Check out that show. It was excellent. It's up on the live music archive. I haven't listened to tons of live stuff by them, but I was very impressed by it. And if you do let me know what you think of it.

I will and I will. :)

They were a bluegrass band which goes back to the early 70's. Bela joined in 1981. What set them apart from a lot of bands was that everyone in the band played multiple instruments so they would often (individually) switch instruments on stage in the middle of a song until all of them were playing something different than when they started but the music kept going. They were also all top caliber players (like Bela). They broke up when Bela decided to pursue his interests in jazz and other forms of music and formed the Flecktones.

They are bluegrass, but there is also a lot of what Bela evolved into later. If you like bluegrass, they are definitely worth checking out. Even if you don't, you never know. At one point, I never thought I'd like bluegrass and then I heard Bill Monroe and it all changed.

THe White Album is way better than Rubber Soul

In some ways yes, in some ways no.

By the time of the The Beatles (aka the White Album) they were more like four individual musicians acting as each others session players than they were a cohesive band. Rubber Soul continues the move into more experimental music which was signaled by the end of Revolver, but they were still functioning as a band and things were a bit more collaborative. For that reason Rubber Soul flows together much more smoothly as a full album where The Beatles is a bit clunkier as it represents the work of four people who were beginning to go their separate ways. It's not say I don't love the White Album, I do, but it works for me as a collection from which to pull the songs I love, not an album to listen to from top to bottom. It also has "Birthday" which is the biggest piece of crap song in the entire catalog.

Me too. :) The Black keys are awesome. Attack And release is such a good album.

They are and it is a great album. I was super excited about it first because it was new material from them, but also because it features my favorite guitar player (Marc Ribot) on two tracks ("Lies" and "So He Won't Break"). The prospect of Ribot and Dan Auerbach together was almost too good to be true, and then they really delivered on the promise as those are two of the best tracks on a pretty solid album.

I've also recently started to get a hold of a lot of live BK stuff. As good as they are in a studio, they are ridiculously good in a live setting.

Definitely in the top 10 favorites of my entire music collection. Sessions from Charlie Parker's mid to late 1950's band which featured Miles on trumpet. As fantastic as Miles later work with Coltrane and then Wayne Shorter was, the trumpet/sax combo of Miles and Bird is as good as it gets for me. It doesn't hurt that many of the songs also feature the great Bud Powell on piano.

Why people continue to think it's funny to yell "Freebird" at any concert boggles the mind. It was never really all that funny and it gets less and less funny as time goes on. Personally, I never understood yelling out songs for the band to play whether seriously or in jest. If it were me on the stage, it would only make it that much less likely I'd play whatever song they yelled for.

This is a quote of what Issac Brock (lead singer of modest mouse) says to a fan who yells Play Freebird! (its on the live album baron von-bullshit rides again)

"I know I've said this before; the odds of us actually playing Free Bird are...there ARE no odds. It is not going to happen. I'll start with the first reason: we have NO idea how to play Free Bird. The second reason is: in the lovebug's natural habitat, hearing that would just fucking kill them, wouldn't it? You wouldn't want that, right? He's adorable. He is cute. Thirdly: Even if some, like, pick your deity, whoever, came down from the heavens or the hills or wherever your deity lives, and just blessed us with this vast knowledge of Free Bird and things, and we could play it backwards, sing backwards, we could do all that crazy shit, we still just wouldn't do it. If this were the Make-a-Wish Foundation and you were gonna die in 20 minutes, just long enough to play Free Bird, we still wouldn't play it. And here's the end reason, the end reason is that life is just too fucking short to play or hear Free Bird. ”

They did it a capella, but not only did they sing it that way, they actually each made the vocal noises their respective instruments would make. Hearing Trey literally "deedle-dee-deedle-dee-dee" through the solo was hilarious and very rewarding for someone like me who hates that song.

It went a little too polished and poppy for a little while, but his final album sounded great, so he finished in good style. I do love a lot of Lennon's solo stuff too though, especially some of the stuff on Imagine with George on guitar. Those two seemed easily able to still work together, especially if it was making fun of Paul in a song like "How Do You Sleep?"

Superb! That album is fantastic. Aside from the two obvious reasons why, the band for those sessions also had the great Art Blakey on drums and as if Trane weren't enough, there's a second tenor sax player, Coleman Hawkins. If ever forced to make a top 10 jazz albums (a difficult proposition for me) that one would be on the list without hesitation.

I can't help myself. That live album was almost never to be as nobody seemed to realize the concert had been recorded. I'm glad it came to Blue Note's attention because I had been looking for a good live recording of that quartet for a very long time. I have plenty of Trane with Miles (both before and after the stuff with Monk) and almost all of Trane's post-Miles stuff, but something live from Trane & Monk was a gift from the vaults. If you like the studio album you have, you should really enjoy the live one.
