The Speedy Hen has stated that my book should have arrived by now and since it hasn't they are sending another one.

So no first printing and no second printing more than likely.

This whole process has been like a roller coaster where you go up and up and up, and just when you think it must be time get over the hump and start having fun you arrive at the departure platform.

At this point I guess I'll have to settle for enjoying the story. I hope I do.

The school market edition of SS is on ebay for 3 dlls. It usually sells for 50 dollars:

Still would like some feedback from someone who has read this.

Signed in pencil? (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Signed-JK-Rowling-Robert-Galbraith-Cuckoos-Calling-Hard-Cover-Book-/321184906298?pt=AU_Antiquarian_Collectable_Books&hash=item4ac81cbc3a)

No holo sticker(not sure if she started using those yet), and it's signed in pencil?
Call me very skeptical.

Hard to tell in that crappy photo, but the signature doesn't seem quite right. Then again, she hasn't signed it very much yet, so there will likely be some variation for a while.

Joe315
08-13-2013, 03:39 PM
I'm pretty sure that its fake for a couple reasons. No authentication, signed in pencil, low quality pictures, which to my eye look photoshopped hence the crappy quality. It also looks like the person behind her has a badge with the scholastic logo. They published Harry Potter in the US. When was the last time she did a signing where she signed only 4 books.

JK Rowling quote about authentication: “I was asked by the publisher to sign a few copies of The Cuckoo’s Calling as Robert Galbraith that were made available for sale around publication. While we can’t verify whether any particular book currently on eBay etc is genuine, any future books I sign in this way will be authenticated."

I found the original image.

I never did get my copy of A Cuckoo's Calling from Speedy Hen. They claimed to have shipped the same day I ordered, which would have meant a first printing. (As if) That first shipment went missing.

They tried again. Of course I knew that a first printing was out of the question at that point. The second shipment went missing as well.

They wanted to try again. I told them that unless it is at least a second printing then just refund my money. On Saturday they claimed to have shipped it.

Today I received an email that a refund has been issued.

Scenario: The guy in the office said, "Yeah, we can do that." While the guy in the warehouse said, "Not happening! We're shipping the 10th(?) printing!

Speedy Hen? Never again!

Strange. I ordered my copy from Speedy Hen on the 14th and got it (a second printing) fairly quickly with no problems. I was hoping against hope that it would be a first printing, but no such luck.

The seller responded. He's willing to issue a refund, but doesn't want to pay return shipping.

He says, ""first printing in North America: April 2013" appears on the title and publication pages in the front of the book that I sent to you. The numbers 2 through 10 appear because editions 2 through 10 had not yet been printed."

I can't believe the depth of ignorance involved.

So everyone who has a full numberline copy. That numberline includes the number 1 to let you know it has "not yet been printed."

I am responding to him explaining the way it actually works. I want to include a picture of the copyright page of a first printing. The only one I can find on tdt.org is out of focus. Can someone upload, or link me to, a good picture of the US edition copyright page of The Cuckoo's Calling?

I never really took a good look at the book. I saw it was a second edition and set it aside. Now I've looked at it. It isn't pretty. There is a corner ding, board ding, food(?) stain, crinkly (moisture?) pages, slight spine lean, crushed spine ends and general use and abuse.

Buyer Protection guarantees me the purchase price and shipping. I might have to eat the return shipping though. He isn't going to pay it unless eBay makes him.

This will be the first time I ever gave anyone negative feedback. I didn't even give brennan negative feedback and he sold me a forgery. He gave me a full refund and paid return shipping though.

Those are the UK deluxe editions. Chad just bought a set and I just picked up books 2, 4 & 5. Book 3 is very rare at only 7,000 1st printings and is by far, the most expensive.

I should be getting the rest of the books today or tomorrow and will post more pictures next week (I have a few days off). Half of mine were new in shrink wrap (I don't like my books to suffocate) so I unwrapped them and will get some pics up. Ditto what becca said about book 3. Book one gets a little pricey, but not as bad as #3 - which was actually the first book published in this format - they then went back to 1 and 2 and finished out the series.

Definitely an added bonus. The one that sold recently on Ebay did not have the slipcase. Although you can find the 4 book set with slipcase on ebay - but nowadays the only one in the set that would be a first edition is the goblet of fire. Although there is this one with a slipcase for all of the books:

Im not spending anymore on the set though

Smart, since most plastic wrap used by publishers is actually harmful over time since it's not archival.

I just got this from Hatchard's:

The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith

When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, she just thinks he has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home.

But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realises. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published it would ruin lives - so there are a lot of people who might want to silence him.

And when Quine is found brutally murdered in bizarre circumstances, it becomes a race against time to understand the motivation of a ruthless killer, a killer unlike any he has encountered before...

A compulsively readable crime novel with twists at every turn, The Silkworm is the second in the highly acclaimed series featuring Cormoran Strike and his determined young assistant Robin Ellacott.

Robert Galbraith is the pseudonym of J.K.Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series.

This new title will be published on the 19th of June and Hatchards is pleased to be able to offer our customers the chance to place a pre-order for the book at half-price - £10.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A SIGNED EDITION.

If you would like to place a pre-order for this book then please contact the Hardback Fiction Department on 020 7439 9921 or e-mail books@hatchards.co.uk.

We will require your credit/debit card number, expiry date and security code.

Should you wish to have the book sent to you then we will also need your delivery address.

I noticed a squib in today's Cleveland Plain Dealer that says:

J. K. Rowling has part one of a two-part story, “History of the Quidditch World Cup” on her Web site Pottermore.

Look for part two Friday, March 21. Rowling set up the website for fans of her “Harry Potter” books. A spokesman told the British newspaper The Independent that the first part of the Quidditch history is one of the most popular posts ever on the site.

I've searched the site to find this and couldn't. Does anyone have a link?

I am sure that y'all heard that there will be an official bibliography?
J.K. Rowling: A Bibliography, by Bloomsbury Academic... which will be sold $120 and will be written
>>> http://www.hypable.com/2014/04/04/jk-rowling-bibliography-bloomsbury/

“This is the definitive bibliography of the writings of J.K. Rowling. In addition to complete bibliographic details of all her books, pamphlets, original contributions to published works and broadcasts, there is detailed information on Rowling at auction, on significant reviews and on scholarly work on Rowling. This will be the first source on Rowling consulted by textual scholars, book collectors, auction houses, critics and researchers. The aim of the book is to record fact and dispel rumour on the fascinating publishing history of the Harry Potter series.”

Here is a message from the writer of : THE HARRY POTTER JOURNEY

Update about The Harry Potter Journey

It has been a few months since The Harry Potter Journey has been published. I hope you liked it and enjoyed.

The reviews I read were very positives. I'd like to know what do you think about the book.

I have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that I've been working in the next installments of The Harry Potter Journey. I've been talking with readers of the first edition, asking what they liked, about what they wanted to know more, and I am trying to include all the feedback in this new volume.

The bad news is a little more complicated. Although I already knew it a few weeks ago, Bloomsbury (the UK publishers) has announced recently they are going to publish "J.K. Rowling: A Bibliography".

In their own words, "This is the definitive bibliography of the writings of J. K. The aim of the book is to record fact and dispel rumour on the fascinating publishing history of the Harry Potter series."

I know they started to work on this early after they approve The Harry Potter Journey. It seems they wasn't happy with an unofficial Bibliography (even a unofficial bibliography they censured), and wanted to have their own material - where they will be able to tell what they think is appropriate.

Giving the circumstances, we are doubting in following with The Harry Potter Journey. We clearly can't compete with an official source, and more over: Bloomsbury right now sees us as competence.

However, we will wait until we read this new book by Philip Errington (the one who sold The Tales of Beedle the Bard manuscript at Sotheby's).

After that, we will made a decision and we will share it with you. We want to have your support on this. Please, feel free to reply to this email with your thoughts on this case.

Thank you again, for everything.

The first Strike it Lucky appeared:

It went to a girl from Twitter, who "rarely" was/is followed by the people from Goldsboro Books, the official Goldsboro Books and CrimeVault - but she only has a few followers, which means she isn't popular. If you look at her blog, she reviewed all the books that Goldsboro Books has been lately announced ... am I a bad person for thinking bad in this case?

They did offer copies to people they consider valued customers. My feeling is there will be more signed copies of Silkworm than Cuckoos Calling, of which there were a reported 200ish copies signed. I'd say around 250-300.

I think the Galbraith sig will be more sought after if she doesn't sign the Silkworm as the pseudonym. For all we know these will be the only cuckoos calling copies that get signed, which will keep the price high for a Rowling collector. Additionally she said that future signatures will have the Rowling certification sticker.

Yep! :excited: I was one of the customers that got an offer for one prior to the contest. Needless to say I was very surprised to get the email. Although I have been a Book of the Month Club member there since 2011 which probably helped. Whatever the reason, I am thrilled to be getting a copy.

Just received this email from Waterstones. Does anyone know how to find these bookstores ?

Hello,

It's just a week to go now until The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith is published and we hope you're as excited as we are! There are just a couple of things we'd like to mention to you about your online order though.

First off, if you want to guarantee that you receive the book on Thursday please check what postage option you chose at the time. We'll only guarantee the courier delivery options and "deliver to shop" for Thursday. We hope that first class delivery will arrive in time, but can't guarantee it, and free delivery probably won't get there in time. If you'd like to change your postage option please cancel and re-place your order.

As you've placed an order before 15th June you're in with a chance to win a signed copy of the book (signed by Robert Galbraith him/herself...). There aren't many of these available, so will you be one of the lucky few? If you are we'd love to hear from you via one of our social media channels.

Speaking of social media, if your local shop has a Twitter account keep an eye out on Thursday to see if it has been selected to have a small number of signed copies. If it is, simply present the Tweet to the bookseller at the till and see whether they have any left (first come first served you see). Unlike the pre-order lucky dip, the books in shops will be full price though.

If you have any questions about your order please fill in the information on our online form (or call 0808 118 8787) and one of our Customer Support Advisors will be back in touch.

We only had 8 signed First Editions of the Silkworm available. Each book will be accompanied by images of J K Rowling signing the books and a ticket / details from the one off worldwide signing. These are £3000 each including worldwide insured shipping. Only 3 are now available.

Yeah for sure - I just meant in terms of market value. I think two things should have happened.

1) she has a signing with a set amount to be signed
2) only one competition gets run for the signed copies

I'm starting to think the golden tickets were a little less rare than we were led to believe.

pmtarantino
06-19-2014, 06:15 AM
There is no way that price to be fair. For half price, you can get The Cuckoo's Calling 1st signed, which is much more rare than The Silkworm will be.

Given that a lot of bookstores in the UK had signed copies (almost every Waterstones store with twitter seemed to have copies), and that she will have a signing event, I will say that the price will be more closer to The Casual Vacancy (by the way, you can get signed copies by 200/300 pounds) than to The Cuckoo's Calling.

I really hope that the golden ticket are ommon because I didn't receive my Goldsboro orders yet...

EDIT:

Well, there are a few signed copies on Ebay.

This one is BUY IT NOW for 550 pounds, with Make Offer... so I guess I wasn't wrong :)

Yes they do take phone orders and they also ship to the US.

The Silkworm works out to £22.50 shipped to Florida. £10 for the book and £12.50 shipping.

The number is +44208 045 1001

Yes, but there are no difference with order online. The signed copies (if there are any left) are only to be purchased in store in person, one copy per customer.

Kingfan24
06-19-2014, 07:09 AM
There's no way they will be as common as casual vacancy. She had multiple events for the book. The waterstones only had one-five copies of the book IF they had any.

That being said, I am looking for one of those US copies now that I aalready have a guarenteed UK copy.

pmtarantino

I said it will be closer, not that will be at the same price. As you can see on eBay, it is definitely closer to The Casual Vacancy than to The Cuckoo's Calling. Also, the prices usually drop down after the hype.

All of the signed copies are over 1k on ebay except one. Casual vacancy is like 200-300 USD. I think these will stay around the 1k-2k ranges and there will be a premium is bundled with the first book signed.

I was able to enter the drawing. I don't know if they will let me win though.

I got mine Saturday. No signature.

It arrived, surprisingly undamaged, in a cardboard "box/sleeve" with no further protection.

That's the way mine was shipped also. Mine had some minor damage to the top back of the dust jacket, but I was going to use it as a reading copy anyway.

Actually the bottom front of the dustjacket is a little rumpled. It is still fine though not pristine. I have the US 1st and the UK 1st. I think I'll read the US edition.

For those Goldsboro Golden Ticket holders, they told me they would just use my CC on file and they would take care of it. I don't have to do anything else. I'm guessing that is what they are doing for all US customers that want theirs shipped.

Yep, that is what I was told as well. I am hoping it is here this week.

So here's a Potter story (sorry no collectibles):

My family and I spent 4th of July week at Universal Studios Florida. My 15 year old daughter is a huge Potter fan, and she hadn't had a chance to see the Hogsmeade park that opened in 2010. She was hoping that Diagon Alley was going to open by the 4th, but when they announced the grand opening would be on the 8th, 3 days after we left, she was heartbroken. So, we have a great week and she's having as much fun at the Hogsmeade side, while also looking through the closed gates of Diagon Alley with sadness in her eyes. On 4th of July, our last day, we're walking around and although Diagon Alley is still closed, Kings Cross Station was open. I asked what was going on, and they were having dress rehearsal for the Hogwarts Express train that connects the two parks. If you had a park-to-park ticket, you could ride it. Well, we did, so we rode the train to Hogwarts. She felt a little better after that. So we're waiting on line for lunch at The Three Broomsticks, when an employee tells us they just soft opened Diagon Alley. We raced out of the restaurant, got back on the train, and when we arrived at Diagon Alley, the gates were open. We spent 3 hours shopping - buying robes at Madame Malkin's, new wands at Olivander's, exchanged Muggle Money for Gringott's Bank Notes, candy at Weasley's Wizard Wheezies...it was crazy. The only thing we didn't get to do was the new ride, but everything else was open. When she saw the lines on opening day last Tuesday (7 hour wait to ride the ride and 3 hour wait just to get in to Diagon Alley), she realized just how lucky we were.

One thing the Ministry of Magic is good at...taking my money :-)
