No

So a friend in the UK picked up his Goldsboro copy and said there was also no hologram. Goldsboro is looking into it. I'm betting it's the same deal. Stickers are an added expense that they worked around (guessing).

I believe the signed edition was released after the original release. Even has its own number line separate from the regular edition.

In case anyone else wants to give this book a shot, I still see it listed on Amazon from the same seller at $125 HERE (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0316353728/ref=tmm_other_meta_binding_collectible_olp_sr?ie=U TF8&condition=collectible&qid=1445527766&sr=1-1)

WOW, someone now has this ISBN listed on Abebooks for $786.31 HERE (http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?isbn=9780316353724&sts=t).

Received email from the seller:

Hello & Thank You for your purchase of Career of Evil.
I have posted a new listing on Ebay (171977000846) for this signed title,
which includes a picture of the actual publishers shipping label for this book.
I thought that you might wish to know, so that you may copy and print it for your records in order to establish a strong provenance for the authors authentic signature.
Thanks again, Mike @ Mike's Collectable Book

I dunno. I'm kinda like that guy from Pawn Stars - that really doesn't prove any specific book came from that box.
Has anyone Tweeted Galbraith or Rowling and mentioned signed books floating around with no hologram? I don't do social media, but maybe someone does. Might get a response.
Or I just could be missing the sale of the century...

No one got holograms this time. Only a special ISBN number on the copyright page. Goldsboro didn't receive any in the UK either.

If she decided not to do holograms this time, that's cool. Kind of disappointing since that was the one thing that guaranteed her signature post-2007.

Still odd that this one seller is the only one selling US signed copies that I can see on eBay. Did he get the only case?

Got mine today from Mike's Collectibles via the first EBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/171974263807?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) auction. I say this is fully legitimate. The signature is on a separate page bound in and the ISBN number on the back of the dust jacket is for the signed. Signature looks like other legitimate ones I have seen online, at least! If you put them next to each other, they really don't look the same - but again, as pseudonym signatures, she probably can't duplicate it the same each time:

I think they have the same lines. The first is from Silkworm though. You might try comparing the two new sigs. I know she had a hard time coming up with the signature and it's not an easy one for her to sign.

It certainly seems like a legit release. I don't collect Rowling at all, so I suppose for me it's all moot, but it's been an interesting development. I do wonder about any potential resale, given the hologram caution on her own site. I suppose the copyright page and its mention of the signed edition probably takes care of that issue...probably.

I didn't like that it was a private listing. Makes me feel as if he has a few more and is trying to set the price. There were quite a few up for sale for $89 - 175 so not sure why all of a sudden this would go for $400+

jsmcmullen92
10-26-2015, 05:52 AM
That is exactly what I thought would happen. I wonder if the book that was bid on will ever ship or not.

I don't think Galbraith sig is worth anywhere near Rowling's but that is just my opinion. Yes it is the same person but it is known that she is Robert and she is famous for her Rowling work.

This is what I think - he's the exclusive seller like Goldsboro in the UK. He's probably sold at least 75 copies (60+ for sure on Ebay plus those on Alibris and Amazon). I wouldn't think there would be more than 200 or so signed copies - maybe only 100 for the US since they haven't popped up anywhere else? Goldsboro got 250 last time. Not sure how many they got this time?

ELazansky
10-26-2015, 09:07 AM
That may be true, but at least Goldsboro has a website open to anyone. Seems odd that the publisher would only give this one seller the signed books so he could sell them on eBay.

Found out some info on the UK editions if anyone is interested:

There are very few signed first editions of Career of Evil, certainly fewer than the previous Galbraith novel and possibly fewer than the first novel, The Cuckoo's Calling. Surprisingly, none of the few signed first editions of Career of Evil that came from the publisher have the J. K. Rowling hologram. However, it's worth noting that the signed edition differs on the copyright page from the regular trade hardcover. This printing difference can help to easily identify the authenticity of the signed edition. Firstly, on the signed first edition, the copyright is attributed to J. K. Rowling whereas on the regular unsigned first edition, it is attributed to Robert Galbraith. Also, on line 5 of the copyright page the signed edition reads: "See pages 491-504 for full credits. Selected Blue Öyster Cult lyrics 1967-1994 by kind permission of Sony/ATV Music Publishing (UK) Ltd" On the unsigned first edition a much simpler line is in its place which reads: "Credits for chapter epigraphs on page 491." This book also has 2 variant dust jackets. Both jackets have quotes on the back but one credits those quotes whilst the other does not.

I looked on EBay (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1311.R1.TR7.TRC2.A0.H0.Xhar ry+potter+aud.TRS0&_nkw=harry+potter+audio+books&_sacat=0) and saw a few auctions for those replacement CDs, and it appears that each HP audio book came out on a bunch of CDs (for example, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenixcame on 23 CDs!) So these are just replacement discs for one or more of the specific CDs in the set for that one book.

I do see a listing for the complete set in MP3 format on a DVD HERE (http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-Audiobook-Harry-Potter-Complete-Books-Series-By-J-K-Rowlings-Mp3-Form-DVD-/281834484532?hash=item419ea4f334:g:zuMAAOSw~bFWJyE O) that you may be able to extract to CDs. It claims to be fully licensed.

Went to Costco today - they had us career of evil - just regular HC, not signed. But the copyright page did list the 4 separate isbn - HC, large print, international pb, signed edition - just like the copyright page on my us signed edition. So only difference on us copies I've physically seen is dj isbn and sig page. The us dj had quotes that were attributed to someone just like the signed edition dj

Well we have some clarity on this issue - today Becca and I got the same email:

Chad,

A limited number of signed editions were offered in the US by these bookstores:

Poisoned Pen Bookstore
Chaucers
Mysterious Galaxy

I don’t know if they have any more signed editions in stock, but you are welcome to get in touch with them to find out!

Happy hunting,
Pamela Brown
Mulholland Books

Except hers wasn't to Chad :)
Only 3 weeks after we sent inquiry - but at least got a reply. Each store only got about 12 copies back when book was released. Nothing on their site about signed copies - as in store only. And yes we already called each store and there were a few copies left between the stores - about 6 total left - all gone now (or at least what they told us). And those were at publisher price of $28 plus shipping - so the best deal around.

If mike had 50-75, then there were probably around 100 signed US copies by our assumption. Sent another email to Pam - so we will see if we get another reply.

Btw mullholland books won't be issuing stickers:

SOLD - no longer available. What's interesting is that was from poisoned pen - 1 of the 3 Indy shops that each received about 12 copies. I had called them and got a copy directly for $35. A few other people called and then they said they no longer had copies. So I guess they just decided to put their remaining copy (s) on Abe's after seeing what they were commanding. How does that hold for future signed books? Will local shops start selling on eBay/Abe's to get more money - should they be considered different than individual sellers? Now most of their stock was sold at retail price - but what if they decided to sell them all at inflated prices like the other person who initially flooded the market with about 50 copies?

I don't have an answer, just raising the questions. I've noticed recently that other brick n mortar shops - like Goldsboro will start raising their book prices as fewer remain - even though these were just recently released. It has put me off to buying some of these books.

That's crazy! I told you they had more copies because when I called they said they were getting low and then the next person to call was told they were sold out.

I guess they would argue free market?? However, I just assumed a higher moral value from the regular stores. For that matter why wouldn't someone from mullholland press just take the books and sell on eBay. Maybe it was the fact that they received 3-4 calls in 5 minutes for the same book. But yes I agree - that's crazy - and if I had called and was told they were sold out I'd be pissed.

That reminds me of an eBay seller I no longer do business with. I got a nice deal on a book - but they shipped the wrong book. I got my refund, a few weeks later they had the same book - but listed for about $200 more than I had originally paid. I asked the seller if I could get that copy for the price I had just paid - since they had sent the wrong copy - but they had refused (and were pretty rude about it). I later got the book from betts - it was one of grants books - so n the end I was much happier with that transaction.

It's actually only one, the 3 referenced on that page are all the copies listed on ABE.

I may be in the minority in this but I don't have an issue with independent bookstores raising prices as the market dictates. Obviously lying about what they have in stock is different.

cit74
12-09-2015, 07:26 AM
But does that mean when these stores initially get their stock that they'll automatically raise the prices and not even offer them at retail price? How about next years book? Do you sell 90% through the store at retail and place the last copy (or 2) on Abe's or increased price on website? These weren't even listed on their website when first out - in store only. None of the stores had them listed on their website. I wouldn't want them to increase price on all books as soon as they receive them - but couldn't you see that happening next year? For some reason I don't see mysterious galaxy raising the prices of their signed books - when they can be found higher elsewhere. Signed copies of welcome to nightvale have gone up a bit - but they were still regular price on their website when I got my copy.

Does that include an online only bookseller? Mike's Collectables never sold any of the copies for retail price. I would think he should be considered an online retail store if he can buy in bulk direct from the publisher (he does have a store website)?

I don't think they should start out with an increased price. If they did that they probably wouldn't sell any.

From my experience with the Poisoned Pen, when they get signed books from an author like Rowling they keep them off the site to prevent someone from ordering all of them, especially if they are getting so few copies. They also tend to hold copies for their best customers, i.e those that are buying just about everything they sell (I am definitely not one of these). They did this with Dan Brown's last book. Also, the copy the Pen has up on ABE is about $300 less then the other copies for sale. If this copy sells it would appear they only made a large profit on 2 of the x number of books they got.

The reason I don't have a problem with the practice is that these independent stores can almost live off these high valued books, much like a small press can live off publishing a book by King. People will buy these, regardless of the price. Being able to make extra money on these not only allows them to stay open but they can then carry books by lesser known authors and get another author or two to come for a signing.

Regarding Mysterious Galaxy, thats great that they are doing enough business that they don't have to increase their prices like many other places do.

Like I said, this is just my opinion on the matter, but I get where your coming from.

I've had this ever since the book came out and I don't know what to do with it or what the value would be. I picked this up at the cashier stand of one of the mall bookstores back in the day, I'm thinking Walden's or B. Dalton. It was just sitting on the counter for anyone to pick up. It's a first chapter preview of the book and what is interesting, to me, is that it is just stapled together and there is no other advertising or anything to announce it's a preview or some promotional offering.

Anyone care to chime in and guess to the rarity and potential value? I have no real attachment to it in case someone wants to make an offer.

I dont think that the book THE HARRY POTTER JOURNEY mentions it. I have found the following, but I think that it is a different item.

"Bloomsbury published the Bloomsbury Autumn Highlights, June to December 1997 in May, in order to promote the new work of 25 authors of their forthcoming autumn 1997 list. That was the first time that a Harry Potter block of text appeared, containing a 14-pages extract of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This item is highly collectable and hard to find, because only few people know about it, and the lucky person who got one back then, hardly noticed its future value and eventually threw it away. During that time, the proof copy of the book was being sent to booksellers and journalists to gain some attraction and have some press."

There is one on abebooks for over $ 3K

There is a Harry Potter play opening in the West End (London) this year: http://www.harrypottertheplay.com/
It is set some years after the films and features Harry's son.

The story is so long it is split into 2 separate plays and when you get tickets you buy 'part one' and a 'part two' ticket, so you go to see both performances to get the whole story.

I assume this book is the script of the two parts of the play.

From the info, I think JK Rowling wrote the story and then someone else adapted this to a script for the plays
"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is written by British playwright Jack Thorne, based on an original story by J. K. Rowling, Thorne and John Tiffany"

http://www.ew.com/article/2016/02/11/jk-rowling-cursed-child-book

Major Harry Potter news rushed around the Internet Wednesday when Scholastic announced it would release the script to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the play author J.K. Rowling wrote about the Wizarding World, as its own book.

Many fans took this to mean that there would be an eighth Harry Potter book due out this year. But Rowling clarified via Twitter that the manuscript is not part of her series.

“To be clear!” she tweeted. “The SCRIPT of #CursedChild is being published. #NotANovel #NotAPrequel”

Rowling has been saying over and over since Cursed Child was announced that the script is not a sequel, not a prequel. The plot takes place after the initial book series finisihed, as Harry looks back on his life. A press release from Scholastic announcing the book said, “It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes darkness comes from unexpected places.”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will debut in London’s West End this summer and Scholastic will release the script in book form on July 31, Harry Potter’s birthday.

I'd buy two at that $125 price today. (One for myself, one as a gift.)

I ended up getting one of these (1st/1st USA Cuckoo's) as a gift so now I have 2. If anyone wants one (brand new and unread) for $125 shipped hit me up via PM.

I agree but I really like what Jim Kay does. I think it would be a great way to read the book with kids (Definitely a nighttime sit down read. Not a try and hold it up to read it) . A great story with pictures to engage them though.

I'll post a picture when I get home tonight but my UK Deluxe HP Philosopher's Stone Illustrated edition came in last night. I think calling this book HUGE is an understatement. I am really curious how they will do this with the later releases, book 4, 5, & 7 will have to weigh upwards of 25 to 30lbs. I will say the book is beautiful and glad I ordered it.
One thing I thought I remembered is when it came out I thought the Deluxe version was going to be signed by Jim Kay but maybe that was a limited Deluxe edition

Final burst of questions about these and then I promise to leave you all alone:

The exteriors are great, but how are the interiors (illustrations (if any), features such as two-color printing (if any), etc.)? I haven't seen pictures online.

Are the books heavy (I like me a heavy book)?

Are these only (initially) available through the link in my post above (which is a UK link)? I was not able to find them on Barnes & Noble, Amazon, or the conventional Bloomsbury website and just wondering if this should be considered "the source."

Is it known how large the runs are for the 4 on that site; are they expected to sell out (soon)? I'd like to round them up for my daughter, and though it needn't be all at once, I'd hate to build her a collection that's missing one because I timed it wrong etc.

FWIW, I don't care a bit if they are 1st printings or 100th, as long as they are the same general product.

becca69
08-30-2016, 09:28 AM
They are not illustrated (other than stars on the chapter headers) but have illustrated end pages, a ribbon marker, linen covered boards with gilt stamping - no dust jackets. They are nice quality and relatively heavy for their size. They are UK printings which is why you can't find them on the US sites/stores.

I got mine thru the Book Depository with free shipping.

I really wished these would have been issued signed by the illustrator. If they had been, I would certainly have jumped on them.

PS: If anyone is attending the Jim Kay signing and have a illustrated 1st trade of Philosopher's Stone to be signed, please let me know.

I have made a few small updates to my HP collection. Thanks to Ralph here I now own a copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard Limited edition as well as a 1/1 US print and 1/1 UK print.

In addition he also added in a cool item I did not know existed called "What's your story". It is a post card collection of very short stories by famous authors with one by J.K. Rowling set in the HP world.

So over the last few months I have been working on a very large project. First here is a little background.
Harry Potter was one of the first series that really got me into reading, as each on came out I would read a little more each year until now when I read almost 20 books a year while working full time. Since I have such a large respect for this series I decided to get my original set of HP books rebound. I tried to pay an homage to the originals trying to stay close to the original color scheme of the 7 books with some nice flair here and there as well as a very distinctive look.
Since I am lazy and have not done the photos of all the books yet you just get a teaser of book 1.

So I present to you,
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Original Cover.
Half Bound red cloth over purple paper boards with teal end papers.

I'm not sure I agree (and it's not because I'm the one selling) but her signed Giclee prints are bringing in $300+

The "Midnight Madness" event only allowed (if I remember right) 200 tickets. I know it's not valued above the $150 I have in it, but I do think it has good value for a collector of HP books.

Anyway, it's for sale if a collector wants to make an offer. Thanks for all the input guys.

I certainly would rather have her signature on limited Giclee than in a book illustrated by her. But, it would make a nice addition to someone's collection.

I see your side and respect it. As a book collector though, I would rather have the artist signature in a book. Example; I love Michael Whelans signature on art hanging on the wall, but personally I get more enjoyment having it in the book. Again, that's just because I collect books way more than I do artwork.

They've really dropped in recent years - i paid 150 for an unsigned first awhile ago when back when they were released they were going for 700-1000.

I would still venture to guess they command a premium around 1000-1500. nowhere near the 2,000-3,000 that was being paid for them on release.

If you decide to part with it I would be interested in a trade if you are open to it.

From the CNBC website:

Two new books from the Harry Potter universe are set to be released as part of a British exhibition that celebrates the 20th anniversary of the launch of the series.

The British Library's Harry Potter exhibition, "A History of Magic," opens in October and runs through February 2018. In an earnings statement released Tuesday, British publishing house Bloomsbury revealed that two new Potter books will be released in conjunction with the event.

"Harry Potter: A History of Magic - The Book of the Exhibition" promises to take readers through subjects studied at Potter's wizarding school, Hogwarts. "Harry Potter—A Journey Through A History of Magic" will touch on mystical things such as alchemy, unicorns, and ancient witchcraft.

Both books will be published in October.

You can get it for $110 from Bloomsburry

EDIT:
I usually just wait a month after release and book depository has them for 40% off with free shipping.

That's where I was hoping to get it. If not, maybe Analecta Books will get some?

I have the illustrated and limited of both the first and second book. I really like them. I also have the proof previews of the 3 illustrated editions so far. I honestly think these are my favorite editions of the books so far.
