Black Swan- Thom Yorke

In regards to my "new" Radiohead, I'm enjoying Kid C a lot more than In Rainbows.

You just need to spend more time with each of them. The Eraser is a damn good album, but without the rest of the band it lacks something. I hear a lot of those songs and as fun as Thom's electronic experiments are, I can also hear them as embryonic Radiohead songs and I often wonder what they'd sound like if he let Jonny have at it. "Harrodown Hill" especially sounds like it wants to be a RH song, though it never would be as the subject matter was very time specific (the suicide of Dr. David Kay). Some of the other songs though may migrate over to the bad someday, or so I hope. Not to knock "Kid C" but it lacks a bit of what Kid A and Amnesiac offer with the full 5 (though Jonny, Colin and Ed do contribute minimally to The Eraser).

IR, on the other hand, was built around one of the best batches of songs they've written in years. Almost all of those songs had been road-tested and worked out for a couple of years prior to hitting the studio (many many years in the case of "Nude"). Jonny's six-month crash course in dub reggae (in order to make the compilation Jonny Greenwood is the Controller for Trojan Records) had a lot of interesting results informing his playing and especially Ed's playing. The end results were a spectacular album which really show off a very mature and evolved Radiohead. My one and only complaint about IR was that "Spooks" didn't make the album or the bonus disc. Of all the songs of that batch, it was one I was really hoping to hear a studio version. At least I still have several shows where it was played. Get to know IR a little better and you will come to realize how good an album it really is and how promising it is for the future of that band, who are allegedly writing a new batch of songs (hooray!)

I should have a chance to play electric with some friends this weekend for the first time in months which explains the last two selections I've played and probably much of what's to come in the next few days. I'm also re-reading Heylin's Babylon's Burning so I'm in a very punk place right now.

Thank you for the analysis, but remember it takes me forever to really form opinions on new albums. I was just making an initial impressionistic comment. It will take awhile for the subtleties that you gravitate toward in IR to resonate for me personally.

I hope I didn't give you the impression that I was writing off IR, because that isn't case. So far the only album of theirs I'm not crazy about is Pablo Honey. I'm still missing Amnesiac, but I've got a ways to go with Eraser and IR before giving that a shot.

Thank you again, though, for taking the time post on IR. I do appreciate it my friend. :)

So far, I think I like Kid C more than Kid A, but that opinion could change. There's songs I love on Kid A, but some I can do without. I can't say thats the case with Eraser.

No worries, I get you well enough by now. :)

It actually interests me to see how your feelings on new things evolve over time. Remember with Pablo Honey that they were a very young and very different type of band relying much much more on the three guitar attack. Thom had yet to migrate to the piano and Jonny had yet to migrate to the 8 billion instruments and electronics he plays now. It was much more straight-ahead rock, but what was apparent even back then was Thom's potential as a songwriter. These were not your typical heavy-pop songs. The album sounds nothing like what they sound like now, but when they play songs from that album (and other stuff from that era) live, it's amazing how much fun they still seem to have going back to their roots. When they want to rock, they can rock like nobody's business. There's more than a little punk to that aesthetic when they turn it on.

Oh, and get Amnesiac!!! It's Kid A's twinner. It's almost like the second half of the same album. It's also the missing link that puts Hail to the Thief in proper perspective as the hybrid of their Bends/OK Computer sound and their Kid A/Amnesiac sound. Plus it has the studio version of "Pyramid Song" which is among their greatest studio creations, a true work of art.

But I know in time you will hear it all. I'm just impatient. :panic:

Yikes! It makes me sad that for a band of their stature nobody has to date written a decent book on them. H&U is the best of what's out there, but that's as complimentary as I can get about it other than to say they named it from a line from one of my fav songs.

Must Clinton Heylin write the book on every good artist? :arg:

I've found the best way to get the RH story is to read the entirety of available interviews. They do a good job of speaking for themselves.

I really enjoyed the chapter on Ok Computer. It helped understand the significance of Kid A and the immensity of the pressure they were under. My respect really grew for the band due to their artistic integrity. Most bands that achieve that kind of fame don't stand up to the plate and say "Fuck it."

I also liked the bio material on all of them, but of course nobody got coverage like Thom. It was an okay book for what it was.

I wish someone would write a good biography on Elliott Smith.

That would be a dream come true. The major obstacle is that Elliott's inner circle, his family, friends etc... have been pretty closed off to interviews because of the circumstances of his death. I think that will change over time, but when someone commits suicide, there seems to be more pressure to get the "legacy" aspect of it right.

Nice.
There's a great example of one of his songs I don't want to hear anyone else sing. Garcia did it a bunch with the Jerry Garcia Band, and much as I loved Jerry, it never quite sounded as right as it did coming from Dylan the man who actually experienced the things the character in the song does. Blood on the Tracks is such a deeply personal album of Bob's that the songs when covered, as many of them have been, seem hollow by comparison to the real thing. This was a deeply unhappy man lashing out at the world and at himself.

Agreed on both counts. Several people I know have said they'd have loved to have been Sarah Lowndes Dylan and had some of the romantic songs written about them, to which I always ask "and how would you have felt when he got to 'Idiot Wind'?"

:lol: yeah actually I don't think he wrote many positive songs for her at all, theres the desperate "Sara" where he basically yowls for here like a cat in heat, come to think of it most of dylans love songs have a bit of a mean streak
Except for Thunder on the Mountain from Modern Times where he professes his lust for alicia keys, but that was kinda creepy more than anything...

Hated it. There are not a lot of bands that can pull off the energy of Fever to Tell and not sound wholly derivative but the YYY's did it. Then they follow it up with an album that sounds like a billion other bands. I'm definitely not about to compare it to Zeppelin. In fact, the riff-based songs of Fever to Tell are a lot more like Page than anything on Show Your Bones.

It never did grow on me. My wife and I loved Fever, but only she liked Bones and even that was just because it was new. Now the novelty wore off and when she wants to listen to the YYY's it's back to Fever or a live show I got for her with the Fever batch of songs. I'll definitely give them another shot if and when they ever make another album, but I'm hoping it's closer to punk than power pop.

I (re)learned this today on the guitar. Still just simple chords, but I'm working on switching those chords faster.
I'm still buzzing a lot when I play, but that's why I'm working on songs with like 5 chords that repeat - I'm trying to train my left hand.

Also, my fingers finally went numb tonight so it wasn't as painful.

The next time I send you some music, I will try to remember to include some Lizards. Whatever you may call it, I think you might like it.

It's still well within my definition of punk which has much more to do with approach then it does with a specific style of music. Of course I have made and continue to make the argument that American punk rock has its roots just as deep in the "Free Jazz" (aka "New Music") scene of the 1960's as it does the proto-punk of the garage bands and The Stooges/Velves/MC5/NY Dolls stuff which is always given credit as being the starting point. It's always been very clear to me that the MC5 and the Stooges took plenty of inspiration from Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler and not just speeding up three chord rock and roll. The Minutemen were clearly fans of Capt. Beefheart which was so clearly in line with free jazz. Black Flag's Greg Ginn's solos are more Coltrane and Ayler than anything resembling other guitar players.

Always a good choice SJ.

It's also in line with what I was saying to Brice earlier. In terms of flaunting tradition for something new, there was more than a little bit of punk in Miles as well. The Kind of Blue album flew in the face of the hard bop scene of which Miles was a part. No longer were the bands just alternating solos over steady chord changes. That album took things modal and Miles and Trane changed the face of jazz. There were more than a few traditionalists who reacted to that album exactly the way classic rockers and classic rock critics reacted to punk. Of course Miles did it a again in the late 60's when he took the second acoustic quintet electric. That move really pissed people off, but resulted in some of his most endearing work for me.

Open All Night - Bruce Springsteen ( from Nebraska ).

Jayson, this is the song I was thinking Springsteen should have done from Nebraska last night. It rocks!

There are several he could have done which would have worked a lot better than that anthem to cheesiness he chose. I'd think that by this point in his career he should realize that Born in the USA was a very sub-par album and that he doesn't "need" to play any songs from it to appease anyone. I'd prefer to forget it even existed. Something from "The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle" would have worked nicely instead.

Velvet Goldmine Soundtrack - Now planning.

The Wild The Innocent and the E-Street Shuffle.... I have a friend who used to call that Springsteen's "Rhyming Dictionary Album"!

I agree that someone needs to like Bruce know that Born In The USA was not his best effort, even if it probably outsold everything else.

Greetings From Asbury Park NJ certainly hit the rhyming dictionary hard as well. Bruce himself said that "Blinded By the Light" was was written with "the rhyming dictionary on fire." Of course that album also has "Spirit in the Night" which was the highlight of any show in which it was ever played.

While Nebraska may be my favorite, those first two (Greetings and The Wild, The Innocent, etc) are definitely his best. Born in the USA is a solid contender for worst. Popularity and record sales do not equate to a solid album. The sad thing for me is that I don't think anyone needs to tell him that. I'm sure he knows. That's why it was that much more surprising to hear him pick a song from that album, and probably the worst song from that album aside from the trite title track.

My favorite Springstein album is Nebraska

his performance at the halftime show was a bit mediocre...
perhaps they should have some younger bands play it, gnarls barkley or my chemical romance hell even fall out boy would be cool, not that I dont like the boss but younger bands would be good...

Mediocre is being generous. Knowing what that band can do when they are on, that was several notches below mediocre. A well-rehearsed E Street Band can still bring it, but they phoned it in last night. I don't think it's that he was too old either, it's just that they clearly didn't rehearse. Prince is not exactly young either but he brought the house down in Miami two years ago.

Reminds me of a conversation you and I had the other day about ignorant music fans who have no idea about the roots of their own musical tastes. It's not like the song was on the soundtrack to the film that helped popularize reggae worldwide or anything. Dumbasses.

So, in honor of those f'n morons...

I will even grant that that specific song is not quite reggae, but I remain perplexed that any fans of the genre could not know who Jimmy Cliff is. I shudder to think what would happen if you played the Skatalites for them. I suspect you'd get the same reaction I've gotten from people who claim they like "ska" and then have no idea who the Skatalites are. They know every last American imitator but they have no clue who the originators are.

So, in their honor...

Nice! I haven't heard them in years myself.

I suspect with the possible exception of Marley they only know the newer dancehall music. They also didn't know who Peter Tosh was.

So then they don't really know Marley all that well do they? For Jah's sake, there were only three Wailers (to start with) and Peter was one of them. How can they not know who he was? It's really laughable sometimes how people have no clue about what they're listening to.

Oh, I know. I told them Peter was a Wailer and they're just staring at me blankly. It is one thing to not know music you don't listen to, but....
