Hello, question, Rose and I watch a lot of TV and movies. She's seen the original miniseries and we were excited about the new one (we'll binge it once they're all released) but I checked the parents guide and it says there's orgies in every Vegas scene, lol. Decapitations and blood and guts are fine for my eight year old, but I think I draw the line at orgies lol.

Are those scenes contained to one episode, are they easily fast forwardable, is there anything else to be on the lookout for, etc. Thanks.

Interesting that extremely violent deaths are OK for a child, but a few quick glimpses of sex scenes is verboten.

Says a lot about Americans odd take on sex.

Well, it's not "extremely violent" deaths that she's seeing, although when we saw Freaky, I definitely wasn't expecting that level of gore (which was awesome, by the way, lol). For example, we're about to start the fifth season of Walking Dead, and I have to consciously space it out so we don't get to the Negan head bashing episode (season 7 premiere) at least for a couple years. That was too brutal.

Changed my mind. Now I'm not so sure I ever want to meet, Rose. At least not unless its a very public place!!! God, Shannon what are you raising there? Mrs. Lecter? lol j/k

Lol Bill you're funny, I came back to post a follow up comment but it goes hand in hand with what you're saying (and I know you're just joking) but I am what I would consider to be an expert in movies. No one watches more movies and TV than me except for professional movie reviewers. That being said, when Rose was interested in the cartoon kiddy horror stuff (Scooby Doo, Bunnicula, etc), I gradually moved her to more and more adult stuff. Never any nightmares, no difficult time distinguishing from reality, etc. We watch a lot of behind the scenes stuff also. How they did that special effect and that makeup, etc. She likes it. The only stuff I'm not introducing her to are torture porn, abuse/rape storylines, and boring-ass movies about the Yankees.

We definitely have a lot of hangups when it comes to the subject. My wife watches a lot of foreign television and it just doesn't seem to be an issue there. We sure do love our violence here though. Our neighbors across the pond seem not to be as dependent on that.

See, you were doing great as a conscientious, diligent and considerate parent and then.....

"boring-ass movies about the Yankees".

You went and fucked it all up with that comment. With that kind of grossly negligent influence she'll be bound for the pole for sure!!! Staighten up, introduce her to the New York Yankees, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams and so on and she will grow up to be a fine, well rounded woman!!!

They’re mainly in the background of the Vegas scenes of the last two episodes (5 and 6).

My wife seems to think that reality shows like Southern Charm, MTVs The Challenge, Life After Lock Up, and the like, are acceptable to be on when our 3 and 5 year olds are in the room. IT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE!!

Yeah I think the miniseries handled things better at this point. This just felt rushed. Kind of surprising how the miniseries felt less condensed.

I did like Flagg dancing, though.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about the new series. There were few bright spots with casting, but by and large I think the Original cast was a much better ensemble cast. I really did not enjoy the new Tom Cullen, and I'm damn near outraged over Trashcan Man. He was full-bore maniac from the start with no back story, nor anything that he needs to atone to Flagg for. Whoopi didn't really bring any of her considerable talent for characters into her portrayal, so Mother Abigail was mostly a thin background character. Barely any story for Nick, and never felt why he specifically was the 'voice of Mother Abigail'. Lloyd was dumb as a box of rocks, certainly not showing any real capability for the behind the scenes running of Vegas. Harold had plenty of screen time, but I didn't get the feel of progression from love-lorn, immature boy to killer (a tool played by Flagg via Nadine). A decent final atonement, but too late in the game. I like that they change Larry's race, to avoid some of the cringe-worthy comparisons in the book that don't play well in 2021, but again, there wasn't enough progression in his back story.

Stu was competent, but they really shortchanged his escape from Stovington. I DID enjoy JK Simmons as The General in his short scene. I can't even recall what Fran looked like at this moment, though I still have to watch the final episode, which I suspect revolves around her. Now that I'm writing all of this out, I'm beginning to wonder what they did with DOUBLE the time of the original series. Hmm, I thought I fairly enjoyed my watch of this new season, but looking back now that I'm (mostly) finished, I'm having a far easier time remembering what was bad rather than what is improved over the original series.

Sorry for the rambling review, but I was just mentioning things as I remembered them.

PS. I'm sure you all noticed that Harold's rejection notice was from Cemetery Dance, and the Shining carpet showed up in the casino. Those are the biggest easter eggs that I caught in the series.

And hubby Ron, who hasn't read the book or remember the original series, was watching with me. He had tremendous difficulty following the story with the non-linear approach. I had to pause often to explain events/motivations/relationships to him.

I prefer the line from the book but I guess “I have come to teach you to be civilized” would have offended people.

Skarsgard definitely felt more like Flagg this episode.

TCCBodhi
02-11-2021, 09:46 PM
I agree with CyberGhostFace. All of a sudden Skargaard really took on how I picture Flagg. It's not enough to redeem the series, but I enjoyed this last episode: we got a little bit of the 'Original Book' ending, we got a bit of the 'Complete Book' ending, plus a few scenes that are not in the books, but completely in line with it all.

On episode 5. So far I've given it four 3/5s and one 2/5. It's not bad, but I feel like everyone is a background character except for Harold and slivers of Larry and Stu and Nadine.

Watching it by myself, marking down scenes to fast forward for Rose when she and Amber watch it.

So far I have:

e01: 9:51-9:56 (jerking off)
e02: 32:41-33:43 (sex scene)
e04: 23:30-25:20 (almost rape scene and repeated head bashing scene)
e05: 7:12-7:30 (Vegas orgy), 12:28-18:30 (almost threesome and more Vegas orgy), and 24:09-24:27 (unzipping pants, moaning)

Did a free month of Paramount + so that I could watch this. Overall I was just kinda blah about it. I think the biggest miss was that I had zero connection to any of the characters. I feel like they flash forwarded thru the whole first half of the book and just jumped to Boulder and Vegas. But that long journey is where we form an emotional attachment to the characters and see who they are. It's a shame because for the most part I enjoyed the casting and the production was good, but the link connecting it all together and to the viewers just wasn't there.

Brian861
03-10-2021, 01:17 PM
The zero connection describes it best for me also. I rewatched the miniseries a few days ago and it doesn't hold up well these days either. The acting is subpar but it is a more faithful adaption IMO. I guess the lightening in the bottle that was Shawshank and The Green Mile will never be captured again.

4K sound is superior to standard Blu-ray in both DTS & Atmos.. So it's 4K or UHD for me.
(but that's probably what you meant anyway.. I'm always behind on these threads)

Randall Flagg
03-10-2021, 05:40 PM
4K is the film's resolution and has nothing to do with sound, other that the fact that 4k films typically have Dolby Atmos/DTS, whereas many BluRays do not have the latest and greatest sound technology.
Either way, Bluray, or 4k Bluray have superior picture and uncompressed sound as compared to streaming.

Trying to compress a 1300 page story into a 10 hour series seemed to be a messy task from the jump. The Stand deserves to be adapted into a series with 3 seasons in order to tell the story in it's entirety. I'm not shocked by the mixed reviews

St. Troy
03-12-2021, 07:47 AM
10 hours would still be preferable to the 6 the original miniseries gave it (that miniseries takes lots of grief, but its main problems were special effects (which must be forgiven in a network TV miniseries) and short running time).

I'd like to see a 20-hour proper (meaning not shuffled as CBS just did) adaptation.

There's an interesting series on youtube that breaks down the The Stand movies that were never made. Part 1 is about Romero's, part 2 Ben Affleck's and part 3 Josh Boone's. The Ben Affleck version sounds like it would've been especially wild and crazy.

I don’t think it needed three seasons. The entire extended Lord of the Rings film trilogy is twelve hours. Twelve could have done The Stand justice.

People point to American Gods but that show has apparently become a mess that is barely following the book.

Heather19
03-14-2021, 08:49 AM
Multiple seasons would have been nice, and would probably be better so that they could fully flesh out the characters. But if limited to just one I think they could have also done it way better than what we got. I think they spent so much time on the end that they sacrificed building up the characters, so unless you're familiar with the work you don't really know them, and even then I had zero connection to any of them. That was the biggest thing missing for me.

Bumping an old thread but I'm just now finally getting around to watching this. Just finished Episode 6 last night. I agree with what a lot of other people have already said. The non-linear story-telling has made this very difficult to watch. And this is coming from someone that has read the book at least 3 times and watched the original mini-series more than once.

Often it takes me a few seconds to realize they did time jump. I can't imagine someone that's isn't familiar with the source material keeping up at all.
