I think you linked to a trade edition. The S/L #352 sold for $610.

So here is what you do.....

You offer the buyer (ebay ID bluecurves1) another S/L DT3 and some cash (say $50) for #352.

I have done successful trades like this in the past.

And who knows, maybe bluecurves1 has other DT S/Ls numbered #352?

On a related topic, seeing as #352 went so high, I am going to put copy #209 on auction tomorrow. I already contacted the guy who sold #352, and told him that I would give him a $20 "finders fee" if he was able to get his underbidder to buy it.

Elementary my dear jemaher.

I checked the seller's feedback to see if he had received feedback from the buyer yet and he had not.

I then checked FEEDBACK LEFT FOR OTHERS, and you can see that on Feb 12th, the seller (ldrdoc) left feedback for the buyer (bluecurves1).

Got it! And a person confirmed to me that he owns a complete PC set, the 4th one that I have identified. Apparently there could only be 12 as that is what I am told was the limitation of the S/L Gunslinger Publisher's Copy.

Someone has bid on the EBay auction for the s/l gunslinger and all I can see with the "anonymous" bidding is that their name starts with a "W" and ends with a "6"...hmmmmm....who might have an EBay screenname than starts with a "W". I can't fathom who the possible bidder might be. hehehe!

edit: Oh, I see that Wiz already said "got it" which I guess means he already knows and is saying he is the bidder? I thought I was being all tricky. doh!! If only you could just make a little line at the top and finely erase the back of the "6", then you'd have a matching sweet 145 set and an extra 474 to sell. That'd be sweet. Morally reprehensible, but sweet!

Mr. Rabbit Trick
05-10-2010, 10:26 PM
all I can see with the "anonymous" bidding is that their name starts with a "W" and ends with a "6"...

That is not correct. The "W" and "6" can be anywhere in the username, and in any order.

It is not Wiz who bought it. He was just saying that he got the number for the list.

Shill bidding won't be the problem...a phony, timewasting bid would be...but everybody's got to start somewhere.

Exactly.
If the seller receives the auction ending price- 7.5K (or what ever an auction ends at) all is well. If not, it would be trouble.

You can put #71 on the list as DT, I, III-VII, but no II.

I used to keep the # a secret so I could pounce if I saw a book with the same number and not worry about someone bidding me up, but I sold a couple books with that number recently, and so I'm not as attached as I used to be...

Of course, if anybody has #71 DT II, let me know and I'll trade you my s/l Author's Edition!

#117 is being offered by Quill & Brush

For Stephen King Fans:

The Complete Dark Tower Collection

In Pristine Condition

Includes the first appearance of The Gunslinger, serialized in five issues of Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine from October 1978 to November 1981; all seven limited-edition volumes of The Dark Tower series, each signed by King and the illustrator; and the first trade editions of all seven volumes, including both the first and second editions of The Gunslinger. Remarkably, most of the books are still in the publisher's original shrink-wrap, and the fragile magazines appear new.

KING'S MAGNUM OPUS

The Washington Post's Bill Sheehan called this series "a humane, visionary epic and a true magnum opus" that stands as an "imposing example of pure storytelling," "filled with brilliantly rendered set pieces... cataclysmic encounters and moments of desolating tragedy."

http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs055/1101500338636/img/63.jpg

The Collector

The collector of these volumes acquired all of the Donald M. Grant editions--limited and trade issues--from the publisher at the time of publication. For the Dark Tower series, Grant registered each purchaser's limitation number and as subsequent volumes were published, offered that limitation number to the original purchaser first. All of the limited edition volumes in this collection carry the relatively low limitation number of "117."

After spending nearly 30 years putting together this collection, it is the collector's desire that they remain together. He also offers a few of the original promotional brochures, as well as his money order receipt from 1982 for the purchase of the very first book in the series, The Gunslinger.

The Collection

* The complete set of the first appearance of The Gunslinger serialized in Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine includes:

Vol. 55, No. 4, Oct. 1978. "The Gunslinger," pp. 52-90.

Vol. 58, No. 4, Apr. 1980. "The Way Station," pp. 82-109.

Vol. 60, No. 2, Feb. 1981. "The Oracle and the Mountains," pp. 19-38.

Vol. 61, No. 1, Jul. 1981. "The Slow Mutants," pp. 130-159.

Vol. 61, No. 5, Nov. 1981. "The Gunslinger and the Dark Man," pp. 69-83.

These five parts constitute The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger--begun by King in March 1970 while he was a senior at the University of Maine--all with textual differences from the Grant published version, and all but the first with otherwise unpublished summaries of the preceding parts by King.

* All seven of the first editions, limited issues. Each signed by King and the illustrator of the volume, and issued in a dust jacket and slipcase by Donald M. Grant from 1982 to 2004. All seven volumes are numbered 117. Includes:

THE GUNSLINGER, signed by King and Michael Whelan
THE DRAWING OF THE THREE, signed by King and Phil Hale
THE WASTE LANDS, signed by King and Ned Demaron
WIZARD AND GLASS, signed by King and Dave McKean
THE WOLVES OF CALLA, signed by King and Bernie Wrightson
SONG OF SUSANNAH, signed by King and Darrel Anderson
THE DARK TOWER, signed by King and Michael Whelan

* All seven of the first editions, trade issue, of the above listed volumes, plus the scarce "second edition" of The Gunslinger.

Price for the collection: $14,500 net.

tippy4
03-23-2011, 05:55 PM
The only reason you would email them to tell them that you are the owner of a King S/L, is if they are selling a new King S/L, and they are giving first dibs to owners of the previous King S/L, and you need to provide proof of ownership.

Since they are not currently accepting orders for a new King S/L, there is no reason to contact them.

Thanks carlos! Been away for awhile, but it's nice to be back and know that someone remembers me. :cowboy:

Tell the story!

Did you buy it as a set?

If not, did you put it together a piece at a time?

How long did it take?

Here is my research data (16.05.2011) – which DT books are right now on the internet available. (Took me some hours). Would be cool to have a complete list who has which DT book.
Have that as an excel on my computer.

The real first edition: Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Mercury Press,

I guess you bought Phish's books. Congrats! You missed out on the S/L Little Sisters though, David had that 2 weeks ago. Remember too that there is no Gunslinger numbered that high, they only go to 500.

a fruitless quest i guess:(

NONSENSE! No quest is fruitless! I've got 3 different #'s in my DT Series (8, 32, 67) and still don't even have a S/L Gunslinger (which will probably be ANOTHER # or Letter)!

As long as you are happy when you look at the shelf, all is well!

I'm sure they look good next to the S/L Desperation, S/L From a Buick, and S/L Black House!!!!!!!!

Not at all! Matching numbers is to me a "nice to have" not an "all or nothing." I have Dark Tower I & II #365 and III - VII #363 and that's perfectly fine with me! :)

You can't just post a picture....you have to host it on another server - like Picasa or Shutterfly - and then use the link to that site.

You should contact Grant about that...they wouldn't give you the person's info, but they might contact them to see if they had any interest in selling.

If you have a LSOE, you might be able to do a trade with some $$. Good luck!

Wow, I just have to say that's SO COOL that you (and the Grant establishment) do that for people. It makes me think really highly of the people there and I just hope I can get my hands on a LSOE so I can buy my first S/L from you all... having not so long ago finally gotten into the series.

I don't really understand the numbered set goal, but it's very cool that people have done it. I'm still trying to get a full set of 1sts though.. so first thing first =)

Thank you, mistercrowley.

Since you asked:

Nov. 2004: DT II, III, IV - Barry R. Levin Science Fiction & Fantasy. I heard about the whole S/L concept at the old TDT.net forums and decided to look into purchasing some. I saw these on ABE listed separately, called up Barry, and worked out a discounted "volume discount" deal.

June 2011: LSOE, LSOE AE - John Hanic. He bought them on eBay in order to secure the right to purchase TWITKH. I bought another set specifically to trade with John, so he could still get TWITKH.

Oct 2011: I can't attend the King reception and signing at Fall of the Books back East, so Ralph Mulleins takes my 1st/1st of The Gunslinger (not pictured above) to the signing.

Nov 2011: DTIV UK (not really necessary for a complete set) - In January 2011 I just missed this at Betts - saw one of those SOLD signs that David puts out before removing items from the site. I contacted David, but it was too late. He had just shipped it out to a buyer in Australia. Flash forward ten months: Recently while perusing the forum over at CD, I ran across a photo of the book in someone's collection thread. I contacted the owner and we worked a straight across trade. He's not a member here at TDT, but thanks, Grant!

Dec 2011: DT V, VI, VII: Simon had recently purchased these at a Heritage auction I missed. He posted here at TDT looking for the others. We worked out a sale/purchase.

Here is the set again, including my signed (but not S/L) 1st/1st edition of DTI:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books%20II/King-DTSLmatchI_2.jpg

I turned on a lot of lights, then turned off the flash. I'm still experimenting with that concept, I don't have one of those shadowboxes that our better resident photographers use.

How true how true! I had a full #64 set except Gunslinger and had decided I'd never find it - the only one in the world and the world's a big place. Lo and behold, a new member in the UK posted here in this very thread that he had it. Well, needless to say I got in touch! We emailed back and forth - made the deal and were trying to decide the best way to ship this one-of-a-kind without me having to mortage my house. About a year after his post, he was visiting the states and I took a day to fly from IL to FL and back just to meet up with he and his wife at the airport - oh, and to buy my #64 from him, of course! Very nice couple celebrating their anniversary. He doesn't post much, but I'll never forget him. This site rules!! So don't give up - you may come accross that W&G 158 when you least expect it!

And it was a VERY long day, Juliana! Left here on a 6:30 am flight to Memphis, then to Atlanta, then to Sarasota. Had a 3 hour layover then flew home via Atlanta, getting home around midnight. My friends and family thought I was nuts (and still do, kinda), but it was cheaper than shipping from the UK and didn't have to worry about it being lost!

gsvec,
What a fantastic story !!
Ironically, your story gives me hope to complete my #79 collection.
Congratulations

And darn it, now you've made me want to go after that UK WIZARD & GLASS, but I'd never find a 158.As far as the UK W&G, you never know when your number might show up.

So don't give up - you may come accross that W&G 158 when you least expect it!

the quest is definitely part of the allure. I grew my Dt set #29 from the gunslinger up but somehow missed the legends sl with the original LSOE... years later I came across #29 and was outbid on ebay... much later I was able to buy it in a private sale....but i paid quite the premium... had i purchased it at the time it was published, I could have bought 5 copies for the same money

So with this said... there is no premium for having a match set? agree or disagree?

divemaster
03-14-2012, 05:00 PM
I mentally pencil it out as such:

I: $4,500 - $5,000
II: $800 - $1,200
III: $400
IV: $600
V, VI, and VII: $400 each
LSOE (normal): $300
TWTTK: $350 retail

Add or subtract based on condition. Individual books with # less than 501 will likely add. A full number set together will add somewhat b/c of the actual number (<501) and also the premium of not having to search all over for various books--they are already together for you.

Getting out my calculator and I see that AKC is spot on with $9,000 - $9,500.

RIC #520

LSOE (normal): $300
TWTTK: $350 retail

Do you have any S/N for sell at this price? The actural number do not matter.. In fact for both, I will bump it up to $700

divemaster
03-14-2012, 05:11 PM
LSOE was not selling for anywhere near $700 until TWTTK was announced. I assume once the "get the low number" frenzy is over, LSOE will drop back down.

I don't know what to say about TWTTK. The retail price was $350 and you can figure 800 sold at this price so for right now the average price will be right around $350. That's what I paid. How many of those 800 will try to flip for a profit and what will it go for? I have no idea. Have to see what the market will bear.

RIC #520
03-14-2012, 05:38 PM
The flippers will try to double the money.. so they will be start at $700 and above. Back to original question, I still don't see a (sale) premium for having a matching number set. I am saying that I believe the books are worth as much (maybe more) individually than they are in a matching set. A match set is nice to have, but it does not add any addition value…

divemaster
03-14-2012, 05:47 PM
Value can be measured in two ways.

1. What does the market say? For that, look at overall recent sales and come up with a ballpark figure or average.

2. What does an individual collector say? This could be all over the map. For example, I, personally, would pay more for a same-number Dark Tower set than for an assortment of random numbers in individual books. Maybe a 10% premium. You obviously would not. I would buy a book with a (slightly) damaged slipcase b/c I don't give a rat's ass about the slipcase. Some collectors wouldn't touch a book with a nicked slipcase. Etc.

You started out by asking a question, now you have rendered an opinion. Perhaps you answered your own question-or you just wish for a healthy debate.

RIC #520
03-14-2012, 07:49 PM
No .. I am not rendering an opinion, more of an observation from the previous posts. I just trying to make sense out of the price estimates offer in previous posts ... The estimate that was made in this thread was that the matching set value is $9,000 - $9,500, not the $ 11K minimum bid being asked by the UK seller. It appears to me when the values were broken down by divemaster. He describe as “shot on” the match set price by AKC. If the UK seller can get 11K, then he would be getting a premium ($1500- $2000). If he has to drop his price to $9,000 - $9,500 to sell, then the match set is nice to have, but it does not add any addition value. I too put a lot more personal value on match set than random numbers in individual books. The value I am discussing is “sell value”, in reference to the UK posting the comment about being listed "again". I am interested in your opinion Randall and others.

divemaster
03-15-2012, 01:17 AM
OK, let's look at my math. In my above post I penciled out a range of $8,150 to $9,050 for the complete set individually. There will be a range depending on condition and of course room for dickering. Most of the value will be in book I so the condition of that book would strongly influence the overall set price.

I mentioned a premium for a "full number set together" (in a later post I said to me it would be worth about 10%). That increases my estimated range to $8,965 to $9,955, which is very close ("spot on") to what AKC estimated for a complete set.

As for the UK seller asking $11,000? Did he get that? People can ask whatever they want and the books might never sell. There's an eBay auction that has been reposted for years asking $20,000 for a full number set. So it doesn't sell either.

Will the UK seller get $11,000 in today's market? Doubtful, but you never know. Like I said, there may be an individual collector that has a lot of money and just says, "fuck it, I'll pay $11,000 to grab this and not have to worry about it anymore or have to chase down a set volume by volume." But truthfully, if you want to talk "sell value" I think about $9,000-$9,500 for a full number set is a very good ballpark. If you want to track down individual books separately, if you are diligent and patient you could probably complete a set like that for less than that. Like maybe 10% less. Of course, your numbers would not all match.

AKC

$9,000 - $9,500......

FYI, that does reflect a bit of "premium" for a matching set.

I've bought TWO sets of Matching DT III - DTVII + LSOE + TWTTK for $4,000 in the last two months. I've also bought a #'d Gunslinger for $4,000. Throw in a matching DT II for a $1,000 when I find it and that'll get you ONLY to $9,000.

Pay a $500.00 premium for a matching set? OK, then you are at $9,500.

$9,000 - $9,500 CURRENT MARKET VALUE any way you look at it. Wouldn't pay a dime more......

divemaster

RIC #520, here's another consideration and a follow-up to what I was saying earlier. "Market value" is not an exact fixed point. It fluctuates and different people will have different opinions. The differences might be slight ($50 for this book; $70 for that book, etc.) but they are there.

Buyer 1 may have a targeted price point based on his intention to re-sell at some point. This person would like to make some sort of profit. So Buyer 1 may only buy at the lowest end of the range, and not a penny more. They want to make money on an investment.

Buyer 2 has no intention to re-sell. He just wants the books. He might grab an eBay auction or such and be willing to pay a higher price than Buyer 1.

So what is "market value"? What Buyer 1 is willing to pay or what Buyer 2 is willing to pay?

I, personally, am a Buyer 2. My main goal is filling the holes in my collection. If there's something I really want and doesn't come up for sale very often, I migh overpay a bit (like, say, a 10% premium) just to have it. If I just get a tax refund and am feeling flush I might jump at a sale I wouldn't have when feeling the pinch. In fact, I just bought a S/L Danse Macabre this week becasue I've always wanted it and I don't see them come up for sale all that often. It was offered and I jumped.

A matched set is obviously worth more - it's more unique, more difficult to find, etc. There's no doubt that's true.

However, finding the market for a matched set - especially with it up to 9 books now - is the hard part. Basically, it's a buyer who is going to jump in with both feet all at once...or try to sell their current collection to cover the cost.

It's not like there's 50 people lined up ready to pay $11K or whatever for a matched set.

If you already have 2-3 books, you might buy an unmatched as opposed to matched, just to avoid duplication. That would make sense.

But nobody's going to pay more for an unmatched set...there'd be no reason to. If you're in the market for a full set, and there were two for sale, one matched, one unmatched, I don't think anyone here would deliberately choose the unmatched set if all other factors were equal. If somebody would - that's great, but it wouldn't make sense to me, that's all.

Great response Divemaster. I would say that I am the Buyer 2, especially for items below a couple hundred dollars. More expensive items, I try be buyer 1, if an item that I have been looking for a long time, then sometimes I many go a little overboard.. if you know what I mean…. . I have more experience in coin collecting and in my experience, as the price of a piece increases, then buyer drifts naturally more towards buyer 1. I have sold many $25 coins on ebay, and the bidding could sometimes go 100-200% more than I have hoped. This doesn’t ever happen with a $500. $1000, $2000 coin. I have been reading and collecting Stevie since the summer of 81. I would estimate 700-800 pieces in my collection. I may have sold a dozen or so King pieces, because I upgraded. So, I am not a seller of King material. I really enjoy the search of the hobby. Some reason the search for King material is more entertaining than any other hobby.. Just recently, I have expanded my collection to include S/N II-VII. I think I purchased them a good price. I am thinking about the best approach to complete the set. I once thought from places like ABE, ebay buy-now, The Collector, etc. that you would have to pay 18-25k for a matching set. I think that that would be a nice premium and really worthwhile for work that would go into building and matching one. I am coming to realize (many of you may disagree and I welcome that, I learn from others) from my observation of the guy trying to sell the UK set for $11k, that may not be the case. In fact, it may cost more to build a matching set from scratch than to negotiate a purchase price… Thoughts?

Well, with the new Dark Tower book shipping now, prices for DT sets, partials, full and full same-number have increased. I've sold 3 complete same-number sets 1-7 + LSOE all at $10,000+ in the last 9 months...one set included Desperation matching number and sold for $12,500!

That said, I think value today WITH the new DT book is $9500-$10,000 as a good deal.

So what might a set consisting of all 8 DT novels, DESPERATION, THE TALISMAN and CHRISTINE (all the same number, all brand new and never opened more than an inch) go for, do you think? I am just curious, have no intention of selling them.

tippy4
04-23-2012, 06:46 PM
Then why do you want to know?

Ha ha...just being a smartass....mostly.

The fact that the Desperation, Talisman, and Christine have numbers that match your DT set adds no extra value to them.

I would ballpark all the books at $9,500-$11,000.

Rahfa
04-24-2012, 08:36 AM
Well - I don't agree that it adds no extra value...I think to the right person at the right time, it adds a LOT of extra value.

Of course, I say that as someone who has 22 books with the same number, inc. Desp., Christine, Danse, and many others...

But...the problem is the "right person at the right time" part. Basically, the only customer is a brand new collector who wants to jump in with both feet and buy an almost-complete collection all at once. If you already have half those books, and the number doesn't really interest you, then you're not a customer at any price above the normal value.

Or, the customer could be somebody like Bob or Betts who takes a leap at something very unique that they don't already have in some form...but they aren't going to pay extra for it, since they'll have their eye on it as an investment/resale...or they'll look at it as a curioisity that's neat to have, but not worth jumping through hoops for.

Or, it's a normal collector who is willing to buy this matched set, and maybe sell their other books to offset the cost...that's the likeliest customer to pay anything over and above the market price for all the books.

Having said that - I think the three books you mention get your full set to about $11K...but it would take a lot of time to actually get that price.

I would value my set at $16K minimum. It's below #100, and would be difficult to duplicate - and it even has an Author's Copy in place of the numbered DT II, so you'd still have something to hunt for!

Haha...yeah, it would take awhile - but that's why it's worth a lot, because it goes both ways. That buyer won't have any other choices. If you want a super-matched set, then there's only going to be a VERY tiny handful to choose from.

So if you want it, you gotta pay.

This could be me one of these days, for the nine Dark Tower books. I've got matched #464 for six of them, plus mis-matched #s for two others. I could see myself buying a full matched number set and then selling what I've got now to offset the cost. However, I don't see myself doing the same for other Grant books. I don't really care what numbers those are.

Up to this point, I always thought of the challenge of getting the S/L from Grant part of the excitement of collecting Dark Tower. I should have been a bit smarter/richer back when I started and bought a secondary market S/L for DTII so I could have progressed from there. Since I didn't win any lottery until DTVII, my collection is just a hodge podge of a few S/L's filled out with artist and/or other first editions. The UK Waterstones S/L is quite a departure for me.

I almost lucked into a complete set when I met my husband's extended family. One of his aunt's had a complete set going back to DTI (I don't know the number), but she died before I had a chance to know the family well enough to "inherit" the set. The remaining family has fallen away a bit, so I don't even really have a chance to get the ones that are there, which is a shame. :(

Does anyone in the loop know of a near complete set under the family name Jenkins in Texas? She is the deceased aunt of my hubby, and I know she had at least some if not all of them, but unfortunately she died before I could really chat her up about her collection and that branch of the family has grown a little distant. I'd step on a few toes if I made inroads with them about her book collection, but I will if that collection is in danger of dying out. I've already made a few veiled inquiries, but haven't been able to make my point about keeping the collection complete with them yet. Does anyone what extent this collection is in? I'm afraid that I don't even know a number, I just know that I saw the collection in her bookcase the 1 time I was able to meet her.

I donīt know who this is from the listing: #157 **** (I-VII complete, Greg [dt.net]) , but i figured he might be interested in the UK S/L Wizard and Glass with the same number .

If anyone know him let him know that this book is available on ebay .

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wizard-and-Glass-by-Stephen-King-UK-Limited-Edition-/261027328028?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item3cc670f01c

Searching my swiss cheese brain...searching. Pretty sure Greg is a UK collector. I know that does not help much.....but I hope he sees the auction...As a Dark Tower fanatic myself, by pure luck I was able to find the UK S/L W&G AND the Gunslinger S/L tapes that both matched one of mu same-number sets (#296) plus I have all 4 of Whelan's original DT prints all #296....pretty cool (for me anyway)

Greg, if it's any consolation:

I missed my matching number UK W&G by a week or so when David at Bett's had it for sale. He had just shipped it off to a collector in Australia, so I bought a different copy from Bett's. A year or so later I ran across the other collector on the Cemetery Dance board. We worked a straight trade. He got a more pristine copy of the book, and I got my matching number.

So there is still hope!

Thank you for trying to make things a little more palatable, but hey ho, never mind. I did notice after a closer look at the auction it was U.S. and Canada shipping only so it's probably a good thing.

Feel free to point out what needs to be updated. It is "kinda" David's baby, but I am happy to edit the first post (OR Brice, Nerak, Patrick etc.).
We aim to please.
That being said, unless someone poaches our list, it is the best, most current list in the world.

Hello,
Update.
I am now the very proud owner of DT #214 from book 3 (waselands)-keyhole. Looking for drawing of the three and gunslinger #214. I have f/f #309 of gunslinger i believe, and also have a different Drawing of the three.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks,
Simon

The opening bid is high enough that there is not enough "meat on the bone" for the resellers, but if there is a collector out there who has the funds to buy it all in one swoop like that, it's not a bad price.

He would be better off splittting it up and selling The Gunslinger as one lot, The DotT as a 2nd lot, the rest of the books as a 3rd lot, and the picture as a 4th lot.

So...just to throw a monkey-wrench into the works.....

I would argue that unlike TLSOE, TWTTK is required for those sets numbered 1-500 to make a "complete set".

The fact that the title of the book is "The Dark Tower: The Wind Through The Keyhole" kinda seals the deal for me.

However, the book differs from the previous 7 volumes in that it come in a traycase vs. a slipcase.

Thoughts?

I tend to agree with you, Tippy. The title tells it all.

The series finished in 2004 with The Dark Tower. Anyone who has read the books would know that. There could be a thousand stories released after DTVII, but none of them matter.

How many Matrix books are there? How many Star Wars books are there?

I think a "Complete set" would be DTI-DTVII (obviously) #1-#500. That was and always will be the set. A bonus would be LSOE <501, and a TWTTK <501 (matching is the best). Also, purely hypothetical, but if King does a re-write or a DT 1.5, 2.5 etc. Having a#500 or less will be important, but not crucial.
Bottom line is that DTI-DTVII <=#500 are the set. Other books and matching numbers are a bonus-but only really valuable if the next Grant book is cut to a 600 limitation-thus the Garnt TWTTK <#601 will be in demand.

I have to disagree with you Mr. Rabbit, no disrespect.
It's still part of the story, still the same author, not that it matters but TWTTK is also the same publisher.

Before this disagreement gets completely out of hand, I think we should established new descriptions as follows:
Complete Set: DTI – DTVII
Complete Expanded Set: DTI – DTVII, LSOE, TWTTK
That should work for everyone

If one owns DTI-DTVII <#501, the bonus of LSOE and TWTK could add value, but the real and ONLY money is in a S/L DTI. The rest can be bought and sold (any particular one individually), at less than $1K each-far less.
The only people who IMO debate this are those who have any DT book >#500. I would bet that 90% of the people who have a complete set of DT-DTVII also have the matching # LSOE, and TWTTK.

Good point. I meant a matching # DtI-DTVII, but I suppose a disparate set could be mismatched numbers, and worth less than a matching # set, but I stand by my opinion that the S/L DTI is where the cost/value/buying price/selling price is by far the most expensive.

Patrick
07-01-2012, 11:34 PM
I lean toward tippy's opinion that TWTTKH is a necessary piece of a matched set, while LSOE is bonus.

Also, I would think RF is probably correct that the vast majority the people who have a complete set of DT-DTVII also have the matching # LSOE, and TWTTK.

Mr. Rabbit Trick

So what about the Viking "Gunslinger"? This book is written by King. It is a complete re-write of the 1st book. Surely if you include LSOE you should include the 1st printing before the reprint.

EDIT: Just realised the Viking is not a S/L, so my thoughts are in the wrong thread.

Here it is.. 5 levels from 1 to 6 with 1 the best…you could argue that set 3 could be more expense that set two..
1. Complete Matching Expanded Set: DTI – DTVII, LSOE, TWTTK
2. Complete Matching Set: DTI – DTVII
3. Complete Expanded Set: DTI – DTVII, LSOE, TWTTK (all 9 books, numbers no concern)
4. Complete Set DTI – DTVII (7 books, numbers no concern)
5. Original Matching Set: DT1-DTIV
6. Incomplete Set (usually missing DT1)

I have no idea how to start a poll, but the question is:

What is required to make a complete, same number S/L set of The Dark Tower?

1. DTI, DT2, DT3, DT4, DT5, DT6, DT7
2. DTI, DT2, DT3, DT4, DT5, DT6, DT7, TWTTK
3. DTI, DT2, DT3, DT4, DT5, DT6, DT7, TWTTK, LSOE

I am NOT including the following combination on purpose:

4. DTI, DT2, DT3, DT4, DT5, DT6, DT7, LSOE

I consider:

#1 a "Classic Complete Set" (for the obvious reasons).

#2 a "Curmudgeon's Complete Set" ("Bah, humbug, LSOE is just a bunch of reprints.")

#3 a Full, Complete Set.

and finally, I consider:

#4 a "WTF?! Complete Set" (How the f*** do you end up with a matching set including LSOE, and not buy TWTTKH?)
