morning had a few emails.

Follow ebay's advice and contact the seller. You need to wait seven days before you can open a case anyway. It basically comes down to one question: do you think you'll get the item or not?

jhanic

It sounds as if you've been scammed. I'd complain to eBay immediately and demand your money back from the seller. If you paid via a Paypal credit card, also file a claim with your credit card company.

Hey guys, not sure what's going on, but be wary with this auction:

Stephen King's Full Dark; RARE one of a kind remarqued (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stephen-Kings-Full-Dark-RARE-one-kind-remarqued-/110741601290?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item19c8b6bc0a)

The auction is for a thrice remarqued Full Dark, No Stars gift edition, and the auction itself has no pictures of the remarques. I contacted the seller asking to see pictures of the remarques and he sent me four pictures and they were from the Artist Edition S/L of Dark Forces (the signature page, and three remarques ... and to the left of two of the remarques you can see ... DARK ... and FORCES, lol)

So ... I asked what was going on, that was a few hours ago. No response yet. Might be a simple mix up, but I didn't want anyone to get screwed when I could have said something. I will update if and when he responds. Thanks.

Seller responded with new pics of the three remarques, they look quite good. He said it was a mix up.

That works for me. :)

Damnit! I was going to place a bid but didn't get a look at the ending time. I just assumed it was later. Fudge! The remarques were pretty nice too. Damnitdamnitdamnit!

No kidding. They had it listed a few weeks ago with a starting bid of $650, then changed to a BIN/Best Offer listing at $700.

I asked the Seller several questions.

The Cell was bought several years ago. I truly think that one is legit.....

The Stand looks pretty good as well but it is a BOOK CLUB EDITION

The other items are from her Grandfather's Collection and look a bit "suspect" to me.....

My two cents......

My opinion here:

The Stand is too pretty of a signature. Don't like it. Sort of straight up and down as well. A nice attempt though.

Cell (wish we had a closer shot) it looks like the g was added after, and the loop is wrong. It sort of looks like an 07 signature attempt. Now, it very well could be a rushed, stalking King signature.

All her other sigs are suspect as well. I agree with Gretchen, because of the others, "when in doubt don't pull your wallet out".

Again, just my opinion

This isn't a SK related item but I figured I'd put this here with hope that somebody can give me some advice.

I bought something last night through Ebay for my daughter. It's basically a cloak from a cartoon character that she likes and she wants it for a halloween costume. It was a buy-it-now so I paid for it through paypal. The seller is from China.

This morning had a few emails.
