Marc playing classical compositions is an interesting change of pace from the other projects he does. These are all pieces by Haitian composer Frantz Casseus who was Marc'c guitar teacher (and neighbor) when he was a teenager. It's a beautiful album and one of my favorite things to listen to when I read.

Needed to hear a great version of "Divided Sky" to erase from my mind the horrible version I just heard from the Hampton show from the other night. They sounded like a band that hasn't played together in 5 years, only validating my thoughts that they should have stayed broken up. Oh well, at least I have my memories (and my cd's).
Heather19
03-08-2009, 04:22 PM
was that Hampton show their first one back together?
jayson
03-08-2009, 04:30 PM
Yep. They are starting out with three shows at Hampton, ending tonight I believe. I've been called overly critical (surprise surprise) but it's the second worst "Divided Sky" I've ever heard and I've heard upwards of 75% of the versions they've ever played (I collect shows with that song in the setlist). They sound like they did for most of 2003/2004, which is to say, like they don't rehearse or really care anymore. I have friends who are there who are saying it's awesome but I downloaded the show and I have ears. It ain't awesome. This Gorge show, now that's awesome. :D
Heather19
03-08-2009, 04:53 PM
Well that's a shame. You would think they would have rehearsed quite a bit before returning. At least you've got some older great shows that you can always listen to.
And I'm sure by your friends being present at the show that that is the reason they're saying it's good. If it was a good atmosphere, with lots of energy, it'll definitely influence their view.

If I'd not have heard 2003/2004 shows I might have expected it. Those shows were the reason I had little to no interest in them getting back together this time around.
And I'm sure by your friends being present at the show that that is the reason they're saying it's good. If it was a good atmosphere, with lots of energy, it'll definitely influence their view.
That's definitely it. I've always wished people could distinguish between "I had a good time at the show" and "it was a good show musically." I've seen some crappy shows at which I had a good time but I wouldn't listen to them again. That's why people think I'm overly critical but I'm not about to apologize for having standards.

Today is the 79th birthday of one of those at the very top of my list of musical heroes, Mr. Ornette Coleman. Ornette is among the founding fathers of the "free jazz" or "new music" movement begun in the 1950's and 60's. His own music is very special to me and his influence is heard in many many other musicians whom I love. Happy 79th Ornette!!!!

Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation by the Ornette Coleman Double Quartet
1961, Atlantic
http://jazzymas.com/oscommerce/images/coleman.ornette.0081227360924.jpg
One of my favorite pieces of experimental music. Ornette and his colleagues were definitely pushing the envelope on what music could and should be, especially for a major label release in 1961. The album features two separate quartets playing simultaneously, one recorded on the left channel, one on the right. At the time it was the longest improvised piece on record and it set the stage for a lot of artists to pursue similar experiments in improvisation (particularly Coltrane's Ascension album).

Some of them, like Ornette's yesterday or Beatle birthdays I just know from observing them year after year. For most others I just check Wikipedia in the morning to see if that particular day is the birthday of someone interesting. There are also a couple of famous birthday's listed on every day of the Futurama calendar so some I get from there.

One of the best collections of Beatles covers out there. The Beatles, particularly John, were big fans of the Stax artists so it is very cool to hear the Stax signature band interpreting the Abbey Road material in their instrumental soul/funk style. I am extremely picky when it comes to the Beatles covers, but this album is awesome.

Seriously though, a large percentage of Beatles' covers annoy the hell out of me but that album is one of the exceptions. It follows my rule of how to make a good Beatles cover which is to not try to sound like the Beatles and present your own interpretation of the song. It helps that Steve Cropper is one of my favorite guitar player so to hear him play some of George's lines is just too sweet.

Legendary Texas bluesman Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins was born on this date in 1912. Hopkins is among my favorite blues players and a huge influence on future players like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray and Jimmy Vaughan, and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan who performed many of Hopkins' songs in the early days of the Grateful Dead.

Today is the birthday of Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone).
Sly and the Family were the epitome of a tight band that could play anything. Funk, jazz, rock, soul, etc. Along with Hendrix, Sly Stone was a strong influence on Miles' electric explorations of the late 60's and early 70's.

Frisell is a guest on this one, a great album by composer/trumpeter Dave Douglas. Douglas is a core member of several incarnations of John Zorn's Masada bands and the bands he puts together for his own albums are equally high caliber (particularly Uri Caine playing the Fender Rhodes on this one). Douglas, Frisell and Caine make a formidable grouping.

Well the first thing is that there are two blues artists who went by the name Sonny Boy Williamson. The one who wrote "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" is was John Lee Curtis Williamson. His stuff is somewhat hard to find. The second more well known Sonny Boy Williamson was Aleck "Rice" Miller. His influence on American blues is tremendous. I made sure I got one with his original version of "One Way Out" which the Allman Brothers covered many many times.
ETA: Good call on Skip James! His early recordings from the 30's you can get complete in one set. Excellent stuff. Material from his rediscovery (30 years later) is scattered across a lot of unofficial compilations. I lack the requisite treasure map to find all the good stuff but it's out there.
