This is Wayne and Zony Mash in an acoustic format. A band that makes such great use of B-3 organ and electric guitar and bass makes the transition to acoustic quite smoothly. Wayne in particular makes as interesting a piano player as he does organist (and he's my favorite organist ever). His sense of melody comes through no matter what instrument he's using to convey it.

I so disagree on that one. They can ape the style of the earlier stuff for sure, but they sure as hell don't write lyrics like Thom and the guitar player will never be Jonny. He can use the KAOSS pad all he wants, he'll never be Jonny. When any of them can incorporate the Ondes Martenot into their music, I'll revisit that statement.

This is not say they're bad, although I can't personally stand them, but superior to RH, not by any standard by which I measure the two. But we all have different tastes.

So I'm guessing it's not in response to the "he's not a better lyricist than Thom" part of my argument because those are nothing that stand out to me. The guitar playing is ok, though most of the song seems to be 4 or 5 notes repeated over and over, but even the parts that are a bit more complex, none of it makes me think the guy is in the same league as Jonny Greenwood (or that they even play the same sport). Like I said, they're not bad, but they're not Radiohead.

Incidentally, my wife likes Muse so I asked her if she thought they were better than Radiohead. She's still laughing.

ETA: I've watched that video twice now and I would be remiss not to add that I think the drummer is pretty sloppy. He is certainly no Phil Selway who is one of the most overlooked and underrated drummers in rock and roll. Should I go back and analyze the bass player now or can we take as a given that he ain't Colin?

actually mathew bellamy is both the vocalist and the guitarist, they make an aweful lot of racket for a trio, my opinion is that they have taken the kind of sound that radiohead has by this point abandoned and beefed it up and made it more intense, to use a hair metal analogy muse is to radiohead what skid row is to motley crew, dont know if that makes any sense to anyone but me...

I think it's hard to really compare them since one is a trio and the other a five piece with three guitarists. Even taking Jonny out the equation, a lot of people overlook what Ed O'Brien contributes to the band. He adds so much in terms of tone and texture that I just don't hear anyplace else. As far as RH abandoning their old sound, I see that as testimony to their greatness. They continue to experiment and evolve. However, if you want to hear what they can do with their old sound, simply find a contemporary live performance of an older song. They've certainly upped the intensity level.

I can't really speak to the Crue/Skid Row analogy because both bands are highly derivative and without any redeeming value to me. If you are trying to say that Muse is derivative of RH, than I certainly agree but I'm not being at all complimentary when I say that. It makes me think of what Thom Yorke himself had to say about bands like these that are aping the old RH sound "good luck when you get to Kid A". The ability to play those songs live is what makes Radiohead Radiohead.

Indeed as far as the progression of the acoustic play. I'm also thinking in terms of the reverb and other filters on the studio version has a general Beatle-y sound to it present on much of Rubber Soul and Revolver. Live the song is sweet too, as it as just Thom & Jonny with two acoustic guitars.

I'm listening to it again, and I can hear it more in the effects now as you mentioned. I'm sure your ear is better about picking up those subtleties, as I tend to hone in on the acoustic. Even the violin sounds similar to Eleanor Rigby if I'm not mistaken.

Definitely one of the better songs, though I love them all except "Videotape". However, "Bodysnatchers" is plenty loud and it is a great song (fun to play too). Ditto "Bangers & Mash" which was on the bonus disc and of the same batch of songs. I like the more subdued sound as well, but when they rock, they can rock.

You're not mistaken. It's funny because I've read interviews with Jonny about how he likes to use strings but doesn't want them to sound like "Eleanor Rigby" because he feels it's been done. I guess he changed his mind on that track, but it works quite well.

That actually sheds a lot of light on some of your take on them. You went straight from the earliest album to the latest. The progression in between puts a lot of the changes in perspective, and the live stuff (of which I have an ever growing collection) fills in the blanks. It's a constant evolution.

It's also quite interesting to hear some of the stuff all stripped down to just Thom and an acoustic guitar or a piano as it is on the solo show I am listening to now. How's that for bringing it back to Now Playing?

( Jayson, you said you knew all these guys in their individual carnations, outside the soundtrack... some suggestions please? )

Carnations? My all-too-visual mind made a picture of Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood as flowers.

I do know several of the artists outside of their work on the soundtrack, but not all. It's particularly the guys in Venus in Furs that I know well. Thom and Jonny are in Radiohead. Andy Mackay is in Roxy Music (the band whose songs they are mostly doing). David Gray is a solo artist (check out his "White Ladder" album for a good intro to him). If you like their songs on the soundtrack, start with the eponymous first Roxy Music album.

The other made up band is Wylde Ratttz which is comprised of members of The Stooges (the recently departed Ron Asheton), Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley), Minutemen (the great Mike Watt) and Mudhoney (Mark Arm). If you want more music like theirs, the first three Stooges' albums (The Stooges, Fun House, and Raw Power) are all classics and exceptionally influential on about a billion punk bands that came after them.

Shudder to Think I am unaware of outside of the soundtrack.

They're a pair of solo performances by Thom Yorke from the October 2002 Bridge School benefit concerts. It's just Thom playing either acoustic guitar or piano (Neil Young's piano!). He closes the second day's performance with a beautiful version of Neil's "After the Goldrush" which he'd been playing a verse of with RH for awhile as an intro to "Everything In It's Right Place" but this is the full song and sounds that much sweeter that it's played on Neil's piano. Neil and Mrs. Young are the organizers of the annual benefit shows.

I also have a couple of other shows that are Thom and Jonny playing very stripped down versions of RH songs. Thom plays acoustic and Jonny plays his Telecaster but straight into the amp with no effects. It's definitely a different sound. These shows have been great for learning how to play a lot of their songs.

They're definitely among those doing interesting things outside of the traditional with strings (along with Zorn's cadre of Masada songbook musicians like the Masada String Trio). Excellent! I really like the second one. I think I've heard the first song, but I'm not sure if it was Waits who did when I heard it. Has anyone covered it that you know of?

There have been a couple of covers, one by the band Grievous Angels and one by Claudia Bettinaglio. There may have been more, but the Waits' cover project web site hasn't posted any.

Anyhow, I love that you too know who Kronos Quartet is and I think I may have a new found appreciation for Waits.

Hooray!

PS. You know I love referring to the Syd era band as THE Pink Floyd.

Well, that was their name. ;) Then Syd left and they became another band who did some allright THE Pink Floyd covers.

Yes, I may have to check out some more Waits. At first I didn't really know what to make of his voice. It's definitely unique, but I REALLY liked that second song alot and then I went back and listened to the first and liked it too. I've hear maybe a couple songs before by him but didn't really get it.

Waits' Music is addictive, he's one of my all time faves

I actually prefer floyd under the direction of waters, animals especially

The voice is definitely an acquired taste. For a good deal of his songs, the characters and the stories within would seem much less authentic if they were being sung by someone with a more traditional singing voice. After you listen to him for awhile, you start to gain an appreciation for all the things his voice can do and it becomes apparent that he is the best singer for his songs. There have been some good covers (and some awful ones) but even the good ones lose something in the translation.

As for The Floyd, I have nothing at all against the Waters' led band, they did many many great albums, but it's a different band and different sound than the Syd band. The Gilmour led band was a waste of time. To me it breaks down like this...

The Pink Floyd - Syd Barrett, leader
Pink Floyd - Roger Waters, leader
Grey Floyd - David Gilmour, leader

Well, Waters was actually a member of the band...unlike Gilmour. :ninja:

Well, the stuff with Kronos definitely won me over. I'll have to listen to more. I still don't think you can convince me that Dylan should sing his own songs though. :nope:

Perhaps once you become hooked on Waits you will see Dylan in a new light. You know I have a thing for the authenticity of song writers singing their own songs.

all it takes to get hooked is that one dylan song that u can identify with and then the rest will follow and suit and burn themselves into ur soul, in my case its ballad of a thin man, hadnt liked him before I heard that at the age of 15 but hearing it was like a key turning in a lock and opening a door

Oh, I love Dylan. I think he's a brilliant songwriter. who should NEVER sing.

flaggwalkstheline's particular song choice there is a lot like what I was saying about Waits. It's a brilliant song, but it would sound inauthentic coming from anyone other than Dylan.
