Does anybody remember the guy who posed as Stephen King on TDT.net? I know that story's come up before...it was funny at the time.
I vaguely recall that it happened, but the details escape me. I'd love to know more.

I also remember Uncle Fardo. He was the funniest person on the site, and I never could figure out who he/she was. Perhaps even more than one person pulled it off.

Maybe this will jog somebody else's memory for better, more specific details.

Basically, there was a guy whose name escapes me but he posted pretty cogent comments, and had a lot of good things to say about writing and books - he DID know what he was talking about the vast majority of the time.

his style was similar to King's - not in words, specifically, but style. It sounded a lot like King.

Now - the part I don't remember is how it went from an intelligent poster with a King style to people thinking he might BE King. I feel like he donated money to a few things, and I'm pretty sure he helped somebody with a signed book, maybe? He WAS a good guy...even as I type this, I feel like I remember that he dropped hints that he had a hookup in King's office...and slowly over time, implied he knew Marsha better than most (but my memory is iffy). And again, I feel like he proved some sort of connection with a signed book - so it was POSSIBLE. It wasn't just some clown on a message board running his mouth.

There was a point where people started asking him outright, and he did not confirm or deny, but he was cagily evasive - but obviously there were suspicions about his motives. Of the people who cared, most didn't really believe he was - but WANTED to believe, and then some of course flat-out DID believe. Because he HAD helped people out in a few times - so it wasn't like he wasn't backing it up.

The actual emails were posted, but finally Tyler (I think?) emailed him a catfish email where he played along with it and was basically "If you are King, I'll never tell anybody, but this is incredible you're on the site, blah blah..." without actually believing it was him. And then the guy actually said "yes, I am King, but don't tell anybody." I wish I'd thought to copy it, because it was VERY pretentious - he was full-on acting at that point. I can't remember any lines from it, but it was written in the very informal style you'd expect from King - the guy was a great mimic.

But since the whole thing was a trap, obviously Tyler told everybody and banned him from the site - I can't remember the actual clinching evidence, but it's not a case where "wait, maybe it was King and you banned him by mistake!" They did something to confirm it wasn't him - I think Tyler might have contacted Marsha to ask, and King himself said it wasn't...in fact, again, as I type, that's the memory that comes to mind. That Marsha was like "King didn't even know the site existed until you just told me." Or something equally soulcrushing at the time.

But I don't remember the guy's username or anything...and I think once banned, that was just the end. He didn't plead his case or anything.There were people on his side - he HAD helped people, so that was baffling.

And his posts were very good, and his observatons I recall being pretty well-considered..he wasn't a blowhard - I remember early on I had suspicious that it COULD be King, even though I knew it wasn't - but I think it was just a normal fan who was aping King's writing style and then he wanted to have fun with neither confirming or denying, and then it just out of hand. I felt bad, because unless I'm totally misremembring, the reason people ended up trusting him was because he was helping people out - it wasn't like people were giving him money, it was the other way around. Very strange event.

I was just an audience member, though, not any kind of participant. It was good gossip for a little while, but it faded quickly - of course the people who were fooled were disappointed and didn't want to talk about it again, and even the people who never believed were still sad that a good member was a fraud AND I'm pretty sure it didn't help that the one response from the actual, real SK was fairly dismissive of the site itself. I have a memory that Marsha's response was pretty cold - not unfriendly, just utterly dismissive.

Haha...I couldn't be more on Tippy's side on this.

I HATED this - the constant "thankee Sai..." or "Sai King" was the worst of it, but I know there were other examples/quotes people just loved to use. So lame! Luckily, it seems to have died out here. The harping about #19 also got old for me.

But even though I never said anything about it, I was on Rick's side in a big way.

Brice comes around every few weeks, and obviously John Hanic is in a care facility (seemingly in worse health than JReitlan47). Hopefully both of them can confirm that everything has been resolved to their satisfaction.

To this day I still don't know the whole story of what happened with Kali (Michaela) but I am sure Dolan (Kenny) was somehow involved and there was another guy but I can't remember his name, Johnny maybe? Never did find out. I just remember something about Michaela disappearing after Palavercon. Robert saying that no project Michaela was involved in would be entertained by DMG and that Michaela no longer worked there. The next thing was the divorce and tdt.net shutting down.

I miss Kali aka. Michaela... she was always very nice to me, plus a majority of my Dark Tower proofs came from her.

Just to refresh people:











Stay tuned for a "blast from the past" that I don't believe has been told in the previous 1,000+ posts. It might even be lewd and lascivious.
Strictly from fuzzy memory, and apologies if something is repeated.

In 2005 (believed to be May), Michaela Weiner bought dt.net from the previous owner Tyler.
Internet Archive of announcement. (http://web.archive.org/web/20050701012152/http://thedarktower.net/)
Michaela's husband, Robert Weiner financed Michaela's pet project, and was also using Josh (Co-Owner with Michaela) to redesign the DMG website. Josh received half ownership based upon future deliver of a functional website for DMG books.
Previous owner Tyler had made a desperate please for money from members to keep the site running and to help pay the "new personal PC, hosting and server" costs associated with maintaining the site. If you donated money, you became a special "Ka-Tet" member with a 19 somewhere in your avatar.
Tyler ended up spending the money on a car for himself. Staff and members felt betrayed and were outraged. Tyler justified the auto purchase by claiming that if he didn't have a functional vehicle the site would perish as he couldn't pay the costs necessary to run it (the money members raised in the first place). This was the beginning of the end for Tyler's ownership.

Initially the change of ownership was fantastic and things were peachy.

Collector's gathered and conversed primarily in the Collector part of the forum.

At some point, management made the decision that Collector's not only needed to participate in other areas of the site, but they wanted to require that Collector's contribute to the entire site. Someone else may clarify, but there was a specific plan to do so.

Enter new member "Dolan". Dolan was an abrasive, brash, openly gay, 20ish Collector from New York. Essentially crashing in much like Shannon did, but lacking all of the politeness that Shannon exhibited.

Dolan's avatar was a facial pic of himself. No big deal, except somehow tippy4 (still had the turtle avatar) and Dolan got into it. I remember tippy4 telling Dolan that (paraphrasing) "what kind of a freak uses an actual picture of his ugly face for his avatar?"
A terrible brouhaha ensued. Kenny (Dolan) was want to call anyone he disagreed with a "fucker, asshole, etc." openly in posts. He was very profane and insulting. Thus the site was a must visit. Everyone was literally sitting by hitting refresh every two minutes for the new combative post to appear. Great great fun.

In their infinite wisdom, Management and staff decided that the best way to corral Dolan was to "Promote him". They correctly figured that once in charge, Dolan would become a bossy, rule enforcing Moderator Nazi.

Hi. This is a mass PM being sent to all managers and facilitators. Most of you know me, and a bunch of you know me pretty well. Take it however you want.

A few days ago, I stepped down from my position as Director of Operations (read: site designer). I had been approached for this position in February, before Matt bought the domain. He asked me to design the site, as I had known him for a long time and he said he respected my work as a designer. He, Aaron and I were to be equal partners.

The other day, I found an upper-level thread in which Matt said he was meeting with a web development company to subcontract the site work out to. This wasn't a big announcement, or even directed to me. After ascertaining that I was, in fact, being replaced without being told or warned, I stepped down. I was told that the meeting was set up because Matt hadn't heard from me for a couple of days, which I had spent working on the back end of the site and posting on various boards Matt has access to (including this one). In the interest of professionalism, I decided to not make a big scene.

Since I stepped down, numerous people have PM'd me, several of whom have described interactions with Matt that fit this same pattern of behavior. I won't bring them up here out of respect for those they happened to - if you don't believe me, feel free to ignore this paragraph.

This morning, I was emailed this link. I, of course, never heard word one about this. During this period of time between him posting the job listing and me stepping down, I had tons of very friendly contact with Matt, including flying from Alabama to Colorado to visit him at his house. I considered him one of my closest friends. I'm not saying this to appear as a victim, I'm trying to give the situation context.

I hate to be sending this, and I really hate drama. But after having talked with others who Matt has treated in the same way, I really don't want it to happen to anyone else. I don't expect it to stay open and visible, but I think it's important that you guys know who's in charge. Like I said, I'd been to the guy's house, bounced around tons of ideas, and worked my ass off for about a month before I saw the thread casually mentioning my replacement. It was unprofessional from a business standpoint, and pretty reprehensible from a personal standpoint.

Like I said, I'm not looking for pity or vengeance. If you guys think I'm a shit-stirrer or a bitter asshole, I'm okay with that - especially if it helps at least one person not get the shaft.

A year or two later, a member here let us know Matt had fallen on hard times, and I believe Jerome passed the hat around and raised a couple thousand dollars and gave it to Matt. In addition, Matt had a signed copy of The Gunslinger that had been gifted to him from the staff here, and needed to sell it. I bought it from Matt and told him I would hold it for a year, and if he wanted buy it back I would sell it to him for exactly what I had paid for it. Nine months later I contacted Matt to see how things were going and if he had planned to buy the book back, and he informed me that he would not be in a position to buy back the book....that things had gotten worse financially for him.....and that I should sell the book.

I ended up selling to book for a little more than I paid for it (to an international collector who I heard some interesting stories about later).

Thing is......inside the book was the receipt from King's attorney purchasing the domain name THEDARKTOWER.COM. I kept that receipt.

That’s Erin. She and Blake (“BlakeMP” screenname mentioned in that post) met on TheDarkTower.net. They lived in different States. Eventually their relationship grew and now they are married and have a cute little son. I’m friends with them both on Facebook, as well as a lot of other former members from the .net and .com days that were not necessarily in the collectible books arena.

After reading all the thread again yesterday, I found out some connections with what happened to forums and groups in Spanish as well. The first group I entered was a YahooGroup (called "Kinghispano") in 2000 or 2001, and there were shitstorms every single day :wtf:. Then groups started to die and I moved to a Spanish forum named Ka-Tet-Corp. All fine until 2010 when a major storm unleashed involving moderators and owners, I got tired and left. I still remain active in a couple of Spanish Facebook groups, have a good time there, but I realized I moved from the position I was 20 years ago. In 2010 the Spanish publisher gave me the management of their social channels that involved Stephen King, and then my book got published and well...doors opened for a lot of opportunities. :)

The only place I never left is this one :) More than 13 years in a row, and counting. And it's BY FAR the place I learnt the most.

IIRC, King paid $10K for the domain name, not the content. I think that Matt and the other 3 owners bought the domain for $10K years previous.. So they broke even on the domain name.

Strictly from fuzzy memory, and apologies if something is repeated.

In 2005 (believed to be May), Michaela Weiner bought dt.net from the previous owner Tyler.

Michaela's husband, Robert Weiner financed Michaela's pet project, and was also using Josh (Co-Owner with Michaela) to redesign the DMG website. Josh received half ownership based upon future deliver of a functional website for DMG books.
Previous owner Tyler had made a desperate please for money from members to keep the site running and to help pay the "new personal PC, hosting and server" costs associated with maintaining the site. If you donated money, you became a special "Ka-Tet" member with a 19 somewhere in your avatar.
Tyler ended up spending the money on a car for himself. Staff and members felt betrayed and were outraged. Tyler justified the auto purchase by claiming that if he didn't have a functional vehicle the site would perish as he couldn't pay the costs necessary to run it (the money members raised in the first place). This was the beginning of the end for Tyler's ownership.

Initially the change of ownership was fantastic and things were peachy.

Collector's gathered and conversed primarily in the Collector part of the forum.

At some point, management made the decision that Collector's not only needed to participate in other areas of the site, but they wanted to require that Collector's contribute to the entire site. Someone else may clarify, but there was a specific plan to do so.

Enter new member "Dolan". Dolan was an abrasive, brash, openly gay, 20ish Collector from New York. Essentially crashing in much like Shannon did, but lacking all of the politeness that Shannon exhibited.

Dolan's avatar was a facial pic of himself. No big deal, except somehow tippy4 (still had the turtle avatar) and Dolan got into it. I remember tippy4 telling Dolan that (paraphrasing) "what kind of a freak uses an actual picture of his ugly face for his avatar?"
A terrible brouhaha ensued. Kenny (Dolan) was want to call anyone he disagreed with a "fucker, asshole, etc." openly in posts. He was very profane and insulting. Thus the site was a must visit. Everyone was literally sitting by hitting refresh every two minutes for the new combative post to appear. Great great fun.

In their infinite wisdom, Management and staff decided that the best way to corral Dolan was to "Promote him". They correctly figured that once in charge, Dolan would become a bossy, rule enforcing Moderator Nazi.

To be continued-hopefully another 400 words tomorrow.

Palavercon. Held July 22-25, 2005 in Durham New Hampshire, USA (The "Luxurious" New England Center on the campus of The University of New Hampshire).


Held back east the Host(s) were Robert Weiner and his young wife Michaela (with an assist from current member Jonathan Reitan). Several current members attended. IIRC, the convention was held at the same time some US Navy (or other service) people also were at the hotel. There was quite the clash between the (mostly) far left wing Dark Tower fans and the generally right wing military members. Not only in ideology, but in confusion over which group was to have which room/hall for their various events.


I could be wrong, but from what I was told, several artists including Michael Whelan, Phil Hale, Darrel Anderson (who declined due to health reasons), and Rick Berry were scheduled guests and showed their original pieces in the rooms/halls. There was some controversy when a piece or two went missing.


In addition, there were rumors of numerous sexual peccadilloes, including one that would lead to the breakup and divorce of Robert Weiner and Michaela.

Yeap. I remember the gossips that followed and the later break up of Robert and Michaela. The three artist that attended (Whelan, Hale and Berry) created one original painting live that Michaela gave to Karen French (who was working for Grant Books at that moment). I never knew about the sex peccadilloes mentioned but some people said that something happened.

No. That is the guy from the site that she left Robert Weiner for. He was from Atlanta (I can't recall his name). Last I heard from her years ago she was in Sedona, Arizona living with her sister and broke while trying to dispute the Pre-Nup she signed with Robert.

I attended. I still have the grab bag and the turtle necklace made by a MA woman...I did not stay at the hotel so cannot comment on that. First time I met Audrey and Michael though....sat with Audtry most of the time....later I bought a copy of NECON XX that Michaela took with her to the con and got EVERYONE there (including King) to sign it. It must have about 40 signatures of people there. One of a kind!
