Book Anthologys --- Why always undervalued ??? PLEASE post some pics !!!

I´am a big Anthology fan, it´s always a big surprise to meet an before unknown Author who published a story in a anthology.

Sometimes an Anthology only presents one or two ´big´ authors, the rest is unknown, think therefore the reputation of anthologys is not so high...
But... sig lim anthologys are a really ´cheap´ alternative to become a lot of
signatures for a low price.

For me, as an not US resident, it´s not so easy to know all anthologys
published in english, now i start to post pics from some of my anthos.
When more anthologys get postet, hope it helps...

My first pics... Think anybody knows it:

Quietly Now lim 500/200 signed by 30 inkl. Stephen King, Peter Straub, K P Burke, Kim Newman

I would relate anthologies to signed baseballs. If you have a baseball with one superstar on it, it is a desirable piece. But if you have a team signed baseball with the superstar and 20 other guys on the ball, it never reaches the same value. But you are right, it is a less expensive way to get a SK signature. I have 5 s/l anthology books and happy with all of them.

Not sure about that analogy. I've got a baseball signed by Mickey Mantle. I would definitely trade it for a baseball signed by the 1961 NY Yankees team. I think the value is probably 20:1 in favor of the team signed baseball. I'm not an expert on sports memorabilia though.

I'd never put any of the old time Yankees in that category. Those teams were filled with HOF's and superstars, and those balls are worth a lot of cash. I was talking more modern stars like Albert Pujols. A signed ball with him alone is worth more than a Cardinals team ball with his signature on it.

Interesting. I never would have thought that but it sort of makes sense.

Hmmm....don't agree with that. Mickey Mantle and Ed Kranepool might be an odd fit, but a signature's a signature.

As for the books, I think most fans look for the recognizable titles by the author - so "Full Dark" makes sense...tell someone "Prime Evil" and they don't know what book you're talking about. Plus, with so many limteds of actual SK books, the market just isn't the same for the lesser-known anthologies. You have to be a real serious collector to start going after those, and it's a small number.

Everyone's certainly got their opinion on this. As someone who spent every day going to Spring Training for years growing up in Florida, from my experience, modern teams balls don't come close to the value of a single ball signed by a superstar. A world Series team signed ball is different of course, and vintage team balls are always at a premium, but if the league MVP was on the last place team, I'd much rather have a single signed ball than a team one. Here a quote from Leila Dunbar, who used to work at Sotheby's and has appeared on Antiques Roadshow:

"...the ball with a single star player's signature is usually more highly valued than the ball that has several."

Yeah, I guess even if I don't exactly agree with it, I can see the point (and I totally forgot how my brother used to laugh at his Red Sox program signed by Carl Yastremzki - but then "ruined" because he got Rich Gedman to sign it too)....although I don't think it applies to books.

I just don't see a book collector saying "What? Brian Freeman signed this too? Well, screw it, the King signature is worthless then!" But I can see a collector saying "meh, another anthology...I'll pass, signed or not."

I complete agree that I don't think the principle applies with books. If I can pick up a signed anthology with SK in it at a good price, I don't concern myself with what other authors are included. I'd add it to my shelves in a heartbeat.

I guess I'm one of those serious collectors that loves King S/L anthologies. And right now the prices keep dropping and dropping. A copy of Night Visions V recently sold for $99, and many of the others go for less than $200 on the secondary market. I just picked up a copy of Transgressions for $285. One of my goals is to collect all of King's S/L numbered anthologies. Not sure if I'll ever get there...

I collect them if they are signed by King.

I only have one S/L anthology but that is something that will eventually change. As far as a single VS. multiple sigs my theory is more the merrier. Especially if other authors are the ones I like. Dark Visions V for example is IMO a GREAT value. 3 big names, sig. sheet and (crappy) slipcase (but slipcase nonetheless).

And mine with original sketch of cover art by Jill Bauman. I love to find the differences between the sketch and the final cover.

SUPERBEAUTIFUL !!!
I remember when this drawing and another one were offered at ebay.
Wanted to buy it, but the postage to Germany was super high.

Thanks for not bidding. I bought it for a reasonable price.

I love the Vinny Chong too.

DARK AT HEART is one of a number of Dark Harvest anthologies that were just terrific. I have them all in S/L format, and wouldn't dream of parting with any of them.

Do you have a picture of them all somewhere?

Sorry, Paul, this is about five years late, but I just now see your question. Yes, I have all my signed/limited anthologies in these two bookcases, which for me makes for a very pleasing grouping. Here’s a photo of the two:

EDIT: DARK AT HEART, along with RAZORED SADDLES, SILVER SCREAM, OBSESSIONS, and all the other Dark Harvest anthos are in the second bookcase, middle shelf (some may be hidden by the wood edge framing).

Could you purchase this with the sigs, Frank? Or did you send it around to get the individuals to sign?

Fortunately, I was able to buy it with all the signatures.
It comes from Forbiddenplanet
