Speaking of Frisell...
YouTube - Bill Frisell~Master's Of War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwFKsAxB3kQ)
In case anybody cares, the bass player is Victor Krauss (Alison Krauss' older brother) and the drummer is Matt Chamberlain (whose name Heather may know from his extensive work as Tori Amos' touring drummer, among about a billion other projects for the man sometimes known as "the human drum machine")
Thanks Jayson, I'm going to give this a listen later.

Marc Ribot's Spiritual Unity
Live Nov. 6, 2006 @ Barcelona, Spain
This is one of my favorites of Marc's many bands and the first live show I've ever gotten my hands on of theirs. This band was put together to celebrate the music and the free improvisational approach of the great Albert Ayler (and features Henry Grimes on bass who actually played on several of Ayler's recordings).

Glad you enjoyed it SJ. There are many derivations of the Masada band, but the Bar Kokhba variation is probably the most exciting to me. They're amazing on record, but live they take it way beyond anything I've ever heard.
The band is...
Mark Feldman - violin
Erik Friedlander - cello
Greg Cohen - bass
Marc Ribot - guitar
Joey Baron - drums
Cyro Baptista - percussion
John Zorn - conductor/composer
I have an entire show of theirs on DVD (from 1999) which also has a set from the Masada String Trio which is Feldman, Friedlander and Cohen. A friend of mine is getting me the show from 2007 that the video I posted is from.

Marc Ribot on playing Arsenio Rodriguez' "Como Se Goza En El Barrio" in Warsaw...
Ribot: It’s strange how much the lyrics influence me, even though I do that number instrumentally, because I had found my own reading. How we enjoy ourselves in the ghetto is a title I can really relate to... When I use that title, it means something totally different than what Arsenio would have meant. I’m talking about a different ghetto in a different time and place: an East Village ghetto, a Warsaw ghetto—and how we enjoy ourselves can mean a lot of different things too. That allows me to live in the tune, find my own reading.

It is, but if we go, we likely won't be taking her. It's a later show than we thought and it's the night before her birthday party. It's one thing if we're tired the next day, another if she is. I still want to see the show though. They're the second best Zappa tribute band I've seen but comparing anyone to Zappa Plays Zappa isn't all that fair. Dweezil's band is amazing and I saw them with Steve Vai and Terry Bozzio. Still Bogus Pomp can play the hell out of Zappa's tunes and not many bands can do that.
By the way, I'm glad we're discussing Zorn and Zappa this early in the morning. It promises to be a good day musically. :couple:

John Zorn's Electric Masada
Live - Oct.2003 Nancy, France
I have this show on dvd and watch it quite a bit. This incarnation of Masada reminds me in many ways of Miles' 73-74 bands with Marc Ribot in the Sonny Sharrock role, one he fills quite well. The whole aesthetic has a very Miles feel to it though based entirely on Zorn's unique melodic sensibilities.

I thought you might. I've used it for some as an intro to Marc Ribot. You get many glimpses of his tone and skill sets but in an easy to process package of songs that cover familiar styles. With the exception of the song "Postizos" all of the material on that album are the compositions of Cuban composer Arsenio Rodriguez.

The light show is beyond description, and really even beyond the abilities of a camera to pick up. Chris Kuroda, the lighting director, is an essential part of that band's presentation of it's music, his instrument just doesn't make any noise. He lights every room differently, and he improvises as much as the band does.
