It can be extremely frustrating, but I try not to let it get to me too much because stress only decreases the chances of falling back to sleep. I've been like this since I was a kid so I've gotten better at accepting that it's just the way it is. The plus side is that I get more time to read. :)

Compiled from a series of live recordings in 1969. The recordings were made by Robert Quine, then just a fan of the VU, who went on to be a highly influential guitarist who played with Richard Hell and the Voidoids and went on to play with Lou Reed in some of his post-VU projects. Of all the live VU stuff I have, this is the one I listen to the most.

Ben Kweller - The Ergs!

I wish I were Ben Kweller
Cause he writes those cool tunes
And he uses those cool minor chords
And you love the way he croons
You love the way he plays guitar and the way he blows his harp
If I were Ben Kweller I know I could win your heart

I wish I were Ben Kweller
Then I could be with you
Cause he knows Juliana, girl And Evan Dando too
He used to be in Radish Your favorite alternative band
If I were Ben Kweller I know I could hold your hand

I'd sit outside your window
And sing the song that goes Sha Sha, Sha Doo
Cause I wanna be with you

I wish I were Ben Kweller
Cause he writes those cool tunes
And he uses those cool minor chords
And you love the way he croons
He used to be in Radish Your favorite sugar-metal band
If I were Ben Kweller I know I could hold your hand

A top to bottom cover of the 1964 album Meet the Beatles. I typically prefer my Beatles covers to be completely different than the originals, but as far as straight-forward covers go, these are pretty enjoyable. Perhaps I'm a bit biased because a few years ago we sat next Pat DiNizio, of The Smithereens, on a plane. He was the coolest guy and a source of all kinds of great stories.

Bela is the man. When we saw him at the Tampa Theatre I was wearing one of many Beatles shirts I have. We were in the second row from the stage right in front of Bela. During one of his solos he threw in a few bars of "Michelle" and nodded to me then went back to whatever he was playing. The guy is just too cool.

Keeping with the theme of Beatles covers, here is one of my absolute favorites.

NP:

Please Please Me - Link Wray

Link is one of those players whose influence is astounding. Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Pete Townshend and Bob Dylan all cite Link as a major influence on their music. Townshend went so far as to say if it weren't for hearing Wray's "Rumble" he'd probably never have picked up a guitar. "Rumble" was the among the first (if not the first) song to use power chords, so there are a multitude of punk musicians who owe everything to Link.

But don't take my word for it, listen for yourself. You can hear so much of what came afterwards in the way he plays...

I've heard this song in many incarnations as Bill is fond of re-interpreting his own work with many different band line-ups. This line-up with the horn section works particularly well. It also helps to have Matt Chamberlain on drums (there's a reason people who've played with him call him "the human loop machine").

Stack-o-Lee???

The whole Stagger Lee/Stack-o-Lee mythos grew out of the real life murder of Billy Lyons by Lee Shelton in 1895 in St. Louis. The murder became immortalized in song and like many traditional songs, the legend grew and many artists have done their own versions and have reformulated the story in doing so. There are dozens and dozens of versions of the tale in song, by everyone from Dylan to Duke Ellington to Neil Diamond. I'm always adding to my collection of them. It makes a fun playlist to hear a bunch of them together.

I never knew it was based on a true murder at all.

I grew up only knowing the Lloyd Price version, which was a big hit and played all the time on the oldies station my dad used to listen to in the car. As a teenager I got into the Clash and when I heard "Wrong 'Em Boyo" it occurred to me that the story was one I'd heard before. Then I got into the Dead and I started to realize Stagger Lee's story was turning up everywhere. Thanks to the later development of the internet I've been able to hunt down as many versions as I could find.

Mr. stagger lee
Barkeep said, yeah, I've heard your name down the way
And I kick motherfucking asses like you every day
Mr Stagger Lee
Well those were the last words that the barkeep said
'cause stag put four holes in his motherfucking head
Just then in came a broad called nellie brown
Was known to make more money than any bitch in town
She struts across the bar, hitching up her skirt
Over to stagger lee, she starts to flirt
With stagger lee
She saw the barkeep, said, o god, he can't be
Dead!
Stag said, well, just count the holes in the
Motherfucker's head

One of my absolute favorites of Miles 70's offerings. The twin guitar attack of Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas create a wall of sound that goes far beyond descriptors like 'jazz' or 'rock' or 'funk'. This album, recorded live the same day as its twinner Pangaea, illustrate that this band was a force to be reckoned with.
