I have one last prerequisite for being my bestest friend. It's important that I see your answer to this question (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=411&highlight=favorite+book+of+the+series). Now, you may think that there is no correct answer but you'd be wrong. There is one incorrect answer and six correct answers. I hope you make the right choice.

Seriously though...it's nice to have you on the boards. There are lots of cool threads in the Mid-World forum and all throughout the site. Have fun finding them all. :)

Hmmm, okay, here's my rating of the entire series from best to less best (none of them are worse!)...

1) The Dark Tower (just because it made me so weepy)
2) Wolves of the Calla
3) The Waste Lands
4) The Drawing of the Three
5) The Gunslinger
6) Song of Susannah
7) Wizard and Glass

Do I pass?

And I doubt I could read them all if I lived to be a hundred. I had over 1,000 new posts since the last time I was here two days ago! This is a chatty bunch!

Oh, I do love me some Spike! He's my favorite! I may have to break down and see that movie even though I have never seen DBZ. I had to check with my kids to see if it was a TV show or comic book or what. I'm all old and junk. 8)

CPU reminded me someone should post Joss Whedons Dr. Horrible (http://www.drhorrible.com/) link. The first two acts are up and are free. The third act comes out July 19th and on the 20th they are no longer free. Check it out. Anything with both Neil Patrick Harris or Nathan Fillion has to be good stuff!

I liked Dr. Horrible.

That ending though! Trust Whedon to play on the humor then tug the rug out from beneath you dropping you to a dark place. Yet... it worked. And to think Bad Horse is actually a horse! Hee hee.

Oh and the comics, I bought Those Left Behind relatively recently, and I liked it a lot. I only recently found out there were other comics on the way too. Particularly looking forward to Shepherd Book's back-story!

I'm really looking forward to Dollhouse! There is a great interview with Joss Whedon over at io9 (http://io9.com/5031309/exclusive-joss-whedon-tackles-darwin) that they did during comic-con. The answers he gave to their questions really cemented my belief that he (Whedon) really knows how to create great TV shows. I just hope he gets the chance to let this one be as successful (well maybe long-lived is a better term) as Angel and Buffy.

Yeah, I have the Dr. Horrible eps on my iPod, and the soundtrack.

So I've been watching Angel in the mornings the past couple months, and have made it through the cycle. I never got to see an entire episode (unless I was home sick), but seeing the last 15 minutes of one and the first 15 minutes of the next got me a good idea of the story arc, and I loved it. Now I'm sad I avoided this show back when it was still going. Yay for reruns.

Stand back everyone, nothing here to see. Just imminent danger and in the middle of it me. Yes, Captain Hammer's here, hair blowing in the breeze. The day needs my saving expertise. Man's got to do what a man's got to do. Seems destiny ends with me saving you. The only doom that's looming is in loving me to death. I'll give you a second to catch your breath.

Did anyone notice that Nathan Fillion has a new series getting ready to premiere on ABC called "Castle"? Storyline looks pretty interesting. A murder/mystery writer who gets a copy cat murderer killing after the manner of his books. Fillion teems up with a NYC detective lady to solve the crimes.

i'm lucky enough to have sky plus and sci fi, so i have watched all the angel eps i missed first time round. would still love to get buffy and angel box sets though as i cant seem to find the series of buffy except on FX and its close to the end so dont really want to start watching it now.

so if any british chaps / chappettes see buffy from ep 1 advertised let me know

sci fi does angel in a loop, much as sky 1 does stargate in a loop so am ok there

Buffy Relaunching Without Whedon, Gellar...Regard for Fans?

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Blame Robert Pattinson. And, for that matter, Captain Kirk.

What with vampires and franchise relaunches suddenly all the rage, plans for a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie have inevitably come to pass, with the rights holders of the franchise announcing plans for a new Sunnydale-set film.

But there is a catch.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film, which will neither be a sequel nor prequel but a relaunch, is moving ahead with absolutely no involvement from film and series mastermind Joss Whedon. It will also fail to feature TV's Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and will in fact have no connection to the long-running series—meaning Angel, Willow, Xander and Spike will also be MIA.

That sound you just heard was the Whedonverse imploding.

The brain boxes behind the already fan-angering remake are Fran Rubel Kuzui, the director of the 1992 box-office bomb (which starred Kristy Swanson as the titular slayer abetted by Luke Perry), and her husband, Kaz Kuzui. Kuzui Enterprises has retained the rights to the franchise since their ill-fated film outing.

The idea behind the new reboot is to maintain the show's mythology while introducing a new slayer and Hellmouth-threatened group of pals, building on the idea that each generation has its own vampire slayer.

If all goes according to plan—and it's shaping up to be a rather large if—Kuzui is looking to franchise the film.

As for Whedon, he has yet to comment on the film's development. While Kuzui said they have not ruled out inviting cult king Whedon—still very much active in the Buffyverse, having shepherded several Buffy comic books to best-seller status in recent years—to take part in the film, they have not yet spoken to him about their plans.

The nicest thing I can say here is:

I hope these goddamned motherfucking bastards burn in an eternal hell. In fact if there isn't a god let's invent one just so he can create a place to torture these bitches properly. :grouphug:

and then we shall make them eat their own innards.
i mean why? why re launch? has no one in hollywoodland got an original idea these days?:pullhair:

And this is super fun.... EWs top 25 Whedonverse Episodes (http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20302134_20307632,00.html?cnn=yes)

ETA : I would have to agree with this :
1. ''THE BODY''
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 5 : If there's any argument to be made for the short-sighted irrelevance of the Emmy Awards — which marginalized Buffy for the entirety of its run — this episode should be exhibit A. Expertly written and directed by Whedon, ''The Body'' is all about the emotional devastation caused by the sudden, tragically natural death of Buffy's mother, Joyce (Kristine Sutherland). Deft and heartbreaking, ''The Body'' isn't just the best episode in the Whedonverse: It might be the best hour of television we've ever seen.

However, I'd have had HUSH and OMWF higher on the list.

Via EW / Dollhouse has been cancelled.

This has been a busy week for cancellations. The latest addition to the TV graveyard: Dollhouse.

According to multiple insiders, Fox has informed Joss Whedon that it will not be ordering additional installments of his low-rated drama beyond the current 13-episode order. On the bright side, the network still plans to burn off the remaining unaired episodes beginning in December. Hey, it’s something.

Dollhouse has been averaging a mere 3 million viewers this season. Last season — when fan support, together with significant budget cuts, helped it to get an odds-defying second-year pickup — the show averaged 4.7 million.

UPDATE: Whedon just posted the following statement on Whedonesque.com: “I don’t have a lot to say. I’m extremely proud of the people I’ve worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you’ll agree in the coming months. I’m grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again. I’m off to pursue Internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now, there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear. Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again.”

OK, i know i'm a little late on the topic here, but here goes....

A Buffy remake? Erm, what the fuck? What the fuckety fuck? What the fuckfuckfuckedyfuckeffingfuckshit? Peas and Rice, i've heard a lot of stupid ideas in my time, but that really is the dumbest idea ever! Let's hope this gets ruined before it even truly begins!

To add to the favourite episode discussion, i've gotta say that The Zeppo rates pretty highly with me. It's when the show becomes confidant enough to mock itself slightly, without hamming it up, so to speak. I just love the whole idea of the gang facing "the biggest threat they've ever faced", and yet the story focuses on someone who had up to that point only been seen as a comedy sidekick. Total genius!

In another response....
Joss really lost his talent towards the end of Angel. Dollhouse was pretty bad and am not surprised it was canceled. Let's get something new, with new people...not a bunch of ex-series regulars from other shows.

Although I haven't quite seen every episode of Angel or Buffy, gotta say I do agree with ya JB. Angel was dark, mature, but best of all, it never took itself too seriously. I think the moment I thought, "Yep, this is definitely better than Buffy", was that moment in Season 5 which had Angel and Spike getting shot at by a mother and child with machine guns in slow motion. Even cooler was that the two vampires with souls were wearing their trademark trenchcoats at the time! A petty reason to prefer one from the other, perhaps, but an awesome one!

It's ironic that I do prefer Angel to Buffy though, considering that for the longest time, I was deeply skeptical of it being half as good as Buffy. The fact that it was always shown at midnight didn't exactly help in me randomly catching it, either. (No joke!)

Hmmmm. I will definitely have to check them out.

You know what sucks? Comshit Cable has moved the TV guide channel to premium. Money grabbing bastards.

So there's no flipping to the guide to see what's on TV at the moment. I'm sure that I've missed a lot of good shit because my attitude has been this: if I have to log on to the internet to see what's on, I'm watching something on the internet and not cable.

I guess I need to reset TV Guide online.

Believe me, I realize what a petty bitch that is. That's why I don't bitch about it so much. *snicker*

Come to think of it, I'm not sure when we watched more TV that we really watched any channels other than History, Discovery, SciFi (not so much SyFy), and Cartoon - except ABC for LOST (and that's really only me).

Just checked - at least TV Guide online still works.

I loved the beginning, "we help the helpless" seasons. IMO they were funnier and better. Never really liked the whole Connor story arc, but everything else was golden. .

me too, i loved series 1 (doyle **sigh) and series 2.
dont get me wrong i loved all 5 and was sad to see it go, but these two stand out as the two that i loved the most before it all got bogged down with connor, and wolfram and hart etc etc etc

Really? At first I HATED Illyria. Then i started to like her. Especially that episode where she keeps kicking Spike's ass. Joss Whedon directing "Avengers" for Marvel
By Borys Kit

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Joss Whedon is in final negotiations to direct the movie version of Marvel's all-star super-hero team "The Avengers."

Whedon's name first surfaced on Web site iesb.net in early April as being on the shortlist of directors Marvel was considering for the gig. He quickly and quietly became the only candidate, with reports surfacing Tuesday he was in talks.

Marvel had no comment.

"The Avengers" is the culmination of Marvel's movies and the storylines featuring the company's individual heroes: Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man and Thor; other Marvel comic book mainstays include the Wasp, the Scarlet Witch, the Vision and Hawkeye although it remains to be seen which of those characters will make the cut.

Marvel's dealmaking with its main actors in those previous movies provided for their inclusion in starring roles in "Avengers." That means Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evan (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) are expected to take part.

The involvement of Ed Norton, who portrayed Bruce Banner/Hulk, is less clear; the last Hulk movie, released by Universal in 2008, saw the actor clash with the company during post-production, leaving future association in doubt.

Marvel executives have a busy time ahead: "Iron Man 2" opens May 7; they are in production on "Thor" in New Mexico; and "Captain America" begins shooting in England this summer.

"Avengers" is expected to begin shooting in early 2011. Paramount, which has handled several of the company's recent pictures, presumably will distribute, though Marvel itself is now wholly owned by Disney.

Whedon is well-regarded in the comic community for creating "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," spin-off show "Angel," and cult sci-fi show "Firefly," and he directed many of the shows' episodes. The one feature he directed -- the big-screen version of "Firefly" called "Serenity" -- received good reviews but failed commercially.

Hiring Whedon as the director of "Avengers" would continue Marvel's out-of-the-box thinking when choosing directors (and actors, for that matter). Jon Favreau, now a superstar director thanks to the first "Iron Man," was considered a fish-out-of-water choice for that movie, having previously shot the well-reviewed box-office bomb "Zathura."

Texas has quite a few largers cons, mostly comic cons, of course. That might be within 500 miles... of course, for that much in gas, it might be cheaper to fly somewhere!!

NYC is about 2.5 hours drive from me, but I can't make the con this weekend, unfortunately.

I've seen a several of the Buffy cast at comic cons before. They're very nice and very engaging with fans..

I was at a panel with Eliza Dushku and it was an absolute blast. She was beautiful, and funny, and charming as all get out.

Seth Green is cool. A little full of himself, but sarcastic as hell and a good personality for a crowd of fans.

Emma Caulifield, adorable. Very sweet and very beautiful in person. Kind and took time with fans while signing.

Nic Brandon is very engaging and again, funny as hell. Not my cup of tea, but handsome, too. :P

10-01-2010, 07:18 AM
Oh, now you're just making me extremely envious, pam! I've never been to a buffy con, but i really do need to keep an eye out if ever one pops up in the UK at all.

Also, gotta love Eliza Dushku. One of the most beautiful women in the world right now! Nice to hear her attitude with the fans is as good as she looks!

turtlex
10-01-2010, 07:25 AM
DD - Eliza was awesome!! It was technically a Dollhouse panel, but she was like "I know you all have Buffy questions" and then continued to take questions on everything!! She was so funny and self-effacing. And yeah, in person, just gorgeous.

I've seen famous people in person, and sometimes they look completely different than their "on screen" selves, and not in a good way, but not Eliza. She's just beautiful.

And you know, as beautiful as she was, she's so funny and sharp as hell. Very smart and funny. You cannot beat that combination.

I'm lucky because so many of my favorite shows sort of cross-over to comics, that when I got to a comic con, I get to see a bunch of my favorite tv/movie stars as well.

DoctorDodge
10-01-2010, 07:32 AM
Yeah, it's always off-putting to see your heros in real life: if you don't want them to match their tv characters, you at least want them to be respectful to the fans, otherwise there's the fear of some of your favourite shows/characters being ruined for ya if they are total arseholes in real life.

I've only been to a couple of conventions, and haven't met any of my favourite stars at either of them, but if there's one convention i'd love to go to, it's a Torchwood one. Doctor Who sounds fun, but i've watched clips online of Torchwood panels, and John Barrowman always seems to be the coolest: cheeky, funny, and always smiling, (with the occasional snog with his co-stars,) that's how you want your favourite actors to be like in real life!

Also, if James Marsters was there for his role as Captain John Hart, that would be the icing on the cake!

turtlex
10-01-2010, 10:37 AM
I've had some disappointments at cons, but honestly - they're few and far between. I think when "stars" agree to appear at conventions they understand what they're in for, for the most part. Most all of them have been very charming and engaging.

Ted Raimi, he gave a great talk and his autograph line hardly moved at all, because when he started signing, he was chatting up all the fans and truly engaged everyone there to see him. It was wonderful.

Same deal with Renée O'Connor. I was lucky enough to be at her first convention appearance ever, and it was a treat.

I really encourage everyone to attend a con if you can, especially if you have a real affinity to the show featured. Xena, Buffy, Star Trek, Comic Cons, Autograph Shows ... they're all a real good time. Panels are lots of fun, and if you have the guts to chat it up with a star in the autograph line - then really, it's a wonderful experience.

DoctorDodge
10-01-2010, 10:45 AM
Oh, i have every plan of attending a dr who convention at some point in my life. It was fun enough when I went with my best mate to a comic convention and got a sketch done of my 2000AD t-shirt by an artist who had worked for 2000AD, and I got to see some of the actual models they used back in the classic series of Doctor Who. Seeing K-9 was the most awesome! And I had just as great a time when I went to a dr who exhibition (yep, we actually have several of those in the UK), so I really want to combine the two and go to a Who convention eventually. That would just be epic for me to do!

Joss Whedon not involved in Buffy remake

Original Buffy Kristy Swanson wants to be part of reboot
November 24, 2010, 6:11pm

MANILA, Philippines – Fans of Joss Whedon might not welcome Warner Bros.’ announcement last Tuesday that they are going to do a remake of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” The reason: Whedon will not be involved in it anymore.

A studio spokeswoman says the project is in the earliest stages of development. It hasn't even been green-lit yet, and there's no director or star attached. However, it is said that the remake will have a new writer: Whit Anderson, a 29-year-old actress-turned-writer.

Whedon shared via email with E! Online his reaction to the announcement.

This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly.

TV’s Buffy Sarah Michelle Gellar couldn't be reached for a comment. However, Kristy Swanson, who originally played the character in the 1992 “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” film, said she supports the remake. In fact, she would love to be a part of it.

"Let Buffy live. Why not? If they wanted me to be a part of it, I think that would be fantastic and that it would be a blast. There are die-hard Joss Whedon fans who absolutely love him to death, and rightly so. He’s a brilliant man, no doubt. But I love everything Buffy. I don’t care who’s doing it,” said Swanson in an article on NYMag.com's Vulture. (With reports from Associated Press)

How retarded is that. The only reason Swanson wants in is because her career has gone to hell, and Buffy is the only thing people remember her from.

I really enjoyed Dollhouse. The first season was a little meh in spots, but the rest of it was awesome up until they had to rush the ending.

There certainly wasn't any self doubt or concepts as the villains in that show. There were some very badass and insane Actives and a mega-corporation instead.

That comic is funny, but I can't think of any Whedon show that was like that. They all had pretty clear bad guys in them. *shrug*

Let me guess: at number 1 was the statement, "Battlestar Galactica was a big pile of shit!"?

Whether I thought the remake was one of the best scifi shows of the past ten years (judging by the mini-series and season one, at least) is entirely immaterial, it's still the best way to start a nerd argument!

I've watched the first four episodes of Firefly and I'm not quite entirely sure what the appeal is. Could someone just tell me why they love it so much? Maybe then I'll see more good in it.

Right now all I can think is, "Jesus, Mal, stop hitting people for FIVE SECONDS please!"

DoctorDodge

The key appeal I think is it's mix of science fiction, western, action and humour. I really enjoyed it, but if you haven't seen the appeal of it so far, you probably won't have that "aha!" moment. There's been a couple of really popular shows that, no matter how much I watched or how much it was explained to me, I just couldn't get into.

I kind of feel like it is Cowboy Bebop, only with more (and better) female characters. So, I enjoy that aspect, but I feel like it's trying too hard or something.

Also I hate River. Seriously. Her whole storyline bores me to death.

Just watched Serenity! I really liked it, and it made me like River because she actually did something. My only complaints are 1. Jayne's hat did not reappear, and 2. Wash. :(

Also, maybe they should have let River deal with the assassin guy instead of trying to protect her, but that would have made the movie about 20 minutes long.

Does the "Whedon-verse" now include "The Avengers" or still just Buffy, Spike, Angel and Cordelia????

Joss Whedon explains why The Avengers won’t feel Whedonesque (http://io9.com/5892746/joss-whedon-explains-why-the-avengers-wont-feel-whedonesque-plus-the-latest-on-game-of-thrones-and-walking-dead)

I would like everyone's help if you have a minute to aid my obsessive-compulsive shopping. I have narrowed down my Jayne Hat Hunt to four links (to be fair, the last one's page hasn't been updated in a while, so I'm not sure it's still available) and would like opinions on which one looks closest to the real thing. I'm thinking right now this would be a great Halloween costume if I pair it with a Jayne shirt, I've seen some Blue Sun shirts around.

Thanks for the input!

I've narrowed it down to 2 or 3, there's a Blue Sun shirt on Busted Tees, and my friend told me to go buy a Nerf gun for Vera.

I am gonna rock this. :D

:P The hat was just because I NEED a cunning hat, I love it so much, and then I thought, "when am I actually going to wear this?" and decided to make it a full-on costume. I also just need a vent for the way I've gotten ridiculously obsessed over this series in the past few weeks. (Seriously, I'm getting a little insane.)

I'll probably end up wearing the outfit around my apartment, though. So it's a little of both?

I think we all would love to see a picture of your final costume!

And I think I remember you saying you didn't really care for it when you first started watching it
You're also really making me want to go and do a rewatch now.

 I didn't like it at all at first, especially River just cowering and whining. I wanted to beat her. I honestly didn't like her or Simon at all until Serenity. Also episode 5 is just awful, but once I got past that I think the show got a lot better, and Serenity is just amazing.

I will definitely post pics of my final costume, but I STILL can't pick a hat (I see good qualities in both and just can't decide) and I'm kind of waiting on the shirt a little to see if it goes on sale. Also I'm being disciplined and not buying either until I get a paycheck.

I've been thinking about doing a Malcolm costume for a while. I had kind of considered doing a steampunk gunslinger but figured that I'm not that hipster, for 1, and by the time I got around to wearing it I'd be over it. So I'm thinking of doing either a Malcolm or a Dr. Horrible outfit.

Ya, OK. Keep me in the loop on that, cool?

Do it!

I was looking at Firefly cosplays last night (I have no life) and realized nobody dresses as Book. Absolutely nobody. It's kind of bothering me now. Although I guess nobody has Fabulous Hair like he does....

 I'm kind of sad he didn't leave it that way... I disliked his hairstyle in Serenity. I know that's a ridiculous detail to get hung up on, but still.

How long do we have to wait til we find out?!

I have pics of the hat but I don't know how to get them off my boyfriend's iPhone and onto the interwebs.

I saw it Saturday night and LOVED it! Not only tense at times but super funny as well. You must see it knowing as little as possible about it. Read no reviews and avoid trailers if you can. Lovingly pays tribute to all things horror while tearing apart the trappings and conventions. Nuff said. Go see it!

:D Thanks! I would be wearing it right now if it wasn't 70 degrees out. I seriously wore it around my boyfriend's apartment all weekend. It's on a teddy bear now because I can't stand to put it away where I can't see it. :P

I think it's pretty screen-accurate, so if anyone else is looking to get one I can tell you where I got it.

Edit: Tonight I ordered a Blue Sun shirt, so in a couple weeks I'll have a pretty sweet outfit. :D

I would say this is a fair evaluation. My opinion, which you SHOULD NOT read before seeing the movie because it will spoil things:

It's a combination of Scream and Hunger Games, with tributes to Evil Dead, Cube, Hellraiser and Thirteen Ghosts. I'm sure there's a lot more references we're missing. Anyway, it's really fascinating to see the influences.

Just started Dollhouse. Is Fran Kranz usually the same person when he acts? I've only ever seen him in Cabin in the Woods so I don't want to assume anything. But he's pretty much the same guy.
