Finally, Shannon's Collection Thread!

I have only been collecting since December 2nd, 2010, so don't expect much as of yet ... But I have collected some pretty cool items recently, and I felt it was time to start my own thread. Also, I think it will be interesting to see how my collection will grow and adapt in the coming years, going from one bookshelf (that is ALREADY full, damnit!) to rooms and rooms in my house, lol. I've decided to go with a "start with the first book and include all versions and then onto the next book" layout. I'm not sure how much I like seeing the crappy paperbacks next to the nice hardcovers. Oh, and speaking of which ... I know the older hardcovers aren't in the best condition. But fuck it, I started my collection by buying 100+ Stephen King books for $75 off of Craigslist. I'll upgrade later. OK, enough talk ... Pics of individual items later.

MY STEPHEN KING BOOKSHELF

My bookshelf, as it looks normally:

The two drawers on the bottom hold my (1) Entertainment Weekly King articles and my (2) Castle Rock Newsletters ... until I figure out what I want to do with them ...

Nice stuff. I also put my books in order of publication. I guess great minds think alike.
Are those COLORADO KIDs part of the traycased lettered copies? Are they all remarqued? I have one coming but I thought they used numbers instead of letters, 33 for each artist. I am still a bit confused on those.

UNIQUE ITEM

Skeleton Crew: Signed Limited Edition Pre-Publication Package:
This item was the first thing I posted about when I joined the forum not too long ago. Before I got into Stephen King collecting, I used to buy and sell things online to make a little extra money. Mostly movies, and I used Craigslist to meet my customers. Anyway, while searching Craigslist randomly one day I came across an ad that was selling "a one of a kind Stephen King item" ... Didn't give too much information, so I emailed the woman, she emailed me back and she told me to come check it out, she ran a local bookstore in town. Cool, sounds good to me ... I get there, meet her, very nice person, and then she shows me this BOX of paper. I know only a little bit more now than I did then about the item, but it is ... what appears to be ... a box of paper.

LOL, it looks like the Skeleton Crew manuscripts in various forms of the publication process. There are the book layouts, there are the long-sheeted pages, there are the stories sent out to different editors and then compiled back together again, there is a mini-box of a one-sided complete manuscript, and it came with a framed dustjacket. Included in the package is the story "'Becka Paulson" story, and since that was only included in the Signed Limited Edition, I assume that's what this was for. Below are some pictures. Again, this box of paper is still somewhat of a mystery. But ...I haven't seen anything like it anywhere else. It doesn't appear to have Stephen King's handwriting on it anywhere, but that's OK. So anyway, I bought it from her and she has continued to fuel my King collecting bug ever since.

Best $100 I have ever spent. :)

I love pictures. You know all the pics and info on the SK Collector website? Yeah, I have a form of that on my computer, for everything out there. But I also have a section devoted to my own stuff. So ... this is a ton of pics from my arrivals on May 17th, 2010. Two packages. One had a Ned Dameron remarqued (Number VI of 21) US First Edition Wastle Lands. The other had 12 audiobooks on cassette tape. Nothing crazy, but this thread is mine, so ha! :)

Thank you all for the compliments. I started off with a clear goal: Collect Stephen King US First Editions. After that, I was going to move on to collecting all the Signed Limiteds out there (numbered, of course). But somewhere between that idea and "Wow, what's a remarque!?" I ended up losing sight of my old goal and gaining a new goal: COLLECT EVERYTHING!

I figure, I'm going to eventually buy everything, so why not just get whatever I want, whenever the price seems right? That's why I'm getting so many audiobooks recently from Ebay. The bundle of 12 cassette tape audiobooks from two posts ago, those came out to a dollar each, not including shipping, and the bundle of 10 CD/cassette tape I just posted, those came out to $3.50 each, not including shipping. I price checked one of the CDs right before I bought the bundle, checked out what people were buying IT on CD for , and the last one went for TWENTY SIX DOLLARS, with 3 different bidders. When I have the opportunity to buy a $26 CD (that I'm going to buy sometime or another ANYWAY) for $3.50, when I see a deal like that, I literally MUST buy it.

Another thing about audiobooks, I don't have a cassette player. I originally bought them just to have them. They look kinda cool sitting on top of my shelf. But ... on the way out the door one day, I grabbed my Blood & Smoke audiobook CD, brought it with me, listened to it in the car. I love it. I'm through the first story "Lunch At The Gotham Cafe", and I'm about halfway through "1408". I don't listen to it in the car with other people or anything, but when I'm buy myself, it's nice to throw on the audiobook and just ... go. :) I definitely see myself actually LISTENING to my CD audiobooks instead of having them just sit on the shelf.

Ur2ndbiggestfan: I liked how they did the autographs in Knowing Darkness also. The only thing I DON'T like about the book (and it might be in there, I haven't went through every page yet) is that there is no index. I was looking specifically for Jill Bauman's artwork, and I had to flip page after page after page until I saw something I recognized from her. Wouldn't it have been easier to have an index with every artist. I know the front page or so has a table of contents of the main main artists, but why not have an index in the back of everyone? Just a thought.

Richard: I didn't rob a bank! lol. You have to understand something. Somehow, in the past six months (and I blame a lot of this on my competitive streak, trying to compete with you guys on this forum! lol), I have become obsessed with collecting Stephen King items. I am ALWAYS broke. I'm military, so I don't have that muchmoney to begin with, lol, but now, I have somehow gotten into the habit of being ok with paying the phone bill late. You know what I mean? Don't know how it happens, but King collecting somehow took over the number one priority spot in my life. I don't wish this on anyone, lol.

Bob: I think I got a great deal on the Skeleton Crew treasure chest also. David priced it at about $700-800, which sounds good to me, lol. I've seen galleys and proofs and manuscripts and stuff before, but all for different books. I haven't seen anything like this --the editors corrections and the book layout and such-- for Skeleton Crew anywhere else. Have you? Like, if I have the only version with these types of annotations and packages and such, then I'd be so happy. But I would be disappointed if, per se, someone else had a treasure chest JUST like the one I have. You know what I mean?

Merlin1958: No, the Flying Monsters remarque was the last one from the set of 21 to be sold off. It went unsold the first time and then went back to Ned to do some additional work. He drew in the background and some other monsters. I spent a little bit more than I wanted to on it, but I'm of the mentality that when I WANT something, I gotta have it! :)

Frik: You're so funny, you want to see pics of my bent, torn, and worn audio cassettes when you have some AMAZING stuff in your collection. I haven't gone through your entire collection thread yet, but I LOVE what I've seen so far. I love the foreign books. I always see some on Ebay and the prices aren't too bad ... until I see how much it costs to ship some books from Israel, lol. Ridiculous. I'm going to wait until I get lucky and Betts has a huge shipment in of foreign books, then I'm gonna buy them all! I want to, like you did, put books of the same title next to each other and show off all the different covers. So cool. :) Do you have a reference website/checklist/book for all the foreign books? Or did you just buy them as you came across something new?

Thanks again guys, HOPEFULLY get my magazines up tonight or tomorrow. Some pretty interesting stuff (to me, probably not to most of you) in there.

Hi Shannon,

No, not really. (first question)
Yes, I have a rather haphazard way of collecting my foreign editions. Either I'm on holidays somewhere (living in the Netherlands it's not hard to cross borders) and I'm going from bookstore to bookstore -who cares about a stupid museum...- or friends take something along from their holidays. Everyone knows by now: every foreign hardcover is welcome - preferably in fine condition, but I'm not too picky.
And yes, there's eBay. Not too many people seem te be interested in non-English (language wise) Kingbooks, so the price usually is right. But, I'm slowing down in my search. I'm up to five bookcases by now and enough is enough...seriously!! I do still buy the new books, of course (UK/US 1st/1sts) plus the new limiteds. But that's about it.

Just a word of advice if I may...

Embarking on any new venture carries with it a sense of excitement and anticipation; that feeling can become addicting. It is imperative that you learn quickly how to control it and not fall victim to it. Collecting should not be about "competing" especially when you are attempting to measure yourself against folks that have been doing this for 25 years. If you make it a competition, you will lose. You will lose pride when you feel that you cannot keep up, you will lose money trying to keep up, and you will lose the point of what collecting is supposed to be about. Especially in a market that carries some fairly expensive items, you could find yourself in a pretty bleak place very rapidly if you do not learn how to keep the "want" in check.

If you cannot pay your mortgage or electric bill you won't care how cool that remarque looks. When you cannot put bread on the table to feed yourself or your family you won't be worrying about how nice the UK covers on those books look. I'm being a little melodramatic to make a point: don't get so caught up in the moment that you become addicted, because that starts you down a road that is difficult to come back from. Collecting like this should be done for the love of it using discretionary income, not a contest whereby you are making decisions between a book and paying a phone bill late. No one built a world class collection in 6 months; it takes time, and isn't part of the joy of this hobby the hunt? The thrill of tracking something down that you've been wanting for years?

You're doing something you love, which is fantastic! Just keep your head about you and don't let what you love become something that consumes you.

Best,

Ric

Ric, thanks for the words of wisdom, I appreciate it. I am far from living on the street (I hope), and I understand it's not a competition, what I meant was ... Hmmm ... Oh, I know the perfect way to explain it. I've been talking with an artist, attempting to buy some original art from a Stephen King book. The response I got back was something like this (edited so no one with more money swoops in and takes my prize! lol):

"Shannon,
I've created art for the following Stephen King books:
1. EXAMPLE 1.
I did 3 pieces of art and have sold 2 of them.

2. The cover of EXAMPLE 2 for the story, 'BLAH BLAH.' the MONTH AND YEAR issue. The art has been sold.

3. 4 pieces of art for EXAMPLE 3. 3 have been sold."

I hear that and I think, WOW, they only have TWO PIECES LEFT. Now, whether I like and/or want and/or can afford one of those pieces at this time is a different story, but my point is ... my mentality is I must BUY IT NOW or else it will be a) gone forever or b) not available at the low price I currently find things at.

So, in essence, I'm kind of competiting with myself and against the head start that everyone else has gotten. lol that reminds me of part of an email I sent David recently:

"I see you lowered some prices recently. It's a never ending cycle! I tell myself 'OK, I'm gonna take a break for a month or two, maybe pay off my car' and then you go and put some great priced stuff on your website! I'm gonna hold off for as long as I can. Maybe I'll last the month or two, but I doubt it. :)"

I think I would like to pay off my car ... Three months of Stephen King Collecting funds and it should be beyond paid off, and then I can go back to collecting ... But see, what if I find a great deal in the meantime? Ugh, it would be so difficult to pass on it. OK ... save money, save money, pay off car. That's my new Stephen King goal ... LOL. I intend on tracking my progress through my collection thread also. I have a little bit of stuff I reserved over the next month and a half, so some stuff will still be bought, but no more new stuff ... OH GOD! ... starting ... now.

Thats all very cool stuff!!!!!

In that pic of your shelves are those First/First's of "Carrie", "Salem's Lot" and "Night Shift"?

If so I'd LOVE to see detailed pics of those!!!!!!!!

Also, you might want to "parse" out the pics some for easier reference. Just a thought.

Shannon

No first of Carrie or Night Shift, just future printings. And my 'Salem's Lot is a future printing book with a fairly decent looking First Edition Second State dustjacket. I suppose I can pick up a fine first edition book without a dustjacket for a not-so-expensive amount, but I'm too busy buying other stuff to even look into it, lol.

Does "parse" mean space out? Hmmm, dictionary.com, you are my friend ... Well, that didn't help much. To analyze, to describe ... Ummm, when I started my thread I posted stuff in sections, and now-a-days I just post pics of stuff when I receive them. Is there a better way? :)

Shannon

lol, I've seen some variant hardcover comic collections around, but I found these 13 hardcover collections in an Ebay auction, mint condition, thoroughly taken care of, with the plastic cover protector things and everything, and I can't remember if it was a BIN price or an auction I won, but they came out to $5.77 each when all was said and done. I can't pass on something like that, especially when I've only had the first three Dark Tower ones (which I remember paying $25 for in the stores!) in my collection to begin with. AND, the icing on the cake, I'm actually going to READ these! I'm pretty excited, lol, most of the stuff I buy sits on the shelf, looks pretty, and it's a "check" off my list. But these, I'm actually going to read. Pretty excited. :)

But anyway, as far as comics go, I will say my collection is complete when I own the individual comics, all the variants, the hardcover collections, and all the variants of those. Oh, and the new mega-collections that are coming out soon. :)

As to the secong part of your post: Well, if you limit each post to a few pics of say, 2 books at a time. It's a little easier to view and comment on. That's not necessarily a "better way" just maybe easier for the viewers I suppose. It's a matter of preference and opinion I would guess.

As for the first part, again opinion & preference, but I would take a chunk of those "random" purchases and apply it to getting those "key" first's. Of course, that's just MHO.

In anycase, you've got some absolutely wonderful items in your collections!!!!!!!

So, I'm not buying so much "random" stuff as much as I am "checking lots of stuff off my list". The more and more contacts I'm making when I buy things open up more and more doors to the point where I am now getting things cheaper and finding better deals than I have when I first started collecting. Instead of collecting one sub-collection at a time (example, US First Editions), I'm collecting everything! :)

As for the pictures, I post pictures when I receive my items. Not too worried about comments. I enjoy them and look forward to them, but I collect for me. Speaking of collecting, I haven't received anything in the mail in a few days, and I'm already going crazy! I have my 150+ Entertainment Magazines on the way, but apparently the post office sent them back to the sender on accident (yeah right, lol), and then other than that I have three more items and then after that I am going to be putting away money for a big King item at the same time as paying my car off. I just have to keep telling myself NO MORE EBAY NO MORE EBAY! Every time I get on there to check prices or whatever, I always see something I want. So difficult!

LOL Hey, I meant no disrespect at all. You collect according to your own rules I always say. Same with the pics, your thread, your rules, is my Opinion. I was just trying to help. Of course, you're doing great so who cares what I think????? No one!!!!! LOL

Merl? That's cool. I've been called worse!!!!!!

BTW, if you want "Everything"!!!!! Be sure to be online 5/31/11!!!!!! Something "Cool is coming"!!!!!!

LOL Great Collection!!!!!

I know "Something is Coming! 5/31/2011" RF's clues have been driving me insane! Do you know what it is? Sneaky sneaky!

I didn't sense any disrespect or anything like that at all from your posts. I appreciate your thoughts and opinions, you're my friend! And you can't say I have a "great collection" I have an "ok collection", maybe a "really good beginning collection" but looking through your collection makes me jealous! I want that Mist snow globe!

Anyway, my brain is melting. I'm switching the format of my Stephen King Excel spreadsheet from all on one sheet to lots of sheets ... Trying to split up my collection into US First Editions ... Signed Limiteds ... but where I'm going crazy is with the things that go into two categories ... Like ... what about a Foreign Signed Limited? Or ... where the hell do the Secretary Of Dreams go? And ... should Nightmares In The Sky be considered an official Stephen King book? Going crazy, going crazy. Need to take the night off from Stephen Kinging.

I'm still wondering what exactly your definition of 'everything' is. Does that also include all the variations (trade, numbered, lettered hardcovers) paperback editions and later printings for every title, proofs/ARCs, pre-Carrie publications, comics and their variations, audiobook variations (tapes, CDs), promo items, press kits, movies, movie kits and other stuff I forgot? And all of these in US and UK versions or also other languages? Books relating to King's work and all their variations?

As for creating a comprehensive overview in Excel, it's much easier to just follow Justin Brooks' book as a guideline (so you can number the cells in your spreadsheet according to his outline, i.e., A2 - Carrie and then use his numbering for the various editions. Same goes for magazine fiction appearances, non-fiction appearances etc.). Stuff like proofs, portfolios, audiobooks... you can list them under the appropriate title, too. Every King item is linked to a 'title', so this is the most parsimonious way.

Bio,

Everything means everything. Except books/articles/essays ABOUT King or his work, I can do without those. But yeah, I would love to have a bookshelf full of Carries from around the world, hardcover, paperbacks, all different covers. When I look at some of you people's collections and someone has ten versions of a book, I love it. As for right now, I have a few core groups I would like to complete/start:

US First Editions
All Signed Limited (numbered) Editions that King signed officially
Castle Rock Newsletters
Entertainment Weekly Magazines
Stephen King Library (red fake leather books)

After those, my next groups would probably look something like this:
UK First Editions
Proofs
Every magazine/anthology that has a first appearance of one of his fiction/non-fiction works
Audiobooks/movies

And so on and so on. I like the Justin Brooks book a lot. And I do use it as a sort of checklist, also pulling the info from the book out and putting it into my shreadsheet. That's not a bad idea about the A27, B121 code though ... Right now I just have mine split up according to category. Work work work! Ugh, real work, gotta go, adios.

I think it's wise that you're focusing on a few subgroups of 'everything'. It is possible to get complete sets of all of these:

US First Editions
All Signed Limited (numbered) Editions that King signed officially
Castle Rock Newsletters
Entertainment Weekly Magazines
Stephen King Library (red fake leather books)

UK 1sts can be done but will be harder. Completing a set of proofs and magazine appearances... extremely unlikely. But it will surely keep you busy for a long time to come!! Good luck, it's nice to see such enthusiasm!

Unless you have a seven figure income, attempting to collect "everything" is a fools errand. Just the S/L collection alone will run you around $50k at today's market value, and that's only numbered not lettered; never mind when you start going after things where only 1 or 2 exist. That's why I mentioned in my collection thread that I'm very selective. Attempting to collect "everything" is an impossibility, so to me, it's foolish to try. I'd rather concentrate on what I like and what is also -- to an extent -- achievable.

I don't know guys, I don't really think it would be that difficult to collect everything in the next 60+ years or so. As far as $50,000 S/Ls, that's less than 50 months of Stephen King spending for me, at my current rate. I somehow always end up spending about $1,250 a month and then some on Stephen King books. Hence, my always brokeness, lol. 50 months is a little over four years. Four years to collect all the S/Ls? I'm OK with that.

But you're right, what happens when I find everything and all I'm left with are the things that only 1 or 2 exist? Well, then I go and hide in Bob's basement, of course. :)

At that point, we'll see ... Hey, by the way, can you guys list off some Stephen King items that have "disappeared"? I asked this question months and months ago and the response I got was that everything pretty much comes around every now and then. But besides the items that are in the Fogler (Foger?) Library and in King's home, what else is out there that is really scarce? Contraband 1 and 2 seem to be a little scarce, but they only fetched 250-350 on Ebay recently, that's not too much I think.

Hey bio, did you buy your fold out prints yet? Mine have been sitting here on my dresser since I got them and I don't really know what to do with them. PM me.

I'm going to be a PITA again but personally, I would include the little SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION hardcover among the first editions as well (as far as I know this was not a library binding per se, it's just that most of them ended up in libraries). I would also include SILVER BULLET, but I can see why you wouldn't. And there are several TOMMYKNOCKERS dust jacket variants.

At that point, we'll see ... Hey, by the way, can you guys list off some Stephen King items that have "disappeared"? Some very hard to get items: the pre-CARRIE publications from the sixties (with the exception of the Startling Mystery Magazines and the 1968 TV Guide), Onan and Marshroots from the early seventies. The Doubleday proofs of 'SALEM'S LOT, THE SHINING, NIGHT SHIFT and THE STAND. Some of the seventies magazine appearances like Maine Magazine (1977) with 'One For The Road'. Many proofs are very scarce, not only the early ones but also stuff like CELL.

I look at Shawshank Redemption the same way I look at the other standalone novellas ... The Breathing Method, Apt Pupil, The Body (Fall From Innocence), The Mist. They first came out elsewhere, therefore, not first editions. Same thing with Silver Bullet. Just like ... I wouldn't include the Gift Edition of the new It book ... It was previously published in/as a official SK book.

There are two Tommyknocker variants? How did I miss that?

Awesome, thank you for your list. I have since put IF THESE EVER APPEAR BUY NO MATTER WHAT THE COST! on the rows of these items in my spreadsheet lol

Aha! I did check the catalog but I didn't format my spreadsheet correctly. Before I had included the dustcover states as seperate entires, I had compiled all the info for all states, editions, S/Ls ... into one row per book. That was when I first started out. And I guess I missed the Tommyknockers seperation. Oh well, corrected now. I like the way that list above (US First Editions) came out. And it would be semi-easy to update also ... just change the color. Not bad, not bad. Next up, probably this weekend (don't hold your breath) will be a list like that of my S/Ls ... I only have a handful at the moment, but again, it will be easy to update over time.

Are you accounting for the Gerald's Game ABA edition too? :)

Shannon
06-02-2011, 05:06 PM
I would consider the ABA Edition to be a Proof/ARC. Proofs aren't high on my priority list. The only reason I own two so far (both Secretary Of Dreams) is because Tom had some amazing remarques in them that I simply must have owned. :)

Ric
06-02-2011, 06:18 PM
It's not a proof at all, it's a fully bound edition with the same block but the addition of the handwritten facsimile page. If you're counting dust jacket variations then I would think an actual change in the book itself would merit a separate entry as well. :P

No. While it does blend sometimes, generally, as I understand it, Proofs are for Publishers and ARC's are for "Reviewers", etc. Jhanic would be the one to ask, but I think he stated something similar in a recent post. As such, Proofs are generally not bound with "End-Boards" while ARC's are. Please, anyone with more experience feel free to clarify further!!!!

The GERALD'S GAME ABA edition was distributed in limited quantities at a specific occasion before the official date of publication of the trade edition. It was not for sale to the general public. That does not make it an ARC or proof per se, but it's definitely a 'pre-publication state'.

A pre-publication state is usually designated as a 'proof' or 'uncorrected proof' or 'special reader's edition' or 'advance reader's copy' or any of many other names by a statement on the book itself. But that doesn't always tell you what it was used for by the publisher. Some will send out fancy editions with full cover art for reviewing/promotional purposes while others seem to send out the plain proofs that many people usually associate with in-house use only (the Scribner proofs of the past decade are an example). Another category are the promotional booklets: stapled paper excerpts like the H&S CELL and UNDER THE DOME but also the slightly more elaborate ones like the BLACK HOUSE and STAND UNCUT 'partial proofs'. Where do these fit in?

I think the common distinction of plain, primitive proofs vs. more elaborate ARCs is useful enough for discussion purposes but in the end they are all 'pre-publication states' and they should be treated as such when talking about 'first editions', which I think are commonly accepted to be first trade editions (i.e., the first state of a book for sale to the general public).

There was a promotional booklet just like the CELL one. I purchased one a couple of months before the book was released and I sold it to Barry. I think only two or three ever popped up on our collective 'collectors radar'.

Thanks dive. My collection, unfortunately, has no real direction at the moment. Just a disease that continues eats to eat up time, money, and space! But it's my disease and I love it. :)

To our little proof discussion: Thanks for the clarification on the terms. It's always been my opinion that a lot of proofs/ARCs just aren't that attractive sitting next to each other on the shelves compared to other editions of the book. I think that's why I'm staying away from them for now. I asked this type of question a few months ago regarding the differences between the original short stories in magazines and the short stories in the collection books, but I was now wondering about proofs/ARCs, are there any out there that have major differences between that version and the completed story?

jhanic
06-03-2011, 04:06 PM
Under most circumstances, the proof/ARC has the identical text that is issued in the trade edition. There are a few exceptions, though, where it is actually a "manuscript proof" such as were issued for Desperation, The Regulators and a couple others. These often have hand-written "corrections' in them.

Proofs don't need to be visually attractive on the shelf in my opinion (neither are magazines). The attraction lies in the fact that they are little pieces of publishing history that many people never get to see (again, my opinion).

Thankfully you are not collecting the Library of Congress. :)

Nor the more generallly desired "First Editions".

Just an salient observation. 433 items (by my math) in your collection and you don't have any of the "Doubleday" books, many folks seek. You just may want to focus a bit. Just MHO

Shannon

lol, the Library of Congress has a King section, right? lol

For right now, I buy things at great prices. Or, if not great, then definitely at the low end of the spectrum.

I paid $150 for an original piece of artwork used for a Stephen King anthology cover. On the way.

I paid $350 each for two Dark Tower S/Ls. On the way.

The Entertainment Weekly magazines above, in mint condition, I paid less than a dollar each for.

Another deal in the works: Gauntlet 2 S/L, The Ideal, Genuine Man S/L, Sin Of The Father S/L, Stephen King Companion Deluxe S/L, Feast Of Fear Limited, Bare Bones Limited for $600 total.

The Doubleday books will always be there, hypothetically, lol, and I would much rather pay $600 two years from now for one than $650 for one today. Because with that $50 I saved, I can buy ... drumroll please ...

MORE STEPHEN KING BOOKS! :)

That's all fine and good, except when Sai King goes to "The Clearing" they ain't gonna go for $50 more or less either way. Now is the time, but to each his own I suppose.

When Ron Wood finally goes, all my stuff will double, nay triple in value!!!!!

Randall Flagg

Congratulations. I thought you got it for a very good price.

Shannon
06-07-2011, 05:28 PM
Thanks guys. It came framed. Nothing fancy. Glass, border. Even after all my talks with the seller, artist, and editor trying to get it authenticated (which I finally got the artist to say "You're right, that is my original piece"), I still wanted to make 100% sure. So, when I got it, I took it out of the frame and felt the paint very lightly, and, while not affecting the painting, I got some paint on my finger. So ... I am convinced, lol.

Yes, great price. If it weren't for the Buy It Now price that I jumped on (thank you again Ben Staad, I owe you one!), I have a feeling this would have went for a LOT more than it did. I like getting good deals. :)

Update to the Gunslinger situation:

The seller has graciously told me that a refund is fine. I will be mailing it back to him Monday and getting my money back. As I had said earlier, it was kind of my fault for not asking for a spine picture (after asking for and receiving front and rear pictures, a price on the dustjacket picture and a copyright page picture) and kind of his fault for not knowing in the first place that the lettering on the spine should have been yellow and not white. So, when I brought up the situation with him, I let him know that I'm not upset in the least bit and that anything he choose to do would be 100% OK with me. And it would have been. But, now I'm doing a happy dance because I get a refund. :)

Rearranged my Stephen King shelves, I think it looks a lot better this way (except for the paperbacks, but fuck em, lol). I will be switching my Stephen King bookcase and my Other Authors bookcase around either tomorrow (doubtful) or next weekend. The other bookcase is bigger. Also, by next weekend I should be receiving 9 more books, mostly signed limiteds. Yay! :)

Just to remind you guys of my first arrangement:

Shannon, you are one crazy collector and a picture taking fiend! I say this all with the greatest respect. You truly are an obsessed collector, and I admire that, being one myself. Love your shelves, you must spend a lot of time looking at them, I know I would. Keep up the good work!
Oh yeah, that Italian COLORADO KID is the bees knees (or whatever the current popular expression is for one helluva great item).

Thanks guys. I'm REALLY excited about some things that are headed my way. First editions, signed limiteds, original artwork, old magazines with first appearances in them, gift editions, artist editions, obscure odds and ends, etc ...

I have eleven items on their way to me right now.

I'm making payments on two other items. One will be done next month, another will be done in five months, lol

And I'm talking to a collector to buy sixty-eight items from him.

Excited, excited! And then, after all this ... I'd like to think I'd pay off my car. But that's not gonna happen. I can already see into the future ... What, someone has Six Stories S/L for $600!? What, an Erin Wells It drawing is only at $400!? Ooooh, TMSG for under $150,000!?

I'm sure you'll keep them off the shelves if you do it. The collection is nice but it will look much nicer w/o the paperbacks scattered throughout.

Stock, the bookseller had a copy of Rage but it had cover creases and such, so I passed. A little wear and tear is fine with me, but something like a hard crease on the cover I just can't look past. It's the COVER, you know, lol

Bio, they're yet another sub-section of King collecting. I wasn't going to purchase the UK first of The Long Walk, because that opens yet ANOTHER door of King collecting that I didn't want opened yet, but I liked the price she gave me for all three. I find that the firsts for The Long Walk and The Running Man sell for as little as $35 bucks each online, what does a UK first of The Long Walk sell for? I would assume more because most of the time UK printings are scarcer, but I haven't found any info on that particular title ...

Garrell, I collect everything, but with movies, they must be sealed/new. Not hunting them down too much, they'll pop up when they're ready. :)

Thanks Cook. :)

WelcomeToLud, lol, very excited about the books on the way. And also, my second shelf configuration had the non first edition paperbacks on the bottom and out of the way, I do think it looks better, but at the same time, I like the way it looks when you have ten of the same title next to each other in different editions. With your regular paperbacks seperate, where do you include the larger Plume DT books, the first edition BOMC Storm Of The Century, Colorado Kid, the Bachman first edition paperbacks? Because if you leave them mixed in with the hardcover first editions, it would still give you that scattered look. But if you include the with the regular paperbacks, they suddenly become unimportant.

I'm not sure about the UK Long Walk, I have no idea what I paid for my copy (I don't keep records). I don't think the UK Bachman paperbacks are more expensive than the US ones. They may even be cheaper on average. The hardest one to find is Roadwork, I think.

I love it. I tried to show some up close detail of the artwork, because it really IS so much better in person ... but I don't think my camera skills paid off. There is so much detail, it ridiculous. Oh well. VERY happy with this purchase. Will figure out some kind of framejob and post pictures when it is done.

Since it is a B&W drawing, i would stick to Black, white and or gray for the matting and framing.

Mr. Staad, thank you. Proofs just don't do it for me, but placed a lazy small bid on eBay on it, expecting to be easily overbid and it didn't happen. So ... yay? lol

Crowman, thanks for the advice. I will do just that. There is another Erin Wells It art out there that I think will mirror/complement this one perfectly, I'm waiting to see if I can snag that one also and then I will frame them together. :)

Shannon, I'm so glad that you are pleased with the drawing! Thanks for your purchase. It looks like there might be a crease in the mat in the top photo--or is it a trick of the light? Please let me know if I should make modifications to the way I've been packaging these, I hope the drawing itself is undamaged. Thanks again! -E.

Thanks everyone. :) I have one more original artwork on the horizon ... maybe two months from now? It was the first piece I originally went after, and it's going to be my most expensive so far ... but ... it's an OK piece ... just knowing now, since I bought all my artwork for $150, $550, and $750 each, going almost double the highest price for a single piece of OOOOKKKKK art is kinda bothering me. Oh well ... That's just how it goes. but yeah! All I have left are about 75 items from another collector's collection ... really excited about these. Starting with the magazines, should be getting them next week. Yay!

Buying Art is a tricky business. I know just enough to be dangerous, but I got somewhat of an education buying my Ron Wood and Roger Dean pieces, as well as the Disney Cel's.

A word of caution, if the money's dear be very careful. Also, do what I did, buy what you enjoy looking at and not for an investment. My wife hates the Ron Wood "Mick Jagger" piece in my sig, but as it turns out that is the one that I paid the least for and has gained the highest in "Investment" value. I love looking at it cause man, THAT's Mick!!!!!! LOL

Great Acquisitions and nothing but the best of luck to ya!!!!

Merlin, I totally understand what you're saying, but I don't really buy anything for the investment value. I would like an original Stephen King related art piece from every Stephen King artist. Not sure if I'll include remarques or not just yet ...

St. Patrick, thanks for the compliment and for taking the time. Sorry for the abundance of pictures when it comes to crappy things like audiobooks, lol I like pictures. More to come in the next month, and then Shannon is going dark for a little while. Well, not dark completely, but dark from buying things. I really need to pay off my car, lol.

You're a hard guy to figure, Shannon. Seems like one minute you want everything, then you're selling off cool stuff for financial reasons, IDK. Then again, I guess I'm more the "OCD" collecting type so what do I know. However, if you truly want to "collect everything (King)", it's a good idea to focus somewhat and "plod" along for at least a little while. From what I have seen of your collection, focusing on the Magazines may be a good place to start. First the Mags, then the US firsts, etc., etc. Of course, that's my OCD peeking out again, but OCD or not you gotta get a handle at one time or another.

Regardless of my feeble opinions, amazing stuff!!!!!

Hello friend. I already had an agreement with a former SK collector before I became broke. I discovered him, he took the time to list EVERYTHING he had for me, including conditions and pictures, we worked out a price for everything, and then we started the transactions. I found him on Craigslist, so I didn't want to buy everything from him immediately because, well, hey, he could be a faker and I could lose a lot of money, so we have been doing installments. The magazines were the first installment, next is First Editions and Odds and Ends, after that is the most expensive group, maybe about five or six Gift and Artist Editions.

So anyway, we did all this work already, and I'm not the type of person to cancel something unless I can ABSOLUTELY help it. That's just not me.

But anyway, this recent bit of selling I have done has kept me more than afloat ... My bills are all up to date, and I actually went out and partied last night at a few clubs ... So I'm good. :)

But yes, after buying the last of the stuff from my collector friend, and after my last payment for an original artpiece is paid, I will not be buying anything else until I pay off my car.

Thanks Jerome. I try to post pictures of everything Stephen King-related inside a particular magazine/anthology because I know from experience that looking through the Justin Brooks biblio is great, but seeing actual pictures is a little bit better. :)

I have a lot of pages. I think on my first year anniversary (December) I am going to make a new thread, starting with group pictures of everything I own (one picture for all my US first editions, one picture for my signed limiteds, my artwork, my proofs, my audiobooks, etc.) and then make weekly pictures of my new additions, like above. This whole individual picture thing is exhausting, lol.

Thanks guys, I had a fun week.

I found a seller on Craigslist here locally that wanted to sell his collection off, went over to his place with cash in hand, didn't even know what he had ... And he had a lot of stuff, but most of it wasn't in great condition. Perfect example, the "upstairs books" he showed me were all in one vertical pile ... about five feet of hardcover books on top of each other ... Ouch, right? I stayed away from most of those ... and other than those the only things I didn't buy were 1) A 'Salems Lot Illustrated first (he wanted $25, which is a little more than I wanted to pay for it), and 2) a Prime Evil S/L (which he wanted for $500, which I didn't have available to spend at the moment).

As I was buying things he kept throwing in extras ... First the newspaper clippings, then the three magazines, then the Castle Schlock newsletters (which I would have gladly paid money for!). Very interesting that I came across the first appearance of "'Ever Et Raw Meat?' ..." ... I mean, it's in a newspaper from years and years ago ... I don't think they would be readily or easily found in too many places ...

I come home to find out I already had Skeleton Crew, The Dark Half, Song Of Susannah, Drawing Of The Three (which I knew I had, but the guy was selling his three for a good price, lol, I couldn't pass that up) ... Oh well, it was worth it. And I'll be putting up most of my extras for sale today I think. Same thing with the Castle Rock newsletters, I had Volumes 1-4, he had Volumes 1-5 for a great price, so I scooped them up.

The My Pretty Pony is actually REALLY ugly. I hate it. It's probably the least favorite thing I've ever bought in my life. :( It's a short story spread out in a superhuge, obnoxious book, with big ugly dotted photographs/artwork of horses. Ugly ugly ugly. Yuck! I said that to my girlfriend last night and she goes ... "Well, what did you buy it for, then?" lol

Shannon
11-06-2011, 04:52 PM
Thanks, I have quite a few items in boxes ... The Castle Rock newsletters, the Entertainment Weekly magazine, other magazines, the Skeleton Crew treasure chest ... I'd like to get some kind of wooden custom-made boxes/filing cabinet for them, with artwork/inscriptions on it. I have many, many ideas for where my collection is going ... Here's one ...

Lightly stained glass display cases, with a stained-glass artwork montage of some great SK scenes ...

Brice
11-06-2011, 05:21 PM
That sounds like it could be pretty cool.

I used to use boxes for my magazines and assorted flat paper items that i really have nowhere to display. Now i've got a four drawer file cabinet just for king stuff. My hope is to fill it in the next year and need another. Anyhow, i mentioned it cause with all the mags and stuff like that you're getting eventually you'll definitely be needing a solution other than boxes.

The collection is looking great. :)

Olive, I have eight proofs/advance copies, including the UK 11/22/63 sampler. Just little ones I've picked up along the way for decent prices. I don't think proofs will be the focus of my collecting aim until many years from now. Some of them are truly expensive!

I think once I'll start collecting magazines with unpublished stories or the ones that have been changed. Cavalier, Playboy etc. Problem is, that's a lot more expensive to send to Canada. Craigslist isn't popular and I'm thinking if my collection branches out in that direction, it'll be quite costly...

How do you find out which issues have King's stories if it doesn't say on the cover? Some places here have old skinmags and I might check them out on an off-chance there might be some King goodies there. Don't want to be spending too much time in that section, might look sleazy, know what I mean?

How do you find out which issues have King's stories if it doesn't say on the cover? Some places here have old skinmags and I might check them out on an off-chance there might be some King goodies there. Don't want to be spending too much time in that section, might look sleazy, know what I mean?

Maybe it's just me but I can't think of any downside to having to look through old skin magazines.

If you want to branch out into magazines and journals, you can't live without Justin Brooks' Bibliography. Although I do think there's a post somewhere which lists all of King's short fiction 1st appearances.

*edit: John just created a Men's Magazines post.

The only Swedish I know I learned from the Muppet Show's chef.

Also, that's a very impressive collection, it takes about 5 minutes to download all the pics on my slo-poke PC! Really like that display case, and all the King related magazines etc. I don't collect them so it's nice to see all the pictures like that. Must have taken you at least ten minutes to lay all those items out and take the pictures.

Shannon
12-03-2011, 03:53 PM
Thanks! It took quite a long time to set everything out. Hell, the odds and ends and movie press kits are still in my living room in their nice little picture taking spots, lol. Amber helped with the magazines, I did everything else. I still think she got the raw end of the deal, lol.
