Hi

For those of you that collect Kurt Vonnegut, Easton Press is releasing a new deluxe signed limited edition of Slaughterhouse five. It looks to be a nice edition with a slipcase. here is a link to the page from the recent catalog.

http://v.eastonpresscatalog.com/0033.asp#catalog

I ordered one and am looking forward to adding it to my Vonnegut collection.

Here is a link to my copy of Deadeye Dick that I was able to get signed when he was a guest on The Daily Show

I will add more of my Vonnegut collection in the coming weeks. Anyone else collect him?

I ordered the SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE too. Been collecting Vonnegut for a long time. That's a very nice Vonnegut signature, it must have been a thrill to get that!

I just broke some posts out of the "Other Authors" thread to form the genesis of this new Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. collecting thread. Seems like he deserves one of his own.

My collection is very small, lost some in my move to Indy and SK collecting doesn't help Kurt's cause. He is one of my top 5 authors with Cat's Cradle being my favorite. Was trying to post a pic but no luck.

Nice. I see some King books in the background. You can post a link to Photobucket right in your text and it shows up here, but alas not full size. I use Photobucket and that's what I do (once I figured it out, took me a while).

I don't think you need to put in the and when using Photobucket--just hover your cursor over the image while in Photobucket and pick the last choice in the drop down menu there. That will put those in the link.

That was my first attempt at photobucket. I need to get better because I plan on posting my SK collection this weekend after I get my Night Shift case. Those SK's you see are my reader copies and my pop-up:pirate:
The three hardbacks are 1st/1st.

I just post my pictures on Photobucket(of blood, nyahaha!) and then right click the photo for the properties menu, copy the link and paste it into the photolink here. Works like a charm.

If my plans to adopt Angelina Jolie fall through, I'l let you know.

I loved reading this book: BLUEBEARD;
US proof
1st US hardcover
Putnam S/L edition
Quality Paperback Book Club edition
UK proof
1st UK trade paperback
1st US paperback

For some reason I never got a 1st UK hardcover or paperback, but these are relativley inexpensive so I'll fill those gaps one day. It will probably be harder to track down the paperback in fine shape then the HC.

Very nice!

I knew about the Easton and Franklin editions of S/L's of his work, but I didn't realize that other publishers produced S/L editions as well (Putnam, Delacorte, etc.).

On a side note, I once held a signed U.S. 1st Edition of Breakfast of Champions (in the Rare Book Room at Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon). It was beautiful thing, but the price was way over my budget.

Pay your taxes, man! Then go get yourself that UK 1st paperback of SLAPSTICK. It's absence from your collection is positively glaring. :P

Personally I'd like to get all the Easton S/L's, then the other publisher's S/L's, then maybe the Franklin S/L's, and 1st editions of BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS and SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE. I doubt I'll ever amass all that, but it's fun to imagine.

In the meantime, I live vicariously through your collection.

When Kurt Vonnegut was a guest on The Daily Show, He pulled a piece of paper from his pocket to read from. You can see the interview here

http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-september-13-2005/kurt-vonnegut?xrs=share_copy

Well, I ended up receiving that piece of paper that not only had his printed notes, but also his hand written ones and cross outs.

After some conversations with his print maker, it was turned into a print (sorry for the crap photos)

Easton Press Limited Editions

I came across this eBay article that discusses the Easton Press editions of Vonnegut's work to be useful. There are some book title misspelling and it lacks the two most recent releases, but information like the identifiers for the older signed vs. unsigned books is educational, at least for novices like me.

http://reviews.ebay.com/Easton-Press-Guide-to-Books-by-Kurt-Vonnegut-Jr_W0QQugidZ10000000003837106 (http://reviews.ebay.com/Easton-Press-Guide-to-Books-by-Kurt-Vonnegut-Jr_W0QQugidZ10000000003837106)

See also: http://www.leatherboundtreasure.com/author/vonnegut_kurt.html (http://www.leatherboundtreasure.com/author/vonnegut_kurt.html)

Here is a cleaner, updated list of the Easton Press editions:

01) Player Piano - SIGNED

02) The Sirens of Titan - SIGNED
03) The Sirens of Titan (Masterpieces of Science Fiction) - SIGNED
04) The Sirens of Titan (Masterpieces of Science Fiction) unsigned

05) Mother Night - SIGNED

06) Cat's Cradle - SIGNED

07) God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater - SIGNED

08 ) Welcome to the Monkey House - SIGNED

09) Slaughterhouse Five – SIGNED
10) Slaughterhouse Five (Great Books 20th Century) unsigned
11) Slaughterhouse Five – SIGNED (2011 Slipcase Deluxe Limited Edition of 850)

12) Breakfast of Champions – SIGNED

13) Slapstick - SIGNED

14) Galapagos - SIGNED

15) Bluebeard - SIGNED

16) Timequake - SIGNED FIRST EDITION

17) Bagombo Snuff Box - SIGNED FIRST EDITION

18 ) Fates Worse Than Death - SIGNED FIRST EDITION

19) God Bless You Dr. Kevorkian - SIGNED FIRST EDITION

20) A Man Without A Country - SIGNED

21) Look at The Birdie - SIGNED FIRST EDITION (Limited Edition of 1000)

22) While Mortals Sleep – SIGNED

If anyone has one, I would be interested in seeing a list of the Franklin editions, and the Signed/Limited editions released by other publishers as well.

Dave, you continue to amaze me!

That is an interesting Easton Press list. Some I knew of and some I did not. It's also strange that I have gaps in my collection. For instance I do not have the TIMEQUAKE signed edition but I did get GOD BLESS YOU, DR. KEVORKIAN. Either EP didn't send me fliers on them or they sold out before I knew about them. Must try filling those missing slots in soon!

The following is based on Steve's posts of his impressive Vonnegut collection, and on other sources.

What others should be on this list?

Signed/Limited editions by publishers other than Easton or Franklin

Putnam:

BLUEBEARD, limited edition of 500

HOCUS POCUS, limited edition of 250

FATES WORSE THAN DEATH, limited edition of 200

BAGOMBO SNUFF BOX, issued with gray slipcase, limited edition of 175

TIMEQUAKE, limited edition of 225 copies,

TIMEQUAKE, specially bound and signed for friends in a glassine envelope dust jacket, limited edition of (small quantity)

Delacorte Press:

GALAPAGOS, limited edition of 500

DEADEYE DICK, limited edition of 350

JAILBIRD, limited edition of 500

SLAPSTICK or LONESOME NO MORE!, limited edition of 250

PALM SUNDAY, limited edition of 500

Nouveau Press: (for the Mississippi Civil Liberties Union 1984)

NOTHING IS LOST SAVE HONOR, limited edition of 40
- printed on Japanese Etching & quarterbound in cloth over boards with leather spine and corners

NOTHING IS LOST SAVE HONOR, limited edition of 300
- in cloth and hand marbeled paper over boards

Finally, one that I haven't seen mentioned yet (and that I would love to own):

Origami Express:

MISSING IN ACTION
Signed Book, Limited Edition of 100

This hand-made signed limited edition book is the May 29, 1945 letter written home by PFC Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., concerning the events of the death-defying months after he was taken prisoner of war on December 19, 1944. Vonnegut's searing and wry recounting of that experience laid the foundation for his classic novel Slaughterhouse-Five. An edition of 100 numbered copies, signed and dated in ink by Kurt Vonnegut on May 29, 2004. This edition includes a bound-in, hand-pulled silkscreen of "Kilgore Trout", titled and signed in pencil by Kurt Vonnegut. Published by Origami Express, May 29, 2004 — 49 years to the day he originally wrote the letter. Text was hand-set in Joseph Blumenthal's Emerson type and printed by Larkspur Press, on a hand-fed C&P letterpress on heavy warm white Rising Stonehenge cotton deckled paper. Half-bound and corners in brown Nigerian goatskin, hand-made marble papered boards, slipcased in Record Basalt cloth and spine gold gilding. Book dimensions: 9 x 1/2 x 11 inches. Price: $1,000.

DEADEYE DICK - 350 copies
GALAPAGOS - 500 copies

NOTHING IS LOST SAVE HONOR - Nouveau Press for the Mississippi Civil Liberties Union 1984

And as far as I can tell, TIMEQUAKE was not published by Easton Press, but by Putnam in an edition of 225 copies, in addition to a small number specially bound and signed for friends in a glassine envelope dust jacket.

According to these guys (http://www.leatherboundtreasure.com/author/vonnegut_kurt.html), Easton published TIMEQUAKE in 1997 as part of Easton's "Signed First Editions" series.

Perhaps both Easton and Putnam published signed editions...

Yup, I stand corrected on the TIMEQUAKE editions. Two more to add to my list. Oh yeah, must also add the two Bagombo Snuff Boxes to my list. I remember calling Easton Press when I got the flier for Snuff Box and was told it was already sold out. I was kind of mad, but I'm ok now.

If anyone is looking for a good price on an Easton Press signed edition GALAPAGOS:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160624918123

The title of the auction doesn't mention the book title nor Easton Press, which probably does not serve the seller well.

Disclaimer: I do not know the seller and cannot vouch for him/her.

Only fours hours until the auction ends.

WHO AM I THIS TIME? - Redpath Press, $5.95, book and envelope, ISBN 1-55628-027-0, 1987. Story is from WELCOME TO THE MONKEY HOUSE. Sort of a 'greeting card' or as they say 'A Perfect Present' for someone. Package contains envelope, book and postcard. I have no idea where I got this but I do know I paid $3.95 for it.

FATES WORSE THAN DEATH - Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation, chapbook(?), Spokesman Pamphlet No. 80, 50 pence, ISBN 0 85124 338 X, 6/82, reprint of Vonnegut lecture.

I paid $20 for it, it covers the novels up to HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WANDA JUNE with all known editions and printings, has an introduction by Vance Bourjaily, a picture of Vonnegut, also covers other works; stories, poetry, interviews, introductions, etc., and was published by Gale Research Company, Book Tower, Detroit, 1972.

That's all I know. Hopefully there was no dust jacket.

I think it's a print on demand book. It states published in 2009, but on the last page it says it was printed March 12, 2012. So only the first lot could be considered '1st printings' if you look at it that way. I never heard of it either but just saw it on Amazon while looking through their Vonnegut offerings.

Hello, I also just purchased Cats Cradle from Easton and have a question you may be able to help me with. Seeing that Vonnegut has been gone for some 6 years now, how exactly does EP still release autographed, new editions of his (KV) work? I am assuming they had him sign thousands of blank pages while he was still living and now they sew these pages into the books they manufacture years later. Is that correct? Also, taking into consideration that he really never signed the book as a separate entity, but only a page that was later attached to the book, how much effect does this have on the collectability of the book itself? I also purchased SlaughterHouse-Five from EP back in '98 when it was first released and was under the assumption that Vonnegut signed the book itself. Was I wrong here as well? And is this how signed editions from the other presses are made? Thanks in advance for clearing all of this up for me!

Scoogs
10-20-2013, 06:38 AM
I believe most/all publishers send a stack of limitation pages to the author for signing and later bind them into the finished book.
It's far cheaper to ship one box of signature pages to the author than it is to ship several hundred books or fly them in and put them up in a hotel.

I assume Easton must have had a contract with him that involved him signing a large number of pages at some point, and they are now using those for new editions.
I don't really see either point having a negative effect on the value. The signature is good and the limitation page is numbered, that's what counts.

Dutch
10-20-2013, 08:35 AM
Thanks for the reply Scoogs. I've been collecting signed books for about 15 years now and never thought of the authors signing pages only. Always pictured them sitting at a kitchen table or something with a big stack of books around them. Does make much more sense signing the pages first before they are inserted into the finished product. Just not as personal I guess.
Thanks again!

Hi everyone, I am brand new here and found this site because of this thread!

I am in the market for one of the Easton signed Vonnegut books from the masterpieces of science fiction set.

I really don't know anything about those sets though and thought perhaps someone here could provide some insight!

First off, does anyone know how much they cost originally?

I have one I might buy from a guy, but I noticed the signature is in black ink, and there's one on ebay in blue ink. Is there any way one of the signatures is fake, or did he just use different pens?

Also, do you guys think $170 is a fair price for Sirens of Titan?

Thanks in advance!

Patrick

Thanks for the response! I've been reading Vonnegut for awhile and have absolutely loved pretty much everything I read by him. Definitely my favorite author and I was just thinking the other day about how I'd love a signed book by him so I was checking out ebay. I'm on the fence between Sirens of Titan and Godbless You Mr. Rosewater, but I think Sirens is probably my favorite!

The price doesn't seem to be too bad considering he unfortunately isn't around to sign any more. I'm waiting to hear back from the guy, I'm hoping he's in!

I still haven't heard from the guy yet if he'd be willing to sell his. I'm on a bit of a budget, but I feel like these will probably get harder and harder to find as people who want to collect them grab them up.

Yes, I like it. I just wish I'd have kept records back then.

I am a new guy to this site and to collecting contemporary authors as well. Started off collecting old self help books "1850-1930s". Just recently decided to start adding signed books from all my favorite authors to my collection. Was looking for a original signed Slaughter House Five but realized that was way outside my price range. Really wanted to have something touched by the author though. How do you feel about his artwork? Found one of his birdcage prints for sale and I am really digging it.

Personally I think some of his artwork is very good, and some is quite bad. Very hit or miss.

That being said, in my opinion the birdcage image is iconic Vonnegut and I would love to have gotten one, but they seem quite expensive for what the print is.

If you find one at a good price I say go for it, as long as you post pictures here! :)

It took over 21 years, but I finally found a copy of Easton Press's BAGOMBO SNUFF BOX:

The Folio Society's new edition of CAT'S CRADLE, which I am very pleased with, in a not so great picture.
The box had a hole punched in it but the book was well protected and suffered no damage.
Packaged by Svetlana, no less!

Poor old Kurt, gone, but I sure hope not forgotten.
Anyway, Easton Press must remember him, since they just released another edition of THE SIRENS OF TITAN:

How does the new Easton differ from the old Easton edition? Any value added?

Edit: Oh, now I see it over on the right side of the pic. It looks like thicker paper?

The SIRENS from 1990 is green, and signed by Vonnegut.
The SIRENS from 2022 is black and not signed (of course).

The 2022 volume is thicker, but since I have not removed the shrink-wrap I can not compare the pages.

The artwork on the front and back covers are the same, but the spine layout is different.
