You list the films you've watched throughout the year. Generally if we're listing a film we've seen before , we tag it with (rewatch).

Yes, it wasn't as good as Mariachi and Desperado, more of a bog standard action movie. I thought Depp was great in it too, and oddly looking like The Crow at the end.

lol, I don't state whether or not it's a rewatched unless I watch it twice in that year, which I denote with (2). All my movies this year have been rewatches. New Year which is good for re-visting old favourites.

Most of my 2010 list was winged from memory as I didn't see the thread until about August. I probably missed dozens of them. Be interesting to see how many I actually watch.

Considering we're only a week into January this is loads of movies for me, I wouldn't normally watch this many in a month. But, we just got the movie channels included in our sky (like cable) package, so Rob and I have watched a movie most evenings.

Mattrick
01-08-2011, 05:28 AM
lol I've watched five in 8 days and that feels like nothing to me. Some weeks I watch ten or more. Just a few weeks ago I watched almost Wes Anderson's entire filmography in a single day.

If you want a challenge, watch Lord of the Rings Extendeds in a day. Think it comes out to around 13 hours. I haven't done it all in one day but I was close. Disc one of Fellowship then slept, watched the rest, Two Towers and first disc of Return of the King then finished that off the next day. Hard to watch THAT much movie.

p.s. how do you get that '2010 list' to become a link. I feel I'm the only person here who doesn't know. I can't link it, but not make the words the link.

Darkthoughts

 I tend not to watch movies in the day (at weekends, I'm at work in the week) because if the kids are at their grandparents I feel like I ought to be doing something I couldn't do if I had the kids with me, so I usually end up going out and visiting friends (at the pub :D ), staying in watching a movie seems like I've wasted the free time some how. However, I had some really good recommendations last year off you guys and I'm more into movies than I have been for a long time.

Mattrick

I know what you mean. BEen hanging out with an old friend more who loves movies more than I do. We watch a couple movies a month. He's introducing me to more classics and I've been introducing him to the hidden gems of the 90's/2000's. I've got like 10 of his DVD's right now and I think they're all from the 70's...damn that was a good decade for films. It's fun to talk with and analyze movies with other people. Sometimes I help him see something from the movie he's missed and sometimes he helps me see the finer points. I definitely look for different things in film lately, more from a directing standpoint; arrangement of shots and set pieces and lighting and mood. One of the reasons I loved The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola) he got me to watch, so brilliantly directed.

But yeah, I'm alone 90% of the time and about 5% of the time I'm not alone I'm watching movies lol. I've got a stack of new (well, new old) movies to watch but have been watching movies I've seen several times each instead.

I don't want to get into it with you again, so don't take this the wrong way, but do you like any movies?

Maybe you're just really a hard grader, but it's kind of funny that out of all the films you listed above the highest grade is a 7, which is pretty average. I don't know about everybody else here, but I only subject myself to films I think I will like.

I can understand the low grades for the A-Team & Schmucks, but I'm kind of surprised by the low (shockingly low) grades for The Town and The Other Guys. The Town is considered one of the better films of the year by many and The Other Guys was probably one of the better comedies of the year.

Again, I'm not trying to start anything. Just curious.

Jean
01-17-2011, 01:55 PM
the highest is 8, not 7

I didn't notice it because I wanted to find fault with your argument, but only because it was a von Trier film, and I wanted to know Mike's opinion

by the way, I watch a lot of movies I do not expect to like, or fully expect not to - for all kinds of reasons

Jean are you not going to rate your horror films this year?
Yes, I definitely am. The only one I recommend so far is the second novel of the Unholy Women trilogy. It's delightfully disgusting and nauseatingly grotesque.

The Killer Inside Me 7/10
The Other Guys 3/10
The Last Exorcism 6/10
The Squid and The Whale (Noah Baumbach, 2005) 6/10
Dancer in the Dark (Lars von Trier, 2000) 8/10
The Town 5/10
The A-Team 3/10
Dinner for Schmucks 4/10

Just curious.I guess that I am a hard grader, yes. Or you could say that; to me, it's more like most people are WAY too generous. Certainly, there are many films that I'd put in the 9-10 range, but I haven't seen any new ones in the last couple of weeks. (Didn't list rewatches.) You'll notice that I gave none of these a 1 or 2, either, but I do come across movies sometimes that belong there. 5.5 is exactly average on a 10-point scale, and I try not to go wild with praise since experience has taught me that what seems great one moment often pales in just a couple of years.

I defintiely considered The Other Guys an epic fail. Totally incoherent. Not the worst I've ever seen, and it had some funny moments, but it's nowhere near being the movie that it appears to have tried to be

As for The Town, I guess I've just seen too many heist films. I respect the work that was done, the performances were quality, IMO, but I just thought the whole thing was overly formulaic. Slightly. It had good themes, but not pertinent and original ones, so far as I could tell. I'll grant that I might bump this one up a point or so at some time.

BTW, I think that, conversely from The Other Guys example, The A-Team was actually remarkably successful at what it was trying to do. Suspend judgment and it's pretty enjoyable.
Too bad that, really, what it was trying to do was so worthless. Additionally, I found its pretentious morals particularly crass.

I'd have to say that I do rather dislike the movie industry taken as a whole, at least as it stands presently. I hope you can still appreciate my input, anyway. No harm meant.

Of course I appreciate your input. Even though we disagree on a few movies, I always respect everybody's opinions. If we all like the same movies, it would get pretty boring to talk about film. Some of my favorite movie discussions with family and friends are about films we disagree on.

I am also not very happy with the state of the film industry. We just have to hope that they can turn it around at some point.

well, I am not sure it is such a must, since it doesn't really hold a candle to The Innocents; but certainly beats the shit out of that other version we've discussed. Hagane, on the other hand, is definitely a must, although I am not sure I really recommend it.

Path, you didn't explain that 6 you gave Squid and The Whale, which I simply loved.I thought I did. You seem to think that a 6 is near the bottom. A very great ratio of the grades you give are 10s or near 10. (Though I don't mean to dis the classics you've been watching lately.) I think it was good, but there's really not much to it, is there? I believe I picked up everything in that film on my first viewing. Anyway, thumbs up to the acting.

oooo Moon, an under the radar favourite. You like it? Actors that can carry a movie, literally by themselves, makes me appreciate them so much more. This is what I felt Buried did for Ryan Reynolds and to a lesser extent, Tom Hanks for Cast Away.

I'll have to check out Buried, I don't know that one.

Yes, Moon was amazing. I literally sat there after it had finished going, "Wow. That was brilliant." To myself, but that's ok, no one saw me :D I totally agree, given that Sam Rockwell pretty much starred in it alone, the performance was flawless. I haven't been in the rate the movie thread because I think it's hard to say much about the film without giving anything away, but I'd definately give it a 10.

Mattrick

Moon, much like Buried, was limited release. All the movies I really want to see in theatres are limited release and it sucks. Twilight gets into like a bajillion screens yet original, quality movies like Moon and Buried get, well, buried in the box office department. I hate waiting an extra four months or so for the DVD

Because it has been a great year. I still have to watch some of the smaller films nominated for oscars this years like Buitiful, Blue Valentine and Another Year. There is canadian animated film I want to see called My Dog Tulip, which sounds simply sublime. I think it's been the greatest year in film in sometime.

That's one i've wanted to see but haven't yet. What were your thoughts in it Thoughts?

Darkthoughts
02-10-2011, 01:44 AM
Well, it was actually a movie I had purposely avoided, assuming I wouldn't like it. But, being as the rule in our house is "whoever grabs the remote first gets to choose the channel", Rob got the remote and put it on last night so i watched it.

I really liked it. I'm not a big fan of "American Pie" style humour, and that's what I mistakenly thought it would be - it wasn't. Kinda like with Superbad. The lead guy was very likeable and gave a great, realistic performance, Mila Kunis...I think i have a girl crush on her at the moment because I just love her in everything! It wasn't the best comedy I've ever seen, but it was very good and did make me laugh out loud in quite a few places. Not overly predictable and cheesy as romcoms usually are.

pathoftheturtle
02-10-2011, 04:02 AM
I wasn't interested, either, but maybe I'll try it now. Still definitely never want to see The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It.

"American Pie"

"American Pie" ... Mila Kunis...I think i have a girl crush on her at the moment because I just love her in everything! ... Have you seen Extract?

Nothing really.
It's a Mike Judge movie. About the everyday, basically.
Mostly lowbrow comedy.
Mila Kunis plays a swindler.

Jean what did you think of the horror Changeling? Just ok? I've been meaning to watch it. it is nice, somewhat classy, old-fashioned, it has its moments, and one scene is very, very good. Otherwise, it is rather boring - they relied on "atmosphere" mostly, and couldn't really get it across. I totally recommend it, though, for its doubtless historical value.

Not sure why you thought the end was bad. Maybe a little impotent in stirring emotion, but passable thematically.
I think it was above average, on the whole. Not any kind of masterpiece, but at least it's not completely typical.

you know love... I didn't say I recommended that you watch it. I know a certain type of films impresses - and depresses - you too deep. At last make sure that you have something nice, sweet and soothing to work as an antidote, like a book by Wodehouse, or some classic comedy movie, maybe a musical, whatever.

Heather, I watched Blue Valentine to get ready for oscars. It was an OK movie. It is like a fairy tale telling about what happens after the prince and princess start to live together. That is why it is different from the other examples of the same genre. Oh, and, the acting is real good.

Have you seen Revolutionary Road, is it in a similar vein to that? I think it just left theaters here so I might have to wait a little bit to watch it. But it looked really good and I've been dying to see it.

I saw Revolutionary Road which is far better than this movie, in my humble opinion. I am not saying this because of the actors, it is about the storyline. Blue Valentine has a more static structure. I still think you like it.
