Good morning Pam. I'd say I slept late this morning but it's not entirely accurate since I was up from 3:30 to 6:00 with a killer headache, so while I did sleep until 9:15, it was only since 6:15. Anyway, I am here now and compiling a playlist for the morning as today is another musical birthday of one of my biggest musical heroes. Music shortly... stay tuned. :D

Good song Pam. I do wish Lou would have recorded a full version of it with the VU. On the expanded anniversary edition of Loaded (the final VU album with Lou), there was a demo version of it which was a straight-ahead rock song and it would have worked perfectly. I listen to that version more than the "official" version on Transformer (which is the one on that soundtrack as well). I also have a couple of good live versions, but the live Lou is later today.

This was (to date) the last of the legendary Halloween performances during which Phish dedicated their second set to a "musical costume" for which they performed another band's album in its entirety. In 1994 they did The Beatles' self-titled 1968 album (aka 'The White Album'), in 1995 it was The Who's Quadrophenia, in 1996 it was Talking Heads' Remain In Light, and in 1998 it was The Velvet Underground's Loaded. Although it was the final Halloween costume set, it was not the last album covered. Two days after the 98 Halloween show, they snuck the entirety Dark Side of the Moon into the second set of a show in Utah.

That's awesome! I never knew they did anything like that. I'm gonna have to go look up that Beatles one. It sounds interesting.

The whole concept is something that set them apart from every other band touring at that point. What is mind blowing about those shows is the length. Each Halloween show was three sets, a regular first set, the second set 'musical costume', and then a third set and encore. The 1994 show consisting of a double album made for one of the longest shows they ever did (not counting NYE1999-2000 when they played for 8 hours straight). It takes a pretty adventurous band to attempt something like this, and while not every song sounds great, most of them do and most of them were never played live by the Beatles or anyone else so it's nice to hear them played in that setting. I've had the 94 show on videotape forever (since 1995) and I can't even count how many times I've seen it. Even without the Halloween set, it's one of the best shows of 94 (which was a pretty good year for Phish shows). As good as it was though, it was the 96 show which changed everything. Six months of rehearsing the Talking Heads opened Phish up to a whole new approach to playing and was directly responsible for the megafunk sound of 1997, the single best year of Phish shows ever.

I'm enjoying it so far. I only got thru disc 1, which I think is about half of the first set. I've got the rest converting now. That way I can listen to whole thing tomorrow while I'm working.

I can't believe they played shows that are this long, or longer!
A quick question about the halloween shows, did the audience know going in what album they were going to play or was it always a surprise?

I can't believe they played shows that are this long, or longer!
Halloween shows and New Year's shows were always the longest because there was always that extra set. Even so, the "regular Phish shows" were two long sets and an encore which is much more than you get out of most bands, and the ticket prices were always super low so they gave a lot of bang for one's buck. That said, even I couldn't believe they went 8 hours NYE1999/2000. That was the longest night ever and worth every second.

A quick question about the halloween shows, did the audience know going in what album they were going to play or was it always a surprise?

Depends on the year. That first time in 94, no. They announced they would do a musical costume and even had a fan vote. The White Album actually came in second to Zappa's Joe's Garage (which would have been phenomenal) but they chose to do the White Album. Actually, when you get to the second set you'll hear that they tried a quick fake out by starting the sound effects for Dark Side of the Moon before they started the Beatles songs. In 95, I don't know remember if they announced what album it would be. In 96 they made up Playbills (like for Broadway shows) that were handed out before the show with the cover of Remain in Light on it so people knew what was coming. In 98 I don't think they announced it before hand and my brother was there and had no idea what album was coming. Phish does love their little surprises.

Quite a party as it was the NYE going into 2000, and I was there all right. I sat through 17 hours of traffic, but I was there. I just think it's funny that it took me almost as long to drive to that one (which was less than 4 hours away) as it did to drive to the NYE show the year before which was in NYC. Even the traffic was fun though. With a traffic jam that big, it became a huge party because everyone was going to the same place.

I can't imagine sitting in traffic for that long. At least you guys made the most of it, and had a fun time at the concert. You didn't end up missing any of it because of that did you? I always try to give myself extra time when going to concerts because you never know if you're going to get stuck in traffic, but I don't think I'd ever think to give myself that much time.

I'll let you know what I think of the rest of the show when I finish listening to it.

Nope, didn't miss a thing. The whole weekend was a self-contained festival with camping and they opened it the day before the music started because they knew how many people were coming (85,000). We left at noon and got to our campsite around 4 in the morning. The music started the next day.

Not that I don't love her classic early work for Chess Records, but for me, it's the records she made during these late 1960's sessions that are the true gems of the Etta James catalog. Playing with musicians like the funk/soul gods at Muscle Shoals brought out everything Etta had to offer. Her version of "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" shows exactly why I prefer her voice to Aretha Franklin's and until I heard her version of "Security" I never thought I'd hear someone sing an Otis Redding song better than Otis, but she did it.

And you know my response... you own a real guitar, learn to play some Beatles' songs. It's about a billion times more rewarding than playing a video game. It actually came up last night when one of our friends came over. She is a big fan of that game (and always begs me to play with her and her husband) and asked if I would finally play when the Beatles version comes out. I happened to have a guitar in my hand when she asked so I said, "why would I want to play a Beatles video game when I can do this?" and then proceeded to play "She Said, She Said".

Right now I can't. The instruments are mostly at the house it looks like we will be moving into. There the instruments will have their own room permanently and since the house is three or four times bigger by my guess there will be LOTS of room for more books too.

My roommate has five or six guitars...both acoustic and electric, a drum kit, a few basses, violin, and a bunch of unusual instruments such as the theremin and digeridoo. Also there is a piano and a bunch of small percussion instruments. He plays all of these amazingly well. That day I was playing drums and he was playing with feedback on the guitars/basses. It's still not so long ago that I don't remember what that's like. The first three or four weeks all I did was work on playing chords. The first two weeks it sounded like I was killing the guitar. After three weeks they sounded more like chords. It's all muscle memory. Do it over and over and over again and the dumbest fingers will figure out what they're doing eventually.

And hey, if your fingers are too stupid to form chords, there are always open tunings where all you have to do is bar all the strings in any fret with one finger to make a full chord. :D

...and now you are speaking japanese to me  ...what do you mean by bar the fret?

jayson
03-06-2009, 08:31 AM
It's when you use your index finger to press down on all the strings on a single fret. With an open tuning, instead of needing to use different fingers on different notes in different frets in order to make a chord all the notes you need are in a single fret and thus you only need one finger. These tunings are used a lot to play slide, but they have many other uses as well (like playing Floyd's "Fearless" correctly).
